ABOUT ASPIRE SUSSEX
WELCOME to our Summer programme and to Aspire Sussex. You will find us a welcoming and friendly place to be, where learners have great opportunities to develop their confidence and their skills. We encourage all our learners to be ambitious and believe they can succeed, whether you want to progress with your learning or find employment, we want to ensure that your learning is enjoyable and helps you achieve your goals. We take great pride in the quality of our programmes and the success of our learners. Whatever your starting point you will be supported by a very committed and wellqualified teaching and support team. New to this programme is a much larger range of courses offering 100% concession for those on certain benefits. These are marked in the brochure with symbol and are aimed at giving learners the skills and confidence to get into work and to live independently. If you are a local charity, housing association, local authority or other partner that has clients who may benefit from one of these courses please do contact us, as we may be able to put on something bespoke to meet your needs. PREVENT Aspire takes its Safeguarding responsibilities to its staff and students very seriously and that encompasses the Prevent duty. SUE IS A first time learner with spire usse and was given our Drawing for Beginners course in Chichester as a gift by her family. “I didn’t have artistic experience before taking the course and I feel I have learned a lot. My favourite part was learning how to draw at home and seeing a difference as the lessons progressed. I will hopefully carry on as I can get out and stretch my artistic skills. Where you can take part in discussions on a wide range of subjects and can read and write reports and articles. Skills on completion equivalent to AS level.
Entry+ Where you can understand and use familiar words and phrases.
Level 1 Ideal if your knowledge is rusty and you would like to build up confidence.
Level 1+ A continuation of a Level 1 course. Skills on completion, equivalent to a GCSE grade D-G.
Level 2 Where you can deal with everyday situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
Level 2+ A continuation of a Level 2 course. Skills on completion equivalent to a GCSE grade A*-C.
Level 3+ A continuation of a Level 3 course. Skills on completion equivalent to A2 level.
Level 4 Where you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without too much difficulty and can read and write about complex subjects. Skills on completion equivalent to degree level.

We provide a range of business services that can be offered either at your site or at our local centre, giving you the flexibility to fit staff training around your business demands. Our services include: • Bespoke courses – we have delivered Excel training to staff at a West Sussex charity, Tai Chi and cake decorating for a local business awayday and photography for a local estate agent. Just ask us and we will let you know if we can deliver it! • Room hire – we have training rooms at our centres across West Sussex. All of our training rooms are equipped with interactive white boards and can be used for one off or longer term hire. • Exam facilities – we can host your exam and provide an invigilator. • Leisure activities – your staff may like to enrol on one of our evening, weekend or day courses, which we can also deliver at your premises. • Specialist business, management and wellbeing courses – we run specialist business courses including leadership, social media, emotional resilience, powerful presentations and much more! • Staff Upskilling – if you have staff who would like to improve their English and Maths, who did not get a grade 4 or above (previously a grade C or above) they are likely to be eligible for a free place to study for a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification. If we have a group of students we can run these in your workplace, otherwise your staff can join a local course. We also run English Language courses for Speakers Of Other Languages, which can be delivered in local workplaces as well as in our centres.

ENGLISH AND MATHS
Are you apprehensive about adjectives or frightened by fractions? Maybe you need a qualification for your CV or you feel you cannot support your child with their homework? At Aspire Sussex, our English and Maths classes are taught in a friendly and supportive environment by tutors who are experienced in helping individuals improve their English and Maths skills. We offer courses at Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and GCSE and students will have the opportunity to work towards a qualification at an appropriate level. It is very important that students can commit to a high level of attendance in order to help them achieve their learning goals. Our courses are FREE for students who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 (C) or above at GCSE. An annual, non-returnable assessment fee of ÂŁ15 per course per student is charged. For further details, please see the Assessments and Level Check section below.
Functional Skills English and Maths Functional Skills courses start in September and February. To start on a September course, you will need to add your name to the waiting list for our initial assessments which will take place in the summer of 2020.

