Before landing his big role in My Week with Marilyn, Redmayne had supporting roles in contemporary American indie movies like Savage Grace, alongside Julianne Moore, and The Yellow Handkerchief with Kristen Stewart. He’s also starring in this year’s movie version of the Broadway musical Les Misérables. The young star is currently the face of Burberry Prorsum.

. You just turned 30, how do you feel?

Well to be honest I haven’t even had the time to think about it. The night of my birthday I was on stage playing Shakespeare’s Richard II. I haven’t properly celebrated my 30th. I’m waiting until everything settles down.

. You’ve played in a lot of historical movies, is it

Actually, I’m more under the impression that I have a very bipolar career: either I’m in a movie that portrays a certain British era, or I am in US productions where I incarnate a young American drug addict. I’ll never get bored of telling a good story.

. What attracted you to the story of Colin Clark and

Marilyn Monroe? It’s because I’d never heard of it before, and I was instantly interested in Colin Clark’s character. Also, Michelle being cast in the movie persuaded me even more. She’s an actress I profoundly admire.

4 In an interview, Michelle Williams says that everybody has their own Marilyn Monroe memory. What’s yours? This might be a bit embarrassing, but I must admit that before filming the movie I knew her more for her looks than her work. During my research I watched her films, and it was a revelation to discover how fantastic an actress she really was.

5 One of your first roles, in Savage Grace, was extreme. How did your parents react? I took my then-girlfriend, her family and mine to see it at the London Film Festival and during the first few minutes I thought: “What am I trying to do here? Am I crazy?” Playing an incestuous son who’s making love to his mother on the big screen, in front of his own mother and his girlfriend. I had to do it, but I was very proud of the film.

. Has Hollywood always been your dream?

Honestly, not really. My dream is to be able to juggle between theater and film and to work with interesting people.

7 Tell us about your relationship with Burberry Prorsum. I’ve known Christopher Bailey for five or six years now. He’s a lover of art, and he came to watch me in a play recently. It’s a privilege for me to collaborate with him. I love wearing his clothes, and I love the fact that Burberry is fundamentally British.

Desserts on the menu are freshly made (try the banana split, chocolatestuffed éclair or cutesy lemon meringue pie) and ideal for divulging your own private scandals at Gossïp’s bar-like counter.

Jonny Briggs exposes himself to inspire humanity “I would be doing this whether people were interested in it or not,” says 27-year-old artist Jonny Briggs. This statement encapsulates the young man’s mindset – and consequent aesthetic. His drive to create does not come from commercialism, but from a conflict within. The Berkshire-born artist has always been interested in the internal conflict of the self versus the pre-ordained roles of social interaction. Briggs originally began to train as an architect, but he soon found himself drawn to art, and left the course to start an art foundation degree at the Chelsea College of Art. It was at this stage that he began to examine the relationships within his family, and he continued to do so throughout his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in fine art. In October 2011, Briggs won the Saatchi Gallery’s New Gossip No. 18

Sensations prize, and success soon followed. “It’s been really exciting, but it wasn’t expected. I feel like I have to explore these issues, and the fact that people are interested is a separate factor.” Briggs’ relationship with his family – his father, mother and sisters feature heavily in his work – is one of his main concepts, a concept that informs his shows across Europe this spring, including a major exhibit at Verona’s Fama Gallery. “I’m really interested in how children don’t have any idea of conforming. They cannot think within the box as they don’t even know that the box exists.” The artist’s “The Kiss” features a large wood carved sculpture of his father’s head, with a cast of Briggs’ own head, set in a big grin, on the inside. “I’m very interested in the whole idea of the dou-

