MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR Convocation is a day to recognize and celebrate your achievements. It is also a time of anticipation as you move forward with cautious optimism and courage to meet the many challenges ahead. In the new realities of today’s world — with so many serious issues before us — advanced skills, a wellseasoned education, and critical thinking are more important than ever before.

The entire university turns its focus to its fundamental reason for being. We salute our graduates and their families. We recognize the successes of staff and faculty members in helping students in their varied journeys. We take satisfaction in seeing the results of hard work and accomplishment, and look forward to the positive impact that our new graduates will make on the world around us.

Today, with pride, we celebrate their educational achievements. Tomorrow and in the coming years, here and far abroad, our lives and our communities will be enriched by their leadership and the creative ways they will use their knowledge and skills.

ABOUT OUR CEREMONY, PROGRAM, AND SERVICES Each ceremony takes about two hours to complete. To keep disruptions to a minimum, we ask for students to stay for the entire ceremony and ask their guests to remain seated during the ceremony. Please turn cell phones to vibrate.

PHOTOGRAPHY Each graduate will have two photos taken of them

by Artona Photography: one as they shake the hand of the President, and one as they exit the stage. After the ceremony, family members and friends will have the opportunity to take photos of graduates at the venue. Since professional photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to remain in their seats, relax and enjoy the ceremony.

RECEPTION Immediately following the ceremony, all guests are invited to join graduates, faculty and staff at an informal reception on the concourse at the Abbotsford Centre. Light refreshments will be served.

REGALIA (GOWNS) Graduating students and faculty are reminded to return their gowns following the ceremony and reception.

STUDENT RECOGNITION — WHAT THE SYMBOLS MEAN Dean’s List of Distinguished Students ( * ) The Deans’ List recognizes those university students who have maintained a high academic standard throughout their course of studies. To be eligible for the Deans’ List, a student must: (a) have successfully completed at least fifteen credits in a semester with a semester grade point average of at least 3.5; or (b) have a documented permanent disability, which affects his/her ability to participate in full-time studies and have successfully completed at least nine credits in a semester with a semester grade point average of at least 3.5; or (c) have completed all the program graduation requirements with a grade point average of at least 3.5 based on the credits earned while in the program or the previous five years, whichever is shorter, with a semester GPA of at least 3.0 in the most recent semester in which at least one graded course was completed; or (d) be in an entry-level Trades program and have an average of 90% or higher in all courses.

Recognition of Outstanding Achievement ( + ) This list is made up of a few students in each department in recognition of both academic excellence and outstanding performance in their program.

UFV + You Growing innovation locally and beyond AS WE CELEBRATE OUR 40 TH ANNIVERSARY, WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR HISTORY AND LOOK TO THE FUTURE.

In 1974, after years of active campaigning by Fraser Valley citizens, Fraser Valley College (FVC) was established in Chilliwack and Abbotsford, with smaller centres in Mission, Hope, and Agassiz. In the early years, students gathered in church basements, local schools, and storefronts. The first buildings dedicated to FVC use opened at Marshall Road in Abbotsford and Yale Road in Chilliwack in the mid-1970s. The first permanent campus opened in 1983 on King Road in Abbotsford.

1991 FVC became the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) in 1991, following another tremendous round of community support, and launched its first four-year bachelor’s degree programs in September 1992. More degrees were launched each year for several years. New facilities opened in Chilliwack in 1995 and in Mission tin 1996 (as part of the Heritage Park Centre).

2012 The new Chiliwack campus at Canada Education Park opened for classes in September 2012, joining the state-ofthe-art Trades and Technology Centre on Tyson Road. On April 4, 2014 we opened UFV’s newest facility: the Agriculture Centre of Excellence.

In April 2008, the provincial government announced university status for UFV, following years of active lobbying by the communities of the Fraser Valley. The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) began operations under its new name on September 1, 2008.

