Gracing the front of your favourite magazine this month is award winning Essex singer Jo Harman. Jo picked up the Best Female Vocalist accolade at the most recent British Blues Awards. She’ll be headlining the Friday night of the Bures Music Festival and then later this year is back in Suffolk to appear the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. That’s on Saturday, October 31 and tickets for that and her Bures show are now on sale.

always a good one and all the musicians involved in my various shows would have no hesitation in making a return visit. Over the past few years bands like Dr Feelgood, Nine Below Zero and Shakatak along with acts such as Ben Waters, Mike Sanchez and Mud Morganfield have all graced the New Wolsey stage bringing in different audiences to the ones who normally frequent the premises.

While Ipswich’s New Wolsey has always been and should always be a theatre venue, its impressive stage, great acoustics and the wonderful view from each and every one of the 400 seats all combine to make it a superb place for concerts. The backstage and front of house areas are pretty impressive as well and every single act I’ve promoted at the New Wolsey has been full of praise for the place. The whole experience for visiting musicians (and of course the acting fraternity as well) is

Last year I had the great pleasure of promoting Steemy Dan at DanceEast on the Ipswich waterfront. The place was packed for a superb evening of Steely Dan favourites. The band are back again in September, this time at the New Wolsey. Founded by vocalist and bassist Bob Cushing, Steemy Dan do Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s songs and complex arrangements proud, so much so that if you shut your eyes you could be forgiven for thinking you’re listening to the real thing. Steemy Dan’s New Wolsey debut is on Wednesday, September 30. A month later, on my birthday in fact, the UK’s top female blues singer, Jo Harman, is at the New Wolsey. She won the Best Female

Another great night of music to flag up for the autumn at the New Wolsey is one being put on by Terry Dash Music. On Sunday, November 8 he brings the tremendous singer Si Cranstoun to town. Si has a big following in rock’n’roll circles and the demand in all things vintage at the moment will ensure a big and colourful crowd for that one. I can’t praise Si highly enough. His voice has all the qualities of Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson so that will give you a good indication of just how good the man is. Long may both theatre and music share the spotlight at the New Wolsey. The venue is a real jewel in Ipswich’s crown.

Who doesn’t like a good story? I don’t just mean books and novels but stories in all their forms: films, TV dramas, soaps, news (stories don’t have to be fiction) and even conversations. There’s fair few of us who aren’t interested when someone says “You’ll never guess what happened to me yesterday?” Unless it’s boring Bob from the warehouse who wants to tell you how long it took to download the new season of Storage Hunters to his phone. But generally we all love to hear stories – gossip – tales – rumours, call them what you want, we devour them.

Many of our regions theatres do programme strongly for children but this month things go a step further in Bury St Edmunds with a dedicated Children’s Art Festival running from the 22nd June until July 6th. The EP is out now on Hello Thor records but there are only 50 copies of it available to buy (with hand painted covers), so get on it quick.

It’s with utter joy that I received an email recently, saying that the singer from Alloy Ark had been hard at work on new material and that an EP was coming soon. Alloy Ark are one of my favourite bands we’ve covered on the show, and their single Blue is probably my standout track. They were twee and indie pop, but songs like Blue had a raw grunge feel which really hit home. The music was the perfect accompaniment for Dani Appadoo’s dreamy vocals.

The BBC Introducing Uploader has been as busy as ever, with one artist in particular catching my attention. Kolomo is the stage name of Will Rhys, who says he has finished “the best part of an album” and just wants to get it heard. Listening to songs he’s uploaded, including Stay and Let’s Dance, Fast forward a few years and Dani is back I was instantly reminded of Metronomy, with her Thé EP, which is under the alias Inad. which is never a bad thing. Her voice remains as sweet and delicate as it was with Alloy Ark, and the keyboard that It’s ideal listening for a summer’s day with sounds like a toy also returns. Dead Rat Orchestra

Find us on Facebook: “grapevinelive” being said about Dead Rat Orchestra, in the mainstream press at least. A while ago the band came into BBC Radio Suffolk armed with a 6ft log and meat cleavers and went on to perform one of the most outstanding sessions we’ve ever had. They followed this up with a show about centuries-old vigilante songs, and then went on a tour using a canal boat as the mode of transport. For their new tour, titled Tyburnia, Dead Rat Orchestra are once again looking to the past and will be playing at former sites of public executions. They say they’ve created a soundtrack that features songs “that were composed by or for those condemned to dance the Tyburn jig”, Tyburn being a place in London where public executions were held for 700 years. The tour is nationwide but will pass through Ipswich, Norwich, Cambridge and Colchester. Finally, it was good to have Ryan Gallant in the studio recently. Ryan goes under several names - including NVU and Muckaniks - and continually impresses us with his production of hip hop, house and electronica. He’s become well known locally for his work with Richard Osborne and Flexx Tyler, and along with the likes of Kayzee, Deadpoole and Brooches shows there’s a wealth of talented producers in Ipswich. The next stage, hopefully, will be getting more of them on stage at the local venues. Richard

