Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff Continues to Build On A Legacy

By Grayson Moore Photos courtesy of Kayla Madonna

Since 2005, the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff has provided a national showcase for HBCU football, music, and culture. The annual college football game, owned and operated by ESPN Events, has found a long-term home in Atlanta after previous stints in Birmingham, Orlando, and on campus sites. The move provided an early-season counterpart to the postseason Cricket Celebration Bowl, which has crowned the HBCU football national champion in Atlanta since 2015. “It was a no-brainer to relocate the MEAC/ SWAC Challenge to Atlanta after the initial success of the Celebration Bowl,” said John Grant, Executive Director of both events. “Atlanta is the epicenter of black culture as well as the geographic center of both conferences. Georgia State University and the Atlanta Airport District have been first-class partners and the event continues to grow each year.”

began playing at Center Parc Stadium in 2017, and the MEAC/SWAC Challenge followed a year later in 2018. Since then, the stadium has increased its football cachet even more, becoming the host site for the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state championship games.

The first step was to find a suitable host venue, and Georgia State University’s Center Parc Stadium emerged immediately. The stadium, formerly known as Turner Field, was built ahead of the 1996 Olympic Games and was home to the Atlanta Braves until 2016. Soon after, Georgia State took ownership of the facility and converted it for football use. The Panthers

HBCU football fans responded well to the MEAC/SWAC Challenge’s new home in Atlanta. The 2018 crowd of 10,274 was the highest since 2013, but that was just the beginning of an evolution for the event. The 2019 matchup between Bethune-Cookman and Jackson State hosted a sold out crowd of 23,333 on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

MEAC/SWAC Challenge Crowd

Some fans had to be turned away at the gates due to high demand for tickets. It was clear that the MEAC/SWAC Challenge was making its mark in Atlanta, and it did not take long for corporate sponsors to jump in. In 2020, despite cancellations due to the COVID pandemic, Cricket Wireless signed a three-year title sponsorship agreement for both the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and Celebration Bowl. Both events provide an opportunity to Cricket to introduce their brand to HBCU students, alumni and fans. Other major brands have followed as major sponsors, including Coca-Coca, Aflac, Allstate, McDonald’s, US Army, and Truist. While the sold out 2019 event was immensely successful, there was still room for growth. In early 2021, ESPN announced that the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge would move up one week on the calendar to “Week 0.” The college football season typically begins on Labor Day Weekend, but the NCAA allows a few exceptions for games to be played a week earlier. One of these exceptions is for FCS (formerly Division I-AA) games that are nationally televised. While the MEAC/SWAC Challenge was already televised on ESPN2, this move allowed for the game to shift to ESPN, which usually sees higher viewership. Also, this shift allowed for the event to be played on a Saturday evening instead of a Sunday afternoon, further enhancing the experience for fans and the participating schools. The move paid dividends immediately. ESPN’s college football road show, College GameDay Presented by The Home Depot, decided to add an additional show to their calendar and broadcasted live from Center Parc Stadium the morning of the game. However, that was not all; ESPN’s First Take and ABC’s Good Morning America also got in on the action, providing an even bigger spotlight for the participating conferences, schools, coaches, players and bands. This spotlight had added importance as the game, played between the MEAC’s North Carolina Central and the SWAC’s Alcorn State, was the first football game for most of the players Continued on page 16

MEAC/SWAC action

and coaches since 2019, as both schools sat out 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. TV viewers responded to the increased coverage, with the game averaging over 1 million viewers in the new primetime slot on ESPN. That number represents the second largest audience for a regular season FCS game in history, narrowly trailing the 2010 MEAC/SWAC Challenge matchup between Delaware State and Southern. HBCU fans in the Atlanta area responded as well, with the game drawing over 15,000 people to Center Parc Stadium. The slogan of the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge kickoff is “Building on a Legacy,” which pays homage to all of the players, coaches and fans that have built HBCU football and culture into what it is today. Over time, the MEAC/

Challenge Kickoff Continued from page 11 SWAC Challenge has built its own legacy as well. The list of event alumni who went on to play in the NFL is long, including quarterback Tavaris Jackson (Alabama State – 2005),

running back Tarik Cohen (North Carolina A&T – 2014) and linebacker Darius Leonard (South Carolina State – 2017), who earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2018.

