Turkey Grave worries by the WUCT on the situation in Turkey The World Union of Catholic Teachers (WUCT-UMEC) is not in the habit of getting involved in political situations in different parts of the world, but WUCT is much concerned about the situation of teachers and the possibility to exercise their valuable work. The WUCT-UMEC has understood that the Turkish government has taken measures against many teaching staff (professors and students) and governors. These measures are also taken against a great number of judges, government officials, civilians and military personnel, religious, journalists, etc.. The WUCT-UMEC fears, not without reason, that they have been imprisoned, transferred or at least isolated from their families and roots. The failed ‘coup’ of the past days has led to a serious limitation of civil liberties, and shows the dangerous authoritarian tendencies which can endanger normal life and education without limitations. The WUCT-UMEC is very concerned about the events which have taken place; in particular, we feel close to the teachers, who now find themselves in a very difficult situation, and feel threatened in performing their noble teaching profession. The WUCT-UMEC hopes that: - democracy may return very soon and that lasting peace may be established for all Turks, and their democratic institutions. WUCT advocates respect for all, dignity and democratic rights for each individual; -

that freedom of research and education are guaranteed for teachers and academic institutions: it is mandatory that children and students may attend without fear schools which help them to grow and become responsible adults with great respect for civil conscience and a democratic life.

The WUCT-UMEC therefore hopes that democracy is re-established completely, in a climate of freedom, and mutual cooperation and respect. A free and democratic Turkey, rich in human and cultural resources, can thus contribute in a positive way t the development of Europe, Asia and the whole world. TURQUÍA. Lo que sucede plantea graves interrogantes Mas de 20 mil maestros, cientos de dirigentes escolares (otro gran numero de magistrados, de personal del Estado, civiles y militares, religiosos, periodistas) han sido imprevistamente liceciados, encarcelados, trasferidos a otras sedes. Muchas escuelas han sido suprimidas. El fallido "golpe de Estado" de los últimos días en Turquía ha provocado una peligrosa tendencia autoritaria que puede condicionar la vida y la educación. La UMEC esta muy preocupada por los hechos ocurridos; en particular esta cerca de los maestros que están viviendo un periodo de grandes dificultades y que son dificultados en el ejercicio de su profesión educativa. La UMEC espera que: - la vida democrática pueda tornar rápido y dar serenidad a todo el pueblo turco y a sus instituciones democráticas; - que sean respetados los derechos de cada persona, sea garantizada a los maestros y a las instituciones académicas y educativas la libertad de investigación y de enseñanza; - que los niños y jóvenes puedan asistir a las escuelas que los ayudan a madurar y a ejercitar la competencia, la conciencia cívica y el acto democrático. La UMEC desea que sean plenamente valorizados, en un clima de libertad, de cooperación y de recíproco respeto, los grandes recursos humanos y culturales que el pueblo turco posee, por tales motivos Turquía puede, responsablemente, dar una gran contribución a la construcción de la paz, al desarrollo de Asia, de Europa y del mundo entero. TURQUIE Forte inquiétude de l’UMEC concernant la situation en Turquie. L’ Union Mondiale des Enseignants Catholiques) UMEC-WUCT n’a pas l’habitude de se mêler des situations politiques dans les différents pays du monde, mais l’UMEC-WUCT se sent très concernée par la situation des enseignants et de leurs possibilités d’exercer leur profession de valeur. L’UMEC-WUCT apprend que le gouvernement Turc a pris des mesures contre des milliers d’enseignants (professeurs et enseignants) et des chefs d'établissement. Ces mesures sont appliquées aussi à un grand nombre de juges, de personnel de l'Etat, civils et militaires, religieux, journalistes, … L’UMEC-WUCT craint, non sans raison, qu’on en a même emprisonnés, transférés ou isolés de leur famille et de leurs racines. Le «coup d’Etat» échoué de ces derniers jours, a donné lieu à une grave restriction de libertés civiles et a mis en évidence de dangereuses tendances autoritaires qui peuvent affecter sérieusement une vie normale et une éducation sans contrainte. L’UMEC-WUCT est très préoccupée par les événements qui ont eu lieu; en particulier, elle se sent proche des enseignants qui se trouvent maintenant dans une période de grandes difficultés et qui se sentent menacés dans l'exercice de leur noble profession éducative. L’UMEC-WUCT espère que : - la vie démocratique puisse reprendre sans tarder et qu’une paix durable soit établie pour tous les Turcs et leurs institutions démocratiques. L’UMEC préconise le respect pour tous, la dignité et les droits démocratiques pour chaque individu, - la liberté de la recherche et de l'éducation soient garanties aux enseignants et aux institutions académiques et éducatives : il faut, malgré tout, permettre aux enfants et aux jeunes de fréquenter sans crainte les écoles qui les aideront à mûrir et à devenir des adultes responsables avec un grand respect pour une conscience civique et une vie démocratique. L’UMEC-WUCT espère donc que la démocratie sera pleinement rétablie, dans un climat de liberté, de coopération et de respect mutuel. Une Turquie libre et démocratique, riche en ressources humaines et culturelles, pourra de cette façon contribuer positivement au développement de l'Europe, de l’Asie et du monde entier. TURCHIA Grave preoccupazione per ciò che sta accadendo L’Unione Mondiale degli Insegnanti Cattolici (UMEC-WUCT) non ha l’abitudine di coinvolgersi negli avvenimenti politici dei vari Paesi del mondo, ma è attenta alle situazioni in cui si trovano le istituzioni scolastiche, gli insegnanti e alle condizioni di esercizio della professione educativa, una professione di valore. E’ noto a tutti che in questi giorni il governo turco sta mettendo in atto in atto misure di repressione nei confronti di un grande numero di insegnanti e di dirigenti scolastici. Le stesse misure riguardano la magistratura, il personale statale, civile e militare, giornalisti, religiosi e semplici cittadini. L’UMEC-WUCT teme, a ragione, che molti sono stati imprigionati, traferiti o isolati dalle famiglie e dai luoghi di vita. Il fallito "colpo di Stato" degli scorsi giorni ha provocato in Turchia una grave restrizione delle libertà civili e una pericolosa deriva autoritaria che può condizionare la vita e l'educazione. L'UMEC-WUCT è molto preoccupata per gli avvenimenti accaduti; in particolare è vicina agli insegnanti che stanno vivendo un periodo di grande difficoltà e che sono ostacolati nell'esercizio della loro nobile professione educativa. L'UMEC-WUCT spera che: - la vita democratica possa tornare presto e che il popolo turco possa avere una pace duratura e che le sue istituzioni democratiche possano effettivamente funzionare; - sia garantita agli insegnanti e alle istituzioni universitarie e scolastiche la libertà di ricerca e di insegnamento: è necessario che i ragazzi e i giovani possano – senza paure o impedimenti - frequentare scuole che li aiutino a maturare, divenire adulti responsabili e a esercitare competenza, coscienza civica e agire democratico. L’UMEC-WUCT augura, dunque, che la vita democratica sia pienamente ristabilita, in un clima di libertà, di cooperazione e di reciproco rispetto. Una Turchia libera e democratica, ricca di risorse umane e culturali, potrà in tal modo dare il proprio contributo allo sviluppo dell'Europa, dell’Asia e del mondo intero. Il Comitato Esecutivo

