welcome

ABOUT ASPIRE SUSSEX Dear Students, Welcome to our Summer programme.

In this brochure you will find an overview of our range of skills, qualification and personal interest courses with stories from past students to inspire you to have a go! Due to the pandemic our programme is subject to some changes and our website is the best place for you to get up-to-date and detailed information about courses www.aspiresussex.org.uk At Aspire Sussex we are committed to providing as much support as possible to our students, and more so during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020 we created the Aspire Cloud. Aspire Cloud allows students to study online, and was initially set up to respond to lockdown to enable students to finish courses that they had started in classrooms. However, we have been expanding the range of courses available online in the last year as students have told us that for some this an easier way to study around work and life commitments. We will continue to offer online options whilst bringing back some of our face to face learning that had to be paused. We are excited about the Government’s announcement to provide free Level 3 qualifications for those who have not studied at this level before. We will be expanding our offer in this area so please keep an eye out for further announcements on our social media or monthly learner bulletin. We are delighted that you are considering taking one of our Adult Education courses and look forward to welcoming you either online or face to face this Summer. We hope you enjoy your course.

Robyn Kohler Chief Executive Officer

PREVENT Aspire takes its Safeguarding responsibilities to its staff and students very seriously and that encompasses the Prevent duty. Aspire is required by HM Government to make you aware of the concepts surrounding both the Prevent duty and British values and these will be discussed in class from time to time. It is intended to protect vulnerable people against grooming. Ofsted and other observers will ask you about this when they visit. Thank you for helping us to create a supportive and positive learning environment for all. 2

Join us in the Cloud

cloud online learning

Online learning with Aspire Sussex is a great way to join a group of likeminded people wanting to learn something new, from the comfort of your own home. If you cannot attend a course with us in one of our centres, join us in one of our many virtual classrooms. Aspire Cloud is our online learning platform that provides you, other students and our tutors a place to meet, learn and collaborate on work from your screen at home. We’ve created useful guides and resources to help you get onto your course whether you are on a laptop studying for an exam, or on your tablet taking part in an exercise class. For more information on attending online learning with Aspire Cloud, please go to our website or email enquiries@aspiresussex.org.uk

Are you apprehensive about online learning? “Before the lockdown, I was absolutely loving my lessons, they were fun and relaxed and Steve, our tutor, is great. When Steve explained we would be doing online classes during lockdown, I was apprehensive but, as always, Steve helped us to relax and enjoy the experience. During the first session Steve explained how things would be done. We learned so much and it felt like normal as we could see the work shown on our screens, we laughed and joked, and we put our opinions across as we would do if we were in the same room. I would say to anyone worried about online classes, embrace the experience and the comfort of your own home, there is nothing to be frightened of. I could not have got through the course without the amazing help, support and belief from Steve and the other students so a massive thank you to you all!” 4

Do you need a qualification to achieve your dream job like Karen? Karen has taken several of our Level 2 Certificate distance learning courses which lead her onto our Support Teaching and Learning in Schools (STLS) course. She is now a full time Teaching Assistant! “I had been working as a Food Service Assistant in a school for 7 years when I was told I was great with the Special Needs pupils. I then volunteered to help them in class and I absolutely loved it! I needed qualifications to apply for a Learning Support Assistant role though and I had heard about Aspire Sussex’s Distance Learning courses, which I could do at home without any childcare problems. My girls and I did ‘our homework’ every evening and I passed my first course within 3 months. 19 months later, I have just started my fifth distance learning course as well as branching out to the STLS course and I can’t see me ever wanting to stop learning! After taking the STLS course, I can hardly recognise myself from the person I was 19 months ago. The support I had from the school and my assessor and the understanding I have gained from the courses have given me belief in myself. My husband is delighted to see me aiming for a better-paid job and my younger daughter always found settling to homework difficult but having me do my work beside her has motivated her. In school, course knowledge gives me courage to offer my opinion. When I started the STLS course I had already taken three Distance Learning courses and I found I could express myself better in assignments, relating the volunteering work I was doing with pupils to the understanding my courses gave me. The more courses I take, the more I learn and the more the pieces of the Special Needs jigsaw fit together. I am pleased to say that I have been offered a full time Teaching Assistant position at the school I am at, starting in September 2020.” Her tutor Margaret says, “Over the past 19 months, I saw Karen grow in confidence and became the outstanding student she is today; at our first meeting, Karen was almost apologetic for daring to enrol on a course! Her daughters are in awe of their mum and during her STLS in-school assessment, I saw a confident Karen supporting a variety of children with learning difficulties. Colleagues told me about the valuable work she was doing as she built relationships with vulnerable students and how her feedback to staff enabled new pupil targets to be set and achieved.” 8

