BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

W

elcome to the 2014 edition of your Arun Business Partnership magazine. The past year, and more likely the past few years, have seen some challenges for our local companies and it’s likely that there are plenty still to come. That said, our recent discussions with businesses show that there are some companies that are doing very well indeed both locally, nationally and on the worldwide stage – so it’s not all doom and gloom by any means. The aim of the Partnership is to encourage local companies to be aware of the range, depth and quality of other local businesses and to work with them. Who knows, maybe some of that success can be passed around. We’ve certainly had some great success stories connected with Partnership work over the last year and we’re planning that there will be plenty more of those. You can read all about what’s been happening and is set to happen over the coming months in the Magazine. As ever, let us know what you think. Remember, this is your Partnership, run by local businesses for local businesses so if there are things you’d like us to be doing let us know.

Maximising Your First Contact When meeting new clients for the first time, it’s imperative that you make the best impression possible. Janet Webb has some key advice.

1 Plan your desired outcome. What is it that you want to happen as a result of this first meeting? Be very clear about this as it is going to influence the decisions that you make about how you communicate, when, where and what you communicate and what other things need considering. 2 Stand in their shoes. Clients buy when they are confident that the product or service meets their needs. They will have explicit concerns such as “does this widget do the job?” but also implicit concerns such as “can I trust this

How to ‘B’ good

s there any point in a people carrier if it's a really small one? It's a fair question that supermini-MPV models in the Nissan Note, Citroen C3 Picasso and Vauxhall Meriva segment have often struggled to answer. With Ford's B-MAX, we have at last a credible response to that query, its unique design and unrivalled versatility offering more ways to use a car of just 4m in length than you might ever have thought possible. With the side doors open, you're ready to admire this car's party piece: the absence of the kind of centre B-pillar that almost every other car in the world has to have for structural rigidity. Here, that same stiffness is provided by the edges of the doors themselves when they shut tightly together, clamping themselves against the body. What this ingenuity creates is a car that's incredibly easy for anyone of any age to get in and out of. And get things in and out of. With both side doors open, there's a 1.5m-wide aperture, into which you can slide items

person?” You can help your client feel confident by anticipating what needs they have. If you identify a need and can demonstrate how you satisfy it then you are not just building a relationship but you are making yourself valuable to them. 3 Know their business. Make it your business to have some understanding about their business – the culture, the pressures, what’s new, who their clients are. This will help you build rapport. Rapport comes when two people sense that they have a joint understanding about something. 4 Have some humility. Demonstrate that you are interested in them by asking questions and listening carefully to their answers. Don’t use the first meeting to brag about how clever you are – your client isn’t stupid. They’ll soon work out if you know your stuff or not. Sell

of up to 2.34m in length if you've taken up the option of folding flat the front passenger seat. Of course, most of the time, you'll still be loading stuff like that in through the 318-litre boot, extendable to 1386-litres if you flatten the rear bench.

6 Get the basics right. However, none of the above matters if you use the wrong name, make an assumption about their business that is off the mark, give them shoddy marketing material, turn up late or be rude to the receptionist. It also won’t help your cause if you bad mouth the competition, talk about politics, sex or religion, or make a promise that you can’t keep. And don’t expect anyone to be receptive at 4 o’clock on a Friday afternoon. Janet Webb is a learning and organisational development specialist with skills and experience in Management Development, Personal Development and Customer Service. She has worked in retail, the NHS and in local government, both as a manager and a trainer.

105PS 1.6-litre petrol units at the foot of the range, there's plenty to admire, most notably with the innovative three cylinder 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol powerplants, offered in either 100 or 120PS guises. If you want a diesel, there's a choice of a rather slow 75PS 1.5 TDCi or a 95PS 1.6-litre TDCi engine.

And under the bonnet? Well, if you can get beyond the 90PS 1.4 and auto-only

BUSINESS ADVICE

It is a well-worn cliché that you never get a second chance to make a first impression; well-worn but true. All good clients were once new contacts so it makes sense to try and make that first impression as positive as possible. Here are a few thoughts on how to do just that.

5 Manage your internal dialogue. If you approach your client telling yourself how bad it is going to go, then that’s how it will go; you have rehearsed failure. Walk into the meeting with some positive thoughts in your mind and rehearse for success.

ersonally, I found the Olympics compelling viewing, I admit I am passionate about supporting British athletes, but also I was fascinated by the background stories of how the athletes had achieved their successes. One message from the athletes was that they achieved their successes because of their commitment, the support of their families, plus the training and the coaching they received. This led me to thinking of how we can compare ourselves with athletes. When we set up a business or are in a job role we are there because of our skills. But do we follow the example set by the athletes and embrace continuous personal development or just accept mediocrity? We all need to update existing skills, learn new skills, adapting to new ideas and concepts. Training and coaching are two very

different but crucial aspects of personal development and all successful athletes embrace both to gain maximum advantage in their careers. Training is about giving the individual the skills and knowledge to excel at their work. It may be skill based training for their day to day job or soft skills that help them develop.

So in considering the successes of our athletes at the Olympics remember they train incredibly hard, and receive training and coaching that helps them focus on their real challenges. Is it time for you to consider the sort of training or coaching you need to reach the summit of your ambitions?

Perhaps we should think about continuous personal development and how training can be the catalyst to growing individuals in our businesses and indeed ourselves. Training should not be considered a luxury but an essential element of improving ourselves and our colleagues. The world of business never stands still and therefore we should all consider how we will keep up with technology, new business ideas and learn new skills. This really is not optional but a key to success.

