Aspire working to support Syrian Refugees or the last years we have been working with est Sussex County Council to see if we could support a number of refugees from Syria to improve their nglish. The specialist classes that have been put on have been very successful and despite the many difficulties these students had endured as refugees they were all enthusiastic and keen to integrate into a new community. Classes involved learning about the community and how to communicate effectively. Our Tutors who have run the classes have thoroughly en oyed working with the students and were pleased to find out that the nglish they were learning was also filtering down to their children who were also trying to speak nglish in the cr che sessions that are provided. This is ust one example of how Aspire supports people from all backgrounds to learn, en oy and achieve If you are a local employer interested in finding out more about delivering ESOL (or other courses) in house, please contact us for further information.
ESOL students in Crawley have been discussing British Values and have exercised their democratic rights in a practical way by writing to Crawley Borough Council about the lack of a covered bus stop near the college. They received a very comprehensive reply from the Council and an invite to visit the Town Hall from Councillor Peter Smith, which they are hoping to take up soon. In addition some of their issues have been added to a list of proposed improvements by the council.

GCSE ENGLISH GCSE courses require a real level of personal commitment and hard work in order to achieve your qualification at the end. Learners are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and progression outside the classroom through the completion of tasks and activities such as homework and revision. We are proud that our GCSE English learners who sat exams last year achieved results that are 7% higher than the national average.
JULIE BEDFORD I was 40 and had never passed a GCSE in my life. I had a Level Four in Care Management but I had left my career behind when I moved down South. I had two children who were doing GCSEs and my daughter was struggling. When I was her age you ust had to write about nimal arm and Macbeth and 40% was coursework, which was nothing like the new e ams and I hadn’t even heard of the words personification’ or anthropomorphism’. I had no idea how to help her, so I knew I had to help myself to be able to help my children. I enrolled on the English GCSE with Aspire and I loved it, I met some really nice people but I also learned so much. My tutor was fabulous and if I didn’t understand something he would take the time to explain it. We were given the tools to get us through our GCSE. We were given different pieces of work to analyse each week and were set tasks to ease us in to what was e pected. We also had additional classes in the run up to our e am to offer e tra support. Finally, at 41 I had passed a GCSE and I’m now studying for my Maths again with Aspire and once again the help and support is there with extra classes and plenty of past example practice papers. You are treated as an individual not as a whole group and there are plenty of workshops available to assist you in the run up to your exams. Thank you Aspire!!

CHANGE YOUR STORY LIKE CHARLEY At the age of 24 and a single mum to two young children, I finally decided what I wanted to do in life but in order for me to get there I needed GCSEs... which I left school without, then I heard about Aspire. Before my first maths lesson I’m wondered what I’m doing, telling myself I’m going to fail anyway! But straight away I knew I had the best tutor and I started to believe with the help from this brilliant lady I could achieve it. The support we all received, the extra lessons and the dedication from our tutor got me my Level 5 grade, I cried when I realised I had passed! I cannot thank Aspire and my tutor enough for all their support, hard work and dedication. I am now currently doing a level 3 diploma in Travel and Tourism and the future is looking great. I have made friends for life, I have confidence in myself and I am now well on my way to getting where I want to be all because I made that choice to join Aspire.

All courses teach nglish, aths and Communication Skills with a fun and practical setting. These courses are suitable for people who live independently or in supported living units.
Daniel lived with his parents and was too scared to speak in public. He was even too frightened to ask the bus driver for a ticket. Then his mother suggested that he did a course to help with his reading skills and he came to an Aspire class where he didn’t speak at all for six weeks. Daniel was encouraged to talk by an Aspire volunteer supporter in the sessions and she would share his thoughts with the group. Now he speaks to everyone in the building, has joined a club in the evenings and has even given a presentation to his class. For the first time in his life he can go out and about with confidence.