NCCU Celebration 2021

The legacy will continue on Saturday, August 27, when the MEAC’s Howard University meets the SWAC’s Alabama State University in the 2022 Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge KickOff. It will be Howard’s first ever appearance in the event, providing a national platform for one of the nation’s most prominent HBCUs. Both conferences will have a stated goal of not only starting their seasons in Atlanta, but also finishing them in Atlanta on December 17 at the Cricket Celebration Bowl. On that day, the MEAC and SWAC champions will meet on at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the HBCU national champion will be crowned. SPIN ME RIGHT ‘ROUND. Spin the District. Three weekends of cycling fun. Written by Wayne Whitesides - Photography by Dashing Images & Jeremy Spencer

“You look like you’re havin’ fun. Open up your lovin’ arms. Watch out, here I come. You spin me right ‘round, baby, right ‘round, baby, right ‘round. ” - Lyrics from Dead or Alive, 1985

Created initially to bring awareness and an economic boost through tourism, Spin has evolved to be much more than that. However, it has attracted thousands of participants and fans from 36 states and 21 countries since being introduced in 2018 - minus a year off from Covid - which has indeed worked to promote the three communities. More so, however, and the byproduct of creating such a global event is the diversity that comes with it. Participants from Columbia, Chile, Slovenia, Poland, South Africa, and Malaysia compete next to riders from Georgia, Texas, New York, Minnesota, and Oregon, for example, blending harmoniously in a big pot of tasty cultural stew; right down to the event announcers keeping you apprised of the race proceedings in both English

and Spanish. The events are also a melting pot of abilities - while the pros steal the show - the events bring young and old, seasoned veterans to riders who are just starting to compete in a variety of different cycling styles. And, once you throw in artist markets, bicycle expos, games, music, and food trucks slinging gastro masterpieces from all over the globe, there really is something for everyone. The next Spin the District event will be on October 22nd in Union City. The Spin the District Union City Fondo and Gravel Grind combine road and gravel cycling disciplines ranging from a 12-mile family ride all the way up to one of the most demanding and challenging cycling events in the south - the 126-mile gravel Toughskin Open. In addition, there will also be a 30, 60, and 100-mile road and a 60-mile gravel event to ensure there is something for everyone. You can find out more about how they’re Spinning ‘round all the cycling love as well as register for the Union City Fondo and Gravel Grind by visiting the Spin the District website www.spinthedistrict.com

SCAN FOR DETAILS

Every spring and fall, in the communities of Hapeville, College Park, and Union City, cyclists are welcomed with lovin’ arms to spin ‘round, ‘round. They come from far and wide. They gather up their families, friends, and teammates. They arrive by car, camper, plane, touring bus, you name it, to participate in Spin the District, a multidiscipline, cross-cultural, community-building, cycling experience that is not to be missed.

Atlanta Trails

urban redevelopment program - The Beltline—a combination of mixed-use trails, affordable housing, public art, greenspace, and workforce development. The Beltline is quickly establishing itself as the social hub of Atlanta, with new housing, restaurants, breweries, shopping, and even concert venues popping up almost monthly. Check out their monthly calendar to take advantage of bike tours, running clubs, aerobic classes, study groups, and even a Lantern The Silver Comet is Atlanta’s most prominent trail, a Parade. www.beltline.org/events/ 61-mile rails-to-trails system developed by the PATH Foundation starting in 1998. The Silver Comet gets Atlanta currently ranks 42 in bicycle infrastructure, a one-point gain from the previous year. However, its name from the luxury streamliner that traveled daily from Washington, D.C. to Birmingham. Today cyclists, walkers, and skaters alike can enjoy the same luxury provided back then on a modern, buttery smooth concrete trail that starts in Smryna and ends at the Georgia/Alabama state line. If you want, you can extend your trip to over 100 miles with the inclusion of Alabama’s Chief Ladiga trail system that will take you all the way to Anniston. So, if you’re feeling a little crazy - ok, a lot crazy - go for a double century and up your status with your friends to “living legend”. For most people, however, the Silver Comet is the perfect recipe of smooth, uncongested trails, with very few hills, set in a beautiful, wooded canopy, ideal for first dates and family fun. www. silvercometga.com If you’re looking for trails in Atlanta, you’re in luck; we have them in all shapes, sizes, and types. So, whether you want to go for a bike ride, walk, run, or stroll from eatery to bar to ice cream shop, Atlanta has just what you need. Traillink.com lists 73 trails covering 417 miles of hard-surface, mixed-use trails in Metro Atlanta - we’ll save the over 100-miles of mountain bike trails for another article.

