Introduzione
Quando si è lontani da casa si avverte la nostalgia di tutto ciò che abbiamo lasciato. Si dà valore alle piccole cose, alle consuetudini del paese d’origine e affiorano i ricordi. Fin da bambina mio nonno, con le sue tante capacità manuali, mi insegnò il valore del lavoro artigianale. “Tutto ciò che viene fatto dalle mani con passione ha un filo diretto col cuore”. È proprio quel filo che ho cercato e ritrovato nelle realtà artigiane particolari che ancora covano, come brace sotto la cenere, nello splendido scenario della mia terra lariana. In un percorso attraverso vie conosciute, per monti e colline intorno a Como, voglio raccontare dieci storie che parlano di tradizione, di antico, di passione e concretezza. Storie sopravvissute al flusso del tecnicismo e della modernità industriale che dà vita a semplici oggetti. Questi singolari mestieri che hanno saputo preservare il loro patrimonio di conoscenza, pur integrandosi nella modernità, sanno produrre piccoli capolavori, sempre più ricercati. Sono lavori curiosi, legati alle materie prime locali, che rafforzano il senso di appartenenza al territorio e la propria identità. Entrando nei laboratori, ho ritrovato momenti, gesti, luci, atmosfere, di un vissuto che mi appartiene e ho voluto realizzare questo libro per condividere i segreti preziosi del mio paese.

Introduction
When far from home we feel nostalgia for all the things we have left behind. We give importance to the little things, to the customs of our homeland, and memories come flooding in. My grandfather, with his many manual skills, taught me the value of artisan craftsmanship from a very young age. As he once said to me, “Everything that is made by hand and with passion has a direct thread to the heart”. It is this very ‘thread’ that I searched for and found in artisan orientated vocations, that continue to flicker like embers in the ashes, in the breathtaking land of Lario to which I belong. I want to tell of ten different stories that speak of ancient traditions, passion and solidarity, which I discovered during my journey along familiar paths, in the hills and mountains which surround Como. Stories which give life to humble objects that have survived the influx of technology and of industrialisation and modernity. Unique crafts which produce increasingly sought-after masterpieces and have managed to preserve their heritage, whilst integrating into the modern world. Curious works that are dependent on local materials, strengthening the sense of belonging to the region and enhancing its identity. Entering the workshops, I witnessed certain moments, acts, light and atmosphere further strengthening my bond to a heritage to which I belong and I wanted to produce this book in order to share these precious secrets of my homeland.

L’acqua è la prima sostanza con la quale entriamo in contatto nel momento stesso in cui la vita ha inizio. È l’elemento che più si avvicina all’uomo per la sua analogia con la scorrevolezza, quello che crea un ponte, unisce e connette luoghi e persone. È forse dall’amore primordiale per questo fluido che nasce un mestiere affascinante come quello del maestro d’ascia, chiamato in dialetto comasco Sepultùn, colui che costruisce e ripara le barche. “La barca non è soltanto un mezzo di comunicazione che ci porta di qua e di là del lago, ma dev’essere anche un mezzo di piacere dell’andare in acqua, di sentire l’acqua che si appoggia sulla fiancata dello scafo, lo sciacquio...” Con queste semplici ma profonde parole, Daniele Riva racconta il suo amore per le barche, ereditato da suo padre e tramandato per generazioni dai suoi antenati. Nel cantiere più grande a Maslianico si resta affascinati dalla precisione e dedizione con cui vengono prodotti artigianalmente barche e motoscafi e come da un pezzo grezzo di legno il maestro Riva possa vedere già il disegno finale della barca, ricavandone delle forme così belle, pulite e di moderno design. Quando si entra nell’antico cantiere a Laglio è impossibile non essere abbagliati dalla bellezza di questo piccolo mondo di quasi trecento anni di storia, affacciato sul lago, con la sua darsena e il profumo del legno.
Water is the first substance that we come into contact with, from the very instance that life begins. It is the element most connected to man due to its ability to flow and thus creating bridges which unite and connect people and lands. Perhaps it is the primordial love for this ever-flowing and all-connecting fluid that crafts such as that of the master of the axe are born. The craft of building and repairing boats, known in the dialect of Como as ‘Sepultùn’. “A boat is not merely a mode of transport to carry us from one bank of the lake to the other, but also a means to enjoy being in the water. To feel the water resting against the side of the hull, lapping...” With these simple yet evocative words, Daniele Riva tells of his love for boats, inherited from his father and passed down for generations by his ancestors. In the largest dockyard of Maslianico, one is left in awe by the dedication and precision with which handcrafted boats and powerboats are built. It is as though from a rough piece of wood, Maestro Riva can already envisage the final design, sculpting such elegant, clean and modern shapes. When you enter the ancient dockyard in Laglio it is impossible not to be dazzled by the beauty of this small haven, with its characterful boathouse overlooking the lake and a lingering scent of wood in the air.

È un luogo magico, con una luce che inonda gli ambienti anche nelle giornate più cupe, mettendo in risalto i vecchi attrezzi utilizzati dal bisnonno Ernesto, se non addirittura dal trisnonno Giovanni.
It is a magical place, with an atmospheric light which engulf it even on gloomier days, shimmering on old tools once used by great-grandfather Ernesto and most probably by his father before him.
Qui si ritrovano alcune tra le tipiche barche del lago. Lo scheletro dello scafo di un Dinghy, barca a vela in mogano, che Daniele continua a produrre con lo stesso metodo dei suoi avi; una Lucia, una delle più antiche barche del lago, la più famosa e il cui nome ci rimanda alle vicende dei Promessi sposi; un’Inglesina, che deve il suo nome alle barche in legno utilizzate sul Tamigi, importate a inizio Ottocento dai villeggianti inglesi, i quali prediligevano Como come meta del Grand Tour.
On these grounds you can find a number of archetypal lake boats: the hull skeleton of a Dinghy, a mahogany sail-boat that Daniele proudly continues to manufacture in the same fashion as his ancestors. A ‘Lucia’, one of the oldest and most recognised boats of the region, whose name is spoken in the renowned Italian literary masterpiece, ‘Promessi sposi’. An ‘Inglesina’, imported to Como from the River Thames during the 18th Century by English villagers who preferred Como as the ‘Grand Tour’ destination.

Oltre alle barche storiche, agli antichi attrezzi e all’ambiente scenografico, tutti gli altri elementi presenti attraggono l’attenzione. Una porta di molte tinte usata per le prove colore, muri scrostati, mobili segnati dagli anni ci raccontano il valore storico di questo mestiere che nel tempo si è evoluto e adeguato alle necessità del mercato del mondo contemporaneo, pur mantenendosi ancorato alle sue radici, a quel “senso di vero” che è di un lavoro antico. Questa storia affascinante fa parte dell’eredità del maestro Riva e il suo amore per il lago spiega come, unendo artigianato e arte insieme, si arrivi a produrre l’eccellenza.
Besides the historical boats, the antique tools and the scenic ambience, all other elements present on the grounds demand attention. A door used for colour testing and covered in all hues, much like an artist’s palette; peeling walls and items of furniture that are scuffed, scratched and worn by time. These are all details that tell the story of a craft which through time has had to evolve and adapt to the contemporary global market, all the while anchoring itself to its roots and that ‘sense of real’ which belongs to an ancient art.
