DIVA ON A

DIME

When working with brides that are trying to save money but have the taste of a Trump, we often have to reel them in reminding them constantly just how many things cost. There are undoubtedly many ways to be a Diva on a dime, and it all starts with flexibility. I like to suggest that instead of spending a hundred and fifty dollars on all 20 centerpieces let’s consider using the high/low method. You can spend significantly less on ten tables by using a small arrangement in a distinctive vase and in season flowers. Lighting is another area where brides can save; instead of a full room wash consider softer lighting effects. For that fashionable bride that is dying to wear a designer gown, listen close. Most of the bridal salons offer what they call a sample sale; twice a year they open their doors and slash the prices by more than fifty percent. These gowns are usually either from last season or a discontinued style, so they are getting rid of the sample gown in the store. Divas on a dime don’t stress, with these tips you’ll have a fabulous wedding with less money spent.

The GOODs Celebrity Fashion Column By Kimberly Kimmel

It’s bridal season and weddings are in. Ever since you were a little girl you’ve waited for your wedding day to come and now that it’s available, you want to make it everything you dreamed it could be. With a little bit of effort, an eye for the latest trends and a big vision, you can look just as fabulous as any celebrity bride or groom on your special day. All it takes is a bit of imagination, determination and the coolest fashions, hairstyle and make-up around. We’ll explore some of the latest trends along with where you can find what you need to help you look fabulous and beautiful on your special day.

Who’s Out and About? One couple who have recently become engaged is Andy Samberg and Joanna Newsom. Samberg, formerly with Saturday Night Live and who will star in an upcoming Fox comedy, and Newsom, a singersongwriter are glowing with excitement. The scoop is Samberg was crushing on Newsom before the two laid eyes on each other. Sometimes you just know when they are THE ONE. Vincent Kartheiser who plays Pete Campbell on Mad Men became engaged to former Gilmore Girls star Alexis Bledel. She was a guest star on the show, and as Hollywood romances go, they met, fell in love, and are soon to be married. LeBron James and his fiancée Savannah Brinson have set a date. They will have a fall wedding in San Diego. Dating since high school, they currently have two sons together.

What’s In, What’s Out Wedding gown trends seem to change seasonally. For this wedding season, five new trends are in: high necklines, low backs, pastel colors, long sheer sleeves, and the screen siren look. Demure décolletage in the front and sexy bare backs are in. It’s all about the contrast. The pure white, uptight Victorian look is out. Reds, soft pinks and pale blues are making their debut. Sheer cotton candy pink and pale peaches are edging their way up front in between the refrigerator whites and creams. Sheer sleeves are also the latest trend. From shoulder to wrist a transparent wisp of chiffon, tulle or lace brings a touch of elegance to your bare backed gown. Combine elegance and sexiness and you have the next latest trend—the screen siren. Class and distinction are creeping in Ala Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn and even Jean Harlow. Add in the sexiness of Marilyn Monroe and you have the full package. Glossy hair, lips and the come-hither look are all the rage. This look will ensure that you look perfect on your wedding day as your style states class, diva, sultry and demure all rolled into one.

Upcoming Trends We knew they’d soon be a fashion trend. Combine your two faves—the comfort of the tennis shoe and the height of a three inch high heel and voila! You get the new high heel wedge sneakers. Celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez and Eva Mendes have been seen in these casual and fun versions of high heels. These tall wedge tennis shoes come in all the stylish designs you could possibly imagine while giving your legs the added length of a traditional high heel platform shoe. Even Vera Wang, the goddess of bridal gowns has jumped on the high heel wedge sneaker trend with her own line. Leather, cloth, and every color under the rainbow is available. The style, patterns, and colors of these fun shoes are endless.