ble. How we inherit things from our parents, but we are different – the domino effect of existence.” Another piece, “The Empathetic vs. The Mimic,” is a scene of doubles, two beds parallel each other along with over 200 identical objects that have been arranged to mirror each other symmetrically – Briggs and his partner both appear in the picture set in his aunt’s house. “It’s a rebellion of the childhood photograph. Yet it relates to family, highlighting how two things, two people, can be the same but very different. Sofia Ajram casts a spell with her whimsical photographs Dreamy gamine Sofia Ajram is the spirit behind Cosmic Witch, a feast of a blog featuring photography, accessories and fashion. Ajram’s shots are like modern tarot cards; a trio of girls casting spells in the forest, lovers in union in a hotel room lit like a fluorescent starburst or her own doe-like form, gracefully levitating above a bed in the moonlight. And with spreads in magazines such as Bullett and Vice, Ajram’s star is clearly on the rise. Claiming such varied inspirations as ‘70s horror and erotica, Norse mythology, nature, the cosmos, magic and alchemy, Montreal-based Ajram also mines her psyche for images that tell a story. “I started taking self-portraits when I was 13, as inspired by a beautiful German girl that used to do the same. I would take my most emotionally charged portraits of myself during times in my life in which I felt some extreme emotional imbalance.”

Ajram continues to feature often in her shots. “With professional models, there is sometimes a lack of connection between the subject and the mood I am trying to portray in a shot. If it’s a portrait that’s truly meaningful to me, I’ll use myself as a model. No one knows what you want creatively more than yourself.” Her process is part technique, part happy accident. “Having no one behind the camera creates an intuitive element of the random that I enjoy discovering once the shot is taken.” With her signature ethereal aesthetic catapulting her work to acclaim, she is beginning to enjoy collaborations with designers such as Grimes. It is easy to see why the fashion-conscious are drawn to Ajram, whose lithe frame and haunting face give an aura of renaissance romance, modern gothic and just a pinch of Japanese schoolgirl. Her fashion shots evoke Annie Liebovitz’ fairy tale series;

Ajram’s models seem “in character” rather than merely “dressed.” Still, fashion photography in Montreal presents fresh challenges. “It’s so cold and gray so often in Montreal that it’s difficult to create successful shoots. With my last shoot I was outside with the model for maybe 30 minutes – I didn’t even shoot a full roll of film because she was so cold. It’s completely understandable. It was minus 30 degrees Celsius outside!” For the time being, Ajram is the mistress of her realm, balancing a growing cult following with the pursuit of her undergraduate degree. “Studying can often be a source of inspiration, especially with different streams of film, literature and art constantly being discovered. One blogger shares the weirdest and wildest cassette tapes from Africa Awesome Tapes from Africa is, without a doubt, buy-me-a-plane-ticket awesome. Brian Shimkovitz, a New York-based cassette junkie, started the blog to share the tapes he picked up on student trips and a Fulbright scholarship to Africa. His first find was some “mysterious and wonderful” music by Ata Kak in Cape Coast, Ghana. “I had no idea what it was, but I became obsessed with it. And so many people who read the blog have become big fans as well.” Drop by awesometapes.com today and you can freely download anything from Sufi music from

Burkina Faso to “glittery and glammed out Manding pop from Guinea.” Shimkovitz posts each song, and often the whole tape, along with its original killer kitsch cover and his own stoner-like commentary: “This tape gets the award for wily, sinewy and swirly lo-fi keyboard tone of the year.” Now a record label, Awesome Tapes from Africa released La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 3, a 1983 tape by Malian singer Nâ Hawa Doumbia last year, on vinyl, CD, mp3 and, naturally, limited edition cassette. Shimkovitz left behind his nine-to-five job to devote himself fully to running

the label, trading his desk as a music publicist for DJ gigs across Europe and America. “I am so stoked to not be working in an office anymore,” says Shimkovitz, who DJs using the original cassette tapes, rather than CDs or mp3s, and likes playing to “open-minded crowds in bizarre warehouses in weird parts of town. Charbel Bouez snaps intriguing shots of Lebanon’s remote regions Charbel Bouez’s first major exhibit of his photography is, appropriately, entitled “Audace” (English translation: daring, bold, audacious). Although the word accurately represents the breadth and depth of his photographs – of nature, the environment, landscapes and portraits – it’s also a true reflection of the man behind the shutter. The word came up when he was talking about his photos with a major sponsor of his exhibit. As Bouez recounts it, “He told me what I was doing was audacious.” It’s not necessarily the act of clicking away that renders his work daring. Rather, it’s the situations and locations he pursues before finding that perfect combination of subject, light, angle, inspiration: climbing mountains, hiking down steep valleys and exposing himself to the often unpredictable and harsh elements to get that perfect shot. And he manages to capture the intensity of his subjects, even in black and white. Gossip No. 18