FEES, FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND INFORMATION Our full fee policy can be found on our website or sent to you on request but here is a summary: HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE COURSE AND VENUE? Visit our website at www.aspiresussex.org.uk or ring 0345 601 0161 for information and advice, to request course information and/or venue information. WHAT DO THE COSTS SHOWN IN THE BROCHURE INCLUDE? The costs shown include tuition fees, exam entry fees and some additional costs. Please check the course information sheet for any other costs that may apply. WHAT WILL I RECEIVE WHEN I ENROL? A receipt, Welcome Handbook, venue map (if requested) and course information will be posted or emailed to you when you enrol. The Welcome Handbook contains terms and conditions and useful information and is also available from any of our administrative centres or on the website. DO I HAVE TO PAY ALL THE FEES AT ONCE? Students must agree to pay the full costs of the course but, for courses longer than 10 weeks and costing more than £100, it is possible that payments can be spread over a fixed period of time by direct debit instalments. Please ask for details. CAN I GET A REFUND? As many enrolments are made by phone, post or online, our refund policy meets the requirements of the Consumer Contracts Regulations. Students have the right to cancel their enrolment within fourteen working days of receiving confirmation, in which case a full refund will be made. If the course starts within that fourteen day period, the right to cancel applies up to the day the course starts. Refunds can also be issued outside the fourteen day period if a written request is received more than four weeks before the start of the course. An administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. After that time, only requests for refunds as a result of your ill health will be considered. These refunds will be 62
calculated from the date your request is received by the finance team. This must be supported by a certificate from your doctor and an administrative charge of £12.50 will be deducted from the refund. Cancellation and refund requests must be made by email to enquiries@aspiresussex.org.uk or letter to The Finance Team, Chichester Adult Education Centre, Chichester High School Campus, Kingsham Road, Chichester PO19 8AL. ENROLLING ON A COURSE THAT HAS ALREADY STARTED Students cannot be accepted onto a course until the tutor has agreed. Students who wish to join after the course has started will pay the full course fee if they are joining up to week four. After week four they will pay the course fee pro-rata plus a £12.50 administration charge. CERTIFICATES If you would like a Certificate Of Attendance for a non acreddited course we charge a fee of £3 to produce and post this to you. WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE CHANGES TO MY COURSE? Although courses usually run as advertised, we reserve the right to change or cancel courses as necessary. If occasional sessions have to be postponed due to circumstances beyond our control, alternative dates will be arranged and no refunds granted. We do not grant refunds on the grounds of a change of tutor or venue. If it becomes necessary for us to close or cancel a course, refunds will be made with no administrative fee deducted. WILL I BE ACCEPTED ON TO ANY COURSE I CHOOSE? We reserve the right not to accept an application for enrolment. Students must be 19 years of age or over to enrol. Enrolment on some courses is by assessment only. You will be advised if this applies to your course.

WHAT DO I DO IF I NEED EXTRA SUPPORT TO ACCESS A COURSE? Talk to us about your needs when you enrol or at any stage during the course and we will do our best to help. Learner Support funding may be available to help some students who may find the cost of a course prohibitive. If your financial circumstances mean you cannot afford the fees, please ring 0345 601 0161 or ask for details. WHAT TYPES OF COURSES ARE THERE AND WHAT WILL I HAVE TO PAY? Government Funding Courses: Some of our courses are subsidised by government funding, these have been marked with a C in this brochure to indicate concessions are being offered. Community Learning Courses (for your enjoyment or personal development) which are subsidised by government funding can also be eligible to additional concessions. If you are over 65 you will be entitled to a 10% discount on these courses. Students on a means tested benefit will be entitled to a 40% discount on tuition fees, on production of proof of benefit entitlement (Contact us for more information) Employability Skills Courses have concessions available for people on low incomes and some courses are free to students on certain
means tested benefits (Contact us for more information). English and Maths courses are free if you do not hold a if you do not hold a Grade 4 (C) or above at GCSE. Unfunded Courses: Those courses which do not receive a government subsidy, do not have concessions available. These include all Saturday courses and those not marked with a C in the brochure. COURSES REQUIRING AN ASSESSMENT All students wishing to enrol on a course requiring an assessment will be required to pay a non- returnable assessment fee of £15.00 per subject. Should we be unable to offer a place on a course following assessment (no course running at the right level in the local area), the £15.00 assessment fee will be refunded. If we have a course available but the student chooses not to enrol on it for any reason, we will not refund the fee. At Aspire Sussex we try to ensure that finance isn’t a barrier to participating in our Adult Education courses. If you are unemployed or are looking to gain a qualification, please contact our Student Services team on 0345 601 0161 who will be happy to provide details of the funding support available.
ADDED BENEFITS FOR ASPIRE SUSSEX STUDENTS If you are undertaking a course with Aspire Sussex that is 12 weeks in length or longer (and 10 hours study weekly) you can now purchase an NUS extra card. The card costs £12, is valid for 1 year and is an excellent way to get discounts in shops, restaurants and on a wide range of services. For further information on NUS cards please visit the website.
