CEO Message The successes of Girl Scouts of Utah in 2012 cannot be summed up in a few paragraphs. Simply put, the organization saw phenomenal advancements by any indicator. Of course, the highlight was our year-long centennial celebration which took us from our first-ever Founder’s Day breakfast in Ogden—to Capitol Hill for a rousing day-long festival, which included thousands of girls, volunteers, Board members, and even Governor Herbert. In October we held a once-in-a-lifetime Centennial Gala with keynote speaker Leigh Anne Tuohy who shared her inspirational story. Our girls recognized the 100th anniversary with the “Project 100” program; which focused on the number 100 in any form of service: from collecting 100 coats for The Road Home Shelter to donating 100 pounds of animal food to the St. George animal shelter. Celebrating through service was a year-long theme. Perhaps the biggest surprise accomplishment was finding out Utah girls sold more cookies per girl than any other Council in the U.S. Our Council’s biggest seller, Maya Moody, sold more than 5,000 boxes! Overall, it was Girl Scouts of Utah’s most successful year yet for selling Girl Scout Cookies. As always, all cookie profits stay right here in Utah to support the Girl Scout mission. Big changes took place in our administration. We created Membership, Volunteer, and Program departments to serve our members more efficiently. We are already seeing improved numbers in all three areas as they work to serve the needs of our most valuable assets. We also combined the Communications and Development departments in order to present a more cohesive message to our outside audience. We hope you’ve noticed, and even experienced these exciting changes. Finally, the auditing firm, Lake, Hill & Myer issued an unqualified opinion on our financial statement and gave GSU a clean audit letter. The organization has

good governance and is run responsibly. I’m also happy to report that 100 percent of our board and staff donate financially to GSU.

Girl Scouts continues to help ordinary Utah girls do extraordinary things. The year’s growth and retention shows how relevant and important Girl Scouting is to the lives of girls and their families. Girl Scouts of Utah continues to see growth year-over-year in membership – both in girls and adult members. Total membership was 11,845, with 8,478 girl members and 3,367 adult volunteers. Both numbers show steady increases. With a successful campaign to recruit new Girl Scouts, the Council had 3,904 new members join in 2012.

The Utah State Capitol hosted more than 2,500 Girl Scouts, volunteers and dignitaries during the official centennial celebration of the Girl Scouts. Governor Gary Herbert said, “Girl
Scouts is a great and valuable program that makes Utah a better place. We have a better quality of life because we have Girl Scouts.�

Program In the 2011-2012 membership year, we offered 144 council-sponsored programs serving 1,509 adults, 4,168 girls and 1,357 family members!
Scholarships and Awards Girl Scouts across the state have made a lasting impact with countless hours in making this world a better place. They have earned many awards and scholarships which help contribute to this cause. The organization is particularly proud of the 15 girls who received their Gold Award, Girl Scouts’ highest award. To receive this award, girls must do meaningful and sustainable service in their community; in other words, the project will continue to help many people even after the girl is finished with her project.
The Girl Scout Gold Award, comparable to Boy Scouts Eagle Award, is Girl Scouts’ highest award.

Outreach Last year GSU served 1,294 girls through our Outreach Program through
55 community partners, schools and free lunch sites. The Girl Scouts’ Outreach Program extends the myriad of benefits of Girl Scouting to underserved girls in elementary, middle, and high school. Collaboration with community partners helps us identify these underserved girls in migrant families, after-school, juvenile justice programs, Title I schools, and low income communities that would benefit from the Girl Scout experience. The organization reaches out to these girls with a special program designed not only to improve and enhance their lives, but also to better the communities where they live.

Outdoor Program Camporee Trefoil Ranch hosted more than 1000 girls and volunteers over one weekend in June for Camporee, the triennieal event that coincidentally landed on the Girl Scouts’ Centennial. Tents filled the meadows and girls hiked, competed in a Dutch oven cooking contest, and concluded their evenings with campfire skits. Other events included a heritage fashion show, with Girl Scout uniforms through the decades, and even a live band. Camporee was a signature event during the 100th Anniversary and created lifelong friendships and memories.

Overview of Resident Camp 2012

Trefoil Ranch offered six weeks of resident camp filling 634 spots. The Ranch also offered one session of Troop Camping serving 106 Girl Scouts. Campers had the opportunity to experience the ropes courses, horseback riding, archery, biking, and rafting down the Provo River in addition to general camp activities.

Camp Cloud Rim offered six weeks of resident camp filling 607 spots. Camp Cloud Rim also offered two sessions of Troop Camping serving 260 Girl Scouts. While at Camp Cloud Rim, campers had the opportunity to experience the waterfront, art studio, hikes to Mt. Majestic, and overnight campouts in addition to general camp activities. Camp Cloud Rim also provided two leadership programs, LEAP (Leadership Enrichment Activity Program) and C.I.T. (Counselor-in-Training), which focused on communication, decisionmaking, problem-solving, and working with younger girls.

Overall Girl Scouts of Utah’s two summer camp programs served
1,607 people with 1,241 girls participating in resident camp programs and 366 Girl Scouts participating in troop camp programs. These camp programs were run by 70+ dedicated camp staff, many of whom were involved with the Girl Scout program as children.

Other Outdoor Program Highlights

Trefoil Ranch is Girl Scouts of Utah’s year-round program center. During the non-resident camp season the facility is used for troop camping, minicamps, Never-the-Same-Weekends, Leadership Summit, Annual Meeting, and outside rental groups. This past year Trefoil Ranch hosted 16 Never-the-Same-Weekends serving 807 girls and 528 adults (1335 total). Many of the Never-the-Same-Weekend programs included staff-run activities focused on science, outdoor adventure, and nature.

Outdoor programs also provided opportunities for girls and adults to experience the outdoors throughout the year by holding fourteen minicamp and day programs serving 632 Girl Scouts and family members. Girls and adults enjoyed weekends of hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, cooking, sewing, doing art projects, and spending time around the campfire with songs, skits, and s’mores.

DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS Form follows function was the impetus for combining the Development and Communications Departments into a seamless team in 2012. The synergy in the two groups has paid dividends to focus messaging, develop new partnerships, and serve both internal and external audiences more efficiently.
