Transform your mind, change the world.
VIEWBOOK 2023/24
UFV is Íyáqáwtxw, your house of transformation.
It’s your place to grow and evolve, ignite your passion, and cultivate knowledge. A place where learners, leaders, and seekers come to find a world-class education in a vibrant and scenic setting.
We’re here to help you gather what you need.
To go forward.
To change your world for the better.
In the Halq’eméylem language of the Stó:lō people, “Íyáqáwtxw” means “house of transformation.”
Featured on UFV’s institutional coat of arms, this motto reflects the university’s status as a place of change — of intellectual and personal transformation.
As UFV’s Chancellor Emeritus Gwen Point said when unveiling the coat of arms: “UFV is a place of transformation — in both knowledge and character — and this new symbol reflects the inclusion of Indigenous values and concepts, while emphasizing a new path forward together with the UFV community.”
TAKE A TOUR!
You’re invited to visit our campuses
The University of the Fraser Valley is located within the territory of the Stó:lō peoples. The Stó:lō have an intrinsic relationship with what they call S’olh Temexw (Our Sacred Land).
We express our gratitude and respect for the honour of living and working in this territory.
No matter where you’re from, the Fraser Valley feels like home. You will find 15,000 students and all five of our locations in the Valley. The largest campus is in Abbotsford, where you’ll find a central library, bookstore, sports centre, residence building, and a 50,000 sq. ft. student centre. Our Chilliwack campus is home to agriculture, trades, and health sciences, in addition to other academic programs. It sits on 85 acres of land, with a sustainable LEED Gold-certified facility hosting classrooms, labs, a fully equipped dental clinic, nursing stations, a library, bookstore, cafeteria, and more. Well-connected locations in Mission, Clearbrook, and Hope offer academic programs, plus access to student services and continuing education.
The Fraser Valley is an incredible place to live and go to school! We’re surrounded by some of BC’s most stunning scenery: rolling farmland, snow-dusted mountain peaks, glacial lakes, roaring waterfalls, and deep forests.
Our campuses are part of welcoming and diverse communities where there is so much to explore. From farm-to-table dining, trendy shops, and craft breweries to outdoor adventure, concerts, and cultural festivals. The Fraser Valley is also conveniently close to Metro Vancouver, the U.S. border, and the Abbotsford International Airport.
If you want to live in the heart of the action, UFV’s on-campus student housing in Abbotsford, Lá:lem te Baker, offers 203 furnished private bedrooms, along with communal kitchens and spaces to socialize. But wherever you stay, you’ll find all kinds of ways to immerse yourself in campus life. Learn more about student housing and off-campus accommodations at ufv.ca/housing

S’olh Shxwèlí, “Our Place,” is UFV’s Indigenous Student Centre, providing a welcoming space for Indigenous students, and easy-to-access resources. The centre’s goal is to serve as a cultural and academic support, helping bridge the gap between the University and Indigenous peoples, and facilitate the Indigenization of our academy. Its cultural events are open to all students, and include lunches, circle meetings, Elder visits and gatherings, workshops, and welcoming ceremonies, plus other activities on and off campus.
ufv.ca/counselling
University is rewarding, but it can also be challenging. Talking with a supportive and knowledgeable counsellor can help with the difficult parts. Our counsellors are available virtually and in-person to help with personal issues, general support, and career advice — whatever you need.
ufv.ca/accessibility
CAS is UFV’s main contact point for students with disabilities. It offers a wide range of supports, accommodations, and services. Whether you need extra exam time, note-taking support, or assistance with funding applications, CAS can help.
ufv.ca/student-support
This is our hub for helping you navigate the university system, connect to resources and programs, and solve any problems you may be facing. Student support coordinators are here to listen and collaborate with you on reaching your goals.
To see more supports available to UFV students, view the list at: ufv.ca/student-services .
UFV knows how to have a good time! The opportunities to meet new people here are practically endless.
For starters, we have 65-plus clubs and associations on campus, focusing on everything from fitness and table tennis to philosophy and culture. If you don’t see the one you’re looking for, you can create your own through the Student Union Society.
You can also volunteer on campus, take part in a cultural celebration, attend a live concert, and much more.
Student orientation will introduce you to the many opportunities to enhance your university experience and get you ready to start classes. An online orientation is also available.
GO CASCADES, GO!