The list also includes the city’s most ambitious 38 ATL - Your Guide to Atlanta and the Airport Area

Trails Continued from page 38 with giant projects in the planning and development stages, this number will undoubtedly change quickly. The AeroATL Greenway Plan, for example, has identified 59 priority projects around the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport that will include a direct path to the airport from Atlanta. Some AeroATL projects are already underway, including model miles completed in East Point and Hapeville. When started, the Chattahoochee RiverLands project will span a whopping seven counties and 19 cities. It will include over 80-miles of mixed-use trails plus 18,000 acres of greenspace where Atlanteans and visitors alike will be able to ride, hike, fish, paddle, and enjoy Georgia’s most famous river. Check out www.aeroatl. org/special-projects and www.chattahoocheeriverlands.com to read more. Until that time, enjoy some of our other favorites: Phoenix Trail - College Park. It’s a 1.5-mile rails-totrails adjacent to the airport that includes a cooling tunnel on those Hotlanta days and is a welcome retreat from your hotel room.

Arabia Mountain Trail - Lithonia. A 19.1 Mile trail system through the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area that meanders through DavidsonArabia Nature Preserve and Panola Mountain State Park. You can easily extend your time in either park to include over 30-miles of hiking, walking, and running trails through wooded valleys, exposed

granite outcroppings, grassy lakes, wetlands, creek crossings, and a few historic ruins. While extremely family-friendly, it does contain a few more hills than your typical PATH trail so bring along some extra water and an energy bar to keep everyone fueled up and hydrated. www.arabiaalliance.org/trail-maps Stone Mountain Trail - Atlanta. This 18.4 trail system was the PATH Foundation’s first trail, created for the 1996 Olympic Games to connect venues from Georgia Tech to Stone Mountain. It’s now Atlanta’s most used trail starting at Centennial Olympic Park and traveling through Freedom Park, the neighborhoods of Old Fourth Ward, Little Five Points, Candler Park, Lake Claire, Decatur, Clarkston, and ending at Stone Mountain Village. This system is a true tour-de-force, hitting some of Atlanta’s best areas. There are plenty of parks and pocket parks along the way, making it the perfect picnic day trip. Or stop and any of the numerous eateries along the way. We recommend starting at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, where you can explore the fantastic grounds of the library while still having easy access to The King Center, Fernbank Museum, Centennial Olympic Park, Old Fourth Ward Skatepark, and the Beltline. www.pathfoundation. org/stone-mountain-trail Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry; Atlanta has plenty of bike rentals too. The easiest is to use a bike-share program, like Relay, where you can pick up a bicycle for a fee using their app at any bike share docking station and return it to the same or another location. Additional dockless bike and scooter options from Bird, Lime, and Spin, are available. Check their apps for stations close by your area. Or rent bikes for a day or longer. In Atlanta, check out The Bike Barn, just off the Beltline. If you’re on the Southside of town near the airport, head over to Outback Bikes Hapeville hub for a well-stocked fleet of over 100 bike rentals ranging from mountain, road, and e-bikes. Or, if you’re heading for a day to explore the Silver Comet, both Smyrna bikes and Comet Trail Cycles can provide you with all the gear you could need. For more rental details, go to the Atlanta Bicycle Coalitions website: www.atlantabike.org/rentals

Real Estate Atlanta’s Real Estate Market is Growing Atlanta’s residential real estate market is changingfrom millennials to empty nesters, many are looking to put down roots, not only in the suburbs but in urban areas as well. Mild climate, accessibility to a world-class airport, diverse culture & lifestyle choices, sports, job opportunities and an attractive cost of living make the ATL Airport Area the place to live, work and play. William Hughes with Keller Williams Realty, Atlanta Partners will listen to your real estate wants and needs-always ready to help you find the best options whether it is your first home purchase or you want to change your lifestyle. Let Wings Financial help you finance a new home or refinance your current one-they have flexible mortgage options, low competitive rates, lower closing costs and exceptional personal service to assist you in financing your “dream home”. They can also help you prepare with home buying or home selling seminars featuring knowledgeable real estate professionals.

Commercial & Industrial Development New hotels, a thriving film industry, ATLNext (a multi-billion dollar capital improvement project at the world’s most traveled airport), businesses moving their headquarters & facilities, employees looking for available housing-all this has created a development explosion in the ATL Airport Area. Haven Realty International can help you analyze P & L statements, lend advice on how to maximize gains and make recommendations of investment properties to assist you in finding residential and commercial real estate for sale or lease throughout the Greater Atlanta area. With this explosion, people are looking for ways to coordinate and support efforts to enhance the perception of the area.
