GRADUATION LISTS
SPECIAL MESSAGES Messages
From the President
Congratulations graduates! You have persevered and succeeded in achieving your goal in this phase of your educational journey. I hope today is an occasion you will remember fondly for the rest of your life.
This year UFV is proud to invite our community into the heart of our Abbotsford campus for Convocation 2023 and I’m thrilled to see UFV grads crossing our stage — especially this class, whose education was shaped by the difficult years of the pandemic. While I am looking forward to our ceremonies, I’ll miss President Joanne MacLean, who embraces these days with enthusiasm and energy but who cannot be with us this year as she is recovering from a health issue. UFV is fortunate to have such a dedicated and dynamic leader and we are looking forward to welcoming her back in the months ahead.
UFV’s coat of arms features the Halq’eméylem word Íyáqáwtxw, which means “the House of Transformation”. This word also appears in our mission statement: engaging learners, transforming lives, and building community. At UFV we are grateful to have such an incredibly strong and supportive community — a community that has graciously supported our students by providing research opportunities, co-op and work-study placements, financial support, and mentorship and guidance for UFV students for nearly 50 years. We are delighted to have members of our community — and yours — here to witness your transformation from students to alumni.
The achievement of a university credential is seldom managed without the support of many people — your family, friends, parents, and partners. Today is a celebration for these incredible people too, so please take time to thank and honour them for their role in your success.
I’m confident the skills you have gained will transform your world and serve you well as you begin your career. Education is integral in understanding and caring for the world around us: from the environment to the arts, from health science to economics, no matter your area of study, education will help you navigate the forces shaping society.
On behalf of everyone at UFV, enjoy today and I wish you every success in life. Congratulations!
Dr. James Mandigo Acting President and Vice-Chancellor

From the Chancellor
Thank you for joining the University of the Fraser Valley to celebrate the achievements of a remarkable and diverse graduating class. In six ceremonies, held for the first time in more than a decade in the heart of our Abbotsford campus, and in our own venue, UFV will award credentials to graduates from a wide variety of academic, applied, and professional programs.
Graduates, I applaud your talent, your hard work, and your success. You have earned our respect and the respect of your colleagues and mentors by displaying excellence and by overcoming challenges along the way. We are confident your acquired knowledge will benefit you, your family, and your community.
I know you have received unconditional support from your friends, faculty, staff, and many others during your journey, so please take a moment to thank your support team and contemplate how you might “pay it forward” to those who may one day need your help.
At UFV we engage learners, transform lives, and build community. The university is fortunate to have many volunteers, community leaders, alumni, and benefactors helping us accomplish this mission. We at UFV are deeply grateful for this community support and we thank you for partnering with us as we build a strong educational community and a strong future. We appreciate the trust you have placed in the university and treasure this support. Thank you for sharing UFV’s belief that education is one of the best investments in our students, in our future, and in our society.
Congratulations graduates, I wish you all the best in the next chapter of your journey.
Dr. Andy Sidhu Chancellor

Traditions
OUR
TRADITIONS
Stó:lō Territory
UFV strives to be a place of learning that recognizes, respects, and includes Indigenous ways of knowing. Our campuses are situated on the territory of the Stó:lō peoples. The Stó:lō have an intrinsic relationship with what they refer to as S’ólh Téméxw (Our Sacred Land); therefore, we express our gratitude and respect for the honour of living and working on this territory.
THE TALKING STICK
The Talking Stick is a gift from the Stó:lō people to UFV, honouring all Indigenous people. The Talking Stick and Stó:lō drummers lead the academic procession into Convocation and the recession after the ceremony.
The figures on the Talking Stick are a wolf and a thunderbird. The wolf is symbolic of “the teacher” in Stó:lō territory, while the thunderbird represents the highest level of knowledge.
Most universities in the Commonwealth have a ceremonial mace, which accompanies the Convocation ceremonies. It is the staff of office, representing official authority (like the Speaker of the House of Commons).
UFV uses the Talking Stick rather than a mace for this purpose, thus bringing together a partnership between Indigenous and university traditions.
THE DRUM
The Ceremonial Drum was presented to UFV by the Stó:lō people in 1997. The drum is decorated with the symbol of a thunderbird.
Steven Point, who was then the chiefs’ representative of the Stó:lō Nation, presented the drum for use at Convocation and other ceremonies.
“It’s with great pride that I present a symbol of our fraternity, camaraderie, and loyalty,” said Point at the presentation ceremony.
“We all spent nine months with our mothers, waiting to come in to the world, and we heard her heartbeat, and when we were born, we recognized our mothers by their heartbeat. When we make the sound of a drum it’s a symbol of the heartbeat of our mother. It’s a precious sound, it gathers people together, and we sing our songs.
“That’s why we chose this symbol to present to you. We truly want to come together, and to have a good relationship with all of you. I hope and pray that it will always stand as a symbol of the affinity between our groups of people.”

