LOOKING FOR A CREATIVE WAY TO SPEND YOUR ‘ME TIME’ LIKE SUE? Sue has been a student in our Pottery and Ceramics: Mixed Ability course in Westergate for about three years. What keeps you coming back? My whole week is taken up with lots of jobs and the course is ‘My Time’. Our teacher, Malcolm, is great and so encouraging. He has such a vast experience of ceramics. I am learning all the time. The group is supportive and a source of inspiration and we have a great time. What is your favourite part of the Pottery and Ceramics course? The excitement of seeing your creation completed, out of the kiln. My favourite piece I’ve made in class is a toadstool house that I created for my son, which used coiling and slabbing. What has been the hardest part of this course? Still trying to tackle the wheel! What are your top tips for new learners? We all started as learners and you never stop learning. Take the plunge and join a class, you will not regret it.

Our Cookery and Cake Decorating courses are designed to give you the skills to be confident at home and replicate your work on your own. WANT TO SHARE YOUR PASSION LIKE LINDA? Linda has been a cookery and cake decorating tutor with Aspire Sussex for over 15 years. I started baking cakes and cookies for friends and family from a young age and was hooked from then on. I found that baking and designing cakes became my passion in life! I have been designing and creating beautiful wedding & celebration cakes for over 25 years and over that time became interested in passing on my knowledge and skills via teaching. I love being part of a team of staff that provide creative, engaging and immersive learning experiences in Adult learning. I teach a range of courses & workshops, suitable for beginners through to those with more experience in all aspects of cake decorating and sugar flowers. I love helping people to achieve their personal aspirations and inspire them to learn and enjoy themselves! Alongside other courses, Linda will be teaching a variety of our seasonal courses this year, such as Home Baking: Tasty Treats for Easter (B07004XD19), Parent and Child: Halloween Cupcakes (B07007XC19) and Piping Techniques for Christmas Cakes (B07002XD19).

For absolute beginners.
Where you can take part in discussions on a wide range of subjects and can read and write reports and articles. Skills on completion equivalent to AS level.
Entry+ Where you can understand and use familiar words and phrases.
Level 1 Ideal if your knowledge is rusty and you would like to build up confidence.
Level 1+ A continuation of a Level 1 course. Skills on completion, equivalent to a GCSE grade D-G.
Level 2 Where you can deal with everyday situations likely to arise when travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
Level 2+
Level 3+ A continuation of a Level 3 course. Skills on completion equivalent to A2 level.
Level 4 Where you can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without too much difficulty and can read and write about complex subjects. Skills on completion equivalent to degree level.
Level 5 For those who can read, write and speak the language with total fluency. Skills equivalent to post-degree level.

Allow time between classes for homework/reading etc. Try something different and most of all, ENJOY.” What is Giovanna’s top tip for learning? “When you learn a language, surround yourself with it! Use social media to follow people, places and institutions from the country or countries where the language is spoken. Listen to songs in the target language. Watch films. Focus on new vocabulary.” 48

