create unforgettable memories The Lappish countryside beckons with its beauty and tranquillity. The white of the snow, the blue of the sky and the dance of the northern lights. The call of untouched wilderness and glistening white snow is loud and unavoidable. YOU FEEL PART OF NATURE There are many good ways of experiencing the Lappish countryside. In order to get the genuine feel you can take a reindeer or husky safari. On a guided safari into the wilderness even the first-timer can safely enjoy the magic of the fells, far from any inhabited areas and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Even for those with experience at traversing the countryside, a wilderness guide is a valuable companion, as the guide has local knowledge and skills that form part of the safety. SOMETHING FAMILIAR, SOMETHING NEW Snowboarding, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoe hiking are familiar activities in Saariselkä, but now there are some new exciting sports such as snowkiting, carting and curling.

Try the thrill of speed at the Action Park Carting track.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS OFFER BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES Although travelling by reindeer is the most traditional form of travel in Lapland, the snowmobile has taken its place in both work and recreation. Northern Lapland has a number of well-maintained and serviced snowmobile routes, marked like roads on the route map. You can take the routes all the way to the Arctic Ocean in Norway or cross Lapland to reach the fells of Sweden.

Lapland

and Sámi culture

The Sámi are the indigenous peoples of Lapland and the northern regions of Europe. Finland is home to approximately 8000 Sámi speaking three different Sámi languages: Northern, Inari and Skolt Sámi. COLOUR AND INTENSITY OF CULTURE Reindeer husbandry is still an essential part of the traditional lives of the Sámi and an important livelihood in the northern regions. The preservation of their own language and culture is a unique resource for the Sámi and the region. The Sámi culture can best be seen in the colourful costumes, skilful handicrafts and utensils. You can explore deeper into the Sámi culture and the countryside of the north at the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre - Siida, in the village of Inari.

Reindeer calves are normally born in May or June.

LEATHER AND BONE USED AS MATERIALS Skilful handicrafts and decorations have their roots in the self sufficient economy and Sámi mythology. Many elegant decorative items were once utensils. The splendid jewellery and costumes have conveyed a message of wealth and often emotion.

Risku is a brooch used by women, the number and size of which told of the family's wealth. Nowadays is a valued gift. (Samekki/Petteri Laiti, Inari)

Inari

is the centre of the Sámi land

The village of Inari is Finland's centre for Sámi culture, the surroundings and nearby villages of which has kept the Sámi folklore alive. SIIDA, the Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre provides an exciting information package on the Sámi way of life and northern nature. LEMMENJOKI GOLD LANDS The gold in Lemmenjoki has been sought well before the national park was founded - and people still dig for gold today. Even today, the area is home to some real gold diggers. In the national park you can enjoy yourselves of the real wilderness nature by river boat trip to the Ravadas falls daily in summer time. SEVETTIJÄRVI - THE SKOLT SÁMI VILLAGE Sevettijärvi is a village with Skolt Sámi inhabitants in the north-eastern corner of Finland, at the "Gateway to the Arctic Ocean", close to the Norwegian border. The Skolt Sámi with its orthodox culture and traditions are very evident in village life. KAAMANEN - VILLAGE OF THE FOUR WINDS Kaamanen is a small and peaceful village of the Inari Sámi that lives off natural livelihoods, tourism and handicrafts. It is a place that anglers and bird watchers have also discovered. KARIGASNIEMI - UTSJOKI - NUORGAM The River Tenojoki connects Karigasniemi, Utsjoki and Nuorgam. The village of Nuorgam right by the Norwegian border, is Finland's and the European Union's northernmost village. The road that winds its way alongside the Tenojoki River offers spectacular views over the Norwegian mountains and Sámi villages on the other side of the river.

The wide expanses of wilderness and unique countryside surround this suburb set in a river valley. It is only about half an hour's drive from Ivalo to the Saariselkä resort or the village of Inari. The River Ivalojoki flowing through the village, is popular with fishermen and boaters, and takes you to the renowned Inarijärvi Lake. Ivalo is a junction point for the large snowmobile trail network, whether you are travelling north, south, east or west. This lively village has also become very popular with foreign tourists as a winter destination. Finland's northernmost international airport, with connections to the world, is located near Ivalo.

The renowned gold regions of the Lemmenjoki and Ivalojoki rivers still have people digging for gold. IVALOJOKI RIVER Ivalojoki is one of the most legendary gold rivers of the north. As early as the 1870s, people travelled to the gold claims along the river that flows into Lake Inarijärvi by boat in the summer and by reindeer in the winter. The largest gold nuggets of the Lappish Gold Rush were found from River Ivalojoki.

natural colours for fresh autumnal days Ruska is the name used for the colourful period of autumn when nature prepares for the coming winter. The green of the leaves disappears and is stored in the stem and roots of plants to use in the following spring. YELLOW, ORANGE AND RED The nature of Lapland dresses for autumn with blazing shades. The array of orange and red shades gently covers the rugged fells. Perhaps this is why autumn is the most popular time for hiking. AIR IS CLEAN AND FRESH The first frozen nights of September purify the air in a way that makes it seem easier to breathe. The bright and fresh autumn days encourage you to be active, go fishing, hunting and berry picking.