Traditions
OUR TRADITIONS
ACADEMIC DRESS
Traditional academic regalia consists of a gown, hood, and a mortarboard or cap and tassel. The wearing of robes became common in the Middle Ages. In monasteries and universities of the time, scholars wore the same long closed gowns as other medieval men. By the time the University of Cambridge was founded in the early thirteenth century, doctors in law and music were permitted to wear gowns in scarlet, purple, and red. Over time, garments and colours came to identify their university. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or the colours of the city in which the university was located.
At UFV, regalia uses the university’s rich green colours. There are vee-stoles for diploma and certificate graduates, while bachelor’s degree program graduates wear degree hoods. The coloured binding or trim on the edge of the degree hoods represents the faculty from which a student is graduating.
UFV hood trim colours:
White Arts
Light blue Education
Forest green Professional Studies
Silver Health Sciences
Apricot Nursing
Pale green Science
Emerald green Alumni Association (blue cord) Board of Governors (silver cord) Senate (gold cord)
Pale green on UFV Faculty and Administration a green hood
The addition of red cord denotes a master’s degree
Honorary degree hood colours:
White velvet Doctor of Letters
Purple velvet Doctor of Laws
Orange velvet Doctor of Technology
THE CHANCELLOR’S MEDALLION
UFV’s medallion is worn by the Chancellor for very special occasions. The radiant diamonds in the design symbolize future alumni spreading their knowledge. The BC jade in the centre reflects our region’s rich farming and ecological roots. This hand-crafted 18kt white and yellow gold medallion was a gift to the university from Brian Lee of Abbotsford.
THE UFV COAT OF ARMS
UFV’s coat of arms (on the cover) features symbols of Stó:lō culture, local wildlife, and elements of the Fraser Valley landscape.
UFV motto: Íyáqáwtxw — in Halq’eméylem, the language of the Stó:lō people, it means, “House of Transformation”, symbolizing the transformation of character and intellect.
Blue herons — Indigenous symbols of inquisitiveness, determination, and excellent judgement. Sighting a heron before a hunt indicated the hunt would be victorious. This parallels the search for knowledge at UFV.
The sturgeon — a symbol of abundance and a source of life that lives in the Fraser River (symbolized by the green and white undulating stripes). These represent UFV as a source of knowledge and vitality.
The hummingbird — representative of joy, resilience, agility, and the ability to travel great distances. These mirror UFV’s mandate to provide lasting knowledge, the ability to respond to the community, endurance over time, and the transfer of knowledge to students for their journey.

John Botti
Bachelor of Integrated Studies
A successful New York businessman already armed with a BA in economics from prestigious Haverford College, John Botti was looking for a new and meaningful way to help people around the world.
He found it in food.
Moving his family to BC to pursue his education in UFV’s Bachelor of Integrated Studies, John focused on planning sustainable food and agriculture systems, dedicating himself to solving agricultural supply chain issues during the early days of COVID.
In April 2020, he and friends founded Farms to Food Banks (FTFB) — a grassroots pandemic-inspired response to agricultural supply chain disruption, wasted crops, lost farmers’ income, and food shortages in the South Bronx. With its partner East Side House of the Bronx, FTFB raised $1.5 million in two months from 2,500 donors, distributing 1.3 million pounds of food, and feeding 230,000 people. The project went from idea to execution in only two weeks.
A non-traditional lifelong learner, John (with FTFB) was featured on ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, and other national and international media outlets. John’s next venture is to develop agrihoods, planned communities integrating agriculture into clustered residential neighborhoods. The purpose: facilitating local food production while providing green space, recreation, aesthetics and value for a community.