Members of Sudbury Choral Society, the singers of vocal groups Musicology and The Accidentals as well as the good parishioners of various Suffolk churches would argue that there most certainly is. Undaunted, David enjoys all of the above and more away from the day job at BBC Radio Suffolk.

There is a risk that al fresco events such as this may become Jennifer Pike i n c r e a s i n g l y uncommon - English Heritage have had to abandon their outdoor concerts at places such as Audley End and even Kenwood House in London. In today’s financial climate, getting a promoter to commit to the expense of turning a large patch of grass into a concert venue is not easy, so do support Picnic in the Park on the 3rd July if you can.

The other Ip-Art event worthy of note is the return to Ipswich of violinist Jennifer Pike, whose star is shining brighter than ever following trips to New York and the Far East. Jennifer teams up once again with the Ipswich Orchestral Society for a concert on the 27th June and conductor Adam Gatehouse is thrilled that

June sees the Ip-Art Festival dust itself down and open the doors of various Ipswich venues for a wide range of arts events. Classical music has always had its place at Ip-Art, albeit that place is not as extensive as you’ll find at the festivals in Bury and Norwich. The main event, as it were, is the Picnic in the Park where Britain’s Got Talent runner up Lucy Kay joins the Heart of England Strings for a fun and varied programme of music from Handel and Bach to Coldplay and Lady Gaga. As you might imagine, this is a selection of traditional favourites mixed with a classical take on chart topping songs. Following her BGT success, Lucy Kay was immediately signed by Sony Classical and has set about her mission to introduce classical music to a wider audience with her fresh and approachable style. Christchurch Park should be the perfect venue and Ip-Art

Find us on Facebook: “grapevinelive” an artist of this calibre still very obviously enjoys coming back to Suffolk. On the bill are two vibrant virtuoso pieces for violin, by Saint-Saens and Rozsa, in a programme which also includes the Easter Festival Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov and one of Tchaikovsky’s best loved symphonies, his fourth. History was never my strong point and I had no idea that there was a Battle of Lowestoft or indeed that this year sees the 350th anniversary of said naval encounter. Apparently, the result was an English victory over the Dutch, so the perfect excuse for a jolly nautical musical celebration ! Step up the Royal Philharmonic to their regular haunt of the town’s Marina Theatre, throw in a goodly variety of tunes with a connection to the sea and the job’s a good’un. In fact, anniversary or not, the programme really is excellent with tunes that have become ingrained in the national consciousness ... Mendelssohn Hebrides, Sailing By from the shipping forecast, Khachaturian’s Spartacus (who remembers the Onedin Line ?), the theme to Desert Island Discs and Elgar’s Sea Pictures. The whole she-bang is topped off with the Henry Wood British Sea Songs Fantasia so things don’t get easier on the ear than this. The only problem is the date - the 3rd July unfortunately means a clash with the Ip-Art picnic. Finally - and staying with Britain’s most easterly town - do you know what it means when an orchestra plays on original, ‘period’ instruments ? If not, you can hear three musicians from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment explain how and why old instruments differ, and why they choose them over their modern counterparts. Suitable for ages 14 and up, this is at 6pm on the 26th June, again at the Lowestoft Marina Theatre.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• BACK PORCH – BACK PORCH LIVE Back Porch’s unique variety of foot-stomping acousticish good-time blues with a dash of skiffle has seen them build a strong following over the past few years. Their music regularly features on local radio and they are well-known in the thriving East Anglian live music scene. The unusual line-up features the strong, melodic vocals of Mike Rushmore (with his right foot on bass drum anchoring the band), world class lead guitarist Jonny Miller, the extraordinarily powerful mouth harp of Steve Graham, with 12-string Tony providing the rhythm. A normal set features classics (eg Crossroads, Bottom Of The Sea, As The Crow Flies, Messin’ With The Kid) alongside sparkling originals plus intriguing re-workings of more unlikely numbers (Hey Joe, White Room). This album was recorded live at Ipswich’s Gemini Studios in front of a small but perfectively formed audience. Tracks: Hole In The Head/Six Page Letter/Sitting At The Station/Girl In The Corner/She’s A Devil Woman/ Goodbye Blues/Keep On Truckin’/Mary Had A Little Lamb/Just To Look/Steam Train/Daytime Blues/She’s Gone/Aint Lettin’ Go Line-up: 12-String Tony Lewis, Jon Miller, Mike Rushmore and Steve Graham

