Klettersteig

May 16, July 18

Do you think “spelunking” is a derogatory term? If so, let the Wild B.O.A.R. clarify and take you on a 3-hour underground tour at the Bismarck Grotte. The tour at this cavern system begins with rappelling into the mouth of the cave. From there, we’ll use climbing gear to navigate the ups and downs of this “undertaking”. Your underground tour culminates into a 25-foot chimney climb out of the depths of the cave. If you are claustrophobic please be advised: this cave is one of the largest underground cave systems in our area. Some of the passages are tight. Price: $35. Includes transportation and safety equipment.

Looking for a new way to get vertical in your local area? Klettersteiging is similar to rock climbing because it uses much of the same safety equipment. However, rather than climbing up the rock face, you traverse the face on an established route. Klettersteigers are attached by a self-belay system to a steel cable that runs the length of the route. A Klettersteig or “Via Ferrata” in Italian, was originally used by the Italian military as a means of transporting troops and supplies through the Dolomites during WWII. Join us and experience this exhilarating activity. No prior climbing experience is necessary. Price: $35. Includes transportation and safety equipment.

Evening Mountain Bike Rides

Wake Boarding & Water Skiing

Come mountain biking in the Oberpfalz! There are many mountain biking trail options in our local area. Join our rides as we “crank out” rolling hills and flat straightaways, rocks to roots and scenic overviews. The Oberpfalz area is a mountain biker’s haven. Ride lengths vary in duration. Good biking shape is needed to fully enjoy the experience. Price: $10; $15 with bike rental.

Do you have the urge to try some extreme water sports? Join us for wake boarding or water skiing. The park is designed to be used by beginners and advanced wake boarders or water skiers. Cost for a day ticket is €40 which includes water skis and personal floatation device. The park provides wake board rental equipment at an additional cost (€19-29). Price: $38. Includes transportation only to and from the water park.

HUNTING Hunting in Europe and Germany is steeped in customs and traditions. It was originally reserved exclusively for the upper classes and until recently, the last 30 years or so, this has changed. Gun ownership in Germany is a privilege, not a right. Germany has strict guidelines that must be followed to own, store and fire a weapon. One way to possess a firearm is to pass an authorized hunting course the Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting program offers. The Hunting course lasts approximately 10 weeks and meets all the requirements of German law to own a firearm. The course includes blocks of instruction on safety, customs, traditions, shooting, proper weapons handling, laws and all game animals found in Germany.

USAG Bavaria has one hunting area set aside exclusively for U.S Hunters.

The Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting program is a great resource for upcoming hunts. We assist you in finding hunting opportunities in the local area with state authorities and private hunters. Our office assists with the submission for registering firearms as well as contact information for purchasing firearms from private individuals.

On-post Hunting Area

The Hunting Area is utilized by applying in the early spring for a lottery in which the opportunity to purchase one of eleven permits will be raffled off. The permit is valid from May 1 until January 31 for €325. The on-post area is an individual driven program where the maintenance, upkeep and feeding of game is handled by the permit holders with guidance from the Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting program manager. This is a great way to see how German hunters are expected to manage their hunting areas and to experience a once in lifetime opportunity to view and harvest game we would normally not see in America. To enter the lottery you must be in possession of a valid hunting license and assigned to Grafenwoehr/Vilseck area. If your name is one of the first ten you will have five working days to pay the fee or the next person drawn will receive the slot. We are taking lottery applications now, cut off is April10. On April 15, we will hold the briefing meeting and identify lottery winners. A valid German Hunting License is a must to participate in the lottery.

LEISURE TRAVEL - weekend Prague, Czech Republic **

April 24-26, July 31 - August 2

The Golden City just gets better and better. Spared extensive bombing damage in WWII, Prague still has an authentic feel to its wonderful architecture. The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge, and Old Town Square, the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Castle and a wonderful tradition of music-making by “Bohemians” of all stripes. We usually attend an opera in one of Prague’s three opera houses where the performances are inexpensive and subtitled in English. If time permits, your tour guide will also provide an excellent tour of the Franz Kafka Museum and the Alfons Mucha “Slav Epic.” In addition to the cities historical and cultural attributes it has a reputation for quality Czech beer as well! On our return trip we will stop in Pilsen briefly for a meal at a great restaurant for a quick lunch. Price: $290 per adult, $145 per child (5-12); single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includes transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast).

Nuremberg Getaway May 1-3

Nuremberg is really a perfect weekend away from Garmisch: fairly close, still in Bavaria, inexpensive by comparison with many other places and it has lots of varied attractions. What is holding us back? Since the Middle Ages, Nuremberg has been regarded as one of the cities’ most closely tied to a “European Identity”. The city of Nuremberg is famous for many reasons: the famous Kaiserburg castle (the main castle of the Holy Roman Emperor), Richard Wagner chose this city as the scene for his operatic drama “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg”, Adolf Hitler appreciated its historic credentials and made it the home of his greatest propaganda rallies during www.bavaria.armymwr.com

the Third Reich, and the Allies understood that it had become the perfect venue to put Nazi officials on trial at the famous “Nuremberg Trials” following World War II. It has been stated by your tour guide that the Nuremberg Documentation Center is “best museum he knows” on the history of the Nazis. In addition you will have the opportunity to visit the German National Museum, which is best known for the cultural aspects of German History. The list goes on, so join us and discover the many historical and cultural experiences the city of Nuremberg has to offer. Price: $250 per adult, $125 for children (5-12); single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includes transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast).

Venice and Verona, Italy ** May 8-10, July 10-12, September 11-13

In just one short weekend, you will see both Venice and Verona! On Friday afternoon, we drive to Vicenza where we will spend the night. Early Saturday morning, we make the short train trip to Venice where we will see great art and architecture, (Paul’s guided tours of the Academia and the Scuola di San Rocco are renowned), pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, gondolas and more. We will again spend the second night in Vicenza before our trip to Verona on Sunday. In Verona, you have the opportunity to tour the famous setting to Romeo and Juliet with its Roman Arena before dining at a wonderful restaurant. Price: $299 per adult; $145 per child (5-12); Single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includes transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast).

Your guide will also provide an excellent tour of the Franz Kafka Museum as well as the “Slav Epic” by Alfons Mucha – twenty enormous paintings depicting the long march of the Slavic peoples toward nationhood and self-determination. We will tour the original Pilsner Urquell Brewery in – where else? – Pilsen! Since Pilsen is the European Culture Capital for 2015, it is quite possible that there will be other surprises as well!