Adrian Moss is Principal of Sandler Sussex Adrian works with ambitious Sussex based organisations to grow their businesses by developing sales and sales management skills. During a 35-year business career Adrian has trained, coached and managed large sales teams, sold into small and large businesses, worked internationally developing new markets and introduced products into Great Britain. Today Adrian focuses his experience in developing talented business executives and sales people to grow their businesses by skill development and coaching.

So how important is coaching? Coaching is not training; it is about helping an individual understand what they need to do to achieve their goals. We all need a coach. Look at our most successful athletes and sports stars; they will tell you how critical their coach is in helping them focus on what they need to do to achieve their personal ambitions. Coaching is about looking forward not backwards. It is not about criticising but about helping an individual to understand what’s possible. Often in life we are criticised for what we have not done. A coach will help you look at your life and career in a way that enables you to see what you can achieve.

Giving effective feedback – BUSINESS CORNER

Giving feedback isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. How should you approach it, and is it always necessary? Janet Webb gives five top tips on giving effective feedback.

BUSINESS SKILLS

one of life’s skills

he art of giving effective feedback is a skill that we are not born with and many never develop. Yet giving good feedback is quite a simple tool that can have enormous benefits. Here are five pointers to help you on your way.

T

1 - Why are you giving feedback? What do you want to happen as a result? One of the most effective questions that we can ask ourselves in any situation is “what is it that I am trying to achieve?” yet we often don’t think about this at all. When going into a meeting, phoning up a client or supplier or booking some time with a colleague, being clear about what we want to happen is essential if we are to make the most of it. This is also true for giving feedback, whether it is to an employee, your friend or your bank manager. Why are you giving this person the feedback? There are many good reasons for doing so – to change their unhelpful behaviour, help them to grow, encourage them to carry on – but you need to be clear about this before you start. If you can’t come up with a good reason, then maybe there isn’t one. Just getting things off your chest is not a good reason for giving feedback and is potentially damaging. 2 – People always behave rationally. Always. Their behaviour makes sense to them at that moment. Just because it doesn’t make sense to you doesn’t change this. You may never know for sure why a person has behaved the way they did. In fact, even if they explain it to you, you still won’t necessarily get it. All we can ever know is what we actually see and hear. So what is the answer? Objectivity – describing only what you can see or hear, not the stuff under the waterline (thoughts, feelings and beliefs) and keeping it factual. To do this well you have to take notice.

THE MAGAZINE 10

Your employee, Bob, is often late for work, which is unhelpful for a variety of reasons. You could tell him that he is slack. However, he may a) not understand what you mean, after all when he gets in he always works hard or b) feel angry that you have been so rude (which you have, by the way.) You might try harder and say that he is often late. Bob may counter with “when am I? I was in early yesterday; you just didn’t see me until later.” This may or may not be true and if you have no facts to hand it is difficult to get back to the feedback. However, if you say “you were late three times last week and four times the week before” then you are on firm ground and Bob has to respond. 3 – Positive feedback is just as important. If you tell people factually what it is that they have done well then they can reproduce it. Saying to a colleague “you’re great to work with” might be nice and encouraging but it is hard to do ‘great’. The chances are the person doesn’t know which bit of their working style you like. However, a statement such as “when there is a problem that you have identified, I like the way that you think of solutions rather than just dumping it on me” is much more powerful and will encourage them to carry on.

something you’ll just have to accept. As stated, getting it off your chest is not a good reason for giving feedback. 5 – What is it that you want? The purpose of feedback is to give people the chance to improve. You do this by letting them know what you want them to stop and what you want them to do (or to carry on doing). Be clear about it. Explain what behaviour you do want. What is it that you want from Bob? • to be on time most days – at least 4 out of 5 • to be in on time every day without fail • to let you know when he gets in • to make up the lost time somehow As for his annoying red shoes? Some things you just have to put up with. Janet Webb is a learning and organisational development specialist with skills and experience in Management Development, Personal Development and Customer Service. She has worked in retail, the NHS and in local government, both as a manager and a trainer. You can call on 07941 921889 or email www.janetwebbconsulting.co.uk to discuss how she could help you with some of the things on your To Do List.

4 – Explain why it is an issue. As well as making a statement about what has happened, explain why it matters and, when appropriate, tell them how you feel. If you explain to Bob that being late causes a problem with scheduling the jobs in the morning and that you feel frustrated having to spend the first half hour of each day trying to find him he is much more likely to do something about it. On the other hand, if it doesn’t actually matter then don’t say anything. If Bob wears red shoes that annoy you, but they don’t stop him doing his job, that is

Highdown Vineyard Highdown Vineyard nestles on the southern slopes of the South Downs. The vineyard was originally planted in 1985 with six varieties of grapes. The vineyard is now owned and run by Paul and Aly Englefield and is an attraction for group wine tasting events. These tours include a visit to the vineyard and a talk on growing vines which is followed by a talk on English wines and an introduction to wine tasting. Paul and Aly bought a range of wines along and judging by the crowds around their table they’ll have increased their customer base already. If you’d like to know more about Highdown Vineyard simply visit www.highdown-vineyard.co.uk Aldingbourne Trust Country Centre As its name suggests Aldingbourne Country Centre is situated at Aldingbourne, just off the A27 making it an easy place to get to. The centre is dedicated to helping local businesses, communities and people with learning disabilities to reach their potential and enjoy life, together. Just a tiny part of their offering is The Acorn Centre which is set up to provide work-related training for

people with learning disabilities. The team bought along jams and pickles made from ‘ugly’ fruit that is rejected by supermarkets but is used by them to great effect. The fact that they sold out of everything is probably the best testimony but if you want to find out more visit their web site at www.aldingbournetrust.co.uk and then visit them! Shake and Bake Bognor Regis company Shake and Bake was started by local man Alex Mills in 2011 and went on to win the Arun Business Partnership, New Business of the Year. An exciting time for the young company. Alex and his team bought their famous milkshake and smoothie combinations along to Tasty to wow those who tried them. Amongst popular favourites was the warm (and yet cold!) ginger cake milk shake which was tried and hailed by many to be a huge success. The fruity smoothies were plentiful and

