FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING Mixed media group exhibition with work by Derwood Pamphilon, Patricia Ward, Dzemal Gugunava & Jenny Pamphilon.

Figuratively Speaking is like the blossom on a tree; it can take the ordinary and make it sparkle with colour and life.

This exhibition contains images of the human form in photographs, sculptures and painting, created by four Bristol artists, using all their experience in their individual crafts to achieve a transformation from the everyday to the extraordinary.

The commonality that unites us all is the human figure. Intense pleasure is produced by our senses when seeing "a thing of beauty". Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it has been found in the human figure since the dawn of human existence. In today's world, every day we are presented with a narrow view of the body-beautiful, but real beauty generated by artists will always transcend the mood of the times.

In creating these works, the artists have explored their craft to the full, seeking to find beauty in the human form that goes beyond the physical and the stereotypical.

If we look closely at something that is "real" we may see in its depths, something that we cannot easily identify. These artworks may be enjoyed visually but they may invoke a deeper perception, a feeling of pleasure, Figuratively Speaking.

DERWOOD PAMPHILON

I feel privileged to have been in Bristol for over 25 years. The city a wonderfully stimulating environment to work in; it is full of interesting people and has a great variety of cultural events including dance. I love photographing people and movement and this exhibition showcases some of my recent portraits together with shots of the poise and beauty of dance and more 'creative' work. Much of my work is done indoors - in studios and performance venues - but I do get up early on fine days and walk across the Downs, through the streets of the city centre and elsewhere as there is so much to catch the eye and for the camera to record. I use Nikon cameras and do some image retouching and, in the case of more 'creative' images, manipulation in Photoshop. The photographic community in Bristol is thriving through long-established organisations such as the Bristol Photographic Society (BPS) and newer groups on Facebook and other social networks. I am grateful to the many good friends I have made in recent years for their help and support. My work has been successful in BPS competitions, in International Photographic Salons and some images of Italy were previously shown at the Bristol Guild and in Spoleto, Italy.

PATRICIA WARD

Pat was born and has always lived around The Bristol area.

Her mother was a painter and poet so art was a big part of her upbringing and came naturally to her. She trained and worked as a Technical Illustrator upon leaving school and continued to draw and paint in oil, pastel and watercolour and excels in the human form and portraiture. Pat always loved sculpture and a number of years ago attended the sculpture department at the West of England Art Academy in Bristol.

She sculpts figures and heads three dimensionally and relief.

Life experience with her own children and working in teaching in Bristol primary schools led her to focusing mainly on children as a subject, conveying feelings through expression and pose.

DZEMAL GUGUNAVA

Born in Soviet Georgia, Gugun painted his first oil on canvas work when he studied in secondary school. His art teacher was so impressed that she offered him private lessons free of charge to help pass the very difficult entrance exams for the State Academy of Art. Despite the huge number of applicants, Gugun was accepted at his first attempt. He painted his first portrait in 1968 as part of his coursework. It was a portrait of his future wife, a school pupil at that time. He says: 'Portrait painting was always a big passion for me. I believe that it is not me but somebody else who moves my brushes and palette knives when I create my work. I feel that I paint not a sitter but a new person. When the portrait is finished it starts to live its own mysterious life and lives forever, passing through the years.'

JENNY PAMPHILON

Jenny was born during the last year of the Second World War and grew up amongst the bombsites of South London in Blackheath, London. Her grandmother said that she was born holding a pencil but it wasn't until she reached forty that she started to sculpt with clay at an evening class and found that working in three dimensions was much more satisfying.

Jenny attended the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol for several years and now works with a group in a studio at South Bristol. She has worked with different media including clay, plaster, papier-mâchÊ, stone and black wax but this exhibition features mainly terracotta clay and bronze work.

Jenny's sculptures are mainly figures or groups of figures sometimes in boats! Each tells its own story and many are characters from the fifties - boys in 'long' short trousers with pudding basin haircuts and women with turbans or fox furs; many of the sights of her childhood. She has exhibited previously in Bristol and London and loves to discuss her work.