As any amateur photographer knows, accurately depicting a subject in color photographs is generally less complicated. With black and white, the texture, tonal contrast, shape, form and lighting has to be just right. Although Bouez has been passionate about photography since he picked up his first camera in his early teens, it was his love of nature, of exploring his surroundings, that led the 28-year-old to begin taking photos. Initially, he wasn’t thinking of photography as anything more than a hobby. He already had (and still has) a full-time career working in corporate communications. In the beginning, when he would return from hiking in some unexplored corner of Lebanon, or from a trip to discover another country’s unchart-

ed regions, he regularly posted his photographs, or his “visual communication,” as he calls them, on his Facebook page. “I became more confident. I traveled a lot, took lots of photos and began to show more and more of them. The comments I got made me realize that my photos were good.” Bouez’s photos also served to show the Lebanese a part of the country they didn’t know existed. “Most people don’t know this country very well,” he says. “They were amazed by the shots I took and always asked whether they were of places in Lebanon.” One day, he even got a phone call from an ad agency. “They had seen some of my photos and asked for directions to one of the sites as they wanted to do a photo shoot there.” “Audace” is on view until April 9 at The Venue in the Beirut Souks.

tor, and last year you launched a jewelry collection on Yoox.com. Is there anything else you dream of doing? I want to design a line of handbags, but that’s still a secret. I also just signed a contract with Eyebobs, an eyewear brand that’s beautiful and affordable at the same time. 9 What is, in your opinion, the ultimate faux pas in beauty? Applying too much makeup and powder, especially when you’re old: it highlights the wrinkles. And also, too much green or blue eye shadow: if it’s not applied properly or if you have wrinkly eyelids, you will end up looking like a turtle.

A regular night of bar-hopping between Hamra and Gemmayze, followed by an overhyped “underground” party, have become the nightlife equivalent of skinny jeans; a well-loved staple, but shouldn’t we be aiming for something a little more daring? There have been a few recent attempts to give those skinny-jean-Saturdays a bit of flair. Creative options such as Beirut’s first silent dinner party at Zico House (think The Artist but with hummus), zero-technology night at EM Chill (where music, cell phones and even electricity were banned for the evening) and the Gemmayze bar that controversially invited the public to dress up as “Sinkara or Milenga” for a domestic worker-themed night (the less said about that PR monstrosity, the better) are a step in a more risqué direction, but it’s time to take it even further.

Get this: now you can buy clothes and accessories made of concrete Concrete, the material you associate with industrial-chic countertops and suburban sidewalks, has amazing properties. Just ask Katalin and Andras Ivanka, the founders of Ivanka Studio and Concrete Works. They’ve just released a line of accessories made from their proprietary lightweight concrete concoction. These aren’t mere readymades, but rather ready-to-wear, completely flexible and even stylish in a post-apocalyptic, film noir way. It was a roundabout route to concrete couture. Katalin and Andras went on holiday to Canada and wound up working with a landscape architect. They witnessed the surprising versatility of concrete and took to their garage in Hungary to experiment with lighter, brighter formulations. Beginning with kitchen units, the duo were soon evolving their design process to incorporate home decor. The mad scientists then turned their attention to fashion. They experimented with combining con-

crete with nontraditional materials. Enter the Genesis collection, which the designers describe as “…where real high performance concrete meets leather to create a sequence of clutch handbags.” To make it all the more surreal, Anna Szabo, an intern at Ivanka, designed a complementary line of concrete charms in the shape of various vital organs. The quest to create clothing that emulated concrete had many reporters, critics and fashionistas doing a double take. While Ivanka does not specify the unique ingredients of this “new textile,” it is soft and wearable, but looks like a masterfully modeled sculpture you might find in an art installation or a contemporary museum’s garden. The designers have penned a love letter to concrete, in which they hailed the material’s versatility that “will open the gates of creative expression and will ensure a multitude of collections in our future together.” Ivanka’s future in fashion looks rock solid.

