Follow us on Twitter: GrapevineLIVE Stephen Foster is BBC Radio Suffolk’s longest serving presenter. Foz presents Drive-time and features an eclectic selection of music with much of it coming from local bands and singer-songwriters. @StephenFoz

This month Foz focuses on a handful of concerts coming up at two of his favourite venues – The Apex in Bury St Edmunds and the Colchester Arts Centre. The Apex and Colchester Arts Centre haven’t got much in common in the looks department but they do share a vision to serve up an eclectic mix of music. The former has made Bury St Edmunds a destination for concert goers while the latter has become something of a blueprint for breathing new life into a church building. I’d advise looking very carefully at the latest Apex brochure to ensure you don’t miss out on a show that you might not spot at first glance. This month, for example, you can wallow in 70’s nostalgia with 10cc, Slade and Mud II, re-live the 80’s courtesy of Midge Ure and Heaven 17 with the British Electric Foundation or go back to the Ally McBeal years with Vonda Shepard. There’s also the wonderful world music of Christian Garrick’s Budapest Café Orchestra and Afro Celt Sound System. November sees a return by blues-rock star Joanne Shaw Taylor with special guest Aaron Keylock, an unplugged trio show by Suffolk-based Steve Harley and a triple treat for folk fans – Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band followed by Billy Bragg and Joe Henry and then Jon Boden.

November 15 will include all the songs on the resulting album Shine A Light plus a

Billy Bragg and Joe Henry selection of Bragg favourites. There’s no doubt The Apex has benefitted greatly from its link up with the Milkmaid Folk Club. The same can also be said for the Colchester Arts Centre and the town’s folk club who have been working as one for longer than I can remember.

...you can wallow in 70’s nostalgia

Billy Bragg and Joe Henry guested on my radio show recently to talk about their field recordings made during a four day train journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. I dare say their visit to Bury on Tuesday,

My first visits to the Church Street venue were to see blues greats like Jimmy Witherspoon, Carey Bell and Lowell Fulson as well as Colchester’s very own Howlin’ Wilf (now James Hunter). I then discovered the delights of the folk club when Clive Gregson and Christine Collister were on the circuit.

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE This month’s folk attractions include the delightful duo from Huddersfield – O’Hooley and Tidow – who graced the main stage at the recent FolkEast festival near Woodbridge. Belinda and Heidi have just issued an outstanding album entitled Shadows which I’m sure will be picking up gongs when the awards season returns next Spring. A few days after their appearance another Heidi – Talbot – has a Saturday night gig followed later in the month by the highlyrated indie-folk experience that is Keston Cobblers Club. On my birthday, October 31st in case you’re interested, the trio Faustus will be in town as part of a tour to promote their new album Death And Other Animals. Away from the folk scene, the Colchester Arts Centre will be hosting a solo gig by Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze and a rare performance in our neck of the woods by Pete Wylie and The Mighty Wah! I haven’t got the space to go into greater detail of both venues’ autumn and winter programmes so I’d urge you strongly to check out the websites, ensuring you give them both a thorough look. I wouldn’t want you to kick yourself having discovered a little gem too late in the day to buy a ticket.

It’s been an honour to host four gigs at the John Peel Centre this year, and we continue to pinch ourselves this month as we take up an invitation to co-host an event with Aldeburgh Music. The venue is known around the world for being at the forefront of the classical music scene, so goodness knows what they were thinking when they asked us to get involved. As part of the Suffolk Songfest night on 15 October, Aldeburgh Music has selected two artists who have developed their talents at Snape, and we’ve picked another two who we thought would showcase the diversity of what we play on the radio show, and who we were excited about seeing on such a grand stage.

the past couple of years, and it will be great to hear them in such an atmospheric hall. Dead Rat Orchestra, meanwhile, are responsible for one of my favourite ever sessions - when they entered the live room armed with just a log and some axes. Another highlight from our time on the show was when Nathaniel from the band popped into the studio and performed an impromptu acappella version of their song on the Antigen Christmas album. It was a truly mesmerising experience.

It was a truly mesmerising experience.

So, step up Amethysts, who have continued to impress us with their leftfield indie pop. As the press release says, Simon and Clarice’s music has “vocal harmonies floating on a sea of synths, drums and guitar lines”. It’s a fair description. It’s been a joy to watch them develop over

Who knows what they’ll do at Snape, but it’s guaranteed to be worth watching. So there you go... Amethysts and Dead Rat Orchestra. A great line up as it is, but the night will also feature Aldeburgh Music’s picks - Anna Meredith and Ayanna Witter-Johnson. I’m really looking forward to seeing both of them, and have enjoyed Anna Meredith’s LP, Varmints, which was named Scottish album of the year in the summer. Anna straddles classical,

pop, electronica and even rock on her recorded music, so it will be interesting to see how she converts this to the stage. Ayanna Witter-Johnson, meanwhile, is a MOBO-nominated cellist and singer/ songwriter who wrote and produced her third EP on the Suffolk coast. She’s played with artists including 4hero and Laura Mvula, and earlier in the day at Aldeburgh you can attend a songwriting workshop with her to pick up some tips. Tickets are available from the Aldeburgh Music website, and we’ll be recording the night to broadcast highlights on a later show. Richard

Ro g e r M o r f e y i s a m u s i c i a n a n d p r o m o t e r i n Suffolk and Norfolk. Jazz Spot, is a forum for events, news and discussion and can be reached at jazzspotinfo@gmail.com Trombone has been a figure of fun down the ages, with its big loopy image and droopy clownish sound. Donald Duck had Trombone Trouble in 1944, Music Hall comic Jimmy Edwards spoofed in 1966 before the Jack Parnell Orchestra, and of course there was Douglas in a certain Danish butter advert. But listen again, as the trombone has an unsurpassed grace and elegance in jazz. Tommy Dorsey’s plaintive and muted control on ‘Song of India’, Curtis Fuller’s drive on Art Blakey’s ‘Caravan’, or Robin Eubanks’ defining presence in the Dave Holland Quintet, to give a few examples. One of the finest British jazz trombonists of his generation is Mark Nightingale, who returns in October with the Andy Panayi