Mike Retasket
DOCTOR OF LETTERS
A renowned dancer, drummer, political leader, negotiator, cultural interpreter and traditional Secwépemc knowledge keeper, Mike Retasket’s experiences combine for invaluable insight on boards ranging from the First Nations Leadership Council to the Fraser Basin Council, First Nations Forestry Council, Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Tourism Industry Association of BC, and many more.
Wisdom earned through 10 years as Chief of the Bonaparte Indian Band helped him negotiate important government agreements, acting as a signatory on the Transformative Change Accord, Public Safety Accord, and the Leadership Accord. Despite the long hours, Mike insists he’s happy to do the work — although it hasn’t been without difficulty.
“It’s not easy being an Indian,” he admits, preferring the nomenclature used around his grandparents’ kitchen table.
“We have to know the language, we have to know the songs, we have to know the ceremonies, we have to know the culture, we have to know the traditions, we have to know our medicines, we have to know our territory and our water,” he said.
“And once we know that, we have the responsibility of passing those teachings on. It could be heavy, but if I turn that heaviness around I can use it in the work towards my healing,” he says.
Born in BC, Mike was raised largely in Washington State by older siblings after his mom and dad passed away when he was five and 13, respectively.
The youngest of 11 children, he was identified at an early age as a talented drummer and dancer. This integration into traditional Indigenous customs opened the door to a lifetime of diverse activism, leading to his current job educating tourists about the region’s rich Indigenous history in BC’s Barkerville Historic Town and Park. Learned through ancient teachings, his advice to those willing to listen is simple.
“Remember who you are, remember where you come from, leave the land better than how you found it, and speak when you’re spoken to,” he advises.
His multi-faceted, multi-generational, and open approach to Indigenous education and environmental protection played a large part in the effusive support for Mike’s honorary degree from Eric Davis, Special Advisor to the UFV President, who nominated him.
“Mike exemplifies UFV’s mission, vision, and values. While preserving and teaching traditional knowledge, and working towards reconciliation, he engages learners, transforms lives, and builds community,” Davis says.
“A man who has devoted his adult life to healing by teaching us to take care of our environment, our ancestors, our culture, and each other, is a most deserving candidate for an honorary degree from UFV.”
16 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT | TUESDAY, JUNE 13 | 2:30 PM
Dr. Judith Soon
DOCTOR OF LAWS
Sometimes it takes one defining moment to change life’s trajectory. For Dr. Judith Soon, that moment was in her Grade 12 year when she and four other classmates toured the inner workings of a pharmacy. From this experience, Soon knew she wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy, one that has turned out to be extremely rewarding. She is especially proud of developing and maintaining a province-wide clinical pharmacy program for long-term care facilities, helping establish the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair (FVRSF), and being actively involved with Canada-Wide Science Fairs.
When asked about her achievements, Dr. Soon says she thinks of herself as primarily a support person.
“If I see a problem that needs solving, a system that’s not working, or something that needs to be developed or modified, I’ll get some colleagues together and work on changing the system.”
It was this unassuming and patient-focused attitude that Dr. Soon brought with her when she first moved to the Fraser Valley and noticed a problem within long-term care facilities.
She discovered that prescription processes for members of the aging population living in care homes were not straightforward. She found that nearly every resident in a long-term care home had a different pharmacy.
“A 100-bed nursing home had maybe 30 different pharmacies all bringing their prescription vials and deliveries to the nursing station.”
This spurred her to gather some colleagues and create the first consultant clinical pharmacy group in the province, which would then go on to manage medications for 55 long-term care facilities.
“One pharmacy could manage all the medications for one nursing home,” she stated. This change decreased the negative side effects patients experienced.
In 1992, Dr. Soon signed up to judge at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair (FVRSF). She then became the chief judge in 1995.
Dr. Soon then became chief judge at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in 2005 and has even been invited to international science fairs in Taiwan, Ireland, and Siberia to judge and coordinate the set-up of new science fairs. Recently retired from her position as an associate professor of Pharmacy at UBC, Dr. Soon is actively involved in the Canada-Wide Science Fair this year in Edmonton, helping coordinate and judge 340 science and technology projects from across the country.
17 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14 | 9:30 AM
Naxaxalhts’i Albert (Sonny) McHalsie
DOCTOR OF LETTERS
Naxaxalhts’i is not an academic in the traditional Western sense, but by sharing his knowledge with researchers, scholars, and students over the past four decades, he has ensured that a wealth of knowledge about the Stó:lō people, and their culture and traditions is preserved, shared, and interpreted for current and future generations. He has a long association with UFV, and also cooperates with other institutions through his role as an instructor and mentor for an ethnohistory field school.
Perhaps more important than his academic contributions is Naxaxalhts’i’s work as an historian and teacher within his own Stó:lō cultural tradition. He is one of the most distinguished interpreters of the Coast Salish world of his generation and serves as a bridge between Elders (many of whom are no longer living), and current scholars and interested people of both Stó:lō and non-Stó:lō descent.
Naxaxalhts’i, more commonly called “Sonny” by his many friends, is an active adjunct member of UFV’s History department, regularly leads faculty and staff on Stó:lō Place Name Tours, acts often as an Elder and Witness for university events and gatherings, has served as a member of the UFV Indigenization Committee, and has been a guest speaker for several events in Xwelítem Siyáya: Allyship and Reconciliation Building, a collaboration between UFV and a group of Stó:lō agencies to offer an educational program to help participants enhance their capacity for reconciliation building.
“I nominated Naxaxalhts’i, to recognize him but also the Stó:lō tradition in which he was trained and is training others,” notes Dr. Keith Carlson, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous and Community-Engaged History. “Indeed, as one academic recently articulated, ‘Sonny is a major force in the development of constructive relations between the mainstream community of British Columbia and Indigenous people here.’”
Shirley Hardman, UFV Associate Vice President, Indigenous, says that Naxaxalht’i embodies what the university seeks in an Indigenous community-based educator.
“The engagement he has with every community in S’olh Téméxw, with the various Elders and knowledgekeepers, the leaders, storytellers, Halq’emeylem-language speakers, and the cultural educators ensures that what he shares, what he teaches, reflects that which is Stó:lō. His pedagogy is largely an immersion in the experiential. It is how he has learned and it is true to our Stó:lō epistemology. He educates those who listen. His ability as a teacher, storyteller, knowledge-keeper/historian, and a witness to our Stó:lō lived reality. His knowledge is without parallel.”
