The ATL Airport District is not just a flight hub; it is also an art hub! From steel artists to screen printers, learn more about some of the talented artists that call the District home.

Maceo Rogers is East Point’s Economic Development Director. He is also a Black Belt in martial arts, a father/husband, and a talented artist. When asked how he balances his busy schedule, Maceo is quick to laugh and say he makes sure to “eat his Wheaties.” A Georgia native, Maceo did not have a lot of art supplies growing up, but he did have an abundance of dirt and clay all around him. He began using dirt to create art and his yard became his canvas. “The texture is rough and crude, but [dirt] creates a multitude of shades,” explained Maceo. In fact, he was commissioned by the Science and Technology Museum of Atlanta to create a mural and diorama for an exhibit of the Mars Explorer. He and his friends dug up clay that he then used to carve out craters and crevices meant to resemble the planet. Today, he is inspired by the experiences he lives and what happens around him. A recent piece that sticks out to him is simply called “Hi.” It features a woman looking up and smiling as if to say “hi”. “During the pandemic, most people were withdrawn, protective, and maintained their distance. They were not willing to engage in conversation,” said Maceo. That was hard for him because he enjoys talking to people. Therefore, the simple encounter with the subject of “Hi” brought Maceo a sense of jubilation and connection he had not experienced during the pan-

College Park artist, Ashley Bella, has always been drawn to the arts. Growing up, Ashley was an athlete but decided that she was better at creating art. She oscillated between music and theater before identifying visual art as her preferred outlet. Ashley knew she wanted to become an entrepreneur and major in art; however, family pressure swayed her to change her college major. Before completing her undergraduate degree at Georgia State University

demic. Maceo strongly believes that art is closely tied to economic development. He hopes that East Point continues to attract artists that will add to East Point’s beauty and cause people to stop and think. “Art engages the soul and mind of the viewer. It can inspire and make someone think. Art can help people imagine possibilities they may not have otherwise,” expressed Maceo. He would like the arts to improve quality of living for all the citizens of East Point and surrounding areas.

to use traditional canvas; I wanted to use what was real to me in my life that I could access and source,” explained Jennifer. As the daughter of a commercial contractor and now wife to another commercial con tractor, steel felt like the natural choice. “If you can transfer images to glass and paper and wood, why not steel,” said Jennifer. However, perfecting the process and using it in a new way was not easy at the beginning. “It was trial and error,” said Jennifer. After shedding a few tears of frustration and getting help from an art student in the middle of an art store, Jennifer was able to sell 40 pieces at a coffee shop in Decatur on her first attempt. She has learned a lot since then. “I would tell myself to just keep doing what I’m doing and not create based on trends,” advised Jennifer. Each piece that Jennifer creates is one of a kind. “I don’t create for everyone; I create for someone,” explained Jennifer. When someone steps into her art tent, the pieces spark conversation and stir emotions. She will notice people connecting to her art. “I’m sad that I won’t be able to go to all the places I want to go to, but my art will. When I pass, my son may go somewhere in the world and see my work there,” expressed Jennifer. Jennifer believes that her art is her gift to the world. “You’ve got to love [art] to keep doing it. It’s expensive, scary,

and majoring in art, Ashley started getting involved in the community. She became an advocate for mental health and started fighting against sex trafficking. Ashley realized she could utilize her love of art to help victims of abuse, so she took the steps to get licensed in art therapy. The women she helped encouraged her to start creating her own art again. A year later, Ashley quit her job and hosted a paint party with the last $50 she had. This was the beginning of ArtzyBella studio. Ashley did not charge for attendance to her paint party and used the experience as a sort of focus group. The paint party also led to Ashley getting mural requests. To day, Ashley continues to paint murals and host paint parties. She is also building an app (currently in the fundraising stage) to make art therapy accessible to all. Despite appearances on Forbes and other major publications/networks, Ashley remains closely tied to her community. She wants to create jobs for other creatives and strives to tap into the local public art commission. “I want to help cities develop strategies that celebrate the talent in their own neighborhoods,” said Ashley. As for herself, Ashley hopes that next year she can build her own body of work. She wants to visually capture the story of black women in the South and inspire young people to “shoot for the stars.” “I didn’t allow anything that I went through make me dream small,” shared Ashley. She encourages aspiring artists to leverage their own network and to do art any way they can. “Accept that until people see what actually comes of your craft, they may not believe in you. Do it anyway,” encourages Ashley.

Atlanta and surrounding areas began reaching out to her. Though most of her clients already have designs in mind, Nicole has designed apparel like an anniversary t-shirt for Your Pie pizza shop. She is also heavily involved in the Sherpa community that supports triathletes. She designs Sherpa shirts and other apparel for races. Screen-printing has changed a lot. The screen-printing technology has improved and screen printers can do more with ink. Nicole finds that the screen-printing community is a collaborative one and that they are quick to help each other troubleshoot. Though the market may become saturated, Nicole differentiates herself through her customer service skills. “A lot of clients have to pick up their apparel, but I deliver to offer convenience,” explained Nicole. She loves relation ships and being collaborative with clients. A recent project she collaborated on was a crushed velvet screen-print she made as a wedding gift for a client. Nicole even strolls through local thrift stores in her spare time and looks at t-shirt designs to perfect her own. In the next 5 years, Nicole hopes to help small businesses get off the ground. She would love to see herself become the go-to-place for startup Checkbusinesses.outwww.silkscreengarage.com for your next screen-print need.

John Christian is a mural artist and the creator of the Georgia Mural Trail. The Georgia Mural Trail is the first trail of its kind in the United States and John Christian has more murals in more states than, perhaps, any other individual artist. Before painting murals, John was in the theater world and had a number of theaters in different cities. John likes the permanence of murals. “I want murals to last forever and they need several layers to show depth like a 7-layer cake,” explained John. Murals will fade if the proper steps are not taken. Thus, John makes sure to seal the wall, add base coats, layer multiple coats of paint, and top his murals off with a protective seal ant. John Christian considers himself an art historian and enjoys creating murals that tell the story of the city they are in. He especially likes putting murals in small communities that may not have access to art funding. “250 people came to my mural ribbon cut ting in Sylvania and were so excited,” shared John. When he started the Georgia Mural Trail, he would

She hopes that Hapeville will live up to the billboard that says “Hapeville a Home for the Arts” by facilitating and fostering a culture of art appreciation and art buying. She would love to see more art markets, studios, art camps, and more.

of his work is featured in the Library of Congress and he has people that reach out to him looking for his murals. He recalls a time when a woman from his church overhead ladies from out of town discussing one of his murals; she called him and asked him to tell them where it was so they could visit it. He hopes that people will begin to respect other artists more and support the arts. John would love to see an increase in the national art budget. “Georgia’s art budget is about $4 per person which is similar to others states. Europe’s budget is closer to $20 per person,” shared John. He would love to see unused military equipment repurposed as studio space for artists. “You have to fight for the arts. I’ve been fight ing for the arts my whole life,” said John. Small business, local merchants, family-owned restaurants. Neighbors whose names you actually know. These things all help to make communities more livable.

It’s the small things that add more life!

City of

The City of South Fulton offers its residents something that we’re all learning, once again, to appreciate—quality of life. The big things—malls, franchises, big box chain stores— are not necessarily the things that make communities more livable. Little things often do that. As travel returns, the essence of experiencing new things is not only found in far off places. Exploring South Fulton and supporting local businesses can be fun and plays a key role in sustaining the community and showcasing it as a viable destination.
