MESSAGE

FROM CHARLES & SUE... As the leaves of fall fade into the anticipation of the holidays to come, Sue and I would like to send you and your family our warmest greetings. This is often the time of year when we reflect and contemplate our personal priorities, when we give thanks for the many blessings in our lives and when we rekindle relationships with our neighbors, friends and families. Sue and I are grateful for each of you, our friends, our community and stakeholders for your continued support of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.

This time of year also brings the promise of a new beginning—and a new beginning is happening here. It’s a new day at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial! Our calling is simple and clear--“To change people’s lives by serving our community through unparalleled experiences.” As we continue to commemorate Grosse Pointe’s rich history, we are also embracing a thoroughly modern approach to transparency and community engagement--and we invite you to get connected through one of our five pillars of excellence: • A Living Memorial - Honoring the legacy of all veterans through meaningful events

and sponsorship programs. • A Hub of Learning and Media - An extensive array of classes as well as educational television programming, offering learning far beyond our walls. • A Center for Community- We are Grosse Pointe’s living room, hosting local nonprofits, arts, culture and social groups. • A Fine and Performing Arts Venue - Home to a resident theatre company, the Grosse Pointe Theatre, we also open our doors to special engagements of local, national and internationally renowned artists. • A Hospitality Space - Offering the most remarkable view for your most memorable events, our premier facility is perfectly suited for all of life’s greatest moments.

The War Memorial is a part of all of us. As a friend and neighbor, you are instrumental in helping us effect the changes necessary for a sustainable organization. Our 2014 Annual Fund Campaign is underway and with your financial contribution, we can continue to support and enhance the community through our transformational classes, programs and special events. It is our hope that when you look at your year-end charitable giving capacity, you consider a gift to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Thank you for your unwavering support, and please accept our very best wishes to you and your family for the happiest of holidays!

A FRESH

Q & A with Charles Burke, President and CEO, Grosse Pointe War Memorial At a cozy cafe nestled between the brick buildings that line Kercheval in one of the bustling town centers of the Grosse Pointe community, we had the chance to sit down and talk with Charles Burke, the new President and CEO of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. The weather was perfect. The sweet aroma of baked goods and roasting coffee beans filled the air on the patio of Morning Glory Coffee and Pastries, where we sat. With honey bees swarming and passers-by pausing briefly to see what we were up to, we rolled the cameras to capture a candid interview for WMTV. We wanted to find out more about Charles as a person and the vision he has for the War Memorial. Below is an excerpt of that interview.

You’ve been a resident of Michigan for more than 15 years now and you recently moved to the Grosse Pointe community. How has that transition been for you and your family? How has the community received you? Grosse Pointe is one of the most special communities in the United States. This is a place that has it all: from the water, to a culture of health and education, a beautiful downtown, and we’re in one of my favorite coffee spots, Morning Glory. My family moved to the Park. My kids are getting acclimated with school and activities. The people of Grosse Pointe have been so welcoming and we love going to the different local shops and restaurants. I didn’t grow up here—I’m from Washington, D.C—but we’ve chosen to stay in Michigan and raise our family here. It’s a very special place. What are some of your best-loved areas of Grosse Pointe? I’m a marathon runner and I often run down Lake Shore Dr. early in the morning. It’s been wonderful to watch the seasons change. When I pass the War Memorial and then come around the bend of Lake Shore where it is open to the water and I see the sunrise…it is something very spiritual. That connection with the water—I think that’s one reason the War Memorial is so unique. It has that accessibility to the lake and it’s a place where the community can come and be a part of that, to be a community together. Could you describe the moment or feeling when you received notice that you were chosen to become the next President and CEO of the War Memorial? It wasn’t this “ah-ha” moment. Actually, where it became real to me was on the other side of this fire place (inside of Morning Glory). It was when I met with the Chairman of the Board, Sue Davies. We were talking between a number of the interviews and she said, “You haven’t seen the building yet. We need to take you into the building.” At that moment I realized that the War Memorial is not the building. It’s part of who we are, but the War Memorial has a heartbeat of people. I met the people. I met the board. I met the community members. I’ve been part of the cultural and educational community of metro Detroit for many years through my work at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and I know there is a tremendous commitment to make this area the best it can be. When we think about the future of the War Memorial, it’s about connecting with the families, connecting with the kids, connecting with the moms and dads and our seniors to improve the quality of life here. To enhance what we know as a very special place. You’re known as a person who introduces innovation, who has a fresh perspective, and you look at institutions and seem to think outside the box. What does a fresh perspective mean to you? A fresh perspective is just saying what’s possible. Imagine what could happen if we did it a different way. Think of the War Memorial as a prism. You hold it up and you can turn it in different ways. Whether it’s being a living memorial or being a center of the community. When you hold it up, the way that light comes through it creates a different light for the community.

