Music Together

MUSIC COURSES

Music Together recognizes that all children are musical, and that every child needs a stimulating, supportive music environment to achieve basic competence in the wonderful human capacity of music making. Adults and children come together for 45 minutes each week to sing songs, experience rhythm chants, dance and move to music, play instruments, make up silly rhymes for songs and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic musical variety. All of this live music making takes place in a fun, playful, non-performance orientated and age-appropriate setting, with adults and teacher acting as encouraging role models. Classes are led by a registered Music Together teacher. Class meets once a week for 10 weeks.

Music Together Big Kids “Music Together Big Kids” is a 60-minute class geared to the interests and social nature of children ages 5–8 year olds. One parent/caregiver of each child enrolled must attend 2 full classes to provide adult support. The class will use the current semester Music Together song collection and additional materials. For the enrolled child, game songs, folk dances, jam sessions, dramatic play, and more structured work in rhythm and tonality will be included. Formal instruments such as the guitar, various drums, and recorders will be demonstrated. Round singing and holding ostinato pitches will be encouraged. There will be individual singing opportunities for each child. Music Together play-based philosophies with elements of fun, and informal experimentation in singing and movement will be maintained. This class will be an excellent foundation or accompaniment to a dance class. Instructor: Jody Harcourt, Music Together Instructor Location: Dance Studio Note: No class on 1/16, 2/20, 3/2, 5/28. A non-refundable materials fee of $40 which provides 2 CDs, songbook, binder, home play pages and solfeggio cards will be charged in addition to registration fee. Class #

Breaking into the “Biz of Showbiz” Workshop Are you ready for Broadway, L.A., or local theatre? Do you have what it takes to start your portfolio? Acting takes confidence, intelligence, determination, and business sense. Start now before you head to L.A. or N.Y. Students will go through a mock on camera audition.

Available-Light Portrait Workshop Many photographers don’t find an opportunity to learn to “read” a scene’s existing light when looking to create a portrait. Too often, the on-camera flash is employed to illuminate the subject. The genesis of this offering was my own growing passion for the natural available light within the Grand Theatre’s interior space.

January 12 - Susan Richardson will demonstrate creating a Mixed Media creation. Susan is a local artist currently teaching at the Grand Theatre for the Arts. February 16 - A chance to meet Carolyn Lord, this year’s juror for the Expressions Exhibit of Fine Arts, as she discusses the merits of the award winners and why she was enthused, and of some of the pieces in the show that she was interested in, but where there were aspects that needed fine tuning to bring them into the proverbial “winner’s circle”. She will also be available after the program for questions or commentary. March 8 - The Joy of Chinese Brush Painting. Local artist and instructor, Clemmie King, will provide an introduction to the novel tools, philosophy, and process of Chinese Brush painting, including its rich History and relationship to Chinese Calligraphy and Japanese Sumi-E. Chinese Brush painting originated not as an art form, but as a visual language used by Buddhist “teaching” Monks during the advent of Zen Buddhism (Southern Song Dynasty circa 1150AD). It is currently appreciated internationally as an art form. Clemmie will demonstrate the techniques involved in Chinese Brush Painting, Handouts will be provided. April 12 - Local artist, Linda Beckham, will demonstrate painting with watercolors on a gessoed board. She will bring small gessoed boards and paint supplies so everyone can have a hands on experience. May 10 - Meet our 2012 scholarship recipient and view their work. Expressions Exhibit of Fine Art funds the league’s annual scholarship program for high school students pursuing a degree in the arts to achieve their educational goals.