equally enjoyed. Look out for Shake and Bake and make sure you try at least one smoothie and one milkshake! Pure Chocolate Truffles I’m sure you can imagine that someone with high quality chocolate truffles would be an immediate attraction and you’d be right. Kim Bang-Sorensen was just that man with his range of great looking and tasting chocolates made in Findon. Kim’s truffles come in all types including sugar free, plain or milk chocolate, with or without alcoholic fillings – the choice is yours. Kim and his team’s mission is to get everyone appreciating great quality truffles and he went a long way towards that goal at Tasty. OUR FIRST EVENT of the year now seems to be associated with food, drink or, as far as those attending seem to be concerned, preferably both! This year was no exception and Tasty took place at The Norfolk Arms Hotel in Arundel. A wonderful venue with as much charm as character and plenty of space for our local food and drink suppliers to display their wares and around 100 local business people to network. Here’s a taste of who came along.

30-Year-Old

A growing number of start-up businesses are being run by younger entrepreneurs. Robert Craven explores the reasons. There seems to be a new trend becoming more obvious to me. I have been acting as adviser and consultant to fast-growing independent businesses since the mid 1980s. To date, the ages of the entrepreneurs running the businesses have been pretty evenly distributed with the youngest being around 25 and the oldest at around 75. The average age is usually around 45/50. But now there is a new trend emerging. Looking at the last ten or so clients, I can see that their average age is fractionally under 30. So, what’s going on? 1. It would appear that there are a growing number of start-ups and ownermanaged businesses run by younger people. Running a business is more popular as a career choice.

3. Many appear to be looking to work with advisers who have: a) Been there and done it b) Have some grey hair – have seen a few recessions in their time c) Have experience of rolling their sleeves up and actually growing and running sustainable/respectable businesses d) Have a squeaky-clean reputation. This is not some kind of a mid-life crisis observation, but a statement of fact. Younger businesses are working with us. More than ever before. So, is it really about the age of the entrepreneur? What I am witnessing is all the Es! Energy, enthusiasm, excitement, entertainment, effervescence. Yet these characteristics can come with any ‘youngminded’ age group. Specifically, the people I am talking about are young in years. They have the wonderful combination of energy plus enthusiasm plus the ‘arrogance of youth’ and yet they have little to lose. A startling combination that takes the business to places that the more conservative would fear to tread. Great stuff! This movement, I would argue, has not been wooed by the nonsense that is The Apprentice or Dragons’ Den where making good (ie entertaining) TV is more important than creating good businesses. Where it is fun to have a laugh at the

expense of a naïve or gullible wannabe. The new generation of entrepreneurs are far more canny than that. The irony is that the younger generation are playing a game far cuter than the one being played by the TV execs. The TV execs just don’t realise it! We seem to be witnessing an entire generation of entrepreneurs who have been lucky enough to have been trading in a constantly growing economic environment. Game over, my friends. I do not think we’ll see a time like the Noughties again. Well not exactly like those boom times. Or maybe the adviser/consultant role is just a shiny toy for the younger and more naïve businesses, whereas their more mature counterparts have seen it all before and so don’t bother... However, working with the younger businesses creates terrific results. The businesses are already in growth mode so an injection of insightful critical thinking added to their innate enthusiasm, excitement and passion for their ideas can turbocharge their growth in sales and profits. Maybe I am taking a bunch of random events and trying to see a pattern where, actually, there is none. What I do know is that I am having more conversations with these younger businesses than ever before. Robert Craven shows MDs and owners how to grow their sales and profits and focuses on how to do this in recessionary times. He is a keynote speaker and the author of business best-seller ‘Kick-Start Your Business’ (foreword by Sir Richard Branson). His latest book is “Grow Your Service Firm” www.robertcraven.com/gysf.php . He also runs The Directors’ Centre, helping growing businesses to grow. www.directorscentre.com For further information, contact Robert Craven on 01225 851044 rc@directorscentre.com

Payroll in Real Time (RTI) is mandatory for all employers and was implemented in April 2013. Under RTI, employers or their agents will be required to make regular payroll submissions for each pay period during the year, detailing payments and deductions made from employees each time they are paid.

Whilst the majority of payroll systems are gearing up to ensure that they are able to deal with the new compliance requirements of the RTI system, there are some important changes which will need to be made to the way you process your payroll.

ealth means different things to different people. Literally it is an ‘abundance or profusion of anything’ so for you this could be more money in the bank or it could mean having a nicer car on the drive, a second home for holidays in the sun, or perhaps a lifestyle that would allow you more free time. Whatever version of wealth you decide upon for yourself you will need to increase your income to achieve it. If you earn your income from a regular job then the amount you can earn is limited by the amount of time you can spend at that job. The secret to increasing your wealth is to generate passive income that is not dependent on the time you have available to earn it. Some of the ways of achieving this include earning interest on your savings, increasing the equity in your home and growing capital by taking advantage of good investment opportunities. Unfortunately the usual products we use to achieve this type of income are not performing very well with interest rates often less than inflation, house prices that are not moving and pension funds that are stagnant or, in some cases, decreasing. There are opportunities to increase your wealth, even in the current financial climate, with investment products that offer a very good return on your savings, the chance to increase the equity in your home and the prospect of growing your pension fund by 10% or more each year! The problem most people have is in not knowing where to go or who to talk to for the information they need, from across the whole spectrum of investment opportunities, to make good decisions on their financial future and increase their wealth.