Nail art is spring’s coolest beauty trend First London’s premier “it” girl Alexa Chung, then stateside wild-child Rihanna and now Kate Bosworth. It’s official, nail art is having a bit of a moment. Starting on the super-cool streets of East London and rising into the ranks of an exhibition dedicated purely to nail design – this trend demands you to channel your inner creativity. The movement started a couple of years ago in 2010 when magazine stylist Sharmadean Reid was unsatisfied by the nail bars on offer in her neighborhood of Dalston. “They just weren’t any cool and creative designs on offer. I got pretty

frustrated, so I decided to just open my own nail salon.” A year later WAH nails opened its doors.

Forget cupcakes. Doughnuts are all the rage this year A cold, wet, so-very-Seattle day. I’m wandering the stalls of Pike Place, the waterfront public market, when I see the guy. Or, really, the cart in front of the guy. He’s hawking doughnuts, but not those pristine circles you see at chains. These babies barely outsize a Ring Pop. And, like the guy dishing them out, they look hot. They were. I bit through the sweet fluffy nothingness and saw my Nana frying cream puffs in her orange-and-avocado kitchen. She shook the fried dough balls in a bag of powdered sugar and cinnamon before displaying them on her pokerthemed serving tray. Full house. Doughnuts stand as top contenders for the trendiest sweets of 2012. Can cops’ standby carbs kick cupcakes to the curb? James Beard thinks so. On his foodie blog, he shares, “These irresistible Gossip No. 18

What makes a doughnut a doughnut? Some points to consider:

Beirut-born Radwan Ghazi Moumneh has been instrumental in shaping Montreal’s indie music scene When Radwan Ghazi Moumneh was sent to an all-boy’s boarding school in the tony Westmount neighborhood of Montreal at age 15, he was out of place. The young Lebanese student wasn’t familiar with peanut butter and other local specialties, and he listened to obscure punk bands with skulls on their tape covers while others played hockey. Eventually he met other outcasts and started playing covers of songs by The Misfits, a New Jersey punk band, and Sonic Youth, a New York noise band. “At the school talent show,” he says, “my band’s loud, messy show was censored.” This marked the beginning of a long, rebellious road for the young guitar player. “I loved breaking expectations,” says the softspoken, lithe 34-year-old, who was born in Zokak el Blatt in Beirut and grew up in Oman during the Lebanese Civil War.

Later, after attending recording school, Moumneh had to take several random jobs – including one as a bike courier. He became acquainted with young indie bands. Montreal’s affordable rents and large lofts were attracting talent from around Canada and the United States, who got together to experiment with new sounds, migrating organically toward the working class neighborhood of Mile-End. Rising bands included mythical experimental band Godspeed You! Black Emperor and post-punk band Silver Mount Zion. One day, during a friend’s gig, Moumneh met the owner of a studio and started producing records. Moumneh eventually opened his own Montreal recording studio, Hotel to Tango, with three partners – two of whom were members of Godspeed and the other of Arcade Fire. There

he has produced records, among others, for French pop band Pas Chic Chic, French singer-songwriter Yann Perreau, Parisian romantic pop band Altr and garage/electronic band We Are Wolves. A lover of traditional Arabic music, Moumneh also has his own project, Jerusalem in My Heart, in which he experiments with Middle Eastern music and culture. He plays the buzuk, sometimes sings old Sufi songs, shows experimental 16-millimeter films and works with other musicians to raise awareness of Arabic culture. “It’s a mash of things,” he says. “It’s about my ideas on how I see my place as an Arab living in North America, being in a scene where there are virtually no Arabs.” It seems that the young punk has remained romantic at heart. Jack White Blunderbuss When The White Stripes officially disbanded last year, the ex-front man immediately immersed himself in a series of projects, including work with The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs and Wanda Jackson, but audiences were hungry for more. They’ve followed his knockout performances on Saturday Night Live, which featured the surprisingly mellow, soulful lead single “Love Interruption” (with Ruby Amanfu sharing vocals) and the badass “Sixteen Saltines,” effectively stealing the show from guest host Lindsay Lohan. The rest of Blunderbuss is a jewel, shifting from bluesy vocals to hard rocking numbers, underscoring White’s claim that the music is “my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas.” PLAYLIST The Shins Port of Morrow Fans have been waiting since 2007 for another release by this Portland band, but the follow-up only has one remaining musician from the original lineup, singer-songwriter James Mercer. While the polished pop sound of the lead single “Simple Song” may surprise some fans, the music has the same flashes of sweetness that made the first incarnation of the band famous.