Traditional vs. Trendy By Noelle Tolentino The Posh Knot

You’re standing in the middle of a boutique, with hundreds of white gowns surrounding you. There are lace, beads, and glitter in all shapes and sizes everywhere you look. How do you choose whether to go for a more traditional look or a trendy look for your wedding day? While each style can be beautiful in its own way, it all depends on which suits YOUR personality most and the type of statement you want to make with your dress. Here are some of the great things about each:

Traditional For this style, think of Kate Middleton’s dress from the royal wedding. »» Has more of a classy/classic look »» Many generations can appreciate it, even grandma will love it »» Can be conservative »» Neutral/muted colors

Trendy »» Can be as unique as you can imagine »» Select from some of the most up-to-date fashion trends »» Bold colors and accents In reality, the only con with either traditional or trendy is that if it doesn’t match your personality, it won’t work. So stop thinking about what other people will think of your dress, after all it’s your momentous day and you should wear what suits you best.

How to

transition an outfit from

Some of us wish, at least once in a while, that we could take our closets with us wherever we go at a moment’s notice. Not like throwing everything we own in our car, but merely folding our closets up into little pocketsized boxes that would expand into their full-size like magic when needed. Sounds ideal, no? Well sadly, that technology hasn’t even been thought of yet, and when you live a rather busy day life with a long hour work day or strenuous classes, your social life has the ability to suffer. Having the time to travel home and figure out what you’re going to wear after a long day does not always happen, so being prepared at the start of the day is key. Knowing what couple of items to have handy and how to alter your wardrobe in the slightest way can make a grand difference when transforming your day attire into a saucy night outfit.

day

At the start of the day when choosing what to wear, remember to keep it simple. Doing this will make it much easier to transition your ensemble from day to night. Carry this out by easily pairing a basic high-waisted skirt with a cute chiffon blouse. Another option is a pair of stylish twill skinny pants and a classic button up. Now a dress is the easiest transferable outfit, and the ultimate tip on keeping it simple would be to go with a black one. You honestly cannot go wrong with this article of clothing. It’s readily alterable and as we all know, black goes with almost anything. Now just because you’re keeping it simple does not mean it must be boring. With these clothing choices you can choose variations of color, fabric and design, to emit that Sleek it Out Dress by sense of style in the work place while still keeping Modcloth $49 your professionalism. Chiffon Appliqué Blouse by Mango $29

On My Ombre Skirt by Modcloth $28

Now that the work day is coming to its long awaited end, it’s time to step up your wardrobe. You can conquer this by simply applying a layer. A trendy blazer can make a world of difference for any outfit. It can class up or party down your accoutrement in an instant and is definitely a must have for any fashionista. With a blazer, this is your chance to add bold color to your outfit and make a statement. An edgy bomber or motorcycle jacket is another article of clothing one should consider for the switch into night gear. Getting a motorcycle jackets with studs, large lapels or even excess zippers are perfect for giving off that ready to rock vibe and naturally spice up your ensemble.

The final way to upgrading your attire is to accessorize. This is basically the icing on the cake in fashion terms. When at school or work, you can keep your accessorizing to a minimum, and this will allow you to amp it up when night comes. Items like a sparkly infinity scarf, fedora, bright colored clutch, skinny waist belt, or bib necklace can do wonders for your ensemble. To add some edginess, a chunky bracelet with studs or blinging bangles will absolutely do the trick. As for shoes,

sporting a nude pump or black pointed heel at the beginning of the day can easily transition into night wear. One can never go wrong with a nude pump, and if you do choose to change into a spicier shoe, bring a pair of strappy platform heels. Slapping on any accessories will give your wardrobe a step up, so don’t be afraid when choosing which to wear. Fashion is exciting, so remember, the transition from day to night wear can be as effortless and fun as you make it.

a fairytale locale Romantic Destination Wedding Locations

One of the most memorable and integral parts of any wedding is the location; it sets the tone of the entire ceremony, and the location will be a significant part of every wedding photograph. Whether you and your love prefer a sunny beach with the soothing sound of the waves breaking behind you, or a large wedding held in a foreign countryside, there are hundreds of unique spots for every couple if you take the time to find them. More and more couples are traveling each year to their favorite destinations to make their wedding dreams come true. Don’t settle for a subpar location because you do not know where to look; your fairytale wedding may be within reach with these five stunning destination wedding locations.

