ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE TRAIL
ARUNDEL GALLERY TRAIL 2018 Arundel Gallery Trail is now in its 30th year, and has provided a platform for more than 5000 artists showing throughout the town in varied locations. Many of the exhibitions are in Arundel’s beautiful historic homes and gardens not normally open to the public. Follow the yellow and red flags made from WW2 parachute material by ‘Sew don’t throw’ marking each venue. Entry is free, and you can use this brochure and the individual artists pages on the Gallery Trail website to discover more about exhibitors and plan your art journey. Follow, Like and Tweet us through our social media links and please share your memories of The Arundel Gallery Trail 2018. #ArundelArt A film to commemorate this, the longest running walking art trail in the world, has been generously created by and is available to view through the AGT website. Another feature this year is an Audio Trail. Through your phone or tablet you can listen to artists and curators speak about the exhibitions and the artists work practice. BEER CAN COMPETITION Once again the Arundel Gallery Trail is delighted to collaborate with Arundel Brewery. Exhibiting Gallery Trail artists were asked to submit images on the theme of ‘Iconic Arundel’ for the Beer Can Design Competition. The winning photograph by Andy Waite, will appear on the limited edition can, available from the brewery shop (while stocks last!) from late July.

Ann Sutton and Derek Davis would go down to the station each night until the last train had left to ensure the safety of the works. Trains arriving from London would tilt to one side as passengers strained to see the sculptures.
1997 saw sculpture on the Causeway roundabout for the first time, and this was a large 12ft high "Flatman" sculpture by Giles Penny. Large pieces were placed there by Giles Penny for a number of years, including Man Who Caught the Sun in 2003 (pictured). In 2007 there were eleven outside sculpture venues which included Wooden Horse by Oliver Hawkins on the roundabout and Giles Penny showing with Julian Broad inside the Castle grounds. In 2007 Victoria Brown covered trees on the
Ford Road A27 roundabout in bright coloured felt under the title "Wrapped Trees". Since 2010 the Trail organisers Mark and Rebecca Ford have created several memorable installations involving hundreds of children and also large woven sculptures, some hanging from the Castle walls and even in the River Arun! Sometimes the public sculpture might possibly go unnoticed, as in 2007 when Linda Bernard placed a number of painted "Blue Stones" in various sizes around the town.
Once or twice, Trail installations and sculpture have courted controversy. In 1999 award winning land artist Moss Fuller wrapped Arundel's famous trees lining Mill Road. The artist said "I change the landscape briefly, returning it to its original state, leaving an image or experience in the mind". However, not all were impressed and one resident wanted to start a petition to have it removed. In 2008 Stuart Slade installed his "Curious Scuttle Head" on the A27 roundabout; these were large spiders with human faces. They caused such a stir that one driver complained that they gave their children nightmares! 33
