March Luncheon reviewed Emeritus Professor Bruce Holloway In his address on the Genetics of Human Behaviour, Professor Holloway touched on the genetic variations which result in all living creatures being different. Changed environmental conditions result in changes to DNA with a changed gene having selective advantage in the process called evolution. The audience learnt of some aspects of genetics and the many types of genes which dictate human behaviour and noted that animals share many genes with us. Professor Holloway gave as an example of gene disorder a rare genetic condition known as the Lesch-Nyham syndrome which affects young children and leads them to self-harming behaviours. There are also genes affecting our interaction with others, e.g the chemical basis of love, resulting in the natural production of genes for biological purposes and to ensure continuation of the species. Another gene is the FOXP2 which is the basis for communication and a disorder within this gene can cause speech abnormalities in humans. Professor Holloway also spoke of the DRD2 gene which is known as a ‘risk-taking’ gene. It is found predominantly in males and associated with compulsive behaviour. It is common in alcoholics and drug addicted humans. Professor Holloway pointed out that in the past this was a very important gene to the human tribe. Tribal members with this gene would have been the ones brave enough to face the prey during the hunt for food. Professor Holloway answered quite a few questions from the audience on various aspects of his address, before wrapping up his presentation. Shirley Ho