In 2014, the university offers more than 100 programs, including two master’s degrees, 15 bachelor’s degrees, majors, minors, and extended minors, diplomas and certificates in more than 30 subject areas, and more than a dozen trades and technology programs.

STÓ:LŌ TERRITORY UFV strives to be a place of learning that recognizes respects and includes indigenous ways of knowing. Our Fraser Valley campus locations are in the traditional territory of the Stó:lō Nations: people of the river.

THE TALKING STICK The Talking Stick is a gift from the Stó:lō people to UFV, honouring all aboriginal people. The Talking Stick and aboriginal drummers lead the academic procession into Convocation and the recession after the ceremony.

The figures on the Talking Stick being used at UFV’s Convocation are a wolf and a thunderbird. The wolf is symbolic of “the teacher” in Stó:lō territory while the thunderbird represents the highest level of knowledge.

Most universities in the Commonwealth have a ceremonial mace, which accompanies the convocation ceremonies.

It is the staff of office, representing official authority (such as the Speaker of the House of Commons).

UFV uses the Talking Stick rather than a mace for this purpose, thus bringing together a partnership between aboriginal and university traditions.

OUR TRADITIONS

ACADEMIC DRESS Traditional academic regalia consists of a gown, hood, and a mortarboard or cap and tassel. The wearing of robes became common in the middle ages. In monasteries and universities of the time, scholars wore the same long closed gowns as other medieval men. By the time the University of Cambridge was founded in the early thirteenth century, doctors in law and music were permitted to wear gowns in scarlet, purple, and red. Over time, garments and colours came to identify their university. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or the colours of the city in which the university was located.

At UFV, regalia uses the university’s rich green colours. There are vee-stoles for diploma and certificate graduates, while bachelor program graduates wear degree hoods. The coloured binding on the edge of the degree hoods represents the faculty from which a student is graduating.

MATTHEW DIRKS

Bachelor of Arts in Global Development Studies, Minor in Sociology and Business

VALUABLE LESSONS AT HOME AND ABROAD Living and breathing his studies, Matt Dirks embraced all UFV had to offer.

The credits he accumulated aligned well with the newly introduced Bachelor of Global Development Studies curriculum, meaning he is one of the first graduates of this brand new degree program not long after its launch. Combining his studies with stints as a peer mentor and several international experiences made for a well-rounded university life.

He studied in England, interned in Tanzania, and participated in a United Nations seminar in New York — exemplifying the global and local citizenship values central to the Bachelor of GDS program.

Despite an impressive 3.89 GPA, Dirks says university isn’t all about great grades.

“It’s really important to have balance in life,” he says.

Though he enjoyed his many travels, Dirks didn’t go far to find his favourite experiences, thanks in large part to small classes and personal, attentive instructors.

“The best thing I did was getting involved on campus and in clubs. Meeting people and being a part of all the great things here really helped make UFV my home.”

VALERIE WAUGHTAL Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education

A SHINING EXAMPLE OF LIFELONG LEARNING A mature student returning to university to earn a BA in Adult Education degree, Valerie Waughtal is a shining example of the power of lifelong learning.

As a college instructor for the past 25 years, she integrated insights from her studies at UFV to support the indigenization of curriculum back home in Prince George, where she teaches a community and school support program. (Indigenization is the practice of integrating Aboriginal knowledge and perspective into the curriculum.)

While taking most courses online, she made the extra effort to meet with teachers and classmates.

Flexible and creative, Valerie impressed at every turn — culminating in a 4.09 GPA and UFV’s Adult Education Institutional/Community Leadership award, acknowledging significant contributions to learning, self-reflection, cooperative engagement, and social responsibility.

Though nearing retirement, Valerie is extremely pleased with her decision to pursue higher education later in life, and encourages others to do the same.

“That first semester is a steep learning curve, and it can be a bit intimidating,” she says.

MEGAN FROESE Diploma in Agriculture Technology

REAPING RICH REWARDS WITH AGRICULTURE TECHNOLOGY Bright, energetic, and committed to putting food on the plates of future generations, Megan Froese is the quintessential modern farmer.

