Google INK Ambassadors Network With a quest to give wings to an idea that, could change the lives of a billion, bring out hidden potential and could be the answer for a better tomorrow, Google and INK, have collaborated on various initiatives over the last four years, and have now come together with a combined vision to get the next billion Online. Nearly a billion people in India lack access to the Internet or do not understand the benefits of going Online. Thus, this was one initiative that needed immediate action. The synergies between Google and INK fused together under the program to ‘Get the Next Billion Online’. The objective is to try different experiments in limited areas in a city, town and village and gain insights into factors that drive behaviors and how that can be molded to lead people Online. The final outcome is to create a blueprint that will be taken to progressive governments of the country and other partners to help scale and sustain this project. Over the last decade a number of attempts have been made to induce more users of the Internet, with attempts ranging from failures to quasi-successes to pioneering ideas that were too early for the market or existing technology; with projects ranging from Government funded to GovernmentCorporate partnerships. However, it is still to be ascertained if a plan of this magnitude can be achieved without the active participation and motivation of the targeted public user-community themselves, first. The approach that the team is taking follows the framework of- Empathize, Define, Ideate, Test, Prototype. The Google – INK Ambassadors Network began by conducting lots of experiments to get feedback from users on understanding the nuances and factors that will get the next billion Online in India. Our own experiments with those we have engaged with show that connecting individuals and communities to the Internet enables access to information, can increase household income and provide greater social freedom. The Google – INK Ambassadors Network are directing those we engage with to make use of the Internet as a tool to make their own lives and the lives of their communities productive and prosperous. We aim to form a blueprint to create an Online, self-sustaining, content-generating ecosystem that leverages the power of the Internet & related tools.

Project Mission Beginning of 2012, the Economic times carried a proud article - it read “India achieves a 10.2% Internet penetration rate”. It goes on to list out figures and percentages of how Asia is below the world average and our country, with the second largest population has a percentage Internet reach, slightly more than the average shoe size of its people.

Not exactly the land of big feet, this is certainly not something we can take pride in and, unsurprisingly, there is an astounding disparity in awareness about and knowledge of the Internet.

Lack of infrastructure, awareness, outreach and misnomers about the Internet are some of the key problems, these trickle down to several details converging with various complex, social, cultural and economic factors make this a challenge, a hurdle that we together will surmount. Getting the next billion Online, our goal and vision in the coming months is to join hands with like minded people, dynamic organizations working in the socio-education and development sector and to partner with infrastructure developers and facilitators to start a momentum of ideas, facilitate development of local content and workable and scalable working models, with well researched curricula designed to equip the new user with knowledge to explore further and develop competence in using the world wide web.

Our goal • To extend the reach of the Internet to communities that lack awareness and infrastructure for the same. • To work with organizations in the socio-education and development sector. • To facilitate creation of local content.

E-nabling curriculum Welcome to E-nabling, a curriculum designed by the Google - INK Ambassadors Network to get Indian citizens who have never used the Internet Online.

This curriculum is targeted at first time users who may have never used a computer. We run through the basics of the peripherals of a computer before launching into tasks such as completing a google search, creating an email account and using the Internet as a key communication tool.

We first tested this curriculum at BBMP Girls School and Jeevan Bheema Nagar school in Bangalore. Based upon the feedback from the students and our own learnings and insights the curriculum has been appended and refined to its current version.

The ten day curriculum can be used by anyone whether you are a teacher with a class of 60 students to an independent adult learner. If you are a complete novice our advice is to run through the curriculum in chronological order as each day builds upon the learnings of the last.

Each day we run through the teaching methods, provide a basic checklist of the equipment you will need, the learning objectives for the day, the Do’s and Don’ts from our own learnings and a page to record your insights and feedback.

In order to help us improve the curriculum your feedback is essential. Please do take the time to note down your own insights, the aspects of the curriculum that worked well and did not as well as your own teaching tips and Do’s and Don’ts.

6

Ecosystem Map To start with our curriculum aims at being a self evolving system which would eventually help facilitators from different organisations working together on sharing their feedback and insights on these progressive experiments. Volunteers, students and facilitators will form the backbone of this feedback system which will help the partner organisations as well as other interested parties to gain an understanding of the current trends and create their own strategies towards addressing the issues faced by them in attracting their target audience. It would enable our overall goal of bringing together organisations which work on improving Internet literacy or might be a IT infrastructure provider who in turn can use these insights to better their approach towards the market and understand the dynamics of a specific ecosystem that they would like to target.

