Our cover star this month is Daniel Storey – now plying his trade as The Knights of Stanley. Daniel’s original style of heart-felt songs are delivered with an intense honesty. A particular favourite of ours is Melancholic Molly. Daniel is in the process of recording his first EP so the best place to listen to him is live – you can catch him at The Greyhound, Botesdale on 22nd January and at PJ McGinty’s on 30th January.

In his first ramblings of 2016, Foz previews a big bash by Soul Kitchen, brings us news of a line-up change in the Back Porch ranks and praises the efforts of The Shaboogamoo Shufflers.

Just when you thought the party season was over along comes East Anglia’s premier party band making a rare public appearance. Soul Kitchen are legends in their own lunchtimes but most of their performances are at private functions, many of them big corporate affairs. Of course, regulars to Ipswich Music Day down the years will be familiar with their wonderful take on soul and ska. I’ve now lost count of the number of times I’ve introduced them on the BBC Radio Suffolk stage but there’s no doubt that every single time they’ve played on Christchurch Park thousands of people have been bopping away to their good time music.

In fact, it won’t be the first time some of the guys have played there. Just before Christmas lead singer Mike Rushmore and the band’s rhythm section opened for the Feelgoods treating us all to the bluesier side of Soul Kitchen. There was a small serving of the madness associated with Ed Chef and his crew but normal service will be resumed on Friday, January 15 when a full portion of funky mayhem will be dished up. Tickets are available in advance from the venue at £10 each. On the night they’ll cost you £12. Doors open at 8pm with the boys’ sensational show commencing at 9pm.

Steve previews theatre and comedy on BBC Radio Suffolk at 5.50pm every Wednesday and presents the Wednesday Breakfast Show on ICR 105.7 FM. He also crochets coasters for disabled sailors...

It’s New Year so that can mean only one thing: yes as predictable as Foz saying “I’ll just pop to the loo” as you get to the bar, it’s time for that traditional January pastime of the ‘look-back’ over the passing year. As usual these are presented in the order in which I saw them rather than in order of preference so without any undue delay, prevarication or procrastination, avoiding hindrance, impediment or obstruction, curtailing any attempts at moratorium, adjournment or postponement and simply getting straight down to it without dawdling, lingering or... hang on, Foz is at the bar. Here’s a list. I’ll start in the same place I did last year which is Jerwood Dance House, home to DanceEast. Butterflies was 2014’s Christmas show but deadlines are such that I saw it too late to include in last year’s list. The life cycle of a butterfly was beautifully outlined by this physical painting of a performance. An interactive delight, it evoked peace and joy in equal measure and it’s theatric effect was such that it ought to be available on prescription from the NHS. The Only Way is Downton: By the time you read this Downton Abbey will probably be TV history and that

presumably signals the end for Luke Kempner’s one-man show. That’s a shame as the pace, timing and exquisite manifestation of character through stance and gesture, when combined with a ludicrous and funny script, brought a life to this show which lifted it way beyond being simply a fan’s indulgence . Easily the funniest thing I saw all year. The Crucible: Arthur Miller’s centenary was well celebrated in 2015 and the New Wolsey Young Company under the direction of Rob Salmon definitely did their bit with this traditional telling of Miller’s most celebrated play. An absolutely super production which was better than almost all of the professional productions I saw last year. A Day in the Death of Joe Egg: Peter Nichol’s play is now nearly fifty years old yet this powerful, distressing and alarmingly funny production by the Gallery Players impressively grappled with the questions it still poses with a tender force which would have done credit to any professional, full-time company. I’d have gone back to see this the very next night and didn’t enjoy anything more all year. Nursing Lives: If you have never been to a masked theatre performance then make sure you catch a Vamos Theatre performance next time they

pass your way. This production was an expectation confounding, enchanting and joyous celebration of memory and the importance places can play in the landscape of an individual’s life.

riot during which members of the audience got to say and do just that – as well as deliver other classic lines. At times it resembled a team building session delivered by Henry Rollins.

Bromance: This witty, circus skills celebration of all things blokey opened the Pulse Festival to universal acclaim. The acrobatics and gymnastic skills were excellent but it was a spinning metal wheel which really gave this show it’s edge.

Parkway Dreams: A docu-drama musical about the planning of Peterborough new-town? Sounds woeful doesn’t it? But Parkway Dreams was a peculiarly original and expectation-confounding show which impressively demonstrated the drama, humour and tragedy contained within the most mundane of stories.

Now Listen To Me Very Closely: Who wouldn’t want to say “I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle” and then fire a NERF gun into someone’s face. Bootwork’s unsophisticated, lo-fi celebration of one man’s obsession with the Terminator films was an immersive

Right, that’s last year done. Time to settle down with the last of the Christmas chocs and the 2016 Spring Programme brochures. Happy New Year.

This may sound like a question from a coldcase review but can you remember what were you doing from the early nineteen seventies until the mid nineteen eighties? Doubtless you’ll have forgotten more of that period than you can remember but if you are of sufficient vintage to have attended any of the Barsham or Albion Fairs that took place across Norfolk and Suffolk during that period then it’s unlikely that you’ll have forgotten the experience.

The former of those has an excellent video (captured by Dean Waite) to go with it, as it is the first single from the record, which was recorded with Tim Bidwell at The Clockwork Owl studio in Brighton’s Kemptown community. There is a fine line between such beauty and tragedy. Chris lost his biggest fan and his father, Nick, at the beginning of the year. I enjoyed the privilege of a conversation with Nick at the aforementioned This Boy Wonders album launch. I’ll never forget how he rightly spoke with such pride about his son’s work. Chris says: ‘With the little bit of money that he left me I decided I would put it towards making this album the way that I wanted to make it.’ Dad would have been, and will be, immensely proud Chris. ‘One of the great things about working with Tim, was that he has a list of incredible musicians that he’s able to call upon to work on the tracks. So I ended up working with some of the best musicians that I have ever had the joy of working with. I feel very lucky to have met and recorded with the artists that I did for Smoke Signals, and no doubt we’ll all be working together again on the next one.’

