As we look to the future and pause during this inflection point of Phase I, I am reminded of a quote by Teddy Roosevelt: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

It is in this spirit that we look to the future – grateful by the bold action of Fred Alger, strengthened by the commitment of The War Memorial Association’s Board of Directors, and inspired by the daily grittiness, hard-work and enduring resolve of the professional Westaff.are almost there and see you soon.

Dear FriendsWe are almost there! It’s been a transformative time at The War Memorial, and we look forward to sharing our significant progress during the next several months. Phase I of our project, the construction of The Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial, is close to completion with normalized programming commencing by early November 2022. Phase II, the installation of Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge will occur during the early months of 2023 with our formal dedication of the entire campus during Memorial Week 2023. All together we will be a contemporary patriotic, cultural and community impact leader set for a very bright future. You will be inspired by the boldness of the new facility – 25,000 square feet of sweep ing views, a complete restoration of the 1961 crystal ballroom, and a new Colonnade entrance that is welcoming to all people from all places. Designed by ROSSETTI archi tects in Detroit and constructed by Frank Rewold & Sons, this new facility will stand proudly for generations to come, serving as a community symbol of the American Spirit. We couldn’t have imagined or completed this project without the support, patience and vision of the broader community. Lake Shore Drive and the eastside of our region will soon have a wonderfully creative and bold memorial nestled among the historic Alger House and Memorial Church, with even the stone pillars matching in color! We are grate ful for the partnership and support of all those who walked with us on this journey – from our donors, our community tenants, our patrons, the Grosse Pointe Farms City Council, our city manager, city inspectors and staff, our neighbors, the Grosse Pointe Club, and of course, the congregation of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. We are simply grateful.

• All rooms including the loggia and lower-level the ater pre-function spaces have been built out. Drywall, initial painting, and lighting are done.

• All the precast has officially been installed! The colonnade is complete and we’ve added the new terrace off the back of the ballroom. Wood flooring installation is nearly complete and truly stunning!

• The beautiful glass used for this project from Spain is installed. The glass is energy efficient and bird friendly.

Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge is expected to be offi cially and formally dedicated on the grounds of The War Memorial Association, during Memorial Week, May 22-29, 2023. The 50-foot-wide and 25-foot-tall sculpture is the official twin of the original Les Braves in Normandy, France — located in the Vierville-sur-Mer on Omaha Beach. Originally created for the 60th anni versary of the D-Day invasion and sculpted by French artist Anilore Banon, the three stainless steel wings and towers stand proudly as a lasting tribute to the western Allies that landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, during World War II. As a patriotic, cultural and community leader, it is our responsibility and honor to be a place for all people from all places; thus, Les Braves Park II: At Water’s Edge will serve as an enduring symbol that solidifies that belief. Les Braves II and its park grounds will addition ally be inclusive of the Grosse Pointe Garden Center’s Trial and Veterans Gardens providing accessibility pathways for all mobilities, a grand yard that is the focal point for outdoor gatherings, concerts, classes, and finally, a space to just be. Partnership remains vibrant between Art Association and The War Memorial ‘We are here to use art to bring people together’

GPAA began in 1927 when a group of artists organized a juried exhibition at a local club. Soon after, the Association began offering art classes, and by 1942 the American Federation of the Arts listed GPAA in its American Art Annual. “We’ve expanded to support The War Memorial in its goal of being a cultural center,” Pope said. “We are here to use art to bring people together.” Learn more about GPAA by visiting its website at www.grossepointeartcenter.org.

At The War Memorial, we are continually inspired by our friends and resident partners of the Grosse Pointe Artists Association (GPAA) and its extensive art-based opportunities available to community members and programming for veterans. GPAA provides a diverse offering of art classes lead by high caliber instructors, exhibitions to celebrate local artists and inspire new talent, programming to engage and educate the general public and more. The Association, which has about 100 members, has had many homes, with its first being at TWM. After years of moving from one commercial space to another, GPAA returned to TWM six years ago. “We’re very excited because this is very gallery-like and the artists are really thrilled,” GPAA President Karen Pope said in describing the GPAA Gallery at TWM.

Area artist depicts The War Memorial in glass mosaic

Majewski, of St. Clair Shores, depicted TWM in a handmade stained glass mosaic for an art competition crafted by the Grosse Pointe News in 2021. The piece, titled “Grosse Pointe War Memorial,” is 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall. It was accepted into the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center’s 2022 Fine Arts Competition and was on display from June to August. “If I was going to be in your contest, I would choose the most well-known place that I know of in Grosse Pointe and present it as a glass mosaic,” Majewski said, explaining why she chose to depict The War Memorial. She was one of 10 winners in the News’ competition. It took her over 200 hours to create the mosaic piece. “Community is the biggest word,” she commented in response to what TWM means to her. “My sister was married here, I’ve attended weddings, baby showers, everything over the years. It’s home to me.” Majewski’s experience with TWM goes beyond simply attending events over the years. Majewski was part of a Grosse Pointe Youth Council in her early teen years while a student at Grosse Pointe South High School, the council oversaw the Battle of the Bands in the Fries Auditorium at TWM. When the Birmingham Competition was over, Majewski’s goal was for the mosaic to have it come “home” to TWM to be on display permanently, with the generosity of a donor.

The event will include a presentation of thank-you notes handmade by local students, an uplifting service song medley, keynote remarks, and a gourmet breakfast. We are pleased to offer a space for local service-members to experience camaraderie over a meal together. Reservations are required.