Turkije Ernstige zorgen bij de WUCT over de situatie in Turkije De World Union of Catholic Teachers (WUCT-UMEC) bemoeit zich doorgaans niet met de politieke situatie in verschillende delen van de wereld, maar de WUCT is zeer bezorgd over de situatie van docenten en hun mogelijkheden om hun waardevolle werk uit te voeren. De WUCT-UMEC heeft begrepen dat de Turkse regering maatregelen heeft genomen tegen vele docenten (professoren en studenten) en bestuurders. Deze maatregelen zijn ook genomen tegen een grote hoeveelheid rechters, overheidspersoneel, burgers en militairen, religieuzen, journalisten enz... De WUCT-UMEC vreest, niet zonder reden, dat men hen zelfs heeft opgepakt, overgebracht en geïsoleerd van hun families en wortels. De mislukte ‘staatsgreep’ van de afgelopen dagen heeft plaatsgemaakt voor ernstige beperkingen van burgerlijke vrijheden en heeft gevaarlijke autoritaire neigingen getoond die inbreuk maken op een normaal leven en onderwijs zonder beperkingen. De WUCT-UMEC is zeer bezorgd over de zaken die zich hebben voltrokken: en ze voelt zich vooral betrokken op de docenten die zich momenteel bevinden in een periode van grote moeilijkheden en zich bedreigd voelen in het uitoefenen van hun nobele onderwijskundige taak. De WUCT-UMEC hoopt dat: - het democratische leven snel mag terugkeren en dat een blijvende vrede mag worden gerealiseerd voor alle Turken en hun democratische instellingen. De WUCT onderstreept respect voor allen, waardigheid en democratische rechten voor ieder individu; - dat vrijheid van onderzoek en onderwijs worden gegarandeerd aan alle docenten en onderwijskundige instellingen: het is noodzakelijk dat kinderen en jongeren op kunnen groeien tot verantwoordelijke volwassenen met een groot respect voor burgerrechten en democratie. De WUCT-UMEC hoopt daarom dat de democratie volledig wordt hersteld, in een klimaat van vrijheid, samenwerking en onderling respect. Een vrij en democratisch Turkije, rijk in menselijke en culturele bronnen kan zo een positieve bijdrage leveren aan de ontwikkeling van Europa, Azië en de wereld. Het Dagelijks Bestuur