JANUARY 2016

As well as working great musicians, Oktoba has been gigging in some great locations, namely Chicago and New York. ‘I was visiting Chicago and New York on holiday and felt that I would try to take the opportunity to get some shows whilst I was there. It’s been a dream of mine to play for audiences in America and I was determined to make that a reality. One of the Chicago shows was for Sofar Sounds, a world wide music community that puts on shows at secret location and venues around different cities. I have already been part of some of their shows in England and they really support returning Sofar artists. That was a really amazing experience. Playing on a rooftop terrace to 60 people sitting on the floor overlooking the Chicago skyline, that was pretty Oktoba special. In New York I played at The Rockwood Music Hall. A really well known venue to the city that has seen so many incredible acts pass through it.’ Well, it has now seen another one. For classic Americana and alternative folk, Oktoba and Smoke Signals is essential listening. Graeme

Conductor, musical director, accompanist, organist - is there no end to David’s musical talents? Members of Sudbury Choral Society, the singers of vocal groups Musicology and The Accidentals as well as the good parishioners of various Suffolk churches would argue that there most certainly is. Undaunted, David enjoys all of the above and more away from the day job at BBC Radio Suffolk.

Surely jazz is the most accessible popular music that has ever endured for more than just a few years. Of course, there have been many great innovations and innovators across all aspects of music. Jazz enthusiasts are often seen as being narrow-minded purists but my experience has been that lovers of jazz almost always have great respect for many other musical forms. Most jazz fans love many types of music; the major reason they come back constantly to jazz is the improvisational element. I play with many jazz enthusiasts and most have other likes across the music spectrum. I am not a great reader of music and probably only an average amateur player on my alto, but like most of us who are not just listeners but players too, we can play almost anything in any key. Whether it is great playing or not is another matter, I like it regardless! Perhaps the main difference between jazz players and other musicians is that we can create our own music across almost any background chords, in any key or tempo... and without written charts! Every jazz player will be creating something fresh, original, challenging and hopefully tuneful and vibrant. Although, like all music enthusiasts, there is not just one genre that counts in our passions. I personally love chamber music, the more melodic sectors of opera and ballet, the large orchestras playing the great symphonies (Rachmaninoff can make me cry...) and I can even tolerate a little country and folk. Good pop is okay - but too little of it is both good and original.

I find the ultimate condemnation of the popular end of pop is that fans usually only talk about the great legends in the business such as the Stones, the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Few of those fans care about the here today, gone tomorrow music that you can hear on so many music stations that are almost indistinguishable from each other. Meanwhile, The UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards are now Britain’s premier awards for the jazz community and jazz fans in both Houses. Jazz Broadcaster of the Year Paul Barnes has worked as presenter and reporter for over 40 years, on Today, The World at One, Woman’s Hour, Sunday, Outlook (World Service), Jazz Notes and numerous other series and single programmes. Paul’s love for all music, but especially jazz, has never left him, and the breadth of his enthusiasm is reflected in what he plays on his BBC radio show ‘The Late Paul Barnes’ broadcast across the East of England and even further afield on the net.

FOR MORE ARTICLES COMPETITIONS & INFORMATION

LOG ON TO: Twenty five years have passed since three musicians got together and decided to produce a list of gigs. Back then it was a four-page sheet which listed about 70 gigs in and around Ipswich. The Music Grapevine has grown into the magazine we know today as just “Grapevine” – listing over 1,000 events per month and covering venues across East Anglia. Over the years, the magazine has grown thanks to the support of our advertisers, contributors and readers. There is however a limit on the amount we can squeeze into a free magazine which is why, though we didn’t know it then, the developments at CERN in 1991 would have a major effect on what we do. For it was in Geneva that year that the first website was created – oddly enough, it too was a listings site, an index of the content of the world wide web! Back then we had no concept of how to Google, Tweet, Snapchat or Facebook – in fact, with the exception of tweet, they weren’t even words let alone verbs! So the world changed and we all changed with it without even noticing. As we changed so did our expectations. Today we expect to be able to access everything we want on the internet. Everything from the name of the keyboard played in that obscure band that played support to whats-there-name in Norwich in 1988 to what time my flight leaves on Thursday. In the main, all that information is there. But only because someone put it there – and here’s the rub… if events are not listed in Grapevine

‘GrapevineLive’

or on GrapevineLIVE.co.uk then the chances are no one put them there. We provide the on-line listings service for free and this forms the source of the magazine listings. Sadly, there aren’t enough of us to do it all ourselves. If your favourite venue or band isn’t listed, you could even do it yourself rather than wait for them. In general, tyhanks to those guys at CERN, there is a lot more information available at GrapevineLIVE.co.uk than we could ever hope to shoehorn into our magazine. What our listings do reflect however, is the amazing amount of LIVE entertainment on offer in the region. No one should ever think there is nothing happening in East Anglia. Take a look at our online interviews – there are some big international names there and the reason we do those type of interviews is because they have come to play in our backyard. Others have tried to do what we do with varying degrees of success. Our mission for the last 25 years has been simply to let you now what’s happening, to spread the word – yes, on the Grapevine. Thanks for all your support over the last quarter of a century, here’s to the next twenty-five! 1991 factoids: the big album release was Nirvana’s Nevermind, the Grammy for record of the year went to Phil Collins, Hawkwind played Mildenhall at the East Anglian Rock & Blues Festival, Suzanne Vega played Cambridge Folk Festival as did Clannad and Rod Stewart played Portman Road.
