By signing up to the Triangle of Care membership scheme, mental health trusts must undertake rigorous self-assessments and develop action plans to demonstrate how they are involving and supporting carers as well as promoting the important role they have and further improving services for carers. The second gold star, which was achieved in a year rather than the required two years, recognises GMW’s work towards the Triangle of Care standards, commitment to ensuring carers are fully included and supported by services both now and in the future and is further accreditation of the Trust’s carerfocussed services.

A new Care Act

T

G

The Triangle of Care, developed in partnership with the Carers Trust as well as people with mental health problems and their carers, aims to improve communication between those caring for people with a mental health problem and mental health professionals.

We receive a second gold star for our commitment to carers

MW has become one of only four mental health trusts in the country to receive a second gold star for our commitment to the national Triangle of Care initiative.

the

L-R: Rachel Thompson from the Royal College of Nursing, Jackie Marsh and Janice McGrory from Salford Royal NHS Trust, Tracy Collard and Gill Drummond from GMW with MP Hazel Blears (front row centre) at the Parliamentary reception for the Traingle of Care (dementia).

he Care Act 2014 came into force on 1st April 2015. It replaces all previous acts. The Care Act strengthens the rights and recognition of carers. It should improve access to support, enabling better planning and prevention of crises.

We have already led the way in our commitment to working with carers by becoming a national NHS demonstrator pilot site for carers where best practice from Bolton was shared locally and nationally to shape the support and information carers receive.

The Care Act introduces new responsibilities of local authorities towards all individuals. For the first time, carers will be recognised in the law in the same way as those they care for, so more carers will be assessed to establish their needs.

A carers charter and strategy has also been developed by the Trust to set out what carers can expect from the Trust’s staff and services. We have also employed dedicated Carer Support Workers to support carers both practically and emotionally and run carer awareness training for staff.

The new Act covers the impact caring has on the carer’s life: such as living arrangements, work life, education and social life. The local authority and the carer will agree a support plan which sets out how the carer’s needs will be met, for example: buying a laptop to keep in touch with family and friends, gym membership or education opportunities.

If you would like to know more about this project or if you feel your experiences as a carer could help us with this piece of work, please contact: Tracy Collard, Carer Lead, on 0161 703 1362 or email: tracy.collard@gmw.nhs.uk.

Carers Week 2015

C

arers Week is a wonderful opportunity to recognise, support and celebrate carers throughout the UK. Carers Week (8-14 June 2015) is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

This year the focus is on building Carer Friendly Communities. Communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own. The campaign will be asking: what do carers need from parts of the community to improve their lives? Carers Week is brought to life by the individuals and organisations who come

A day in the life of our Carer Champions

Carers Champions work specifically to support carers in their role. They aim to improve the carer’s quality of life and help them to continue in their caring role. They can also help ensure that the carers voice is heard when the person they care for is having their needs assessed or met. Carer Champions will also help improve local services by feeding back what they learn from supporting carers. Health and Wellbeing for Carers course Caring for a relative, partner, friend or neighbour can be hugely rewarding but it can also be stressful and confusing. Our free “Health and Wellbeing for Carers” course will provide you with practical tips on taking care of your own health and wellbeing when you’re looking after someone. There’s also advice on how to maintain relationships and handy information on where to go for help for yourself as a carer. The course sessions are from 10am2.30pm in venues across Greater Manchester on the following dates: 24 June and 30 July 2015. See the Recovery Academy prospectus for more information about the course: www.gmw.nhs.uk/recovery.

Carer Awareness Training We have launched an e-learning Carer Awareness course designed to support all staff – from front line practitioners in health and social care to admin and support staff as all our staff come into contact with carers. The course aims to clarify how carers can be identified and describes some of the real life experiences of carers, raising awareness of what being a carer often entails. It will help staff understand the impact caring for others can have and enable them to deliver more targeted support to carers. The training is mandatory for all our staff and they will be required to update this learning every three years. For more information about the training, please contact Gill Drummond, Dementia Quality and Carer Quality Lead, on 0161 772 3843 or by emailing: gillian.drummond@gmw.nhs.uk.

Youth mental health NHS England has welcomed plans for a radical shake up of youth mental health care. Following an in-depth look at mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the Government has set out a blue-print for improving care over the next five years.