Basic Checklist Computers/laptops with Internet connections and web cams. The Internet connection could be data cards, Wifi modem, broadband connections. A projector is required for an effective class. Students retain better when they can see and experience things. Plan the session such that it is high energy, content based and does not have long breaks. For a fruitful session spend some time planning and gathering thoughts. A good session should last about 40-45 mins at max. Facilitators should be equipped with basic knowledge of Internet. Make sure you carry the gadgets and printouts without fail everyday. Reach out to an NBO ambassador for any queries , help and support. 9

Feedback Methods The NBO team appreciates your efforts and commitment to take this curriculum forward in your organisation and networks. It would also help us take this curriculum to the next stage, by providing your valuable insights and feedback. Understanding our audience is the essence of the project. Hence, we strongly propagate the importance of understanding and empathizing with students and their socio-economic background.

For this purpose, we have created an easy feedback system. The various methods by which you can send us feedback are as given below:

1. Feedback from Students This would be an Online survey, the students would fill as a part of the e-nabling curriculum.

2. Daily feedback The insights are extremely important and they could also be anything unique you observe. We will send a Post-Session-Form to fill as part of the daily feedback.

3. Sustainability Survey We would like to collaborate on making the ecosystem sustainable and customize the sessions to help you get there. This would be done by your Google INK contact after the 5th day of the e-nabling sessions.

10

Importance of feedback The e-nabling session is like an open source software. It only gets better with everyones` contribution. This e-nabling session requires your absolute commitment so that it becomes THE TOOL used to bring a billion people Online as regular users. We request your assurance in taking this curriculum forward and for FEEDBACK to better it. With your feedback and suggestions, we can together create a tutorial that has high 1. Robustness 2. Quality 2. Customization 3. Freedom 4. Flexibility. 5. Interoperability 6. Audit-ability

THE 10-DAY E-NABLING CURRICULUM DAY 1

15

DAY-1 Pre-Assessment Objective - Student to take the pre-assessment (with little or no help) Prerequisite logistics - Laptops/computers, dongles, projector, screen Introduction to new material (5 mins)

Note 1 This lesson needs minimum 1 facilitator and 1 volunteer to engage the kids (in case the assessment is conducted batch-wise).

Instructions for Facilitator Gather all the students and get them seated. Based on how you want to conduct the assessment group the students (preferably one student per system for the assessment). In case the number of students is more than the number of systems, bunch out the students and conduct the assessment in cycles/batches.

Facilitator to talk to students “ Hello everyone. (Small introduction of self and/or team/partner)Today we begin our 10 day program about the Internet. Do you know how beneficial the web can be for students? And the amount of information one can gather from the web? Well we are here to help you learn all the basics about the Internet. But before we can help you, we’d like it if you could help us help you better. You’d have to show us a little bit of what you already know about the Internet. Mind you this is not an exam or a test or anything scary like that. Please relax, you will just be helping us!” Tip 2 If said right, help

Group Activity (10 mins)

us help acts as a fantastic ice-breaker.

The group activity is only in case you are conducting the assessment in batches, here are a few suggestions on how to engage the others while one batch takes the assessment. • • •

16

Note 2 Volunteer is supposed to conduct this Seat the students in a semicircle and showcase 2-3 INKtalks in regional language session in a way that the and talk to the students about what they learnt from the videos assessment takers aren’t Gather the students and play games wherein the students are to silently act out distracted.

different characters, perspectives etc Showcase videos like funtheory.com (Volkswagen), animation videos etc. and talk to them about career options, science in everyday life, what they enjoy doing and their dream jobs/hobbies Gather the students in groups of 2/3 and hand each one a chart paper, asking them to draw a map/timeline of their life until now and share their life story with their partners. Initially everyone gets about 5 mins to draw out their timelines (can be as a flow chart, a picture map or just incidences listed down with year/ time references). Next one by one everyone in the group gets about 5 mins to share. Once everyone is done - each one takes 2 mins to write down where they want to get to in the future and how they’d get there and then take turns sharing within their groups.

Note 3 Please enforce the fact that each group will have a trust circle and out of respect for one another everyone will hear each other without judging and commit to not share the stories elsewhere

Tip 4 Volunteer please note this might be an emotional session as you have to urge students to share everything

End Activity (10 mins) Facilitator to seat one student per system for the pre-assessment checklist. The facilitator can read out questions one by one every 2-3 mins and ask the students to accomplish the task. In case any student needs help, the facilitator can guide them (for eg. if a student asks the spelling of google translate or if a student reaches google.com and doesn’t know how to get to youtube/google translate/google images)

1 Note 4 For DAY 1, the end activity will be the PRE ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST

Print out one assessment sheet per student and ask them to fill in their details as soon as they are seated. The students then wait for the facilitator to announce the question and try and execute. As and when a student accomplishes a task or has a doubt they are supposed to raise their hand without making any noises to grab the facilitator’s attention. Once the facilitator has seen a completed activity or has helped a student, he is supposed to make it out immediately on the student’s sheet.