Level 2 GCSE
GCSE ENGLISH AND MATHS GCSE courses start in early September and end with exams in May/June, and require a real level of personal commitment and hard work in order to achieve your qualification at the end. Learners are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and progression outside the classroom through the completion of tasks and activities such as homework and revision. In Maths, GCSE students will be working to gain the New GCSE AQA qualification at Foundation Level over one year. You may be required to take a short preparation course in the summer before starting a GCSE course. This will be decided through the assessment. Our GCSE assessments will begin May 2020 for starting the course in September 2020. We recommend attending an assessment as soon as possible to secure a place and to enable attendance to a preparation course if necessary.
Do you need a Maths qualification like Sheila? SHEILA PASSED OUR Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths in 2018 and progressed onto the Maths GCSE, which she completed summer 2019. “A few years ago, I wanted a change of career. It became apparent that Maths was essential. At first, I could not imagine attempting to remedy my lack of knowledge. Then I came across ‘Functional Skills in Maths’ and an organisation called Aspire Sussex. I joined the class with some trepidation, remembering bad experiences from school days, but Maths lessons with Aspire are so far removed from the way I was taught at school. The classes are small and friendly. My tutor explained things clearly and with endless patience. Nobody was ever made to feel stupid in the lessons. There was always encouragement, both from the teacher and from fellow students. I actually began to enjoy Maths! I passed Level 2 in Functional Skills, then, with my confidence growing, I dared to believe that with some hard work and determination Maths GCSE might be attainable, which I did pass. I am delighted that I no longer have that gap in my education. I recommend studying with Aspire. Whatever level you are at, they will help you to the next stage. ENGLISH AND MATHS ASSESSMENTS
All new students wanting to attend any English or Maths course will need to attend an initial assessment session in order to meet with a tutor and complete a level check in the form of a written test. This is to ensure you get the right course to support your achievement. There will also be information provided about the course. Assessments MUST be booked in advance on 0345 601 0161 or in person at a centre. An annual, non-returnable assessment fee of £15 per course per student is charged.
GCSE Assessment Dates Further assessment dates will be available later so call to register your interest even if you are not available on any of these sessions. These assessments take place at our Adult Education Centre in the area stated unless otherwise specified.

FEES, FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND INFORMATION Our full fee policy can be found on our website or sent to you on request but here is a summary: HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE COURSE AND VENUE? Visit our website at www.aspiresussex.org.uk or ring 0345 601 0161 for information and advice, to request course information and/or venue information. WHAT DO THE COSTS SHOWN IN THE BROCHURE INCLUDE? The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. Please check the course information sheet for any other costs that may apply. WHAT WILL I RECEIVE WHEN I ENROL? A receipt, Welcome Handbook, venue map (if requested) and course information will be posted or emailed to you when you enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains terms and conditions and useful information and is also available from any of our administrative centres or on our website. DO I HAVE TO PAY ALL THE FEES AT ONCE? Students must agree to pay the full costs of the course but, for courses longer than 10 weeks and costing more than £100, it is possible that payments can be spread over a fixed period of time by direct debit instalments. Please ask for details. CAN I GET A REFUND? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online, our refund policy meets the requirements of the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Students have the right to cancel their enrolment within fourteen working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a full refund will be made. If the course starts within that fourteen day period, the right to cancel applies up to the day the course starts. Refunds can also be issued outside the fourteen day period if a written request is received more than four weeks before the start of the course. An administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. After that time, only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health will be considered. These refunds will be calculated from the date your request is received by the finance team. This must be supported by a certificate from your doctor and an administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. 54

ENROLLING ON A COURSE THAT HAS ALREADY STARTED Students cannot be accepted onto a course until the tutor has agreed. Students who wish to join within the first 2 weeks will pay the full course fee. From week three they will pay the course fee pro-rata. CERTIFICATES If you would like a Certificate of Attendance for a non accredited course we charge a fee of £3 to produce and post this to you. WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE CHANGES TO MY COURSE? Although courses usually run as advertised, we reserve the right to change or cancel courses as necessary. If occasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control, alternative dates will be arranged and no refunds granted. We do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutor or venue. If it becomes necessary for us to close or cancel a course, refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. WILL I BE ACCEPTED ON TO ANY COURSE I CHOOSE? We reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment. Students must be 19 years of age or over to enrol. Enrolment on some courses is by assessment only. You will be advised if this applies to your course. WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED EXTRA SUPPORT TO ACCESS A COURSE? Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may find the cost of a course prohibitive. If your financial circumstances mean you cannot afford the fees, please ring 0345 601 0161 or ask for details.

WHAT TYPES OF COURSES ARE THERE AND WHAT WILL I HAVE TO PAY? Government Funded Courses: Some of our courses are subsidised by government funding. These have been marked with £ £ in this brochure to indicate that concessions are being offered. Community Learning Courses (for your enjoyment or personal development) are subsidised by government funding. These can also be eligible for additional concessions. If you are over 65 you will be entitled to a 10% discount on these courses. Students on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 45% discount on tuition fees, on production of proof of benefit entitlement. In addition, those courses with a £ are free to those on means tested benefits or low incomes. Contact us for more information. Employability Skills Courses are free to students on low incomes and certain means tested benefits. Contact us for more information. English and Maths courses are free if you do not hold a Grade 4 (C) or above at GCSE. Non-funded Courses: Those courses which do not receive a government subsidy do not have concessions available. These include most Saturday courses and those not marked with a £ or £ in the brochure. COURSES REQUIRING AN ASSESSMENT
All students wishing to enrol on a course are required to pay an assessment fee of £15.00 per subject. Should we be unable to offer a place on a course following assessment (no course running at the right level in the local area), the £15.00 assessment fee will be refunded.
