As I reflect on my first year as Chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees one word immediately comes to mind: thankfulness. I am truly thankful for our alumni and friends. Thank you for the generosity of your time, resources, and continued commitment to the university and its mission. This issue of The Arch Annual Report highlights our donors and the impact you helped make on the SDSM&T campus. Last year, endowed and non-endowed gifts provided the university with $3.4 million in academic and athletic scholarships, $1.2 million for department support, $720,000 in faculty and research support, $450,000 for student organizations, and $258,000 towards facility upkeep. Through your financial support, we are changing the lives of aspiring professionals, as well as building a stronger university. Your gifts have meaning and intent, and are making a difference. The Board of Trustees, along with the Foundation staff, is pleased to welcome alumnus Jim Rankin (EE 78) as the 19th president of SDSM&T. Rankin, a South Dakota native from Draper and Fort Pierre, was chief research officer and professor of electrical engineering at the University of Arkansas. He succeeds Jan Puszynski, who served as interim president after Heather Wilson left the university to become Secretary of the United States Air Force. We are excited for President Rankin’s return to the Mines campus. We look forward to working with him to advance the university, so we can prepare leaders in science and engineering to meet the demands of today and the needs of tomorrow. All my best,

The Foundation was fortunate to have Larry Pearson (ME 72) and Jim Green (ME 74), two outstanding alumni, serve on the Board of Trustees for several terms. Foundation President Joel Kincart expressed his gratitude, “A key mark of a successful foundation is the quality of its board members. I was only able to work with Larry and Jim during a brief period of their overall service, but during this time, they both provided exceptional volunteer leadership for the Foundation.” Former Board Chair Lorin Brass (MetE 75) echoes that statement, “The time and effort they dedicated to the Foundation has been unsurpassed and set the bar high for all of us. Larry and Jim have provided the Foundation with tremendous leadership. They are people of integrity who are willing to step up and make a difference.” As members of the Executive Committee, they were engaged in the governance of the organization, as well as the leadership of key individual projects. Larry has been an instrumental part of the vision to build a new Alumni Center and the Campus Hub project that includes the Surbeck Center Expansion. With his wife Linda by his side, their generosity and commitment have supported the mechanical engineering department, athletics, the Wellness Center, and scholarships from their hometowns. Linda and Larry Pearson
Larry was an executive with TENASKA Power in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was one of the company’s earliest employees. He retired in 2008 as the Operations Group President and CEO. Larry has served as the President of the Alumni Association and on the Mechanical Engineering Industrial Advisory Board. Jim has recruited for Caterpillar on campus, served on the Mechanical Engineering Industrial Advisory Board, chaired the Academic Advisory Board, and championed the funding for the Caterpillar Student Excellence Center. Jim and his wife Connie are well known faces on the SDSM&T campus. The Greens have been successful in their recruitment of high school students from Bridgewater, Nebraska, and are committed to helping those students and their community. They proudly donated the Grubby statue on campus as a reminder of the hard-working, fun-loving spirit that is part of the School of Mines history. In addition to spearheading the creation of Grubby Green on campus, the Greens have also created the Jim and Connie Green CAMP Faculty Award and the James and Connie Green Scholarship. We extend our sincerest thank you to Larry and Jim for their contributions to campus. Their accomplishments reflect the pride they have in our university and will have a lasting impact on students, faculty, and staff for years to come.

I will forever be grateful for this amazing experience. The Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) program and Energy Resources Initiative (ERI) recently partnered for a field camp in Williston, North Dakota. The trip was funded by a grant from Haliburton to help increase the number of women interested in careers in the oil and gas industry. Dan Soeder, ERI Director, led the students on the three-day trip that started with a tour of the Halliburton lab facility in Williston. They visited a cement testing lab and had a hands-on experience in a fracking lab, where the students were able to mix fracking fluid. They also viewed various equipment involved in the hydraulic fracturing operation in progress in the field. The next stop was at the ONEOK gas processing plant near Watford City, North Dakota, where propane, butane, and other higher hydrocarbons are separated from the produced gas stream to reduce the BTU value to meet pipeline specifications. The final stop was a McKenzie Energy Partners wastewater disposal well site. Significant amounts of very salty brine are produced with the Bakken oil, and companies like McKenzie are part of the disposal process. Erika Weeks, a sophomore from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the trip. “The field camp experience in North Dakota
was very eye opening. As a chemical engineering major, I’ve learned a lot about ethanol and the field of clean gas, but it was interesting to learn about where the oil came from and processes involved. The people conducting the tours really loved their jobs and were excited to show us around the sites. I will forever be grateful for this amazing experience,� she said. WiSE and ERI are both robust programs on the Mines campus and partnering for the field camp supports a multidisciplinary approach to promote education and research in engineering and science.
ERI & WiSE PARTNER FOR FIELD CAMP
ERI at Mines was started in 2014 with support from donors and to date, over $3.1 million has been pledged or raised in private funds. The program provides resources to better prepare students to enter and excel in the oil and gas industry. The WiSE program provides female students with support, encouragement, and information intended to help them stay in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Students are offered a host of events, including mentoring for all first-year women students, career exploration and planning, access to professional development opportunities and conferences, and outreach opportunities.

“The music performances have allowed me to attend different events and have fun outside the classroom.” Freshman Jason Mitchell, a computer engineering major from Rochester, Minnesota, joined the pep band and jazz band to meet people and get involved on campus.
What do 235 students, 34 community members, and eight faculty and staff have in common? They are all part of the rapidly expanding SDSM&T music program. With nine ensembles, including two new auditioned ensembles, and over 50 students in the pep band, the program is thriving. Sixteen students received scholarships this school year—doubling from eight last year, and approaching a goal of 25 for next year. The arrival of Director of Choirs Matthew Bumbach, DMA, marks another significant change. From the start, he discerned the heart of music at SDSM&T. “It’s evident the music students are here because they love making

music. I knew this place would quickly feel like home,” said Bumbach. He recently finished his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami and holds degrees from University of South Florida and Stetson University. Haley Armstrong, DMA, continues in her role as Director of Bands and reflected on her first year, “The students are so smart and dedicated. Thank you to our alumni and friends for their generous support of the university. I want to extend a special thanks to those who have established an endowment or added to an existing fund. Your gifts have helped our endowment grow to over $55 million, and will allow SDSM&T to prepare future leaders in science and engineering. As you may know, many public and private universities offer scholarships to freshman students. Unfortunately, SDSM&T is unable to offer scholarships from public funds. This means that our freshman scholarships must come from private donors. This year, private donor gifts helped build 16 new scholarships and two new department endowments that will afford over $50,000 of annual support when fully funded. As Investment Committee Chair, I have the opportunity to work with dedicated committee members who volunteer hours of service to achieve the investment mission and goals of the Foundation. We take pride in helping support the needs of students, faculty and staff, and to contribute to institutional excellence The committee continues to work with our investment advisor, INNOVEST, and seeks to balance obtaining reasonable returns against reducing excessive risk. Over the past five years, investment returns have averaged +7.0 percent per year. This fiscal year our investment return was +11.4 percent. Almost all equity asset classes are currently invested in index funds. We continue to replace hedge funds with fixed income funds, which are now 15.2 percent of our portfolio and hedge funds at 3.0 percent. The following pages highlight the Foundation net assets, endowment funds and value, and the giving areas on campus.