Marking scheme •

In case a student has accomplished an activity on his own, mark 1 on the assessment sheet and in the excel sheet under the particular task column against the said student’s name In case a student has accomplished an activity with a little guidance or help, mark 0.5 on the assessment sheet and in the excel sheet under the particular task column against the said student’s name Tip 5 It would help if you In case a student has not been able to accomplish a task at all, mark a zero.

CLOSING ( 2 mins) “Students thank you for helping us! All of you were brilliant today! I’m glad all of you tried to complete each activity on the list today. From tomorrow onwards we will teach you exactly how to use the net and accomplish each of the activities and much more. I hope you all had fun and found the net interesting because from tomorrow onwards we are going to try and learn the fun way. Remember the class rules!”

come up with a separate marking scheme for the student’s sheet (for eg. :) for 1, a star for 0.5 and a & sign for a 0. Students get scared when they see numbers on their sheet as they generally fear tests/ exams.

Tip 6 Keep reiterating the class rooms during the class. Towards the end get different students to read out the rules, in a sing song manner or clap after every rule, or enact every rule - it’s fun and helps enforce the rules

For example - www.google.com. Then we are taken to the google.com page. Here in the search bar we type out what we want (for eg. pizza) and we click on enter. Now see we get a page full of information and to go to anything we like we can go to the link and press left click on the mouse. Students I have a question for you. Do I have to reopen the browser every time I want to make a new search? No! We just have to open a new tab! (Show them the new tab button)”

Note 1 The students are to start using rapid typing as soon as they settle in, giving the facilitator time to set up and get ready. Tip 1 Pre-Downloading a typing software (eg. rapid typing) will help streamline the session. Note 2 The session requires a minimum of 1 facilitator and 1 volunteer Note 5 As soon as you start this section, the students should all be facing you and you need to hold their attention. (Use points/ acknowledgments to credit good behavior and establish your class rules at this point) Tip 3 The facilitator can explain about a web browser and give a few examples. You can create a chart with different browser symbols to help students remember.

DAY-10 Post Assessment Note 1 Minimum 1 facilitator and 1 volunteer needed

Objective - Student to take the post-assessment (with little or no help) Prerequisite logistics - Laptops/computers, dongles, projector, screen Introduction to new material (5 mins) Instructions for Facilitator -

Note 2 Make sure you reach 30-45 mins in advance to set up the lab space.

Gather all the students and get them seated. Based on how you want to conduct the assessment group the students (preferably one student per system for the assessment). In case the number of students is more than the number of systems, bunch out the students and conduct the assessment in cycles/batches.

Facilitator to talk to students - “ Hello everyone. Today we are going to try and showcase everything we have learnt until now. It’s going to be fun as the activities are very interesting and we are going to try and finish them quickly. Mind you this is not an exam or a test or anything scary like that. Please relax, because if you all are worried then the activity will be no fun!” Group Activity (10 mins) The group activity is only in case you are conducting the assessment in batches, here are a few suggestions on how to engage the others while one batch takes the assessment. Play revision games like Chinese whispers of steps to complete a certain activity. Memory game on how to create/share an Online document for example. Get the students to meditate Ask them for their favorite activity and get them to explain a shortcut they like to use

End Activity (10 mins) Facilitator to seat one student per system for the pre-assessment checklist. The facilitator can read out questions one by one every 2-3 mins and ask the students to accomplish the task. In case any student needs help, the facilitator can guide them (for eg. if a student asks the spelling of google translate or if a student reaches google.com and doesn’t know how to get to youtube/google translate/google images) Print out one assessment sheet per student and ask them to fill in their details as soon as they are seated. The students then wait for the facilitator to announce the question and try and execute. As and when a student accomplishes a task or has a doubt they are supposed to raise

88

Tip 1 After the initial address, facilitator to split the students. The ones taking the assessment first to head to the lab space. The others led by the volunteer to a different location.

