Welcome Welcome to our 2014/15 brochure packed full of learning opportunities for Midhurst, Chichester, Southbourne and Selsey. Whether you are looking to learn new skills, meet new people, have fun or get that qualification to improve your job prospects, we believe we have something for everyone in your local community. Due to reduced government funding and increased costs, we have had to make the difficult decision to make some increases to our course fees. However, we aim to make our learning affordable to everyone and are pleased to still be able to offer discounts to students on means tested benefit and a 10% discount on the tuition fees for qualifying students aged 65 and over. (Please see page 4 & 5 for more details) In addition to the courses in this brochure, we will be developing new and exciting courses throughout the year which will be featured on the homepage of our website and via our student newsletter, which you can sign up to online. Each year we support over 13,000 students to learn, enjoy and achieve. FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions How can I find out more about the course and venue? Visit our website at www.aspiresussex.org.uk or ring 0345 6 01 01 61 for information and advice, to request a course information sheet and/or a venue information sheet with map. What do the costs shown in the brochure include? The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. Students will be expected to provide books or materials where appropriate. What will I receive when I enrol? A receipt, Welcome Handbook, venue map if requested and a course information sheet will be posted or emailed to you when you enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains useful information and our terms and conditions and is also available from any of our administrative centres or on the website. Do I have to pay all the fees at once? Students must agree to pay the full costs of the course but, for courses longer than 10 weeks and costing more than £100, it is possible that payments can be spread over a fixed period of time by direct debit instalments. Please ask for details. Can I get a refund? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online, our refund policy meets the requirements of the Distance Selling Regulation. Students have the right to cancel their enrolment within seven working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a full refund will be made. If the course starts within that seven day period, the right to cancel applies up to the day the course starts. Refunds can also be issued outside the seven day period if a written request is received more than four weeks before the start of the course. An administrative charge of £12 will be deducted from the refund. After that time, only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health will be considered. These refunds will be calculated from the date your request is received by the finance team. This must be supported by a certificate from your doctor and an administrative charge of £12 will be deducted from the refund. Cancellation and refund requests must be made by email to enquiries@aspiresussex.org.uk or letter to The Finance Team, Aspire Sussex Ltd., Ground Floor Unit 10, Donnington Business Park, 86 Birdham Road, Chichester, PO20 7DU. What happens if there are changes to my course? Although courses usually run as advertised, we reserve the right to change or cancel courses as necessary. If occasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control, alternative dates will be arranged and no refunds granted. We do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutor or venue. If it becomes necessary for us to close or cancel a course, refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. Will I be accepted on to any course I choose? We reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment. Students under 16 years of age on the date the course starts will not be accepted on an adult education course. Enrolment on some courses is by assessment only.You will be advised if this applies to your course. What do I do if I need extra support to access a course? Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may be discouraged from joining a course for financial reasons. Please ring 0345 6 01 01 61 or ask for details.

FAQs What types of courses are there and what will I have to pay? Different types of courses are subsidised by government funding in various ways and by different amounts. Aspire Sussex reserves the right to increase fees in the future in line with the government’s funding authorities’ guidance. Community Learning Courses: For your enjoyment and personal development (including leisure courses). Students on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 70% discount on tuition fees on production of proof of benefit entitlement. Students over 65 and not on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 10% discount on the tuition fees providing they work less than 16 hours per week. Means tested benefits are Jobseeker’s Allowance/Council Tax Benefit/Housing Benefit/Pension Guarantee Credit/Income Support/Working Tax Credits (if household income on the award notice is below £25,000)/Employment and Support Allowance (work related activity group) or Universal Credit. Qualification and Work Related Skills Course (including ESOL): These government listed courses attract funding at a higher rate and lead to specific qualifications or work related skills. Please see below for eligibility for discounts or free courses. Students 16-18 years of age, who are not in full time education, will not be required to pay tuition fees or exam costs on Qualification and Work Related Skills Courses. They may be required to pay some additional course costs on some courses. Students aged 19 and over, for courses up to and including level 2, will pay no tuition fees if: They are on Jobseekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (work related activity group only) or Universal Credit that is due to being unemployed and skills training is required. Some additional course costs may be applicable. They are unemployed and on a state benefit where skills training will help them into work. Some additional course costs may be applicable. (Conditions apply) In addition to the above, students aged 19-23 years only will pay no tuition fees if: They do not already have a full Level 2 qualification (e.g. 5 GCSEs grade A*-C, an A Level, an NVQ Level 2) and wish to study on an entry level or level 1 course in order to progress to a full level 2 course. Some additional course costs may be applicable. They enrol on their first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification course. Some additional course costs may be applicable. Students between 19-23 years and studying for a government listed level 3 course and above, will also pay no tuition fees if: They are on Jobseekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (work related activity group only) or Universal Credit that is due to being unemployed and are required to undertake skills training. Some additional course costs may be applicable. They are unemployed and on a state benefit where skills training will help them into work. Some additional course costs may be applicable. (conditions apply) Free English and Maths English and Maths courses (including GCSEs, for those who do not already hold a GCSE A*-C) are free to most students subject to meeting funding eligibility.
Are you looking to study a Level 3 and above qualification and are aged 24 or over? If the answer is yes you may be entitled to a loan for your learning. This means that you will no longer have to pay for your course up front and will not need to pay anything until you are earning £21,000 and over per year. These loans will give financial support for tuition fees charged for these courses and are administered through the Student Loan Company. Aspire Sussex is pleased to be able to offer high quality ICT courses at all levels. Would you like to gain the best computer skills or demonstrate that you already have them? The British Computer Society offers a wide choice of units at Levels 1-3. Gain confidence, knowledge and understanding, and enhance your employment opportunities. New modules at Level 1 add flexibility and bring this qualification bang up to date. Tailor your learning, choose three modules from: Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Using Collaborative Technologies. Also available as the original ECDL Essentials combination, IT User Fundamentals, Using Email & the Internet and Security for IT Users. Courses at Level 3 are available as Online or Blended Learning. Courses Language and Communication Skills With five different languages on offer in your local area and ten across West Sussex, you may well be spoilt for choice with our programme. Our language courses are invaluable for holidays, work and travel and will help you to learn more about these countries' diverse cultures.
Levels for Languages These descriptions are provided to help you choose the most appropriate language course. Please note that the full range of language levels is not available at all locations. Entry: For absolute beginners. Entry+: Where you can understand and use familiar words and phrases. Level 1: Ideal if your knowledge is rusty and you would like to build up confidence. Level 1+: A continuation of a Level 1 course. On completion, equivalent to a GCSE grade D-G. Level 2: Where you can deal with everyday situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Level 2+: A continuation of a Level 2 course. Skills on completion equivalent to a GCSE grade A-C. Level 3: Where you can take part in discussions on a wide range of subjects and can read and write reports and articles. Skills on completion equivalent to AS level. Level 3+: A continuation of a Level 3 course. Skills on completion equivalent to A2 level. Level 4: Where you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without too much difficulty and can read and write about complex subjects. Skills on completion equivalent to degree level. Level 5: For those who can read, write and speak the language with total fluency. Skills equivalent to post-degree level.
