From the President Today is a special day, one of my favourite days in the academic calendar. For UFV graduands it is a celebration of the culmination of one or more years of study. Convocation is also a time to gather with classmates and professors, and I hope it will be an occasion that you will remember fondly for the rest of your lives. I congratulate you for your hard work and perseverance, and hope that you will reflect with pride on your accomplishments. The achievement of a university credential is seldom managed without the support of family, friends, parents, and partners. Today is a celebration for them too, and I hope that you will take time to thank them and honour their role in your success. Everyone at UFV is united by a shared sense of pride in your achievement. The University is proud of its graduands and we hope you are equally proud to today be joining a community of UFV alumni. Please take confidence from all you have learned and experienced at UFV and expect that your greatest successes in life are yet to come. We hope you will remember your education goes beyond your classes and textbooks, and that life-long learning enables continued success throughout your life and career. In four ceremonies UFV will award credentials to 2,300 graduates from a wide variety of academic, applied, and professional programs. Graduates, I applaud your talent, hard work, and your successes. You have earned our respect by mastering challenges and we are confident your knowledge and skills will benefit you, your families, and ultimately our society. I also know you have had unconditional support from family, friends, faculty, and staff along your journey. Please take a moment and thank your support team over the next few days. UFV is fortunate to have many volunteers, community leaders, patrons, and benefactors who take on the work of building community through their efforts with our students. The university is very grateful for these close friends of UFV. Thank you for sharing the belief that education is one of the best investments in our student’s future, and our society’s future. From the Alumni Association On behalf of the UFV Alumni Association Board of Directors, congratulations to the graduating class of 2018! We welcome you as lifetime members of our diverse and worldwide community that connects more than 38,000 UFV alumni. The day you accepted your offer of admission from the University of the Fraser Valley, you joined a life-long community. Your journey at UFV doesn’t finish at Convocation, it is just beginning, as you now join the UFV Alumni Association. We measure the success of our university by the success of our alumni who are UFV’s greatest ambassadors. To assist future generations of alumni in achieving success and growth, your UFV Alumni Association Board of Directors has created a new strategic plan building on the solid foundation of previous plans. Our new strategic plan serves as a road map helping UFV students and alumni focus even more intently on core activities that will empower alumni present and future. By collaborating with UFV and our diverse communities, we are fostering strong and continuing connections between UFV alumni, students, and the university. Stó:lō Territory UFV strives to be a place of learning that recognizes, respects, and includes Indigenous ways of knowing. Our Fraser Valley campus locations are in the traditional territory of the Stó:lō people: S’olh Temexw. THE TALKING STICK

THE DRUM

The Talking Stick is a gift from the Stó:lō people to UFV, honouring all Indigenous people. The Talking Stick and Stó:lō drummers lead the academic procession into Convocation and the recession after the ceremony.

The UFV Ceremonial Drum was presented to UFV by the Stó:lō people in 1997. The drum is decorated with the symbol of a thunderbird.

The figures on the Talking Stick are a wolf and a thunderbird. The wolf is symbolic of “the teacher” in Stó:lō territory, while the thunderbird represents the highest level of knowledge. Most universities in the Commonwealth have a ceremonial mace, which accompanies the Convocation ceremonies. It is the staff of office, representing official authority (like the Speaker of the House of Commons). UFV uses the Talking Stick rather than a mace for this purpose, thus bringing together a partnership between Indigenous and university traditions.

Judge Steven Point, who was then the chiefs’ representative of the Stó:lō Nation, presented the drum for use at Convocation and other ceremonies. “It’s with great pride that I present a symbol of our fraternity, camaraderie, and loyalty,” said Point at the presentation ceremony. “We all spent nine months with our mothers, waiting to come in to the world, and we heard her heartbeat, and when we were born, we recognized our mothers by their heartbeat. When we make the sound of a drum it’s a symbol of the heartbeat of our mother. It’s a precious sound, it gathers people together, and we sing our songs. “That’s why we chose this symbol to present to you. We truly want to come together, and to have a good relationship with all of you. I hope and pray that it will always stand as a symbol of the affinity between our groups of people.”

ACADEMIC DRESS

THE CHANCELLOR’S MEDALLION

Traditional academic regalia consists of a gown, hood, and a mortarboard or cap and tassel. The wearing of robes became common in the Middle Ages. In monasteries and universities of the time, scholars wore the same long closed gowns as other medieval men. By the time the University of Cambridge was founded in the early thirteenth century, doctors in law and music were permitted to wear gowns in scarlet, purple, and red. Over time, garments and colours came to identify their university. Regalia colours often matched those of the university patron, or the colours of the city in which the university was located.

UFV’s medallion is worn by the Chancellor for very special occasions. The radiant diamonds in the design symbolize future alumni spreading their knowledge. The BC jade in the centre reflects our region’s rich farming and ecological roots. This hand-crafted 18 kt white and yellow gold medallion was a gift to the university from Brian Lee of Abbotsford.

