BBA DEGREE The BBA program offers a selection of majors and minors designed to fully prepare students to thrive in a wide variety of demanding business environments. MAJORS ACCOUNTING Students in this major not only learn to thoroughly understand accounting, but also to effectively communicate financial information to various audiences. Although many graduates go into accounting, this major provides transferable skills for careers in banking, insurance, and consulting. It also gives students prerequisites necessary for the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) program.

FINANCE Students learn the science of raising cash to invest, investing where there is potential, managing those investments, and estimating their value. This major not only teaches quantifying skills, but also develops creative selling abilities and builds understanding of investors’ behaviour. Graduates are prepared for corporate financial management, the investment industry, and banking.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT By drawing on the principles of multiple diciplines such as business, psychology, and sociology, students learn to identify a myriad of people problems and come up with multiple solutions to strengthen a company. Graduates from this major are exempt from writing the Human Resources Management Association’s National Knowledge Exam, the first step for earning a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation.

MARKETING Marketing graduates work in a variety of fields, including advertising, public relations, marketing research, retail management, professional selling, brand management, and non-profits. UFV offers the only Canadian BBA program that requires students to take a professional selling course and offers upper level courses in B2B selling and sales management— providing a strategic edge over the competition.

MINORS FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Students learn the principles of successful financial management, including valuing securities, quantifying risk, and managing portfolios. Graduates are equiped to manage the assets of domestic, international, and multinational organizations. OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT/MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS Students learn how to make an organization as efficient as possible. This includes budgeting and scheduling, using math and statistics to aid decision making, leveraging data from disparate sources, and adapting to take advantage of new technologies.

ORGANIZATIONAL STUDIES This minor focuses on the human side of organizations, including leadership, gender and diversity, teamwork, culture, and workplace environment. Students learn to enable the people in an organization to produce the best results.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DIPLOMA UFV’s Business Administration diploma helps prepare students to launch a business career, with the flexibility to continue on and complete a BBA degree. This program provides a strong foundation in marketing, accounting, economics, and management, supplemented by a selection of courses in writing, mathematics, and computing.

“UFV really does prepare you to be able to function in the workplace. It allows you to exercise all the abilities that you will need for your career, like teamwork skills and presentation experience.” STACEY IRWIN /// BBA Finance, 1997 Senior Manager of Digital Banking, Prospera Credit Union

CERTIFICATES ACCOUNTING CERTIFICATE Ideal for mid-career professionals looking for advancement or recent graduates wishing to earn an additional credential, this certificate can be a stepping stone toward the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) designation.

“The variety of classes at UFV provided me with a diverse set of skills in my ‘toolbox’ to tackle an assortment of challenges in the real world. In the workforce so far, I’ve had to pull on all the different subject areas I studied, from in-depth forecasting all the way to strategic management.” PHILIP WARE /// BBA, 2013 Program Manager, Thrive Digital

ADMINISTRATION CERTIFICATE Many employers are on the lookout for savvy administrative staff with the skills to enhance business functions. This part-time program provides a solid understanding of the fundamentals of business administration. MARKETING AND SALES CERTIFICATE In a world of immense choice, this program equips marketers to skillfully promote their brand— researching, planning, and positioning products for success among a plethora of competing offerings.

BBA AVIATION With UFV’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Aviation degree, students earn a bachelor’s degree, private pilot license, commercial pilot license, and ratings that enable them to fly multiple types of aircraft. The pilot license earned is in accordance with ICAO standards, meaning graduates can fly domestically and internationally. Throughout the program, students take a combination of flight training, aviation theory, and academic courses. They complete their flight training outside UFV at an approved flight training provider.

While earning their license, students take courses in business and economics—as well as science, English, social science, and the humanities—to prepare for management responsibilities in the aviation industry. Graduates can fly for corporate travel, charter flights, work as flight instructors, medevac pilots, airline couriers, or travel tourism pilots. Eventually, they may fly large jets for major airlines. Graduates may also leverage their BBA Aviation to pursue a career as an airport administrator or operations manager.