Paint your face and grab your green gear, because there’s nothing like attending a live game! Come cheer on UFV’s 11 Cascades sports teams as they face down the competition in basketball, baseball, soccer, golf, rowing, and rugby sevens. Our Cascades have had plenty to celebrate lately, with the Women’s Basketball team peaking at no. 7 in the U Sports Top Ten national rankings last year — plus winning Canada West Coach of the Year honours — and several players named to the Canada West all-conference teams.
Are you a competitive athlete yourself? Hit up Cascades tryouts at the start of the year and represent your school on the court or field.

You don’t need to join a team to stay active at UFV. Our Department of Athletics and Campus Recreation hosts intramural volleyball, basketball, spikeball, and futsal games. We even hold friendly Valley Cup competitions against local rival Trinity Western University.
The Summit fitness centre at our Abbotsford campus is a hub for all things active, offering yoga, Zumba, spin, and circuit classes. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to learn new activities like climbing or belly dancing. Drop in to play organized basketball, badminton, pickleball, or futsal — or just use the gym to shoot hoops, play badminton, and more.
A Peak Pass covers gym use, drop-in sports, and classes.
The UFV Study Abroad program allows you to spend a few weeks — or even a semester — at one of more than 70 institutions throughout East and Central Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Gain international work experience by doing a practicum or internship abroad.

In some programs, students have access to research opportunities not normally available at the undergraduate level. This experience can help prepare you for graduate studies.
When it comes to classes, smaller is better! With fewer students in every UFV class, you’ll have more one-on-one time with your instructors — who know your name and support you through every step of your journey.
And while our class sizes may be small, our programs are world-class and wide-ranging, with many opportunities for hands-on and onthe-job learning. We offer more than 100 areas of study, including three master’s degrees, and 20 bachelor’s degrees with majors, minors, and extended minors in more than 35 subject areas, plus five graduate certificates, and more than a dozen trades and technology programs.

At UFV, you’re free to create a schedule that fits your life. Most programs give you the option to study part-time or full-time. Depending on your area of study, you may be able to take classes in the evening or online. If you want to study in the summer, we offer a full semester and two condensed semesters. And if you decide you want to switch programs after your first year, go for it! You’re welcome to try classes across disciplines while you uncover your passion.
How long will your program take to complete? It varies: if you study fulltime, a bachelor’s degree usually takes four years, a diploma two, and a certificate one. But many courses taken as part of one- and two-year programs count toward a higher credential. So you can keep your options open by earning a one-year certificate or a two-year diploma on the way to a full degree.
It takes a full year to prepare for university. Add these important dates to your calendar so you don’t miss out.

CHELAN, LAUREN AND BRAYDEN IN OUR FUTURE STUDENTS OFFICE ARE ALL UFV ALUMNI.
Post-secondary education is a huge investment! We recommend that you build a financing plan for the shortand long-term.
Applying for financial aid and awards can help you save during your time at UFV. Every year, millions of dollars in federal and provincial loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships, and awards go to UFV students through UFV's Financial Aid and Awards office.
Find information about all of your funding options at ufv.ca/money.
You can apply for a student loan through the government or a financial institution. You need to start paying these back six months after you graduate. The amount of funding available to you is dependent on whether you study full-time or part-time and how much income you make.
Grants are government funds you can apply for that you don’t have to pay back. These are sometimes based on financial need, but not always. If you are interested in the trades, there are options that can help you while you study for your Red Seal.
In addition to financial aid, you can apply for a bursary each semester. Bursaries do not need to be repaid if you qualify.
Students who self-identify as Indigenous with the Indigenous Student Centre could be eligible for band funding, grants, various scholarships, and bursaries, and other financial options.
If you’re enrolling at UFV in the academic year immediately following your high school graduation, you may qualify for a UFV entrance scholarship. The application deadline is March 1 (September 1 for trades).
Scholarships are awarded to recipients based on academic excellence, community and school involvement, volunteer experience, and leadership activities. There are millions of dollars available to students who qualify. All you need to do is apply.
Co-operative education
Co-operative education (Co-op) combines academic studies with relevant work experience. Academic semesters alternate with work terms that are four, eight or 12 months long, giving you up to two years of relevant work experience.
The Work-Study program allows you to build your skills while you study with 120 hours of professional employment experience over a single semester in which you are also enrolled in courses. UFV hires many Work-Study students, so you can stay on campus while you earn valuable experience in the workplace.