By Jessica Yacovelle of The Posh Knot

PARIS If a wedding in one of the most romantic cities in the world speaks to you, then Paris is the perfect destination. Filled with lights that sparkle in the night sky and picturesque monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, Paris is a romantic wonderland waiting to be explored. Marry on the Seine River at night in a private ceremony, or exchange your vows in one of Paris’ many large and decorated cathedrals. Serve champagne or red wine at the reception from other regions of France, and pair these with some of the delicious cakes that Parisian bakeries are known for. The museums and unique culture of Paris offer endless entertainment for any honeymooning couple. The stars will glisten overhead as the whole city becomes one romantic adventure for you to share with your love.

HAWAII There is a reason Hawaii is a well-known classic destination wedding location. With its clear waters and cool tropical breeze, these islands are filled with beautiful beaches ideal for a wedding. Whether you prefer the soft sandy beaches of Maui or the posh hotel resorts found on the main island, there is something for everyone at this picturesque paradise. Hawaii also offers an multitude of diverse activities

to make your honeymoon unforgettable, such as sailing, horseback-riding, hiking, or even helicopter rides. When the sun sets and lights the sky with red and gold hues that shimmer over the ocean, Hawaii is the perfect place to say “I do.”

LAS VEGAS For the couple who want something fun and unique, Las Vegas offers a myriad of opportunities. Marry in a small and wild themed chapel, or experience a grand wedding at one of the hundreds of resorts. Spring and Fall feature the best weather in this city, though the luxurious hotel pools more than make up for the summer heat. Your honeymoon will never have a dull moment with the casinos, museums, and spectacular shows that are available throughout the city. Walk down the Strip at night with your love to see the bright lights shine and sparkle in the warm air, or take a free shuttle from one entertainment venue to another. A Las Vegas wedding is always an unforgettable affair.

TUSCANY If a sophisticated, romantic wedding is more to your taste, Tuscany is the perfect region for your wedding. Whether you are drawn to Italy for the lavishly ordained cathedrals or for the rustic vineyards, Tuscany offers a

variety of romantic choices for every couple. The beautiful Italian countryside features spectacular green, grassy hills and antiquated architecture from the Italian Renaissance. The city of Florence is within Tuscany, and offers many museums, art galleries, and impressive historical monuments that are impossible to miss on your honeymoon through the Tuscany region. Paired with both the extraordinary wines that Tuscany produces every year and the delectable cuisine that accompanies them, a Tuscany wedding will always be filled with romance, elegance, and remarkable culture.

BERMUDA With pink sand and clear waters, these islands are a romantic alternative to a Hawaiian wedding that is only a few hours away from the East Coast of the United States. If you are interested in a quaint, calm, and secluded wedding, the Bermuda islands are the perfect destination. Featuring quiet golf courses, scuba diving, and botanical gardens, this location is filled with fun and relaxing activities for your honeymoon. The weather is best in the late winter, and the spring and resorts are ideal for small weddings. Get married facing the tranquil turquoise waters on a private beach ideal for you and your loved ones. ✻ www.thegoodsmag.co

how to survive

BRIDEZILLAS

1

The first thing people ask me when I tell them my profession as a wedding planner is, “Have you had any Bridezillas?” My answer is always the same—“No” with a slight chuckle! I think I chuckle because EVERYONE asks the same thing, but also because I think I have mastered the skill in catching a bride before she transforms into the infamous “Bridezilla”. There are a few things that all brides want-- to be heard, to feel like they are your ONLY client AND for their wedding day to be PERFECT! Piece of cake, piece of pie?! Not always, but since I (we) am the expert, I have to give them what they need and want and then cry, laugh and pull my hair behind closed doors. After almost 3 years in business, below is my formula for surviving the bride who looks like she is headed down Bridezilla street. Build Rapport with her support team— mothers, sisters, best friends. It is extremely difficult for a bride to get upset or hold a grudge with you if her family and friends love you! Get their phone numbers and touch base with them periodically. Every now and then, invite them to your upcoming bride meeting BEFORE the bride does!