Don’t get fined by the HMRC? As you are no doubt aware, HMRC are in the process of introducing Real Time Information (RTI) into the PAYE system. By October this year, except for in a few limited circumstances, all employers will be required to report to HMRC on or before every occasion that an employee is paid. In addition to this, new laws have also been introduced that require every employer to automatically enrol eligible employees into a workplace pension scheme, for which there are various staging dates over the next four years. Not only is the legislation for these changes complex, but these rules will place major new burdens on employers and consequently it is vital that businesses plan ahead to ensure that they are prepared for the additional employee costs.

tax on those profits. When profits are static, this delay is not an issue, but when profits are rising this can provide a useful cash flow benefit.

In addition to potential tax savings, there are issues to recognise, such as: • The benefits and protection of limited liability. • The tax impact of business motoring costs. • Accounts and returns that must be filed with Companies House.

An accounting date early in the tax year is a benefit for a growing sole trader or partnership business, but current economic conditions mean that some businesses might benefit from a change in accounting date to ensure that lower profits come into charge earlier, reducing tax payments.

If you are at present running your business as a sole trader or in a partnership, it may be worth crunching the numbers to see if there are savings to be made through the incorporation of your business. We would be happy to assist and guide you through this process and provide a free of charge, jargon free initial consultation.

The accounting date of limited company does not affect the interval before tax is due on the profits as corporation tax is always due for payment nine months after the end of the year, except by the very largest companies. However, if your business is very seasonal changing the date may delay the period from when your major profits are earned to the date of payment.

Every year 180,000 people suffer a heart attack. A fire can devastate your business and endanger the life of everyone in it. A heart attack may kill an employee – or the boss – before the paramedics arrive. Our job at IFAST is to minimise the risk to your business from fire and medical emergencies. Fire Safety • How to minimise the risk of fire breaking out in the first place • How and when to use fire extinguishers safely and effectively • How to manage an evacuation First Aid • How to keep someone alive long enough for the paramedics to arrive • CPR and the management of burns • How to treat someone choking We like to think of our training as life-long learning and more than something that the law demands. It should also be what a responsible employer would want to provide for their staff. There are commercial considerations too. Some contracts, particularly when working with the public sector, may depend on your staff training meeting basic legal requirements. The same applies to insurance. New image for one of Worthing’s oldest charities as it reaches 80 years

G

uild Care proudly unveiled its new image in January as the charity embarked on its 80th anniversary year. Local Olympian Tina Cook, the charity’s Patron, attended the launch event at the organisation’s recently extended Guild Care Centre in Worthing. Julia Johnson, Communications Manager for Guild Care said: “Over the past two years we have seen a considerable number of local and national charities rebrand. The refresh of our brand is to clarify our position and to raise awareness of the range of innovative and life-changing care services we provide for older people, younger people with special needs, those with a dementia or a learning difficulty, and their carers. Charities need to be competitive in this difficult economic climate and there is hard evidence that those such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Blind Veterans, to name just two, have seen a sharp increase in awareness and widened their supporter bases since their recent rebrands.”

Warren Creative, a brand design agency based in Worthing, was commissioned to develop the new brand identity for Guild Care. Their Creative Director Stuart Warren said, “Rebranding and delivering a flexible brand architecture is the kind of project we relish as a creative brand agency. We are experienced in transforming brands by applying creative design solutions that connect with customers and deliver a competitive edge for our clients. “Following research, workshops and discussions we found ourselves with a branding conundrum. The challenge was to design a logo for Guild Care that worked on its own merit but at the same time was flexible enough to be ‘personalised’ for each individual service provided by Guild Care. Everyone is delighted with the end result and the positive feedback received.” More on Guild Care can be found at www.guildcare.org

“It’s wonderful to be asked to design all the publicity material for a large arts festival in Portugal but, importantly, we believe in localism and we don’t want to lose sight of local businesses, large or small. These are difficult times and local businesses need all the support they can get, “ says Will Harvey.

The reason clients choose Loosemarbles is that they want unique, tailor-made design solutions – they want to stand out but also they want to be listened to.

“Also, it’s good when one can convince a local business that good design is an important factor to what they offer, be it a business card or their whole working environment. How many times have you sat in a dreadful reception area or foyer: a dried-up cheeseplant, some magazines maybe, bored receptionist, sad landscape on the wall, a water cooler?” Loosemarbles has been asked to

There are some excellent design studios and web companies in the area, but Loosemarbles approaches each project with a completely individual, fresh eye. They take issues of colour, typography, copywriting and design very seriously so that their customers are not just happy initially, but want to work further with them, to grow – they also want to be part of the creative process and are more than happy to help them with this. This scheme is available to all companies of any size and in all sectors in West Sussex and neighbouring counties. If you have a specific project or challenge in your business and can offer a graduate at least 10 weeks full-time work or 20 weeks part-time work paying a minimum salary of £8 per hour, GraduateOn can offer a wage subsidy to you of £1000 (terms and conditions apply). We can help you word the opportunity, if required, and

advertise free through the University’s website and online Job Shop. There is no obligation on you to employ the graduate at the end of the internship period so it’s a great opportunity to “test-drive” a new employee. For the graduate, it’s a chance for them to gain ‘real-life’ work experience and to learn more about the sector in which they are working, giving them that vital first step onto their career path. Many employers have found GraduateOn invaluable in bringing in new talent to develop their business, why don’t you join them? For more information contact our GraduateOn team on 01243 812075, email graduateon@chi.ac.uk or visit or website at www.chi.ac.uk/graduateon

J

Air and Water Centre, an entirely internet based division selling all types of product to improve the environment, of course including humidifiers.

The company has steadily grown over the years by adding different types of humidifiers to the range allowing a continually widening JS customer base in the UK and overseas.