Sheetal Deo (BA) is now an established lawyer living in the Gold Coast area of Australia, having completed her juris doctor, master of laws, and graduate diploma of legal practice, all at Bond University in Queensland, Australia. Deo is a lawyer by qualification, but she is an advocate by choice.
“So much of my interest in identity politics grew out of experiences I had at UFV. Public conversations I am leading now in Australia are based on a foundation of conversations I had and initiatives I was involved in as a UFV student.”
“I look forward to making our members, our ancestors and future generations proud by progressing Tzeachten through the community’s vision and ensuring to continue to build a healthy community through culture and developing social services.”
“My professor, Dr. Amanda McCormick, has been instrumental in helping me figure out what I want to do. I went from nothing, to being dead-set on a path, to falling off the wagon, and now, here I am on my way to working in academia.”
Kia Neilsen (BA, criminology) experienced first-hand the impact a university professor can have on a student’s academic journey, career direction, and personal development. Now, she’s well on her way to shaping the world as a criminology researcher.
Derek Epp (BSW), whose Xwélmexw name is Weli’leq, is the elected Chief of the Tzeachten First Nation, part of the Ch’iyàqtel Tribe. Derek is using his education to transform his community by working with Xyólheméylh (Fraser Valley Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society).Admission to UFV generally requires BC high school graduation or equivalent. For some programs, students without high school graduation may be admitted as mature students.
Applicants must provide UFV with their high school transcript. BC students should submit authorization for the Ministry of Education to provide UFV with their high school records. Visit the BC Ministry of Education Student Transcripts Services website to submit authorization at studenttranscripts.gov.bc.ca.
Current high school students should provide authorization until September which will allow UFV to collect your interim and final grades.
Most programs require that applicants meet additional entrance requirements beyond UFV’s general admission requirements. These may include academic requirements, such as specific course grades and grade point averages, and supplementary support documents such as references, a written statement, or submission of a portfolio.
English is the language of instruction at UFV. The minimum level of English proficiency for most degree and diploma programs at UFV is a C+ in English Studies 12 or equivalent.
You are considered to have the equivalent of a BC high school diploma if you have graduated from high school in another province. Students in Quebec must have also completed one full year of CEGEP. Out-ofprovince course equivalencies can be found on our website.
High school students may take a course at UFV while still working toward their high school graduation. Refer to the academic calendar for more information at ufv.ca/calendar
Students who complete International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses may earn transfer credit depending on their grades.
Students who have attended other post-secondary institutions may be eligible to receive transfer credit. When applying, ensure you indicate all institutions you have attended, and submit official transcripts
from each one. All final decisions on transferability and transfer credit are made after UFV receives and evaluates all official transcripts.
UFV can help you get the requirements you need. We offer upgrading pathways including adult basic education, English language studies, and qualifying studies. In some cases, applicants may be able to write an assessment to meet academic admission requirements.

“It is my passion to expand the knowledge that I have and apply it where it is needed in Indigenous communities, and I am grateful for the opportunity to further my post-secondary education. I am currently an Indigenous peer mentor. My experiences as a peer mentor have been transformative. I’ve gained experience with leadership roles and enjoy mentoring and taking on the responsibility of being a role model for UFV Indigenous students.”
Cortney Russell, whose ancestral name is Teathquathla, comes from the Haida, Gitxsan, and Stó:lō people. She is working towards a bachelor of arts in Indigenous studies and expanding her knowledge around language revitalization and cultural restoration. Cortney hopes to use this knowledge to help make a difference in her community.
“If I met me in my first year, I wouldn’t even recognize me! I used to feel like I was at UFV for no reason, but then I found my real community and it was an instant click. UFV is unique in that students get to do student research assistantships and conduct academic research as an undergrad. It’s a small community but when you make good connections, they really stick.”
Alicia Dyck (global development studies student) knows that she has come a long way since her first semester at UFV. At first, she didn’t know what to study. Then she met a community of students and professors who transformed her view of the university experience and helped her make a global impact.