ERSPECTIVE

How do you think the team members have responded to your thought processes and things that you have initiated at the War Memorial so far? Well, I don’t think that it’s solely a matter of my ideas and my set of goals. We’ve got a great group of people that are here for the right reasons and who are truly dedicated. I’ll give you an example. We had a water issue recently with the monster rains that have come in. Everybody picked up mops, brooms, in their shoes, out there doing the hard lifting. It was because we believe in what the War Memorial stands for. That’s a spirit. Since I started in March, we’ve talked about the culture that we want to be. We want to be a culture of service and humility with the community. That goes back to having a fresh perspective. We’re here to serve and we’re here to serve other people, not ourselves. Instilling that and living that is really key for us, as an institution, to be successful for the next fifty to one hundred years. Now that you’re the president of the War Memorial, how much time do you have to get back to your passion of conducting and music? I think there’s an assumption that conducting is the “be all, end all.” For me it was a great method of teaching. That and connecting with a group of people. It’s interesting, the concept of conducting, of waving your arms around and thinking that things just magically happen. Conducting is really about being a leader. If you can’t convince people to follow you, you’re not much of a leader; you’re just a person by yourself. That’s a good lesson to always think about things when you’re leading a cultural institution or you’re a leader in a community. Are you with the people? Are you listening to people? Are you conducting a CD or are you actually conducting people? Getting back to my passion, listening to music, it’s funny, when you’re not waving your arms around, you actually start listening even more to music. I was listening to Coltrane the other day. My daughter had some Katy Perry on, “Roar.” So we listen to all kinds of different things. I was just listening to some Penderecki. Getting back in touch with why I got into music. I love to come to places like the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe to experience live music. It’s something that we’re hoping to expand at the War Memorial--having that live music experience. That’s super important. It’s not just about listening, but getting there and seeing the live energy and creativity happen on the spot. It’s a different spirit all together. With our new “Arts @ The Alger” series, we’re going to invest in that and get people to see that, mixing it with great food and great wine so you can have this multi-pronged experience that takes you to a different place. It’s exciting, and we’re conducting in a different way now.

2014

What is your vision for the Grosse Pointe War Memorial and what are you trying to accomplish? The vision of the War Memorial is evolving. First of all, people need to realize we’re here. We’re open. We’re accessible. We’re here for everyone. We’re positive. We’re about families. That’s really key. And when you look at why we exist--we exist to change lives. Change lives in our community by serving our community and being really good at what we do. That’s the over-arching vision. We’re here to serve veterans, to serve the community through learning experiences. We’re a fine and performing arts venue and we’re a beautiful hospitality space. We’re doing all these different things and we’re doing them really well with a sense of service and giving back and engaging with the community. The vision for the War Memorial is dependent on how healthy and how open the Grosse Pointe community is. I chose to come to Grosse Pointe from working in Midtown Detroit and living on the west side. This community is positioned to be the future of all of Michigan quite frankly. I see it in the board. I see it in the community members. I see it when we’re sitting in a place like this. It’s really an exciting time. I can’t wait for what the next decade brings for the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. There are great things in store for us. This Q&A was taken from a live interview conducted by Derrick Benford, a senior at Wayne State University who is currently doing an internship at the War Memorial. To watch the entire conversation, along with two other interviews with Burke, visit www.warmemorial.org.

Grosse Pointe Theatre • Opens November 9th A View from the Bridge. This classic American drama by Arthur Miller, chronicles the life of an Italian American longshoreman who lives in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn. Set in the 1950s near the Brooklyn Bridge, this tense and moving play delves into the corruption surrounding the docks and explores the intricate lives of the legal and illegal immigrants living there. Nothing seems fair and loyalty is often misplaced. This drama has enjoyed many revivals since it first opened on Broadway in October, 1956...most recently in early 2010, starring Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson. TICKET PRICE