Over the years working closely with our vision of continuous improvement we attained Investors in People (IiP), ISO9001 quality management standard, ISO14001 environmental standard and OHSAS 18001 health and safety standard.

JS started exporting its low energy humidifiers in 1985 to Holland and now covers over 80 countries across the globe; representing 25% of the company’s turnover.

■ Strive to exceed your customers’ expectations in all areas. ■ Your staff are your best asset – always look after them. ■ Increase prices by at least inflation annually. ■ Continually work on your business to make it better, strive for perfection. ■ Enjoy what you do!

One of the company’s best decisions was moving down from London to Rustington with our 30 staff in 1994 which has allowed our turnover to steadily rise to over £9million by 2012 with 65 staff operating from a 25000 sq ft site in Rustington.

In 2011 we became part of the Walter Meier group, which has already helped JS in adding a further £1million to our turnover in 2012. Being part of a global humidification group will give us the opportunity in the future to further expand our local manufacturing base by selling our products throughout the group over the coming years, which is good for the JS team and the local economy.

In 2000 we started our Air Curtain division to reduce heat loss from buildings and in 2002 we started The

many employers want to develop ways of filling vacancies in their businesses.” WorkAid supports employers to be creative in developing new jobs, for example by job carving – a process where some tasks are identified as a new job, thus freeing up more experienced staff to take on new work. Employment and Skills Consultant for West Sussex County Council, Elizabeth Flegg said, “By thinking differently about the way we do things has been challenging for the council, however by being creative, we have become more accessible and this thinking outside the box has been refreshing. Job carving existing roles has enabled us to become more productive and offer paid employment to people with learning disabilities.” Gary Liddell, Head Gardener at Petworth House has benefitted from several work placements through WorkAid and says, “It is so rewarding to see how young people come out of their shell and flourish in the

workplace.” Kevin Buchan – who has a learning disability, and worked at Petworth House said, “Thank you to WorkAid and Gary, for giving me my confidence back!” In 2011 WorkAid was awarded Matrix Accreditation for providing Information, Advice and Guidance. Keith Hunt, Matrix Standard Assessor said, “WorkAid is a professional, caring organisation, which through expertise, dedication and commitment, deliver an essential service to the communities in which it works, without compromise”. Help us raise £4 million! Whilst meeting your own Corporate Social Responsibility! The Aldingbourne Trust is an enterprising charity based in West Sussex which supports adults with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else to live independent lives. Last year we launched our £4million Fundraising Appeal. The funds raised will be put towards the expansion of the Trust’s current facilities, including larger conference facilities, cafe and shop which will help to produce an income so we can become less reliant on government funding and provide additional development opportunities and paid work for adults with learning disabilities. We are always looking for new opportunities, motivated individuals, organisations and corporate partners to offer their support to help us reach our target. By helping us, you will also be helping your own organisation meet your own Corporate Social Responsibility! As a Corporate Partner of the Aldingbourne Trust you would receive a number of unique benefits such as tailor made packages which could

include the use of the conference facilities; corporate team building events with full use of our facilities and training for your staff delivered by Powerful Trainers who all have a learning disability themselves. Match Funding is becoming an increasingly popular way of companies demonstrating their Corporate Social Responsibility with companies often capping the amount at £500 per employee per annum. We have been delighted to receive some really generous donations from individuals and businesses in West Sussex and have had some fantastic support at numerous events. In addition we have many fundraising events planned from a family open day, sponsored cycle rides to a grand charity auction. As are many private individuals. In these tough economic times, the attraction of owning a vehicle has been on the wane for some time and the increasing costs and hassle associated with ownership are

encouraging more businesses and consumers to examine their motoring options. Leasing a brand new car or van, whether for business or pleasure is surprising affordable, and for businesses is a tax-efficient alternative to buying. Driving the latest, safest and most economical vehicles can easily become a reality with today’s leasing packages offering low deposits, low fixed-cost monthly payments plus a host of other benefits such as free road tax and breakdown cover. And, of course driving a new car or van means your vehicle is covered by the full manufacturer’s warranty for the duration of your contract – so if something goes wrong with your car or van, you won’t have to pay for it! Carnoisseur Leasing is part of the UK’s leading independent vehicle leasing specialists, offering customers a comprehensive range of vehicle leasing facilities on all makes and models of brand new cars and vans.

As well as vehicle hire, Ace also provides nationwide courier services for both trade and domestic customers. Page 60

Bognor Regis Regeneration The future continues to look brighter for Bognor Regis. There is plenty of good news to report in Bognor Regis with several significant projects moving forward despite the ongoing difficulties in the national economy. The old LEC factory has now gone and the much awaited Sainsbury’s store, including more than 400 jobs, is now open. This development also secured funding of almost £1m, of which half will be spent directly on improvements to the town centre. The first £250,000 of the Sainsbury’s

funding was allocated to a variety of community-led projects from events to new signage and a community arts centre. The results of this will be visible soon and will make a significant difference. The majority of this money will be spent on improvements to the public realm in the heart of Bognor Regis. Work on a first phase of improvements to the London Road precinct will begin later in the year. The funding will also contribute to a Town Centre Regeneration Officer, for four and a half years, who will coordinate and move forward projects within the retail heart of the town. All partners of the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board are working hard to help make this happen. The groundbreaking Arun Charter Plus launched in 2009 is going from strength

