ON A MISSION TO PROVIDE EACH CHILD WE SERVE IN NEW YORK WITH A SAFE, LOVING FAMILY AND THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO THRIVE IN SCHOOL AND LIFE.
PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends,
President Jess Dannhauser with Portrait of Eliza Hamilton
Thank you for supporting Graham Windham, the nation’s oldest nonprofit, non-sectarian child welfare agency, founded in New York City in 1806 by a group of dedicated forward-looking women, including Isabella Graham and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. Throughout the course of our long and illustrious 210 year history, we have been holding steady to our founding purpose—helping children overcome some of life’s most challenging circumstances and thrive. This doesn’t mean we haven’t evolved, however. Our mission today has been re-engineered to reflect more fundamentally, the importance of loving families and educational achievement in the life of every child we serve, and the importance of community in the lives of every family we support. We have also come to understand that there is sometimes a gap between our best intentions and our actual service outcomes. Thus, we have cultivated a strong, performance-based organizational culture, supported by clear goals, targeted action planning, accurate measurements, and a unique merit-based employee evaluation system that keeps us engaged in a sustained and disciplined effort to get better, so our children and families can get better. Graham Windham has been built to last, and continuously rebuilt to make a substantive and positive difference in the lives of each and every child and family we are privileged to serve. With Graham gratitude,
Jess Dannhauser President and CEO Duke BA ’00, UC Berkeley MSW ‘03

Graham Windham FY2016 Annual Report
OVERVIEW On a mission to provide each child we serve in New York with a safe, loving family and the tools they need to thrive in school and life. Graham Windham is the nation’s oldest, longest serving, non-sectarian child welfare agency. MISSION In full partnership with families and communities, Graham Windham strives to make a life-altering difference with children, youth, and families who are overcoming some of life’s most difficult challenges and obstacles, by helping to build a strong foundation for life: a safe, loving, permanent family and the opportunity and preparation to thrive in school and in the world. HISTORY Founded in 1806 in New York City as the Orphan Asylum Society by Elizabeth Hamilton (widow of Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton), Isabella Graham, Johanna Bethune, and Sarah Hoffman, Graham Windham has pioneered programs for New York City’s disadvantaged children, families, and communities for 210 years.

FY2016 PROGRAMS FOSTER CARE, ADOPTION, AND PREVENTION In FY2016, the 858 children we served in our family foster care branch had been removed from their homes, or had their homes crumble beneath them. Our job is to get them back to their families, or if not possible, adopted into a new family, and if not possible, connected to someone willing to be that anchor and sanctuary no matter what, throughout childhood and deep into adulthood. Graham also operates family strengthening programs in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Our innovative Family Success Initiative provides parenting education, coaching, and individualized support for parents going through hard times.
FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES (FCSS) In FY2016, Graham Windham served 263 children and youth that are currently or formerly in foster care and need intensive support, through an array of highly-targeted interventions under the auspices of our Bridges to Health program. At our mental health clinics, 478 families struggling with mental health issues in FY2016 received services that promote positive behavior and healing. Impacting 2,084 children and adults in FY2016, Graham’s after-school programs at our Beacon sites in the Bronx and Harlem, and Cornerstone Community Center in the underserved area of upper Manhattanville, promote successful adulthoods though academic support, guidance, youth development activities, mentoring, and summer jobs. Our innovative, Graham SLAM program for court-involved youth or those at risk of school failure and incarceration provides longterm, coaching and peer support towards educational and career achievement, serving 185 youths aged 16–24 in FY2016.
