WELCOME Welcome to our Christmas card and gift guide. We’ve really enjoyed putting together this year’s range of cards and gifts for you. There are some new and exclusive choices as well as some well-loved favourites, all of which have been chosen for their excellent quality and value for money. At Christmas, time spent with the people you love is precious. For the children at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) who are too ill to go home this Christmas, that time feels even more precious. Every day, 618 seriously ill children from across the UK arrive at GOSH for specialist care and treatment. Every day, the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs that could change the lives of thousands of children – children like Ben. In December 2015, at only 17 months old, Ben came down with what seemed to be a cold. But after a few days, it became clear he wasn’t his usual self. He quickly became very ill. He was unresponsive and couldn’t wake up. And when he was taken to the local hospital he had a seizure. The doctor called GOSH for advice and then GOSH sent an ambulance to collect him. After two hours in intensive care the doctors told his mum Viki that Ben had meningitis.
When Ben first woke up from an induced coma, the meningitis infection had left him blind, deaf and with uncontrolled limb movements. Viki spent Christmas on GOSH’s neurology ward as the medical team fought to control the infection. Now age four, Ben’s sight is getting much better and, together with his twin brother James, he has designed a Christmas card for us (see opposite). You can read more about Ben’s story on page 17. This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to give seriously ill children the chance of a better future. MEET GOSH PATIENT BEN AND HIS FAMILY We introduced GOSH patient Ben, his twin brother James and mum Viki on page two of this guide. Here Viki tells us about Ben contracting meningitis and the ongoing treatment and care the family have received at GOSH: “Before Ben got sick, he had just been walking for a month and had about ten words. Once the infection was under control, they woke Ben up and that’s when we found out how much he had changed. The most striking difference was that he couldn’t see anything. We also didn’t know if he had any hearing. He was crying, and he couldn’t see. It was really distressing.
“When Ben came out of the coma, we were told that the damage to his brain had caused him to develop cerebral palsy – a movement disorder that affects things like his ability to control his muscles and his speech, vision, and hearing. He was a child I didn’t recognise, and I had to keep reminding myself that he was the same little boy.
communicate verbally, which has been great for his relationship with James too. They’ve grown so much closer. As soon as James gets up in the morning, he runs straight into Ben’s room to have a chat. The pair celebrated their fourth birthday recently and Ben got a trampoline. James enjoys bouncing him up and down on it to see him giggle.
“After 6 months, there were a few little twitches and I tried not to get my hopes up, and then he gave me a huge smile. It made all the difference. Ben’s vision has also started to return. While he wears glasses, his vision is quite good. Though, he’s still profoundly deaf.
“Ben receives ongoing support from GOSH, who are really the reason we still have him. Ben sees his neurologist less often because his condition is stable, but we meet with the speech and language, audio and cochlear teams every few months. They continue to be the driving force behind his development and support. The teams give me and his school lots of ideas that we take away and implement together.”