THE MAGAZINE 60

to strength. The Charter was established to generate additional and multiple benefits from the regeneration programme in the town beyond ‘just’ physical development and change. Investors and existing Bognor Regis Regeneration Board partners have both signed up to ensure local companies are encouraged to bid for contracts and supplies, and made commitments to provide training opportunities for local people. Two successful events were held over the past year which saw local firms having the opportunity to meet with representatives of Sainsbury’s contractor Longcross and Butlin’s. We have heard positive stories about how this has resulted in local firms winning work worth many hundreds of thousands of pounds. The new facilities at the University of Chichester campus including the Dome Business Centre and the new Learning and Resource centre have now been open a year. The University report strong

demand for the courses they hold in Bognor Regis despite the introduction of increased student fee levels. We expect the University to go from strength to strength. Butlin’s is booming and investing more in Bognor Regis than any other of its other resorts. The Wave hotel has opened to critical acclaim, including from the Hotel Inspector Alex Polizzi who wrote in the Daily Telegraph how her children preferred Butlin’s in Bognor Regis to the Caribbean. Butlin’s has invested in new fairground attractions and upgraded several parts of their existing accommodation. Occupancy levels continue to outstrip even their own expectations despite the current state of the economy. Enterprise@BognorRegis is a plan looking at the delivery of employment sites covering Oldlands Farm, the Salt Box and the former LEC Airfield on the north eastern fringes of Bognor Regis. Since last year the Council has included the sites in its DRAFT Local Plan, consulted on those specific policies and commissioned planning specialists to put in place a master-plan and Local Development Orders for the sites (this will vastly simplify the planning process for future developers and we hope put Bognor Regis ahead of other competing locations). The delivery of the sites

remains a priority for the Council and regional partners and the Council will be working hard to move development forward. St.Modwen’s proposed developments at the Regis Centre and Hothamton site was the subject of an extensive public consultation in November and December 2012. The results showed a clear consensus that the scheme would benefit the town, although the support for some of the individual elements was not as clear cut, and there was a clear need to improve the car parking in the town. If Full Council decides to accept the recommendations it will be a major step forward towards delivery of this scheme which will include a cinema, theatre, restaurants, hotel, new public spaces and new apartments. The scheme would generate close to 200 jobs. The Economic Regeneration team at Arun District Council will be working on a whole series of smaller scale projects which will see tangible results over the course of the next year. These include: • putting in place all of the signage to allow cycling along Bognor Regis promenade • the opening of the 69 High Street shop unit as a community arts gallery and workshop managed by

Community Arts Bognor Regis • working with the University to establish a business hub and hotdesking space in a vacant shop unit in the town centre • installing new and enhanced directional signage across the town centre • the master planning of the seafront between Butlin’s and the pier • a plan for concessions operating on the seafront from 2015 onwards Anthony Everitt, Arun District Council’s Senior Economic Development Officer, said: “Bognor Regis has seen major investment over recent years at the University, Butlin’s and the Regis School which is great news. However the town centre and seafront has yet to see the levels of investment I am sure the whole population would want. Our priority is to help address this. Over the next year there will be tangible changes as we deliver smaller scale projects, whilst we expect significant progress in moving forward the larger strategic developments that will make the biggest difference.” For further information phone Caroline Gosford on 01903 737854 or email caroline.gosford@arun.gov.uk www.arun.gov.uk Follow Arun District Council on Twitter: @ArunDistrict

Littlehampton Town Centre Regeneration The Challenge At the heart of Littlehampton there is a busy, vibrant and successful town centre. Like many town centres though, it has had an impact from the continued growth of online shopping and out of town retail. There is also a potential effect from the arrival of several superstores (Morrisons in Wick, ASDA in Ferring and the expanded Sainsbury’s in Rustington). Some reports suggest that there will be around 20% less money spent in high street shops and around a third less shops being able to sustainably operate in town centres by the year 2020 (Source: Experian 2012). This would indicate that town centre ‘high streets’ need to adapt to changing circumstance in order for their businesses to continue to be successful. In Littlehampton there are many good

THE MAGAZINE 62

news stories. We continue to see new businesses open up in the High Street, the arrival of Waitrose and the continued success of the Friday market. The town has more places to eat and drink in the retail centre than at any time in recent years. Littlehampton town centre still remains relatively buoyant and continues to attract investment. The fact that Littlehampton town centre has weathered the recession suggests there is room to be optimistic. However, we can not be complacent or take things for granted. We know the current pressures on the town centre and there may be significant challenges in forthcoming years. What we can do about it? It is important we acknowledge the changing trends of how consumers use and what they demand from their town

centre. We need to take appropriate steps to ensure Littlehampton town centre evolves and continues to offer a reason for people to come and spend time and money. Traditional retail may not be as dominant as it once was (but this does not mean it will stop being important). The town centre will need to ensure that it continues to be an attractive place for people to spend their leisure time. Arun District Council is committed to a Leisure Strategy for the benefit of residents, visitors and businesses. The strategy recognises the increasing importance of the leisure and culture offer and the part it can play in the success of Littlehampton town centre and the waterfront. Development on the St Martin’s car park has the potential to put some of these

The high street may be changing, but this in itself presents opportunity. Arun District Council, in partnership with traders and the Town Council, is working to ensure that we are in a position to meet any changes and that opportunities to improve and promote the town centre are fully realised. Small Business of the Year Awards Under 5 employees

BUSINESS AWARDS

Under 10 employees Over 10 employees mall businesses are the backbone of the UK’s commercial activities. Collectively, the country’s small business owners add more than £1billion to the country’s economy every year. The natural by-products of that activity are employment, production of goods, provision of services and the generation of wealth. Of course, there are pros and cons to deciding to go it alone and set up your own business. Owners of such companies tend to work long hours, yet for many the appeal of being your own boss compensates for the added personal and professional commitment. During poor economic conditions, it can be harder still for small businesses. Areas that should remain in sharp focus are training, marketing and innovation. Enthusiastic and committed staff are key to success in any business, and

S

keeping them motivated and providing training will aid their productivity. Training will also help them achieve their ambitions. It’s always tempting to cut marketing budgets during tough times, but it’s vital that customer awareness of your activities is maintained. When the downturn ends, it’s those companies that

We feel it is vital to support small and growing businesses and award ceremonies are a good way of recognising their acheivements and promoting the small business sector. Not only does it identify and reward businesses who excel in their field, it also works to inspire and motivate other small businesses and start ups, which is essential for our local economy. This why we are proud sponsors of the Small Business award.