Nudity “It’s difficult to appear nude in one of your first films. I don’t want the public to expect to see me undress in everything I intend to do next! At the same time, Martha’s character is so disoriented that she’s not even aware of people looking at her. She has no real concept of what she’s doing. My job is to make my character as credible as possible, and I think Martha’s nudity in the film is crucial to better understand her disorientation and the innocence that was stolen from her.” Maturity “Most people are shocked that I was born in 1989. I have a pretty chubby face. When I was younger, I had the impression that I was taken a bit too seriously because of my determination to become a comedian. The writer/director of cult favorites Metropolitan, Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco is back – as is his distinctive “whit.” Here, a group of female friends attending a guy-centric, grungy East Coast college attempt to shake things up by brightening the depressing atmosphere with musical dance and doughnuts. Greta Gerwig plays ringleader Violet in this dramedy.

It’s made up of a series of short comedy segments, shot by more than 10 directors and a ginormous A-list cast, including: Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Uma Thurman, Hugh Jackman and more. Tying the shorts together is a search for the most subversive/banned movie ever made – Movie 43. The hunters are two teenage stoners and an egghead 11-year-old who discover tons of great films along the way.

Like most toddlers, Oscar is playful and utterly adorable. His playground? The gorgeous Ugandan rainforest. All is going swimmingly – with a doting mother and loving family – until an unfriendly band of chimps enter Oscar’s territory, leaving him orphaned. Luckily for Oscar (and viewers of this documentary), the camera catches the rest of the story, as an unexpected ally takes Oscar under his wing.

The setting: Victorian England. The problem: hysteria in women. The cure: orgasm. Yes, this film is about the invention of the vibrator. And it’s a romantic comedy. . What made you want to make the switch from

singing to acting? There was no “switch” really. Even though I’d been professionally pursuing music before acting, I was always a performer and always knew I wanted to be an actress from an early age. If you ask my parents, they’d say I’ve been an actress my whole life. I was very dramatic as a child.

. What was it like touring with Justin Bieber when

you were a part of The Stunners?

The Bieber tour was pretty unbelievable. Before, during and even now, I still can’t comprehend the gravity of that whole experience. I mean, we played 20 sold-out shows to about 12,000 to 23,000 people! We had such a great time. It was like being at summer camp, only you’re with four of your close girlfriends, and you live on a bus that travels all over the United States. And, of course, at summer camp there aren’t thousands of fans wanting to take pictures with you. Justin’s fans are really great, so supportive of him, and surprisingly really supportive of us. You’d think they’d see us as competition, but they were just thankful for a fun show, which is all we wanted to provide anyway! 3

. How did you land the role of Laurel on The

Lying Game? I’d been working a lot with The Stunners, writing and recording songs to pitch to radio for a

second single. Somehow I managed to also go to my auditions, and I think it was early November 2010 when I got a call from my agent to read for Laurel. I actually didn’t even read the script before going into my first audition, after which they called me back to test for the show. I had two tests, one for the studio and the last for the network. I felt really connected to Laurel the minute I read the sides. I reverted back to my 16-year-old self and somehow convinced everyone that I was right for the part.

4 What do you like to do for fun? I really enjoy going to dance. I’ve been a dancer since I was seven, so I still go to ballet classes when I can. I’ve also started to take West African dance classes, which are so much fun! I also love yoga, jogging around the lake or hiking. I try to see movies when I can and love hanging out with my friends. London has launched the first ever Sundance London music and film festival. This is the British version of America’s famed Sundance Festival.

Held annually in Palm Beach, Sunfest is one of Florida’s largest waterfront music and art festivals. The Fray and the All American Rejects will play.