BECOME A VOLUNTEER LIKE NICK Nick studied with Aspire and now volunteers as a Tutor’s Assistant. Aspire supported me through my English and Maths GCSEs in 2010, when I also joined a Latin language class. From there, I enrolled on a Classical History class, and eventually went on to study Classics with the Open University with the encouragement of both my tutor and fellow students. I’m now a Volunteer Tutor’s Assistant with Aspire, working alongside the same tutor and class that supported me all those years ago! Interested in a course which has already started? I have always been interested in the beauty industry, as I’m sure many young women are too! I found the ad online and the hours/days were perfect as they fitted right in with school hours. My youngest has just started nursery so this was ideal. How did you find the course? The course was so much fun as well as gaining knowledge and practical skills to kick start my career in beauty. MATHS AND FUNCTIONAL SKILLS MATHS
Our range of Maths classes are taught in a friendly and supportive environment by tutors experienced in helping individuals achieve their learning goals. We offer courses to enable students to work at Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1, Level 2 and GCSE. Our courses are free, subject to certain funding conditions; however a charge is made for assessment before starting.
Functional Skills Maths Frightened by fractions, daunted by decimals, need a qualification for your CV or feel you can’t support your children? This course also provides an excellent foundation for students considering progressing to the GCSE. This is your opportunity to improve your skills and, where appropriate, students will be able to work towards a Functional Skills Maths qualification. All students are required to attend regularly and take responsibility for their learning, which includes homework and revision. The 18 week course will start again in September 2019, ending in February 2020.
LOOKING TO COMPLETE YOUR MATHS QUALIFICATION LIKE JADE? Jade passed our Level 1 and Level 2 Maths Functional Skills courses and is now progressing on to do her GCSE. “I didn’t do very well at school and I wanted to prove to myself that I could achieve something. Having a child was another reason I wanted to push myself even further to do so. Aspire has been amazing for me. GCSE MATHS STARTING SEPTEMBER 2019 With courses starting in early September, we offer students the opportunity to gain the new Foundation Level GCSE, a qualification from AQA, in just one year. This course requires a very high level of personal commitment and hard work in order to achieve. Learners are expected to take responsibility for their own learning including regular attendance and completion of homework and revision. In summer 2018, we celebrated as 75% of our students attained a Grade 4 or above. All students wishing to be considered for a place on the GCSE courses need to attend an assessment and information session and only students at an appropriate level will be enrolled. Some offers of places will be subject to successful completion of a short preparation course in the summer. Please see page 77 for more details on how to book an assessment.
WANT TO BECOME CONFIDENT WITH MATHS LIKE AMY? Amy passed her Maths GCSE at grade 5 in summer 2018. “It would be fair to say that Maths has always been a weak spot for me. I decided to go back to college but they required a C grade in Maths. I took the Maths assessment to see what level I was at and was disappointed that I initially wasn’t allowed to start the GCSE. It was suggested for me to do the Functional Skill Level 1. On reflection, this was most certainly the best thing for me as I found that tough. I continued on to the Level 2 after passing and I could see I was already improving. I was then able to enrol on the GCSE Maths course, starting in September 2017. I found it very intense. I can now see why the Functional Skills courses are in place; I don’t think I would have coped with the GCSE if I hadn’t completed those first. I discovered that I wasn’t fearful of Maths anymore and that actually I rather enjoyed it! Something I never thought I would say. Extra tuition sessions were organised for those students who weren’t quite hitting the targets and these were invaluable. Exam time was stressful, having to take a total of 3 different exams but I felt supported throughout and I managed to achieve a grade 5. I have been able to take an Access course and have now been offered places at five universities to study Forensic Science. Becoming confident in Maths has given overall confidence in life. I am no longer scared of Maths and am rather proud of being able to work out discounts in the sales whilst shopping! I would recommend this for anyone who may have difficulties with Maths. If I can do this and achieve well, anyone can!”