Christine Lavery, a UFV Aviation diploma (1998) and BBA Aviation (2004) graduate, is Senior First Officer for a British Airways 787-9 Dreamliner. Her journey has taken her to the Yukon as a flight instructor and bush pilot, Panama and Southern Mexico as a pilot for King Air, Nunavut as a pilot for First Air, and Central America to help a humanitarian effort to eradicate the screw worm fly. “I enjoyed studying what I was passionate about, surrounded by likeminded people—especially my business classes and, surprisingly, economics,” she says. “I appreciated that the professors were professionally involved in the subjects they taught.” “The Aviation courses prepared me for the sheer workload of this field and how to work effectively with my crew. My advice for someone starting out—make good friends during the program, as you will become each other’s best contacts in the future.” After joining British Airways, Christine completed her Masters of Aerospace Organization and Management. She lives with her family in the UK.

CHRISTINE LAVERY /// BBA Aviation, 2004

“I’ll never forget my first day of University,” says KC Aatelma, a 2006 UFV graduate of the BBA Aviation degree. “Walking to my first class, I passed a TV right as the second plane crashed into the World Trade Centre. Some may have been put off of a career flying at that point, but everything I ever wanted was to be an airline pilot.” Today, KC is living that dream as the Captain of an A330 for Air Transat and has flown to cities on every continent. “The BBA in Aviation program definitely prepared me for life after graduation, especially for managing stress and meeting deadlines,” he says. “Apart from receiving excellent flight training from Coastal Pacific Aviation and a strong understanding of business operations, my experience at UFV was the most enjoyable of my life.” Surprisingly for an airline pilot, KC loves to travel on his time off. “My fiancée also works in the airline industry,” he said, “this past fall, we took a quick getaway to Portugal—where I proposed and she said yes!”

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING The UFV School of Business is about more than equipping students to become competent business professionals. It’s about developing innovative leaders who can adapt and thrive in our rapidly changing global environment. With a special focus on practical, real-world learning—such as cooperative education programs, joint projects with local companies, national competitions, and opportunities to study abroad—UFV business students graduate with the hands-on experience and problem-solving mindset needed to become difference makers locally and far beyond.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION The value of industry experience UFV’s cooperative education programs provide students the opportunity to make connections in the industry and get hands-on experience in their future career field. Students can work full or part time for four, eight, or twelve months and count that work toward their academic program. With a wide variety of UFV co-op partners to choose from— such as Black Press, Canada Revenue Agency, KPMG, Ministry of Agriculture, and the RCMP, to name just a few—students can gain experience in the area they are most interested in. Co-op enabled me to apply what I was learning in class and really put all the pieces together. I went into my co-op experience at Golden Valley Foods as an HR Assistant with my mind made up that I wanted to specialize in recruitment and selection. But after getting a taste of the

bigger picture and all the functions in the department, it has showed me that being an HR generalist is what I want to do to bring excitement and variety to my days. If I had one opportunity to tell someone who is thinking about co-op, it would be to definitely do it! It will guide you on the

path you want to do and if the co-op you do isn’t for you, at least it has shown you that ahead of time so that you have the opportunity to figure out what really is your passion. NAVNEET BRAR /// BBA HRM, 2018

I’ve always had this strange fascination with the UK and its history. I wanted to travel and explore but didn’t want to put my schooling on hold. The Study Abroad program was the best of both worlds.

only a couple hours away from London, and a short plane trip away from other destinations of interest. A scholarship, through the Tradewinds program, essentially paid for most of my trip.