2

Respond quickly to her when she reaches out to you. Be it phone, text or email, she needs to hear from you frequently and consistently, especially when an “urgent” matter comes up! If you are unable to respond (family emergency, travel), inform her of that at your earliest convenience. Along these same lines, over communicate—give her more information than she asked for and only hold back if she tells you she doesn’t need all the details.

3

Remind the bride GENTLY why you are the expert and that she hired you for that reason. Sometimes brides forget that this is not our first wedding. It’s okay to share previous successful weddings to encourage her that everything will work out as planned!

4

Respect her space & time. As the expert, it is your responsibility to respond as soon as possible, but please acknowledge the bride has a million things going on, so give her time in her responses and most certainly do not make her feel guilty if it takes her a few day.

5

Re-Read over her wedding details before bride meetings, so you are always fresh with her wedding details. Remember a bride wants to feel like they are your only client, so know her wedding like the back of your hand (even if you maybe the busiest planner around!)

These tips have helped me survive those nearing Bridezilla lane! Hope these are helpful and wishing you a successful and stress free summer! Peace and Blessings, Kadesha Carroll, Charisma Events & Consulting

event planner

The Posh Knot is a full-service event planning company that specializes in event planning, management and design. The Posh Knot was established in 2007 by best friends of 15 years, Johnique Woods and Cerita Burrell. Johnique recognized her passion for event planning in 2007 when she planned her own wedding in only three short weeks. In 2008, Cerita received her MBA from the University of Phoenix and discovered her calling for event planning while working in the non-profit sector specializing in gala fundraisers. Together, they are an unstoppable force, creating one memorable event after another. In 2012, Cerita decided to spread her wings to embark on new business ventures. However, having no intentions of leaving The Posh Knot behind, in mid-July Cerita launched The Posh Knot – Dallas. The Posh Knot is continuously at the forefront of wedding and event planning trends with their work featured in photo shoots for Munaluchi Bride magazine, The G.O.O.D.S. magazine and in popular wedding blogs such as Urban Style Wedding, Bridal Insider, and Love and Lavender. The Posh Knot ensures quality, elegance, attention to detail, and above all, unparalleled customer service—for The Posh Knot believes that no matter what your budget is all events should always be beautifully packaged, tied tightly with a Posh Knot.

Why hire a wedding planner?

1. Stress Less & Maximize Your Time

3. Enjoy Your Wedding!

Why stress about one of the most memorable days of your life? You should enjoy your special moment and not be weighed down by logistics, coordinating vendors, or any unforeseeable mishaps. Planners are professionals, who are not only meticulous to the will help your vision, and your dream, become a reality and since they are seasoned professionals, they know how to plan gorgeous weddings with a fraction of the time and effort.

Having a planner does not mean that you will be left out of the decision making. You are the star of this show, and what you say, goes. This wedding is your vision, the planner is just there to help make it happen. You can develop themes and details with your planner and not worry about putting everything together. You may include close friends or relatives who are willing to help you plan the wedding, which is great but this does not compare to a seasoned professional. Planners have networks and connections, as well as the ability to make everything run smoothly. Let your friends and family enjoy the wedding also! If you are hesitant to book a planner, many planners offer free consultations. You can meet the planner, see what they have to offer if this is a excellent fit, and make the decision. In addition, many planners provide a variety of services, so if you would like to plan, you can even just hire a planner for the wedding day. This means, on your big day, you can sleep better and feel calm and happy; knowing your planner is smoothing out any kinks and making your wedding everything you envisioned.

