UFV is your university — founded by the Fraser Valley community and for the Fraser Valley community.

CURRENT STUDENTS

UFV has been part of many lives, either directly through quality education, or indirectly through the positive impact UFV grads make in our communities every day.

We measure our success by the success of our graduates, and each year brings new stories that make us proud. None of these stories would be possible if not for you — the great community we serve.

Don’t let anyone else decide your story Linda Todd was given a 5% chance of surviving a life-threatening brain infection. She fought through and beat the odds — but was unable to walk or speak. “It was emotionally devastating,” she says, “but I’m a firm believer in not letting anyone else decide your story.” Linda was determined to recover. “I asked my kids to help teach me how to speak again,” she says, “and I joined as many Toastmasters events as I could. At first, I could only walk from the front door to the sidewalk, but I could go a little farther each day.” Over 33 years earlier, Linda’s plans to attend university were sidelined. As the years passed, it never seemed the right time to go back to school. Fighting her way back to health gave this mother of five and grandmother of two new-found determination. Linda took UFV’s Medical Office Assistant program.

“I was in a class with students the same age as my kids,” she says. “But I loved it. No one in my class ever looked at me like ‘what are you doing here?’” In June 2017, she graduated as one of the top students in her class — and was the student speaker at her convocation ceremony. She was offered a paid position before completing her practicum and plans to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education. Looking ahead, Linda is glad she’s insisted on writing her own story. “This opportunity had been passing me by for 33 years, and I finally grabbed it,” she says. “It’s never too late to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. There is no end line that says ‘it’s over now’; you choose where the line is.”

CHANGING STUDENTS’ LIVES UFV FINANCIAL AID + AWARDS: HELPING STUDENTS REACH THEIR GOALS

As a woman who has always been a little ‘non-traditional.’ I’ve enjoyed succeeding in male-dominated fields. I like to encourage women to think outside the box for career choices as there are so many great jobs in the trades that are frequently overlooked by women. I also try to support the communities that I work in and UFV is a wonderful asset for our community. DIANE DELVES President and CEO Quantum Properties & UFV Scholarship Patron

Long-time supporter of scholarships at UFV, particularly for women in trades. Each year, the Quantum Properties Annual Scholarship for Women in Trades provides $1,000 for a UFV student. Read more at giving.ufv.ca

WHAT OUR GRADUATES ARE SAYING

Resurrecting the Valley’s hop industry “I like producing food that people enjoy,” says Sam Glasgow. “And it’s pretty easy to see people love their beer.” Sam, a 2014 UFV Agriculture grad, is field manager for Abbotsford’s Valley Hops Ltd., which manages fields that provide locally grown and processed hops to local breweries. In the 1940s, B.C.’s hop industry employed nearly 4,000 people through harvest season, but it dried up by the 1990s. However, the demand for hops has drastically increased, thanks to the recent craft beer boom. Sam is one of the local experts helping bring the hop industry back to the Fraser Valley. Sam’s interest in the hop industry began as a student. When he needed a theoretical business plan to complete a course, he considered his own interests. “Like many university students, I liked to drink beer,” he recalls. “So, I developed a 10-acre hop farm plan.” Glasgow’s instructors gave him excellent advice: don’t memorize information that changes. “The most important thing I learned at UFV was to be an autodidact: how to learn, how to search, how to be skeptical, how to keep working to get the answers you need.” After graduating, Sam became a founding board member of the BC Hop Growers Association, a non-profit group supporting hop farmers and bringing industry issues to government attention. This association, along with hop producers throughout BC, is working hard to make the province’s craft brewery industry more local than ever. “We need to make sure our product meets the high standards breweries have come to expect. A lot of people count on hop producers and, at the end of the day, that’s what I’m looking for,” he says.

I love welcoming and helping Indigenous students at UFV. I know many of them, and their families. I’m happy that we are facilitating reconciliation, or reconcili-ACTION as we call it, helping people get past what was holding them back. It’s great to see our people making education a priority, in some cases turning their lives around to do so, and preparing to lead. Introducing the South Asian Studies Institute UFV’s Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies (CICS) began with an idea and a commitment from the community. Now, as it celebrates 10 years, it is extending its focus to embrace regions of South Asia. Centre director Satwinder Bains announced the name change to the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) on May 3. “As we enter our second decade, we felt it was important for our identity to reflect the broader field of South Asian studies,” noted Bains. “This will result in increased opportunities for UFV faculty and students to connect and collaborate with partner institutions and projects throughout South Asia.” The Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies (now SASI) has served as a hub where scholars from UFV programs, Indo-Canadian community members, groups from all sectors of the community, international visitors, students, and scholars from India/South Asia come together.

SASI develops partnerships with other institutions and community groups to provide more diverse experiences for students, faculty, and community members. It also houses the BC Regional Innovation Chair on Canada–India Partnership Development, and maintains a close relationship with the UFV campus in Chandigarh, India. In the past 10 years, the CICS undertook many research projects, created a program of study, supported and mentored student research, and partnered with universities in India. It built strong community partnerships locally and across Canada with numerous Indian diaspora communities, held international conferences, invited visiting scholars from around the world, curated acclaimed exhibits, and developed business ties with India. “I am very much enjoying looking back and reflecting on what we have achieved in our first decade. At the same time, I am also very excited about what the future holds for the South Asian Studies Institute at UFV,” says Bains.

ENRICHING OUR WORLD OUR STUDENTS AROUND THE WORLD + THE WORLD COMING TO THE VALLEY

During my studies here, I was inspired by fellow student Weslet Vildort introducing an effective irrigation system to rural farmers in Haiti, Global Development Studies students developing sustainable urban food systems, the UFV Arab Club collecting thousands of clothing items and toys for Syrian refugees, and Anecia Gill representing girls and women in the Parliament of Canada and advocating for equal political representation. These are not careless millennials. I see hard-working and passionate global citizens concerned about our footprints on the world. Studied in Canada after leaving her home in Ethiopia and living in two other countries on the way. Did an internship with Run for Water and plans to devote herself to helping communities in the developing world.