I chose the University of South Wales. The perk of living in Europe was that it was

Travelling alone really pushes you out of your comfort zone and equips you with

essential life skills such as communication and independence. But making friends from all over the world was probably the best part. If I could say one thing to those thinking about going, it would be to do it! You won’t regret it! JENIA SIEMENS /// BBA Marketing, 2014

Real-world projects Thanks to the UFV School of Business’ strong community partnerships, students often get the opportunity to work on projects together with local businesses. Recent projects include working with the CEO of the Abbotsford Tulip Festival to market the festival as part of a marketing communications class, and collaborating with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce to promote memberships as part of an advanced selling class. These real-world challenges help students build confidence and see the tangible results of best practices they are learning about in the classroom.

BUSINESS LESSONS FROM TULIPS UFV business students in an integrated marketing communication class got to apply what they were learning in class—and see first-hand the power impact of a carefully planned marketing strategy. Serving as the the print design team for the first Abbotsford Tulip Festival, the students worked directly with the CEO of the festival to attract over 90,000 visitors. They created an integrated marketing communication plan focused on print and social media. This included a variety of print media elements including on-site and directional signage, rack cards, order forms, varietal brochures, stickers, packaging, and banners. Additionally, the team developed the social media visuals, and a content management and scheduling strategy to promote the event.

15

Case competitions Teams from the UFV School of Business compete—and place well— in a variety of competitions such as the CPABC Annual Business Case Competition, CFA Student Research Challenge, Western Canadian Business Competition, and Sauder Entrepreneurship Case Competition. Competing in regional business competitions gives UFV students the opportunity to hone their teamwork and problem solving skills, as well as their ability to think creatively under pressure—valuable tools for their success after graduation.

READY FOR A CHALLENGE? Being a winner looks great on your résumé. At the UFV School of Business, students go for the gold and aren’t afraid to take on a challenge. In 2015, a team of business students travelled to Kelowna to compete against other university students in the Western Canada Business Simulation Competition. The UFV team won first place and several top individual awards, including top VP HR, top CEO, and top VP Marketing. Students prepare for months in advance and form executive teams that take over and improve the performance of a simulated company. “It was a great opportunity to participate in the simulation,” says Jarret Bainbridge, who won the top VP Marketing award. “This has been one of the biggest highlights of my time at UFV. We all worked very hard, on top of our regular courses, but it paid off in the end.”

My teaching style is centered around getting students’ hands dirty—letting them work through problems and examples to discover solutions. I’ll explain the concept and then get them to apply it in class. UFV’s small class sizes are a huge advantage. I get to know my students, and they have more opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification on things they don’t understand, or learn the reasoning behind what we’re doing.

I like to learn about students’ experiences in organizations, because everyone has been part of organizations, and then build on those experiences. I encourage students to not think just about “business” but about all kinds of organizations and groups, because businesses aren’t the only kinds of organizations in society.

I integrate multiple and diverse activities in the classroom, including case discussions, videos and simulations, to ensure that students with diverse learning styles can engage with the material. I highly value my relationship with students and strive to influence them to become knowledgeable and critical business leaders.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT UFV FACULTY I was always appreciative of the small classroom sizes and involvement of my professors. I had a fantastic Human Resources professor who inspired me to make HR my career and took extra time to mentor and guide me” WHITNEY FRIESEN /// BBA Human Resource Management, 2012 Human Resources Coordinator, Smythe LLP

At UFV it feels like you are a part of the lecture, rather than being lectured to. The close-knit atmosphere generates a lot of meaningful discussion and interaction between the students and professors, which is something you don’t always find in a learning environment. WAYNE ORTNER /// BBA Marketing, 2012 Account Executive, FlexiBake ERP Software

I really enjoyed the smaller class sizes and close interactions with professors both in and out of the classroom. They were always available to answer any questions. L AMBERT LUONG /// BBA Accounting, 2014 Senior Accountant, MNP LLP

The atmosphere at UFV was family-like and caring—the perfect environment for learning, social interaction with other students, and face time with professors. JASON SIGURDSON /// BBA Human Resource Management, 2002 General Manager, Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club