2. Save Money This may seem counter intuitive, but if you want to save money, invest in a planner. They have connections within the industry’s vendors, not to mention they will work stringently and strategically to maximize your budget. With the wedding trends moving towards DIY, there’s no doubt that a planner will be able to make your wedding unique and chic even while on a budget.

A Natural Girl in A Wedding World

An Taylor

So you’re a naturalista, and it’s your turn to jump that broom. While planning the dresses and venues, you have yet another problem, how to tame those normally wild vivacious curls. A wash-n-go is your thing and would be ideal but not quite wedding appropriate and your voluminous hair “I don’t care” styles are just a little to avante garde for such a sophisticated occasion. So how do you transform sass into wedding sheik style? SIMPLICITY. Never make complicated over complicated you this even is already full of requirements and time consuming projects so your hair should be one of the least stressful things. Here are a few tips that can help you look and feel elegant on that special day.

Don’t Delay

Let it Flow

Waiting until the day, can place pressure on you and those helping you achieve the look of a lifetime. Don’t wait to that day to determine which style you will go with. You know what looks fabulous on you and what he likes to see on you, try a different style’s at home. Wear them out in public to get your peer feedback and let them in on the hint that you’re playing with ideas. It doesn’t have to be to perfection save that for the big day.

If you have been going years with curls and you have been waiting for a perfect excuse to let it all flow, why not now. This is a once and a lifetime opportunity, and you will never get this moment again. Go for a Silk press, a silk press is similar to a traditional press, but it’s a much safer and healthier way to press your natural curls. It leaves your hair feeling light, silky and with exceptional body. There are no heavy oils used or waxes, and at any moment you can easily bounce back to that natural you.

Princess Pin Up Most natural girls love, love, love their natural curls and are opposed to adding any type of heat or pressure to it, so that doesn’t have to change just for one day. The great thing about a princess pin up is if you’re not expecting to wear an overbearing head piece you can dress the hair with a large flower accessory or a few small flower pieces. Using fresh flowers add a very distinctive goddess touch and refreshing scent.

BC (Big Chop) Beauty Making the decision do a BC on your wedding day is not dramatic and is a excellent way to embark on your new journey into martial life and natural heaven. A short cut does not mean you can’t still be flawless on this day it just means you followed the first rule to the mark SIMPLICITY. Nothing is simpler than cutting off all your hair and starting fresh and new. You will be surprised how many dropping jaws you will get as you strut your new look down the aisle. You may even convince your bridesmaids to take the leap with you and truly make it a day you will absolutely never forget. Now take a breath this moment is not about your hair.

trends

Entertainment & Nightlife Reception/After Party These days, couples are throwing out tradition and celebrating just how they want! A new trend is longer wedding receptions. A reception can be divided into three sections:

1. Cocktail hour, which means light refreshments and low key music. Picture lounges for guests to rest their feet, chat and mingle in a relaxed setting, and having fun in the photobooth.

2. Dinner hour, which includes most of the typical wedding events like throwing the bouquet and cutting the cake.

3. The after-party, which is where the bride, groom, and close friends (sorry no tired grandparents or babies) let loose and live it up. Besides the extended reception, couples are getting more creative by adding tarot card readers, fire eaters, belly dancers, and carnival games to make their wedding something guests won’t want to miss!

Entertainment & Nightlife Desserts/Food Drumroll please!! The wedding industry’s food of the year is... pork! and the alcohol for the year is... tequila! This year, we will see food in a more creative, and dare I say it, playful way. The going trend is to have weddings be more personal, unique, interactive and fun. This means having creative food and dessert stations like the s’mores bar seen below. Most of the food innovation will likely turn up with desserts, such as dessert bars, mini desserts, and even desserts by color. As you can tell, most of the foodspiration will be a play on childhood food favs—like ice cream sandwiches and mini pop tarts. In addition, there is a growing eco/green trend for weddings, which means that plenty of couples will be gravitating towards catering that is fresh and local. Why not swap out imported for regional wine? With that said, when looking for local caterers, why not try food trucks? More and more weddings are booking food trucks because they add a unique vibe to their wedding. What better way to make your wedding memorable than by adding personal touches to every detail, such as food—everyone’s favorite part of weddings!