The lessons were structured and well planned with an abundance of materials and resources available. The learning curve was quite steep at times and you do need to dedicate study time, but the tutor was skilled, knowledgeable, friendly and above all very patient! Also, the people in my study group were supportive of each other. Looking back, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed every lesson, which is something I never imagined I would say about Maths! My results exceeded all of my expectations and I cannot recommend Aspire and the course highly enough.” 20

Why do Pilates with Aspire Sussex? We asked Jacqueline’s class in littlehampton “To keep supple and keep active. I’m gradually getting back where I was, wherever that was!” “I started because I used to have lower back problems and I noticed if I do the Pilates, it has stopped the occasional twinge or problems so it has made a huge difference. It’s made me really aware of the back and keeping your shoulders back.” “I enjoy it and I find myself walking different. When we’ve finished, I’m walking more upright, everything stands together, and I think you’re very good.” We advise all students interested in our health and fitness programme to consult their doctor should they have any concerns about joining one of our courses. All students must complete a Health Check form prior to participating in any Fitness and Health class. Don’t forget to ask us about fees and financial support

Writing and Literature Learn to write stories, articles and poetry or appreciate literature with our Writing and Literature courses. They are suitable for all levels – whether you’re just starting out or are ready to publish your first book. Want a taste of what our courses include? The sonnet below was written by one of our students, Gillian, when asked in class to write a poem in a very structured format. About the poem and the exercise, Gillian says, “It enabled my mind to work creatively with the themes and emotions whilst giving me a very established structure to put the words into.”

Sonnet “All is fair in love and war” your Dad said

A dark silhouette on the Village Green

Too much love on show will bring us disgrace.”

A small voice asks his Nan what it means.

“We must carry on, put on a brave face.

I must live on, even though you are dead. All my dreams are gone, forever unwed,

An empty space at the table, your place.

My eyes blank behind a veil of black lace

Greets joggers, play-school Mums and passers-by She pauses, to tell the truth with a lie?

A shadow passed of all that might have been. But how to explain why he had to die?

Each new day of my life I face with dread; Don’t forget to ask us about fees and financial support

Photography

Our photography courses range from giving you an understanding of how to use your camera, to developing the technical side with our expert tutors and photographers teaching you about composition and lighting and how to develop your creative skills on location through photographing people and animals. Most of these courses focus on DSLR cameras.

Jackie – Winner of our 2019 Photo Competition “It was great to be back in a classroom, learning a new skill and meeting new people. This photo was taken on a morning with a slight mist and I like the fact that the light is quite muted, making the photo look almost sepia in tone.”

Arts and Crafts

If you want to develop your artistic skills or learn a craft you’ve always been interested in, see our wide range of Arts and Crafts courses! There are courses for a variety of skill levels in topics such as woodcarving, drawing and painting, textiles, needlework, pottery, and many more! Check them out on our Arts and Crafts webpage.

Could your artistic interest bloom into something more, like Chris? “I have always had an interest in art and working with wood. 20 years ago, I was given an antique set of woodcarving tools which I wanted to learn how to use properly, so I enrolled on an Aspire woodcarving course and have been attending ever since. Under the guidance of my tutor Claire, I have learnt techniques in carving and tool sharpening, the properties of different woods, good composition and design amongst other skills. Looking back over my work, I can see the progression from naive carvings to more accomplished pieces. I have especially taken inspiration from medieval carvings found in cathedrals and churches and my very first carving was a Green Man, as was my most recent (a green man being a pagan symbol taking the form of a head sprouting some form of foliage). Over 20 years, my interest in carving has deepened and I wanted to pursue it even further. After a lot of thought and research I applied for a BA course in Historic Carving at City & Guilds London Art School, which, due to my portfolio of work produced during my evening classes and reference from my tutor, I was accepted for. Later this year I will start the 3 year course, and on completion I will look to take up a full-time carving career.” As they did with Chris, our tutors will support you on your learning journey as you progress to achieve your learning aims, whatever they may be! Our courses are delivered across West Sussex, at our centres, through our partnerships with schools and community centres. and online on Aspire Cloud. Can’t find a course near you?