At UFV, regalia uses the university’s rich green colours. There are vee-stoles for diploma and certificate graduates, while bachelor’s degree program graduates wear degree hoods. The coloured binding or trim on the edge of the degree hoods represents the faculty from which a student is graduating.

THE UFV COAT OF ARMS UFV’s coat of arms (on the cover) features symbols of Stó:lô culture, local wildlife, and elements of the Fraser Valley landscape. UFV Motto: IYAQÁWTXW — in Halq’eméylem, the language of the Stó:lō First Nations, it means house of transformation, symbolizing the transformation of character and intellect. Blue herons — First Peoples’ symbols of inquisitiveness, determination, and excellent judgement. Sighting a heron before a hunt indicated the hunt would be victorious. This parallels the search for knowledge at UFV. The sturgeon — a symbol of abundance and a source of life that lives in the Fraser River (symbolized by the green and white undulating stripes). These represent UFV as a source of knowledge and vitality. The hummingbird — representative of joy, resilience, agility, and the ability to travel great distances. These mirror UFV’s mandate to provide lasting knowledge, the ability to respond to the community, endurance over time, and the transfer of knowledge to students for their journey. Vivienne Beard was involved in several UFV service groups including the UFV Pre-med Student Alliance, the UFV Student Engagement Team, and the UFV Yoga Club. She founded the Biology and Chemistry Student Association Science Peer Associate Program that assists new students in their transition to science studies at UFV. She worked in the UFV Academic Success Centre as a peer tutor and gained experience as a genomics research assistant through a UFV work-study program.

Sukhi Brar’s many achievements are a reflection of her dedication, skill, and perseverance. As president of the UFV Student Union Society, Sukhi led the first all-female executive team to serve and govern the university’s 9,000 student members. During her time at UFV she was a mentorship and leadership coordinator and assisted with launching many services including the Gender Equality Centre, PrideUFV, and a full-service food bank.

Vivienne was the Faculty of Science representative at the London International Youth Science Forum in 2016 and met with other top science students from around the world. “We have many roads to take, challenges to conquer, and dreams to follow. I hope my fellow graduates will be courageous and inspire others in their own journey,” explains Vivienne. Vivienne will be attending medical school at UBC this fall.

“UFV fosters the development of active citizens through the blended delivery of conceptual knowledge and experiential learning opportunities. This model supports the development of leaders and active citizens who are curious, courageous, compassionate, and full of humility,” states Sukhi. She is a recipient of the British Columbia Community Achievement Award and currently serves as a director on the board of Abbotsford Community Services.

Stephanie Park is an inspiration to students and faculty in the Child and Youth Care program at UFV. A champion for others, she managed obstacles with grace and wit and accomplished her educational goals while caring for and mentoring a young woman with a disability.

Scott Thompson has always displayed an innate talent for wiring and electronics. His father recalls Scott proudly installing his first stereo in his car in the family driveway, only to have it ripped out by thieves that same evening. Learning from this experience, Scott rewired a second stereo; designed and built a fibreglass dash for his truck and included a hidden receiver, amps, speaker mounts, and an iPad holder.

Stephanie’s capacity as coach and mentor is further demonstrated in her work leading sports camps. She coaches wheelchair basketball for the BC Junior co-ed provincial team. Through her zealous advocacy, Stephanie has broken down barriers in the field of child life, navigating medical systems as a volunteer at Children’s Hospital. “I would not change a single experience in my life. The things I’ve learned, the people I have met. I wouldn’t be on the career path I‘m on had it not been for all of my life experiences,” says Stephanie. After graduation, Stephanie plans to launch her career in assisting children in hospital settings.

Scott has worked on pipelines and in construction but returned to UFV to pursue his ultimate goal of starting his own commercial and residential electrical company. “UFV taught me to buckle down and focus on the key elements of my trade. It’s intense right from the first day, and the math and physics components were tough, but it has been a very rewarding experience,” Scott explains. Scott will be working with a local electrical firm and will be getting married this July.

Sophie Schmidt DOCTOR OF LET TERS

Sophie Schmidt is a member of the Canadian women’s national soccer team and a professional soccer player, now with FCC Frankfurt of Germany’s elite Women’s Bundesliga. Prior to joining FCC Frankfurt, Schmidt earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Portland and played for several North American professional teams. Schmidt has played for Canada in three Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in 2012 in London, and again in 2016 in Rio. She has also represented Canada at three FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments. In total, Schmidt has represented Canada in over 150 matches. Beyond her physical talents, Sophie is known for character on and off the field. In spite of her busy soccer schedule, she regularly returns to her home town of Abbotsford. She is a role model for young girls and women, and also has an active presence on social media where she has thousands of followers to whom she regularly offers inspirational messages. Schmidt inspires through her dedication, leadership, community involvement, and modelling of positive values. Schmidt is training with the Canadian Women’s National soccer team on June 5. She will recieve her doctorate at a later date.