Quartet at Dereham Jazz. This monthly Norfolk session is now firmly re-ensconced at the town’s golf club. Mark Nightingale came through the youth jazz orchestra route in the early 1980s, starting with Midland YJO and progressing to the national NYJO (who you can see in their present line-up at Saffron Hall this month). Nightingale has since contributed to the BBC Big Band, and maintained his own eponymous large ensemble, while also leading a funk-oriented Quintet (Out of the Box LP) that both features the mercurial alto saxophonist Nigel Hitchcock and pays a nod to Eubanks’ M-Base origins. As it happens, Mark Nightingale was hosted last month at the occasional music and dinner invitations at Tithe Barn in Needham, near Harleston (see the Music 2016 page at gilllevin.wordpress.com). Trombonists are however becoming a rare breed; and the trombone is not an instrument you can just pick up later in life for a bit of busking. Compared with playing the saxophone (or trumpet, for that matter) school pupils are half as likely to be taking up the trombone – according to a national survey in 2005 (going back a bit I know) – in spite of most local school services offering lessons in the instrument. There is also a gender issue here: as with guitar and drums in the jazz line-up, trombone has a presumed blokeishness.

Mark Nightingale

Thankfully therefore we also have in Annie Whitehead an inspiration not just across British jazz and large-ensemble projects

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE but also through her earlier pop, folk and African ‘new wave’ musical connections. A Lancastrian, Whitehead also came through an YJO (Manchester’s) but brought to her sound past experience in brass bands and a 1940s-style institution by the name of the Ivy Benson All Girl Orchestra.

...trombonists are however becoming a rare breed .

Among the current generation of modern jazz trombone leaders is Cambridgeborn Tom Green, who studied under Mark Nightingale. He’ll be back for the Cambridge Jazz Festival in November but let’s hope he and other exponents of the less-favoured ‘bone will be showcased at some of our venues soon.

ALDEN PATTERSON AND DASHWOOD – CALL ME HOME Norfolk folk trio Alden, Patterson and Dashwood weave rich vocal harmonies, fiddle, dobro, guitar and mandolin around beautifully written original songs and melodies. They comprise some of Norwich’s finest musicians from The Woodland Creatures, Murphy’s Lore and Dumbfoundus. This is their debut album and was recorded at Home Farm Barns, St Cross South Elmham. It was produced by Alex Patterson and mastered by Stu Hann. They embark on a series of dates this month kicking off at The Plasterers in Norwich (9/10) followed four days later with another show in the Norfolk capital, this time at The Octagon Chapel. They return to home turf on October 27 with a date at the Crown in Burston near Diss. Track : Call Me Home/Sweet And Low/The Riddle Song + Bina’s Jig/ By The Sea/Water Song/Ferryman’s Court/The Moon Song/The Old Priory/Mole In the Ground Line-up : Christina Alden, Alex Patterson and Noel Dashwood

HANNAH SANDERS & BEN SAVAGE – BEFORE THE SUN Fleetingly, Cambridgeshire-based Hannah and Ben may evoke a memories of Shirley Collins & Davy Graham, (from the 60’s), Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris (70’s) , or Gillian Welch & David Rawlings (the 90’s). Hannah & Ben’s warm distilling of influences from both sides of the big pond produces a refined sound that is decidedly their own. Working in Toronto with award-winning producer David Travers-Smith, the charismatic English folk singer Hannah, follows up her “charms” with an exquisite album of duets. There is an almost musical soul-mate quality to the support Ben’s singing and playing adds to Sanders’ own vocals, guitar, autoharp and dulcimer work. Travers-Smith frames their special musical rapport within a recording that deftly finds the right balance between intimacy and sound hi-fidelity. Track : The Fall(Hang)/Come All Ye Fair And Tender Maids/Sun Is Gonna Rise/What’s It Tonight My Love?/Lady Margaret/Clayton Boone/Deep Blue Sea/Ribbons And Bows/Unquiet Grave/Boots Of Spanish Leather Musicians : Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage with Kevin Breit, Evan Carson, Jim Causley, Robin Gillan, Katrina Gilmore, Jade Rhiannon and Jon Thorne.

CAFÉ MUSICA – LEARNING TO BREATHE There comes a stage when musicians feel comfortable enough in their ability and experience to stop seeking competitive advantage. It was over one of the Mersea Art Café›s delicious cappuccinos that James Weaver and After The Fire’s Peter Banks discovered their mutual pasts, were both similar and so very nearly collided. Now teamed up, the combination of their two voices provide a rich emotion, drawing out the best in both the quirky covers and original songs they perform. With an essentially acoustic multi-instrument approach, Café Musica are captivating audiences and listeners alike. Café Musica›s take on music is classic, yet fresh and they appeal to such a broad spectrum. They definitely have the cool factor, along with a respect for music which makes them popular across multiple genres and audience ages. With the backing of Brandon-based GingerDog Records, they have now releasing their first official album. Track : Railroad Man/I’ll Fly Away/Blackberry Blossom/Time To Think/ Did Trouble Me/Learning To Breathe/Shine A Little Light/Harvest Home/ Black Swan Song/You/Be My Guest/Half Light/Put The Message In The Box/Better Be Home Soon/Galway Girl/I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) Musicians : James Weaver and Peter Banks
