DERAILED I recently witnessed the aftermath of a train derailment. It could have been worse. No one was hurt. The train wasn’t carrying chemicals or hazardous materials. No homes or businesses were destroyed. But the derailment triggered immense havoc. It... • Created a big mess. • Interrupted train travel for several days. • Caused traffic congestion and detours. • Negatively affected commerce for the shops, restaurants, and businesses located near the tracks. • Complicated the lives of the people who live and work in the area. • Produced stress for both the railroad and the community. • Was costly in terms of time, money, and energy. Sound familiar? Currently many people are feeling that their lives have been derailed. Perhaps that’s you. Do you feel that circumstances over which you have no control have caused your life to be a train wreck, a disaster that may never be cleaned up?

While we have no idea how long this situation will continue, the job of clearing the wreckage and getting back on track can start today. How? It starts in your head. Whatever “train wreck” you’re currently experiencing – illness (your own or a loved one’s), job loss, a crushed relationship, financial problems, disappointment, family issues, disrupted plans, whatever mess has stopped you in your tracks – you can start clearing it up today by taking some action and cleaning up your thinking around it.

4 I SEPTEMBER 2020 I www.grapevinechamber.org

Here are five strategies for thinking and feeling better about your situation: 1. Monitor media consumption - Filling your head with bad news, fear, controversy, discord can cause your brain to spin and ruminate on situations over which you have no control. 2. Do a “brain dump” - Make a list of all the things that are currently causing you stress, worry, concern, frustration. Then go back and highlight or circle the ones that you can do something about and draw a line through those you can’t. 3. Make a PLAN - On another sheet of paper, list all the highlighted or circled items – the ones over which you do have control -- figure out a plan for getting those pieces of your situation back on track, and then take action! Do something. Don’t try to do everything at once. Take on one or two and take some positive steps toward resolution. 4. Schedule “worry time” - Most of us can’t will our brains into immediate and total positivity, so if you feel the need to worry, schedule a specific time to do it. Allow yourself to sit quietly and just worry for 20 or 30 minutes a day. And when that time period is over, get up, stop the worry, and move forward. 5. Choose Positivity - Connect with positive people. Listen to upbeat music. Read or listen to uplifting, inspiring books. Ask for help. Take a walk. Hang on to your faith. Your personal train wreck may look and feel overwhelming, but you CAN get back on track. Here’s the truth – you may not be able to salvage everything. There may be some irreparable damage but if you start with a decision, some brain work, and a plan of action, you’ll figure out how to get rolling again. Women’s Division:

2020 Board of Directors EXECUTIVE BOARD

Happy September! Check out our WOMEN’S DIVISION FUND RAISER - you may purchase a Back To School Supply Pack for $20 to help one child at GCISD or purchase a bottle of wine for $25. We are raising money to fund the purchased Back To School Supply Packs for the 2020-2021 school year. For a simple $20 donation, you will be providing a student with a pack of school supplies to provide the things that will contribute to their learning whether in person in the classroom or through online learning. Here’s the QR code: Whatever method you choose to contribute, from the Women’s Division, we offer a heartfelt THANK YOU. Without your support, we would not be able to serve the students within our district. On Aug. 8th GCISD counselors handed out 1,166 pre-packaged school supply kits. The families in GCISD that signed up before school was out in May that need special assistance received the supplies. We appreciate your support during these trying times.

AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH: John Luis Matheus’ family moved to Grapevine right before his father, Julio Matheus, opened Boi Na Braza Brazilian Steakhouse here in Grapevine in 2000. Julio and his brothers brought the unique dining concept from their native Brazil. John’s parents are both from Brazil, but he was raised in Grapevine from elementary school all the way to graduating from Grapevine High School. Having grown up working in the restaurant with his brother Joshua, it was only natural for John to return to the family business though spending 7 years away after college working in oil & gas and automotive. His journey so far has taken him from Grapevine to Houston to Brazil and all over the world, with a return to good ol’ Grapevine last year with his wife. And to keep that hometown spirit alive, their daughter was born on August 1, 2020, here in wonderful Grapevine. Boi Na Braza was actually the first “finedining” steakhouse in Grapevine, having opened in 2000. The unique, white-bricked building that was built specifically for the steakhouse itself, suits it’s unique dining experience and elegant ambience. With a capacity of 424 occupants and several private rooms, this grandiose venue with a ballroom entrance has been extremely popular for birthday celebrations,

anniversary dinners, graduation parties, wedding ceremonies, corporate parties, and of course date nights. Since COVID came about, there have been a few, big changes to the steakhouse in order to adapt with the times. The family decided to stay true to their traditional Brazilian roots, while at the same time catering to a new way of dining. Don’t worry, the variety of meats are still carved table-side by their Brazilian Gaúcho chefs. Also, the family has also decided to do away with the cigar lounge and instead have a smoke-free bar lounge that will soon feature live Bossa Nova (Brazilian jazz) music. “COVID has hit our family’s restaurant extremely hard and continues to do so, but we are still doing whatever we can to stay open to continue serving our lovely guests and friends those memorable evenings. We need your support now more than ever, so when you think about having a nice evening drink, takeout, delicious bar bites, and/or a fine dinner, come see us and we’ll be sure to give you the fantastic experience you well deserve.” John Luis Matheus, Manager 817-251-9881 john@boinabraza.com 4025 William D. BOTANICAL BLISS Grapevine’s Botanical Gardens offers hours of ourdoor entertainment. With more than eight acres housing as many as seven evolving gardens filled with plants of various species, the Grapevine Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park is a treasure. For those looking to enjoy the great outdoors, it can’t be beat. “The Grapevine Botanical Gardens is special because it’s a place where patrons can go to relax, see the beautiful landscaping, take family photos and even plan their next birthday celebration,” says Amanda Rodriguez, marketing manager. “Another unique quality of the gardens is that it is connected to Heritage Park, a basketball court and tennis courts, so anyone can enjoy a full day outdoors if they wanted,” she says. Several attractions comprise the award-winning Grapevine Botanical Gardens, including the Heritage Park Bicentennial Post Oak, Butterfly Garden, Herb/Kitchen Garden, Memorial Knoll, Ed and Edith Pewitt Educational Pavilion, Julie’s Garden and Compost Corral. In addition to providing self-guided tours for families, the Botanical Gardens offers educational programs for the community. “The garden provides docent-led tours and school field trips through our Go Wild program,” Amanda says.

Grapevine Parks and Recreation’s Go Wild program offers fun-filled, hands-on, outdoor field explorations for children in Pre-K through fifth grade. Students observe nature and become “citizen scientists.” 10 I SEPTEMBER 2020 I www.grapevinechamber.org

In addition, Keep Grapevine Beautiful holds monthly horticulture classes on a variety of topics in the greenhouse. Gardening experts also offer talks at the gardens. Past events have focused on topics like Backyard Birding 101, Pruning and Perfect Perennials for North Texas.

“The community’s response is always positive when it comes to the Botanical Gardens. We always get compliments when we make changes and replant throughout the seasons,” Amanda says. “We believe people are grateful for this park and all it offers.” One offering well-utilized by the community is the recently renovated Bessie Mitchell House, located within the gardens. The Bessie Mitchell House can be reserved for meetings and events and is a popular wedding destination. The facility, which can serve as many as 80 people, boasts a large kitchen, meeting room and a sprawling new outdoor patio. “We have had an average of seven to 10 weddings per year,” Amanda says. In the past, the Bessie Mitchell House only was available for Grapevine residents, but now non-residents may rent the facility.
