Now, when she steps out on stage—with the Boston Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, or New York City Opera, among others—her voice reveals the beauty and timeless intensity of opera. The New York Times describes her as “vocally striking,” and the Houston Chronicle says she “sets the stage ablaze with her vocal and dramatic pyrotechnics.” A mezzo-soprano, Heltzel honed her craft as a music major at Gordon, and she rounded out her skills amidst the broader liberal arts curriculum. At Gordon, she says, “there was a focus on being excellent at what you do because it honors God, and shares with the rest of the world the beauty and power of his truth,” inspiring her to “be worthy of a wider world.”