ENGLISH AND FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ENGLISH
Our range of English classes are taught in a friendly and supportive environment by tutors who are experienced in helping individuals to improve their use of spoken and written English as they learn and achieve. Learners will have the ability to work towards a Functional Skills English qualification at an appropriate level. It is important that learners can commit a high level of attendance. We offer courses at Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and GCSE. Our English courses are FREE, however, an annual, non-returnable assessment fee of ÂŁ15 per course per student is charged. GCSE ENGLISH Our GCSE courses require a real level of personal commitment and hard work in order to achieve your qualification. LONGING TO COMPLETE YOUR ENGLISH GCSE LIKE RICHARD? Richard took his English GCSE with Aspire in May 2018, as well as French and Ukulele courses. “As a care worker I was pleased to find a service such as Aspire locally. They offer a wide range of courses at different times so I was able to find something to suit my work times. This gave me the perfect opportunity to (finally!) complete my GCSE English. The achievement I felt after succeeding in this was great. My success I feel was due to the encouragement and support from my tutors and the staff at Aspire. Each lesson had a relaxed and supportive atmosphere where everyone was encouraged to participate. To my surprise I found myself enjoying the learning process. I always left a lesson feeling that I had learnt something valid and that I was progressing. Learning alongside people with the same goals made the lessons fly by, as we all engaged with the subject and helped each other understand what we were studying. I recommend studying at Aspire whether to increase your career prospects or for pleasure.”
ENGLISH AND MATHS GSCE ASSESSMENT SESSIONS These sessions will be held for classes starting in September 2019 and will include information about the course and a written test. The Maths test will be without the use of a calculator. All of these dates have two sessions, the first being 10.30am until 12.30pm and the second being 2.00pm until 4.00pm. If the result of your assessment shows that a GCSE course is not currently appropriate for you, you may be offered a Functional Skills course to help you progress towards GCSE. Assessments take place at our Adult Education Centre in the area stated. If you wish to attend either of these assessments, you must first contact your local centre to book a place. If you can’t attend either of these dates, don’t panic! We will continue to assess individuals up until the start of courses, so please contact your local centre as soon as possible and give them your details. The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. Please check the course information sheet for any other costs that may apply. WHAT WILL I RECEIVE WHEN I ENROL? A receipt, Welcome Handbook, venue map (if requested) and course information will be posted or emailed to you when you enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains terms and conditions and useful information and is also available from any of our administrative centres or on the website. DO I HAVE TO PAY ALL THE FEES AT ONCE? Students must agree to pay the full costs of the course but, for courses longer than 10 weeks and costing more than £100, it is possible that payments can be spread over a fixed period of time by direct debit instalments. Please ask for details. CAN I GET A REFUND? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online, our refund policy meets the requirements of the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Students have the right to cancel their enrolment within fourteen working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a full refund will be made. If the course starts within that fourteen day period, the right to cancel applies up to the day the course starts. Refunds can also be issued outside the fourteen day period if a written request is received more than four weeks before the start of the course. An administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. After that time, only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health will be considered. These refunds will be calculated from the date your request is received by the finance team. Students who wish to join after the course has started will pay the full course fee for the first two weeks. From week three they will pay the course fee pro-rata. CERTIFICATES If you would like a Certificate of Attendance for a non accredited course we charge a fee of £3 to produce and post this to you. WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE CHANGES TO MY COURSE? Although courses usually run as advertised, we reserve the right to change or cancel courses as necessary. If occasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control, alternative dates will be arranged and no refunds granted. We do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutor or venue. If it becomes necessary for us to close or cancel a course, refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. WILL I BE ACCEPTED ON TO ANY COURSE I CHOOSE? We reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment. Students must be 19 years of age or over to enrol. Enrolment on some courses is by assessment only. You will be advised if this applies to your course. WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED EXTRA SUPPORT TO ACCESS A COURSE? Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may find the cost of a course prohibitive. If your financial circumstances mean you cannot afford the fees, please ring 0345 601 0161 or ask for details.

WHAT TYPES OF COURSES ARE THERE AND WHAT WILL I HAVE TO PAY? Government Funding Courses: Some of our courses are subsidised by government funding, these have been marked with a £ in this brochure to indicate concessions are being offered. Community Learning Courses (for your enjoyment or personal development) which are subsidised by government funding can also be eligible for additional concessions. If you are over 65 you will be entitled to a 10% discount on these courses. Students on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 45% discount on tuition fees, on production of proof of benefit entitlement (Contact us for more information) Employability Skills Courses are free to students on low incomes and certain means tested benefits (contact us for more information). English and Maths courses are free if you do not hold a Grade 4 (C) or above at GCSE.
Non-funded Courses: Those courses which do not receive a government subsidy do not have concessions available. These include all Saturday courses and those not marked with a £ in the brochure. COURSES REQUIRING AN ASSESSMENT All students wishing to enrol on a course are required to pay an assessment fee of £15.00 per subject. Should we be unable to offer a place on a course following assessment (no course running at the right level in the local area), the £15.00 assessment fee will be refunded. At Aspire Sussex we try to ensure that finance isn’t a barrier to participating in our Adult Education courses.