BEYOND THE CURRICULUM

95

Key Learning points Benefits of Volunteering: Volunteering of any kind brings people together, builds new relationships and facilitates exchange of knowledge and skills. Impacting individuals, starting one at a time, is like a spark that sets a fire; it spreads far and wide thereby impacting the community at large. It is a two-way street, benefiting the giver, if not more than, as much as the receiver. Volunteering to teach, is akin to lighting a candle that brings life in an otherwise dark room. A little introspection, on why this is necessary in our country, the second largest population, will lead one to understand the essence of this project. An Internet revolution will enable over a billion people to access information ( which is much needed to bridge economic and social gaps in society), act as a springboard for new ideas and hidden talent and create a better tomorrow.

Tips to help you volunteer better -

1) Always ask Questions This helps you get a better understanding of the job and helps make sure you enjoy the experience as you judge is based on the skills required, alignment with your goals and the time you want to spend.

2) Know the expectations Be sure to know the expectations and the commitment required and make sure you feel comfortable working towards achieving the targets.

3) Be the change Don’t be afraid to make changes in the plans and your targets if need be. Feel free to communicate and modify the curriculum as per your specific target audience.

4) Enjoy the process At all times make sure you’re having fun! Enjoy the process, don’t be burdened by it. Ask yourself constantly “Am I enjoying this?”, If the answer is in the negative, discuss with your peers, point out the changes that’ll help and march ahead. Remember everything is easy to execute when the process is fun!

96

Benefits for partners and volunteers Key benefits for partners Partnering with us has several benefits to your organization in terms of adding value to your programs, being the first to initiate a better tomorrow and to collaborate with several others working is this space. • You will be the first of the organizations in the socio-education and development sector to start an Internet revolution in the country. • Expansion in your outreach in the form of institutions, similar organizations and potential partners. • Your work with us will be featured on our website • You will be one of the few organizations to have a program that is unique in content and utility. • You will be the pioneers in your ecosystem to educate and empower people with much needed skills to excel today.

Volunteer benefits Volunteering with our project in getting the next billion Online will give you experience, immense working knowledge and a chance to explore your ideas and a platform to experiment and implement the same.

• You will be a part of the team of evangelists who can influence local communities and inspire them to use the Internet and improve their lives. • You would have permanently altered the face of your ecosystem creating an excitement and a visible difference. • Your work would have changed the lives of people from students, to parents, to farmers, to housewives to entrepreneurs to the government.

• You will also see how your ideas and execution prowess will feed into a large national initiative. 97

Tips on Sustainability 1. For any initiative/project to have successful impact, it is imperative to understand the humancentric motivation of participants in the particular project eco-system. 2. Setting up an Online, self-sustaining, content-generating eco-system requires a clear messaging for all participating stakeholders in the community, to motivate them towards contributing towards the initiative’s success. 3. Some of the basic requirements for such an initiative include: a. Internet-enabled computers/laptops. b. Internet connection facility with (ideally) a wireless (wifi) router. c. A computer-community center that allows access to learners, with cooling facilities (fans, a/c, etc.). d. Two dedicated ‘teachers’ to train the new batches of learners. e. A white-board with some colour marker-pens. 4. To make this initiative successful, it will help to attract sponsorship for the above-mentioned requirements from the following possible sponsors: a. Local IT/Telecom retail stores (such as the local Reliance Digital or Tata Croma store). b. The local Municipal corporator. c. Local Government or Private School, willing to accommodate such community lessons, after school hours. d. Local Resident Welfare Associations. e. Local charities (such as Rotary/Lions Club, etc.). 5. For the local IT/Retail stores, you recommend the option for them to advertise within the community computer center, in return for sponsoring the IT hardware and Internet connectivity. The stories such as Reliance Digital or Tata Croma can greatly benefit from increased visibility of actual product-users, while ensuring effective marketing of various offers to the entire local community. 6. For the school (Government or Private), you may recommend that a fully-furnished room be provided along with power supply & back-up, in return for professional training to students. Additionally, the school’s reputation and social-goodwill will greatly increase through its contribution to such an initiative. 7. The trainers for subsequent batches of the Internet training should typically picked-out of the current batch that is completing the curriculum. 8. It will help to remain in constant touch with the NBO team member who is facilitating the curriculum roll-out, apart from sharing regular feedback. 9. For the video-stories collection project, please refer to the specific guidelines. However, to ensure proper recording for these stories, you may work-out a deal with the local IT/Telecom retailer to provide a (relatively sound-proof) section of the store to record parts of the storyinterviews. The store’s branding can be shown in the video, and since all these videos will be published Online, it translates to free-advertising for the store’s brand.