Here are my five top tips for starting a new business: 1. Do your market research. Prove that you are fulfilling a need in your customers. Do they want what you are offering? 2. Do your competitor research. See who else is doing this and how you can improve on what they do and find out what will make you different.

Winner: Bah Humbug “We are two local people who thought 'why not'. We worked hard on bringing our vision of a new sweet shop to Littlehampton and a year later we opened. The response has been brilliant from our customers, and to top it off Arun Business Partnership rewarded us with the New Business of the Year Award. Our customers are always saying we deserved it but in the early days you do need to be told...for your own sanity! Bringing new small businesses to our town is the way forward in making Littlehampton unique. Hard work will always be rewarded, we are living breathing proof!”

3. Plan your finances carefully. Work out all your costs to start up, the costs for running your business and the amount of sales you are hoping for. Do the numbers work out to show you will make a profit? 4. Write a business plan. This will help you think about and plan for all aspects of your business and will include what you have done in points 13 as well as information on marketing your product or service and what you want to achieve with the business. 5. Get support from a mentor. Research shows that writing a business plan and finding a mentor to support you as you develop your business can really make a difference to you succeeding in your business. obert Craven from the Directors Centre is an entrepreneurship guru who helps companies face the challenges of growth and develop and implement strategies that improve profitability. What’s the Problem? What’s the Hurt? For many of us the problem with marketing is that it just doesn’t seem to be working as well as it could. Typically our clients say things like: • “We don't have a clear view of the future...” • “Our pricing is easily matched/ bettered by our competitors who seem to surpass and outflank us…” • “Too much time and money is spent on sales promotion and we don't know how effective it is...” • “Our so-called ‘innovative’ projects often don't look much different from those of our competitors...” • “A lot is being given away...” What is to be done? 1.Throw away the textbooks.

2. Dig deep to understand why people should bother to buy from you. If you are the same as the competition then there is no reason why they should buy from you… so what makes you different from the rest? 3. Talk to your customers: a. What do they love about you? b. What do they hate? c. What do you need to get more business? 4. Don’t tolerate contented or satisfied customers – they will leave you. Seek to get customers who love what you do – what would ‘raving fans’ look like for your business? 5. Categorise your clients by profitability – 80% of profits come from 20% of your clients (the law of the vital few)… where can you find more clients with the characteristics of the top 20%? What would happen if you sacked, say, the bottom 20

or 30% of your clients? 6. Create a focus on client benefits – tell them what they will get if they buy from you and tell them about the benefits (how will it make them feel happier or better off?). Editorial kindly supplied by Robert Craven

authorities now demand that their suppliers have an EMS and include this requirement when tendering contracts. Gaining external certification for your EMS, such as the internationally recognised ISO 14001 or the British Standard BS 8555 designed for smaller businesses, provides an impartial stamp of approval that your organisation is on the right track. Another high profile endorsement is to apply for an environmental standard, such as that run by the Carbon Trust for energy efficiency. Again a cost is involved, but the external recognition might just win over a deliberating potential customer. Likewise, entering (and winning!) a green award, such as the Arun Business Partnership Green Business of the Year Award, can be a great profile raiser. Ensure you let everyone know of your achievement; contact the local press and publish the story online. Your website is a great tool to keep customers updated with your initiatives. As well as highlighting the environmental benefits of your products

Winner: New Life Paints “It was wonderful to receive this award and demonstrates that we are recognised for our commitment to green trading. Our product enables us to recycle more than 100 tonnes of waste paint per year, awards such as this, help to raise our profile, in turn increasing our sales; the more paint we sell, the more paint we can recycle! o, you've implemented some great environmental initiatives at your business. You've reduced your energy usage, your staff keenly recycle and you're well on the road to becoming the paperless office. But does anyone know of your achievements? Are you using them to win new customers and impress existing ones? There are a number of ways to show off your green credentials, from a certified Environmental Management System (EMS) to creating your own publicity through the local press or your website. What's right for your business depends on the result you are looking for, the customers you are trying to impress and also your budget. An EMS is a framework to help a business assess and manage its environmental impacts. It promotes continuous improvement and is similar in structure to quality management systems common in many organisations. Many larger companies and local

Customer Care Award

I

t is well known throughout the world of commerce that satisfied customers will come back for more, but unhappy customer will never return. Worse still, whereas happy customers will recommend you to a few family and friends, unhappy customers will spread their dissatisfaction to a far wider audience. In this new social media age, with online feedback and ratings becoming ever more important, a bad review or negative feedback could seriously harm your business. Alongside this, it is also well known that it is harder and more expensive to find new customers than to continue serving existing customers, particularly in these tough economic times. An established, loyal customer base can be the key to survival. We can all recognise bad customer service: off-hand or disinterested sales staff, late deliveries, receiving the wrong order, being left on hold when phoning. Good customer service always stands out: polite and friendly staff, clear information, and a prompt and reliable