If you love your jazz, you must get over to the first ever Ipswich Jazz Festival . This runs for ten talent-packed days, including leading jazz performers, as well as the finest Suffolk musicians. An attractive variety of gigs run form Friday 19 to Sunday 28 June. Some imaginative thinking by the organisers backed by a sound knowledge of contemporary jazz has produced probably the finest jazz feast that we have ever seen in our region. This event is running in partnership with the Ipswich Arts Festival which, yet again, confirms the fact that our kind of music is amongst the most creative arts ever developed A mix of live performances, films, art and workshops, the ten day festival has something for everyone who enjoys jazz or who wants to learn more about this great music. Many events are free and there are also live gigs by some of the top names in British jazz.

With some 16 different performances across a dozen venues, this is an ambitious event. For fuller details look on the website, www. ipswichjazzfestival.org.uk, where you can also buy your tickets. For players in our region, this will be not just a great opportunity to see some fine jazz but also in some sets an invitation for players to join in. There are so many attractive offers that this note can only touch on a few. The programme starts with a jazz masterclass run by Clare Teal’s impressive band - Jason Rebello on piano, Simon Little, bass, and Matt Skelton, drums. Fans who are players will be invited to join the group on stage and will also get helpful feedback. That evening, also at the New Wolsey Theatre, the award winning lady, herself, takes to the stage. Our first lady of jazz not only sings in supreme style but supports this with her irreverent story telling. On Thursday 18 and 25 June, Ipswich Community

In an interesting innovation, in the afternoon workshop on Saturday 20, bolder souls will be invited to “Learn to sing jazz”! The first half of this will be a workshop session, including vocal technique, an introduction to vocal improvisation and scat singing, style and phrasing and advice on working with a band. The second half will be a masterclass session where participants can perform a song of their choice and get feedback, ideas and advice. This workshop will be led by Andi Hopgood who is currently a vocal coach at Anglia Ruskin University and sings with the London Vocal Project. The venue shifts on Saturday evening to that celebrated jazz pub, The Woolpack, where Jazz Arrivals play a mixture of swingy-jazz-soul-funkyblues with a jaunty nod toward the organ sound of the 50’s and 60’s. At lunchtime on the Sunday The Old Rep in Tower Street will be hosting four popular local bands, including, Phoenix Jazz and Steam on my clothes. The free afternoon session with the Body and Soul Jazz Band at Isaacs on the Quay, will feature a popular mix of jazz including standards from the great American songbook, funk, Latin, blues and also some unusual treatments of modern pop songs. The evening gig at the California Club features Zoe Francis and Jim Mullen backed by the celebrated Chris Ingham trio. It was whilst working in Manhattan as a nanny that Zoe first enrolled at the famous Lincoln Centre in New York for a jazz workshop run by that master jazz pianist Barry Harris. This led to dates with such musicians as Harry Allen and Warren Vache. Zoe is joined by that accomplished guitarist and bandleader in his own right Jim Mullen who has

If that is not enough variety, how many of us have been to a jazz dinner? That is what will be happening on Friday 26 June at Arlingtons Brasserie. There will be live music by the creative jazz quartet Morphology. They draw on cool sounds of 1950s West Coast America and some melodic compositions from the avant-garde scene, adding original pieces by members of the band. All jazz fans will love the musical commendation the band pays to great jazz names such as Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Art Pepper and Lee Konitz. The band has what it calls a fresh acoustic sound, unusually with the absence of drums.