Kim Bolan DOCTOR OF LET TERS

Kim Bolan’s body of work is unparalleled, from covering arguably the biggest crime story in Canadian history to reporting on a gangster’s plan to kill her at home. For this and much more, Bolan will be recognized for her outstanding achievements with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree at the University of the Fraser Valley at its June 5 afternoon Convocation ceremonies. For the past three decades her legacy has been pressed into the pages of the Vancouver Sun. She burst onto the national news scene while covering the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182. Her coverage garnered aggression from many connected to the case, leading to death threats and bullets fired at her house. In 2008 she started a crime blog called The Real Scoop, supplementing her hard news writing with insider information on explosive gang activity. In 2017 Bolan was presented with the prestigious Jack Webster Lifetime Achievement Award. She’s also been awarded the Courage in Journalism Award by the International Women’s Media Foundation, the first ever Press Freedom Award from the National Press Club of Canada, two National Newspaper Awards, two Canadian Association of Journalists awards, the Reg Robson award for her commitment to freedom of expression, the Paul Kidd Courage Prize, the Tara Singh Hayer Memorial Award, the 2017 Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award, and six Jack Webster awards. “This is definitely what I’m born to do,” she says. “And it’s a job I will continue to do because it’s important to shine a light on these dark corners in our community, even when I don’t like what I see.”

Dr. Malwinder Singh Dhami DOCTOR OF LET TERS

Quiet, humble, and magnanimous, Dr. Malwinder Singh Dhami is often described as a man of vision and commitment. He was a founding contributor to UFV’s Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies (now SASI) and UFV’s campus in Chandigarh, but his contributions stretch far beyond the Indo Canadian community. Dr. Dhami joined forces with the UFV Mennonite Community Advisory Committee to establish UFV’s Peace and Conflict Studies program, and helped support the study of Halq’emeylem, the traditional language of the Stó:lō people. He’s made more than 40 gifts to UFV over the past 15 years, contributing to students and student activities as diverse as UFV Theatre, the agriculture campaign, athletics, and the Student Union Angel Tree fundraiser. For this and more, Dr. Dhami will be recognized with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the University of the Fraser Valley at its June 6 morning Convocation ceremony. His donations often end in one dollar extra ($2001, $5001) as a symbolic gesture meant to inspire himself and others to continue to grow a fund. “For me, education is the best tool for a bright future. By contributing to the university it allows students to contribute to their community.” He doesn’t ask much, but does ask something. “I humbly request for each and every one to help someone in need, within their means,” he says. “If you help someone, you are not helping to get the rewards, you are helping to improve someone else’s life.”

Siyamiyateliyot Elizabeth Phillips DOCTOR OF LET TERS

Siyamiyateliyot Elizabeth Phillips is the last surviving fluent speaker of Upriver Halq’eméylem, the language of the Stó:lō people. She has dedicated her life to documenting, preserving, and revitalizing Halq’eméylem. Her work in this regard is well known locally, and shared nationally and internationally. Siyamiyateliyot was born in 1939, and growing up on Seabird Island, Halq’eméylem was her first language. She still thinks in Halq’eméylem. When she was a child, many people in her community spoke Halq’eméylem, but after residential school experiences, children came home not knowing their language and eventually only the elders could speak it. In spite of many obstacles, her dedication has enabled her to share her knowledge of Halq’eméylem widely. She regularly visits UFV’s classes where Halq’eméylem is taught. UBC lecturer and linguist Strang Burton recorded her speaking her native tongue both on film and as an ultrasound recording, enabling students to see how the muscles move inside the mouth for certain sounds; and she and the late Xwiyólemot Tillie Gutierrez and linguist Susan Russell co-authored Talking in Halq’eméylem, Documenting Conversation in an Indigenous Language, published in 2017. Siyamiyateliyot Elizabeth Phillips receives her doctorate at the 2:30 pm ceremony on June 6.

Each ceremony is approximately two hours long. To keep disruptions to a minimum, we ask graduates to stay for the entire ceremony and ask guests to remain seated during the ceremony.

REGALIA (GOWNS)

Each graduate will have two photos taken by Artona Photography: one as they shake hands with the President, and one as they leave the stage. Family members and friends will have photo opportunities with their graduate after the ceremony. As professional photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to enjoy the ceremony and remain in their seats.

Graduating students and faculty are reminded to return their gowns following the ceremony and reception.

RECEPTION Immediately following the ceremony, all guests are invited to join graduates, faculty, and staff at an informal reception on the concourse of Abbotsford Centre. Light refreshments will be served.

SERVICES Both prior to and following the ceremony, you will find the following services on the concourse: • UFV Bookstore for alumni merchandise and graduation gifts • UFV Alumni Association for fresh-cut flowers, commemorative wine orders, Leader frames, Commencement t-shirts and more • Concession for purchasing snacks and refreshments.