BUSINESS AWARDS

1. Do your own Search Engine Optimisation SEO isn’t magic. Search engines match sites to search terms by looking for key words and phrases in page titles, headings and in well-written, fluent text. They reward sites for accessibility and download speeds and penalise others for cramming key words. 2. So, create content for your visitors, not for search engines Your content should be for the benefit of your visitors, not for the convenience of search engines. Know your audience, write in a voice that suits them, anticipate their questions and answer them. 3. Keep your content and design fresh Your visitors need a reason to come back to your site. Add new content, update your offering, refresh the site’s look and feel. 4. Every page must have a call to action Make it easy for your visitors. You’ve gained their attention, sparked their interest, so always give them a simple way to take action – get a quote, buy something, call you, share your site etc. 5. Integrate your website with your social media presence Nowadays, a website isn’t always enough. You need to attract attention to your website and brand by blogging, tweeting, on Facebook, etc. 6. Manage your Content Nowadays, Content Management Systems (CMS) are very affordable so it makes sense to use one. CMSs allow you to create and update pages and content online, using simple text editors so you don’t need any knowledge of web programming or see any of the oily parts of your site. 7. Conform to conventions and regulations Your visitors will want to see About Us and Contact Us pages; they’ll assume your header logo takes them to the Home page and they’ll

There was a time when the only browsers you had to consider were IE and Netscape. Now, there’s Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera to consider on the PC alone. There are also new viewing platforms– Playstations, smartphones, tablets, netbooks – all with different browsers and screen sizes. Test your site with the popular browsers. 9. Know why you have a site That might seem like a daft question, but unless you’re clear on the site’s purpose and objectives, how can you judge its success? 10. Get the whole process right There are three key stages in which a visitor interacts with you online. First, you have to make them aware of your site and herd them towards it. Then your visitor has to enjoy the experience and find what they were looking for quickly and efficiently. Finally, you must keep your promises – deliver what they order, answer their questions, fulfil their requirements. Get all three right and earn the ultimate visitor accolade – a bookmark.

isabled people contribute to success. In a small business, there is nowhere to hide. More than half a million disabled workers currently work for successful small businesses. Nine out of 10 SME employers believed that disabled employees are just as productive as nondisabled staff. At DisabledGo we have disabled and non disabled employees and everyone adds value to our organisation bringing personal experience and knowledge. As a business it is crucial that you are employing the most talented people who can help your business grow. There is often a misconception regarding disabled people and employment. There are approximately 3.4 million people with a disability or long-term health condition working in the UK and over 1.3 million disabled people want to join them! So to attract the most talent to your organisation it is important that everyone is seeing your vacancies and feels their application will be welcome. Making reasonable adjustments so that a disabled person can bring their talents to your organisation costs a lot less than most people think. On average

costs are less than £76. Many disabled people work alongside their nondisabled colleagues without any, or with very few, adjustments being made. Any necessary adjustments are usually low cost and many are free. There's help available too from Access to Work which will help pay for equipment, travel and other forms of support. The Access to Work grant is up to 100 per cent of the approved costs for someone who is starting a job with you.

If you don't employ disabled people, your workforce is not reflecting your customer base. One in four people in the UK are either disabled or have a direct link to disability. 5 By having a diverse workforce, which includes disabled people you are better placed to know your customers and therefore achieve success. Wellbeing in the Workplace Award Healthy Workplaces The workplace is a key determinant of people’s health and wellbeing. Poor workplace health can have major costs for individual employees and employers leading to high levels of sickness absence, whilst a healthy workplace can increase productivity making staff more motivated and committed. The figures are compelling: 29.3 million working days were lost overall in 2008-09 due to ill health (that equates to 1.24 days per worker). 24.6 million days were due to work-related ill health and 4.7 million to workplace injury (source: Health and Safety Executive). In the South East alone, there were an estimated 4.9 million working days (full-day equivalent) lost due to workplace injury and work-related ill health. These levels of absence have huge costs to industry and hit small businesses particularly hard. You can use the HSE IllHealth Costs Ready Reckoner to find out what employee ill health is costing your business: www.hse.gov.uk/costs/index.asp It is in everyone’s interests to promote a healthy workplace. Here are a number of key areas employers should consider:

• Workplace health and safety: ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act. • Recruitment policy and sickness absence management: assess the costs of sickness absence in your business, develop a sickness management policy and provide return to work support. • Work-related stress and mental wellbeing: assess work-related stress and take action to address problem areas. • Musculoskeletal disorders (back pain and joint injuries): do risk assessments of work processes and review methods of working. • Stop-smoking support: provide information about local stop-smoking services. • Alcohol and substance misuse policies: provide information and access to support and counselling. • Physical activity: encourage staff to walk or cycle to work and consider negotiating discounted gym memberships. • Healthy eating: provide healthy options in the work canteen.

Above all, employers need to develop a culture of good health to safeguard and promote employee wellbeing. In this way, staff absence can be reduced and staff who are unwell can feel supported to return to work. These are some of the ways in which you can have a positive effect on the local area and its people. Support local charities Businesses can support local charities by enabling staff to donate through payroll giving, or by sponsoring events, matchfunding money raised by staff, giving staff time off to help with projects such as decorating and landscaping, or donating items of furniture or IT equipment. Employee engagement This involves seconding your staff to work as volunteers with local charities and social care organisations. Employee engagement is a great way for your company to share its skills and expertise with others. At the same time, your staff can learn new skills, such as leading teams and project management.

Provide work placements With unemployment rising fast amongst young people, the need for training and work experience opportunities has never been greater. Your company can help by working in partnership with local colleges to provide work placements for young people entering the workforce. Go green Introduce green policies on recycling, responsible energy use, environmentally friendly products and green travel to reduce the impact of your organisation on the environment. For example, you could provide secure bike shelters so staff can cycle to work, or use video conferencing to reduce travel to meetings. You could also encourage the use of Fair Trade products in your company canteen. Promote a healthy workforce Stress is a major cause of time lost from the workplace, so encourage your staff to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Make sure staff have access to information about healthy eating, exercise and other health issues.
