Learning an art or craft has been proven to help improve health and wellbeing. In a relaxed environment, you will be surprised at how you can create something you will want to display, wear or give to someone as a gift. Our Arts and Crafts courses are taught by expert and enthusiastic tutors, who all work as professional artists or craftspeople. They will help give you the skills and confidence to experiment and create your own style of working. Our students prove what we have always believed – that anyone can learn to draw and paint or create a functional yet unique craft piece to wear, for the home or as a gift.

ARTS APPRECIATION Gain an insight into various aspects of the history of art and music through our courses and explore how certain themes were portrayed in the context of society, lifestyle and social change. We offer a wide range of languages at all levels here at Aspire Sussex, from the complete beginner through to the advanced learner. Whether you would like to attend a daytime or an evening class, our highly popular language courses offer the widest choice in West Sussex. Classes range from French, German, and Spanish to Modern Greek, Latin and Russian. Most language lessons are taught at five different levels and you can start anywhere from beginner to advanced. We offer short courses, intensives and fast-track if you need to learn in a hurry, as well as one-day workshops and conversation classes. Not sure what level you are? Entry

Level 3

For absolute beginners.

Where you can take part in discussions on a wide range of subjects and can read and write reports and articles. Skills on completion equivalent to AS level.

Entry+ Where you can understand and use familiar words and phrases.

Level 1 Ideal if your knowledge is rusty and you would like to build up confidence.

Level 1+ A continuation of a Level 1 course. Skills on completion, equivalent to a GCSE grade D-G.

Level 2 Where you can deal with everyday situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken.

Level 2+

Level 3+ A continuation of a Level 3 course. Skills on completion equivalent to A2 level.

Level 4 Where you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without too much difficulty and can read and write about complex subjects. Skills on completion equivalent to degree level.

Level 5 For those who can read, write and speak the language with total fluency. Skills equivalent to post-degree level.

A continuation of a Level 2 course. Skills on completion equivalent to a GCSE grade A*-C.

I was very interested in the range of courses that Aspire offer and very pleased that learning for adults is run and offered to the public at a reasonable price. What do you love most about volunteering? I like meeting all the tutors and students as they come into the premises. I enjoy the tasks which are set for me and the way in which I am thanked and valued in the organisation. Volunteering has the added feature of being flexible to the volunteer. Are you a parent/carer of a toddler or primary school aged child? Or an adult (e.g. grandparent) who plays a significant part in a child’s life? Would you like to feel more confident about how you can support your child’s development and enhance their learning experiences? Family Learning courses are informative and most of all fun. Some of our courses are joint, where adults learn alongside children, others are for adults only. Our range of English classes are taught in a friendly and supportive environment by tutors who are experienced in helping individuals to improve their use of spoken and written English as they learn and achieve. Learners will have the ability to work towards a Functional Skills English qualification at an appropriate level. It is important that learners can commit to a high level of attendance. We offer courses at Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and GCSE. Our English courses are FREE, however, an annual, non-returnable assessment fee of ÂŁ15 per course per student is charged. This is so we can get you on the right course to support your achievement. Our Functional Skills English courses start in September and February. CHANGE YOUR STORY LIKE ALLAN A mix of poor education and my own laziness meant that I left school with only a handful of ‘O’ levels and CSE’s. I was lucky in life because I was able to pursue a career path that served me well for 39 years, even with such poor qualifications! Why, at my age, would I want to go back to education? After all, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’ Fundamental gaps in my education were noticeable when my 9 year old started asking for help with homework. How was I going to help her as she got older? Aspire Sussex provided the answer. In August 2016, I enrolled for GCSE English. Going back to academic education after so long was daunting, but our tutor was great. So too were my fellow students and, whilst we all came from different backgrounds, we all found things in common and everyone was treated with respect, like adults and as individuals. With the full support and encouragement of Aspire Sussex and the tutor, the little grey cells began to respond, resulting in my English GCSE certificate, which I’m very proud of. However, my story does not end there. Maths GCSE was the next target. I chose Aspire Sussex again and I was not disappointed. I found the same great tutoring and support with the same inclusiveness, respect and enthusiasm. This was a relatively new syllabus and Aspire Sussex provided all the tools I needed to achieve my goal. I can’t thank Aspire Sussex and my tutors enough. The whole experience inspired me to take an Access to Higher education course at a local college with university as the next stop. Thank you Aspire Sussex for making it all possible and remember you are never too old to learn!

GCSE ENGLISH GCSE courses require a real level of personal commitment and hard work in order to achieve your qualification at the end. Learners are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and progression outside the classroom through the completion of tasks and activities such as homework and revision. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FUTURE LIKE ANNIE ‘I joined the Aspire Maths GCSE course in September 2016. I had taken an adult numeracy course a few years earlier but had really struggled to complete it and just scraped through. However I needed a Maths GCSE so I could begin my teacher training degree. I found that the tutor was so patient and supportive and the rest of the class were so nice that I felt I would let everyone down if I failed. It can sometimes be hard to keep going especially after a full day’s work on a cold dark night, but honestly it’s so worth it. I spent last year teaching Maths (unbelievable!) to small groups in a local secondary school and in September I started my PGCE teacher training so I can teach History which has been my dream for so long. The only thing holding me back was my nemesis ... Algebra! But I did it, so if you’re not sure, go for it, the sense of achievement is incredible!!’

GCSE MATHS STARTING SEPTEMBER 2019 With courses starting September 2019, we offer students the opportunity to gain the new Foundation Level GCSE, a qualification from AQA, in just one year. This course requires a very high level of personal commitment and hard work in order to achieve. Learners are expected to take responsibility for their own learning including regular attendance and completion of homework and revision. In summer 2018, we celebrated as 75% of our students attained a Grade 4 or above. All students wishing to be considered for a place on the course need to attend an assessment and information session and only students at an appropriate level will be enrolled. Some offers of places will be subject to successful completion of a short preparation course in the summer.