After growing up on a small Saskatchewan cattle farm, she targeted UFV’s Agriculture Technology program for its diversity, embracing both horticulture and livestock studies.

Keen to expand her horizons in high-yield fields, Megan dedicated herself to her studies but still took time to showcase leadership by teaching others — with good, clean humour thrown in for solid measure.

A true steward of the land, Megan made the most of her time in the Fraser Valley, which she found equally rich in outdoor adventures and lush crops. Whether it was hiking Mt. Cheam or gently coaxing greenhouse seedlings, she reaped rewards at every turn.

Her advice to fellow students is simple.

“Just sit down, be yourself, and start a conversation,” she says.

“Good things will follow.”

“But UFV has a lot of resources, including the wonderful instructors.”

“The trick is just to jump in and do it.”

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARD

This annual award is in recognition of the importance of research to UFV, and it students.

DR. MICHAEL GAETZ Kinesiology and Physical Education

A CREATIVE APPROACH TO RESEARCH

There are many opportunities to do scientific research focused on keeping the population healthy, raising healthier kids, and helping the elderly stay healthy through well-planned physical activity.

That’s what Dr. Michael Gaetz has discovered in his 10 years of combining teaching and research at UFV. Gaetz takes a creative approach to research, seeking community partners, collaborating with faculty from other disciplines, and borrowing equipment or arranging for donations.

Projects that Gaetz has collaborated on: • A study of concussion injury done in partnership with GW Graham School football teams (worked with coaches and medical volunteers and student) • A project that saw kinesiology and nursing students conducting exercises with care home residents and measuring, tracking, and analyzing results (worked with students, UFV Nursing faculty members) • A project that measured the impact of dance activities in a care home, in which elementary students visited residents (worked with colleagues from Nursing and Media and Communication Studies) • Research on the effect of hydration on fluid balance of university athletes (worked with KPE colleagues).

Each year through this award, UFV recognizes not only the classroom aspect of teaching, but also the behind-the-scenes work and dedication that goes above and beyond the job description.

The professor emeritus designation is an honorary status awarded to select retiring faculty members in recognition of long service and contribution to the university.

Paul Burkhart Department of Communications For a teacher committed to studying seniors, psychology instructor Dr. Andrea Hughes sure has a way with today’s youth.

As the 2014 recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award at the University of the Fraser Valley, Hughes’ success is a product of her interminable fascination with studying memory, especially in older generations.

“I think students feed off my energy,” she says.

“I enjoy what I do and I find the subject matter genuinely interesting, but it helps to take it outside of the textbook and really engage with what you’re learning about.”

Hughes holds a PhD and MA in psychology from Simon Fraser University, and a BA with honours in psychology from the University of Saskatchewan. She joined UFV in 2007 following her postdoctoral fellowship at St. Louis’ Washington University.

Away from university life, Hughes enjoys spending time with her extended family, and exploring the outdoors with her partner and their dogs Bella and Dexter.

At day’s end, Hughes’ impact might be best summarized by fourth-year UFV psychology student Robyn Matthews.

“Dr. Hughes is the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by. My life is forever changed by the impression she has left on it and I can think of no one more deserving of the 2014 Teaching Excellence award.”

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT DOCTOR OF LETTERS CHARLLOTTE KWON

A colourful commitment to craft As an artist, documentary filmmaker, educator, businesswoman, and humanitarian, Charllotte Kwon works tirelessly as an advocate for the preservation of tradition and craft and the betterment of society, leading to her selection as a University of the Fraser Valley honorary degree recipient.

Her compassion, drive, and knowledge have changed the lives of many through symposia, masterclass workshops, and natural dye teaching, all driven by the Maiwa Foundation, which is dedicated to the preservation of traditional craft and to employment, empowerment, and the eradication of poverty through craft in developing nations.