On Saturday 27 June, the afternoon session will be a masterclass in jazz drumming for absolute beginners. This will be led by Ipswich jazz drummer and bandleader Bob Airzee. Bob says that the workshop does not intend to turn everyone into a jazz drummer but it will give an insight into how to play this style and how it crosses over into other genres. It is aimed at drummers who have little or no experience of swing or jazz and would like to expand their knowledge. Bob is the drummer and musical director for Swing Machine Big Band and the percussionist and musical director for Horn Factory Big Band. In addition he is also a member of several small jazz groups in Ipswich, runs the Ipswich Jazz Collective and is a full time drum teacher. A further highlight of the festival will be the impeccable Noemi Nuti on the evening of Saturday 27 June. She will be accompanied

by her celebrated band led by probably the UK’s outstanding trumpeter, Quentin Collins, with Andrew McCormack, piano, Tim Thornton, bass, and Ernesto Simpson, drums, in a set that mixes the best Brazilian and British jazz. Noemi’s compositions echo the Latin American and folk song writing tradition. She will be supported by a short performance by the South Suffolk Youth Jazz Ensemble.

played with just about everybody in British Jazz. Also accompanying her will be East Anglia’s premier jazz trio: Chris Ingham on keyboards, Mick Hutton on bass and George Double on drums.

Back at Isaacs on the Quay on the Sunday afternoon is the unique Ipswich modern jazz trio, the aggressively-named, Weird Rare Animal, who play a selection of modern jazz classics from the jazz masters, but often in a startlingly new way. Charlie Parker as reggae… or funk… Johann Sebastian Bach playing swing. Running throughout the festival are three supporting shows that will certainly be worth a visit. From Tuesday 23 through to Saturday 27 June there will be a showing of classic jazz films at the Ipswich Film Theatre. Also you should visit the jazz photography exhibition at the Subterranean Boulevard gallery. This is an acclaimed display of the work of awardnominated photographer John Watson, featuring some of the greatest stars of jazz across the world. His photography book The Power of Jazz has had rave reviews. In parallel with this display, will be the free Jazz Art and Artefacts Exhibition including live jazz by The Parker Project, a three piece band formed in early 2014. The band plays a selection of Charlie Parker’s well known repertoire with a modern twist. The band consists of Tamas Farkas on guitar, Jack Patching on double bass and Bob Airzee on drums.

really exciting music from that era that doesn’t get heard: Bullitt, Get Carter, The Professionals, Starsky And Hutch, Dirty Harry, The Italian Job, Mission: Impossible, and much more. “We’ve a got a band of rhythm section with guitar and keyboards, and horn section and flute, playing the tracks in the style faithful to the original recordings.” Obviously you won’t just sit there listening, as there’s going to be a visual element as well. Being a massive fan of John Williams musical scores myself, we spoke about the greats. “I really thought it’d be great to cast an album the way someone like Henry Mancini or John Barry would have. I got really lucky with it, because everyone I approached, my very short list of who I thought would be particularly good and who understood the feel of this music, all said yes. Trying to sort of honour the music by reinterpreting it but retaining what makes it so fantastic... that was the challenge. It’s a pretty good challenge as far as challenges go! I remember listening to Pin Ups by David Bowie as a teenager, and thinking that even though it was a cover album, it was completely of a piece with Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust – that was one of the first times I thought that you could do material by others and still have it sound like you. But then, of course, you can go too far in the other direction and deconstruct something to the point that it really isn’t recognisable anymore – what made it so interesting in the first place is no longer there. It’s a balancing act”. Mods and Coppers is on at Colchester Arts Centre on June 20th. I can’t wait!

As I write this the news of the passing of BB King was just announced. A blues legend that I am so glad I made the effort to go and see play live some years ago. In our online age it is just too easy to click a link and play a clip from… well, just about anyone you care to think of. How many times have you seen a video or listened to a recording and thought: “Oh, I’d love to see them play live” and never actually done anything about it? Never miss an opportunity; you never know what is going to happen in life. Live entertainment is what Grapevine magazine has been about for twenty four years now, listing over 1,000 events a month many of which are free, most won’t break the bank.

Our website contains the same listings, but with the addition of reviews, interviews and video clips. We urge you to use these as flavourings. The full experience has got to be live.

There is also the joy of discovering something new – usually in the form of the much maligned ‘support act’. I recently saw BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners The Young’Uns in Colchester and was enthralled by a singer simply called “Moose” who simply sat on a chair in front of a microphone and sang beautifully. Without an audience there is no reason for the performers to turn up, without an

audience and performers our venues may as well shut up shop – I don’t need to labour the point but I think you see where this is going! Yes Grapevine has a web presence in GrapevineLIVE, we have Facebook fans and Twitter followers that we love to banter with but above all we like meeting people at gigs and shows. Hopefully our team will bump into you over the summer festival season. We can’t be at them all but we will do our best. Don’t forget you can add YOUR events to GrapevineLIVE for free to help bring in audiences to your venue be it big or small.