ENGLISH AND MATHS GSCE ASSESSMENT SESSIONS These evening sessions will be held from May for classes starting in September 2019 and will include information about the course and a written test. The Maths test will be without the use of a calculator. All of these dates have two sessions, the first being 5pm until 7pm, and the second being 7.30pm until 9.30pm. Attending an assessment in May will enable time to attend a preparation course if needed. All of our assessments take place at our Adult Education Centre in the area stated, unless specified otherwise. If you wish to attend any of these assessments, you must first contact your local centre to book a place. If you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attend any of these dates, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t panic! We will continue to assess individuals throughout the summer, so please contact your local centre as soon as possible and give them your details. They will then be able to contact you and advise you about other assessment opportunities as they arise.

ESOL CLASS AT OPEN HOUSE CRAWLEY

Crawley Open House is a homeless hostel and day centre, assisting individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, especially those who have been marginalised by society and experience disadvantages for a number of reasons. Classes take place to develop and enhance individuals’ skills and English classes are a valuable addition to this. English skills increase individuals’ self-esteem but also enable individuals to feel less excluded as their confidence in using English grows. Aspire Sussex provide English classes, studying basic spoken English with reading and writing. Our aim is to enable the students to have enough confidence in English to cope in a variety of everyday situations, particularly situations where health and safety is the main issue. Social workers at Open House have found that our class members communicate better from attending the weekly sessions. There are currently seven students, all originally from Diego Garcia, with a mixture of levels and experience with English. Some had never learnt English before and were unable to read or write in any language. When the class started a year ago, several students were unable to communicate in English at all, but now they are now able to explain their daily routine and how they are feeling. Those who could not read English are starting to recognise simple key words and have the confidence to pick out these words in a variety of contexts. Higher level students are acquiring a wider range of vocabulary, supported by having the opportunity to read a variety of everyday texts. FEES, FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND INFORMATION Our full fee policy can be found on our website or sent to you on request but here is a summary: HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE COURSE AND VENUE? Visit our website at www.aspiresussex.org.uk or ring 0345 601 0161 for information and advice, to request course information and/or venue information. WHAT DO THE COSTS SHOWN IN THE BROCHURE INCLUDE? The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. Please check the course information sheet for any other costs that may apply. WHAT WILL I RECEIVE WHEN I ENROL? A receipt, Welcome Handbook, venue map (if requested) and course information will be posted or emailed to you when you enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains terms and conditions and useful information and is also available from any of our administrative centres or on the website. DO I HAVE TO PAY ALL THE FEES AT ONCE? Students must agree to pay the full costs of the course but, for courses longer than 10 weeks and costing more than £100, it is possible that payments can be spread over a fixed period of time by direct debit instalments. Please ask for details. CAN I GET A REFUND? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online, our refund policy meets the requirements of the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Students have the right to cancel their enrolment within fourteen working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a full refund will be made. If the course starts within that fourteen day period, the right to cancel applies up to the day the course starts. Refunds can also be issued outside the fourteen day period if a written request is received more than four weeks before the start of the course. An administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. After that time, only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health will be considered. These refunds will be calculated from the date your request is received by the finance team. This must be supported by a certificate from your doctor and an administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. 54

ENROLLING ON A COURSE THAT HAS ALREADY STARTED Students cannot be accepted onto a course until the tutor has agreed. Students who wish to join after the course has started will pay the full course fee for the first two weeks. From week three they will pay the course fee pro-rata. CERTIFICATES If you would like a Certificate of Attendance for a non acreddited course we charge a fee of £3 to produce and post this to you. WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE CHANGES TO MY COURSE? Although courses usually run as advertised, we reserve the right to change or cancel courses as necessary. If occasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control, alternative dates will be arranged and no refunds granted. We do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutor or venue. If it becomes necessary for us to close or cancel a course, refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. WILL I BE ACCEPTED ON TO ANY COURSE I CHOOSE? We reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment. Students must be 19 years of age or over to enrol. Enrolment on some courses is by assessment only. You will be advised if this applies to your course. WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED EXTRA SUPPORT TO ACCESS A COURSE? Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may find the cost of a course prohibitive. WHAT TYPES OF COURSES ARE THERE AND WHAT WILL I HAVE TO PAY? Government Funding Courses: Some of our courses are subsidised by government funding, these have been marked with a C in this brochure to indicate concessions are being offered. Community Learning Courses (for your enjoyment or personal development) which are subsidised by government funding can also be eligible for additional concessions. If you are over 65 you will be entitled to a 10% discount on these courses. Students on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 40% discount on tuition fees, on production of proof of benefit entitlement (Contact us for more information) Employability Skills Courses have concessions available for people on low incomes and some courses are free to students on certain means tested benefits (contact us for more information). English and Maths courses are free if you do not hold a Grade 4 (C) or above at GCSE.

Non-funded Courses: Those courses which do not receive a government subsidy do not have concessions available. These include all Saturday courses and those not marked with a C in the brochure. COURSES REQUIRING AN ASSESSMENT All students wishing to enrol on a course are required to pay an assessment fee of £15.00 per subject. Should we be unable to offer a place on a course following assessment (no course running at the right level in the local area), the £15.00 assessment fee will be refunded. At Aspire Sussex we try to ensure that finance isn’t a barrier to participating in our Adult Education courses. CODE CLUB is a free nationwide network of volunteer-led coding clubs for children aged 9 – 13, giving them the opportunity to learn to code, no matter who they are or where they come from. Sessions are easy-to-follow with step-by-step guides so that young people can make their own games, animations, and websites using coding languages such as Scratch, HTML/CSS, and Python.