Her efforts and dedication to the preservation of the traditional extended to the boundaries of human experience when Maiwa Foundation (started in 1997) helped raise $35,000 for shelter, food, and medical supplies after an earthquake rocked India’s Kutch region in 2001.

Kwon became intrigued by plant dyes while travelling through Indonesia, Thailand, and China. She found craftspeople struggling to find fair market value for their work; often undercut by mass-produced pieces made with artificial dyes, poor materials, and machines.

Her Maiwa retail store on Granville Island that sells artisanal clothing, bedding, jewelry, and art also includes warehouse and workshop areas that employ about 30 people.

The non-profit Maiwa Foundation — connected to but separate from Kwon’s forprofit business — raises money for small grants and larger projects that don’t fit within traditional non-governmental organization requests. Grants from $500 to $1,500 help craftspeople do everything from buy a bike to build a well.

“It’s almost beyond our comprehension how fast things are changing, and how fast traditional arts are silently disappearing,” Kwon says.

“It’s their heritage and their inheritance.”

Kwon’s work has supported the University of the Fraser Valley as well, through the mentorship, supervision, and the hiring of UFV fashion students.

Jumping 400 years of history paves the way for MOOCs and more Whether lit by flickering oil lamps in bucolic Mexican farmsteads or glowing computer screens tied wireless across the world, quests for education and connection remain the same in the eyes of University of the Fraser Valley 2014 honorary degree recipient George Siemens.

The irony of developing one of the world’s most innovative online education platforms after growing up without the basic tools of mass communication isn’t lost on Siemens, who was born into a Mexican Mennonite farm with no electricity.

The house he moved to in Morden, Manitoba at the age of six held no newspapers, television, or radio.

Still, dinner tables in both homes featured all the facets of Facebook.

“It’s about connection and communication. Trying to make sense of the world, share information, entertain, educate. The principle of connecting and making simple sense of the world remains the same,” he says.

Along with University of Manitoba colleague Stephen Downes, Siemens launched what is widely recognized as the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in 2008. That course on learning theory attracted enough students to fill a small town — about 2,300 in total.

Seen as a landmark in open teaching, MOOCs are an extension of distance learning that build communities for professors, teaching assistants, and students through online forums. They’re designed around the basic idea that if students are passionate for knowledge, and allowed to pursue that passion, they’ll be more motivated, engaged, and successful.

Siemens recently took a leave from Athabasca University to join University of Texas at Arlington as the executive director of the Learning Innovation and Networked Knowledge Research Lab. Despite the rise of MOOCs, Siemens says traditional universities will continue to play vital roles in educating generations to come.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT DOCTOR OF LAWS MR. DOUG HAMILTON

FVC pioneer helped bring post-secondary education to the Fraser Valley Few people alive today have as long an association with Fraser Valley College as Doug Hamilton.

Hamilton, a retired agrologist, was the first chair of the FVC board. But even before that, he played an integral role in the creation of a college in the Valley.

Until 1974, people who wanted to get a post-secondary education in the Fraser Valley had to move away.

Groups of citizens worked together on several occasions throughout the 1960s and ’70s to lobby for a college, but early efforts were unsuccessful.

In 1973, Hamilton, a member of the Abbotsford school board, was elected chair of the steering committee that was part of the (ultimately successful) task force looking into the feasibility of establishing a college.

“Many of us strongly believed that local kids shouldn’t have to leave home for their first or second year of university,” Doug recalls.

Hamilton’s job as an agriculture specialist came with a mandate of providing education to farmers.

“Given the Valley’s strong agricultural sector, I believed that college we created needed a strong agricultural component.”

Guided by the University Act, the management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business, and affairs of the university are vested in the Board. The Board consists of appointed members and elected faculty, staff, and student members. Members sit as part of the stage party during convocation.

Senate is the academic governing body at UFV which is responsible for policies concerning academic matters and advising the board on policies of mutual interest. Members of the Senate may also join faculty and members of the board as part of the stage party.