Summer Shoes for Wedding Season As the season changes, the weather gets warmer and the flowers come into bloom. Love fills the air, and so do the words “I Do”. That’s right, it’s wedding season! When you’re a bride, you have a ton of different decisions to make, one of the most important being the dress, and of course, the shoes. The perfect shoe is key in this scenario, and the right pair can turn your wedding gown from good to great!

Badgley Mischka Goodie Peep-Toe Pump $245

A nice classic peep toe pump is oh so flattering for summer, so snagging a pair as a bride or for your bridesmaids would be ideal. Choosing a light pastel or white /ivory gives off a very fresh, springy feel. To vamp up the peep toe, go for a shoe with some “bling” or sparkle to it. Benjamin Adams Perry $418 I-Do Peep Toe Glitter Platform Pump $35

Adding on to the strappy shoe trend, one could add some flavor to their dress with a strappy heel. This type of shoe is very sexy, and choosing a heel with jewels or a shiny metallic exterior will make this shoe jewelry for your feet.

Touch Ups Katie Platform Sandal $75

One can also wear a strappy sandal. This is perfect for beach weddings. A gladiator sandal or any other sandal with a strappy, intricate, jeweled design is a great accent piece to a breezy seaside wedding dress. Pink Paradox London Heaven $76

Now if it is a formal wedding, don’t think you have to wear heels. If you’re not the heel wearing type, a flat will do. Flats can also be worn as just something to slip into as the night goes on. Donning a peep toe flat in white satin will look great with a wedding dress.

Satin Flat Heel Peep Toe with Rhinestone $54

Molly Side T-Strap Wedge Sandal $35

Jessica White Flat Heel Diamante $99

Wedges, one of the best shoes to wear for both beach and outdoor weddings. They give you nice footing on sand and soft soil while still emitting that air of style. With wedges, you can achieve a more casual look or go for a dressier feel. You can easily sport a jeweled and sparkled approach or rock a strappy, cork beach style.

To go along with a very elegant bridal gown, a sophisticated pointed toe heel is perfect. It’s classy and timeless, and you can choose from many different materials and variations.

Pink Paradox Cherish Wedged Heel $122

Peep toe booties are also very in during the spring months. Most are too casual or edgy to wear at a formal wedding so stick with lighter colors i.e. ivory and cream, as well as soft and delicate materials like lace.

Pink Paradox Honey Pointed Toe Heel $99

Glint Trio Laced Peep Toe Bootie $50

Christian Louboutin Decoltissimo Heel $625

Finding the perfect wedding shoe can be tough, so remember, wear a pair that accentuates your personality and dress. Find something you feel comfortable in and makes you look fantastic! www.thegoodsmag.co

STYLIST PROFILE

of BRAIDOLOGY with SHEMARIE

SheMarie learned to braid at the age of 12. Starting as something to do to pass time, and eventually was a great help to her sisters making sure their hair was styled routinely. As her skills improved, she began to provide hair braiding services for friends and their friends and families. Known for promoting hair growth with her “growing hands,” SheMarie has been in business primarily by word of mouth. She now operates under Braidology with SheMarie. Braidology with SheMarie is a home-based business that provides clients a private experience, as opposed to being on the open floor of a chatty salon. Some of her clients have severe scalp conditions that some may consider embarrassing this is when some clients request to be serviced discretely. Services provided include protective hair styling i.e. twostrand twist, French braids, twist outs etc., installation of hair extensions, basic and extensive hair braiding. Some factors SheMarie considers to be vital in the hair business are knowing how to provide a proper consultation to determine the most compatible style for the client; being able to provide a service that compliments the client without compromising the health of their hair; and educating the client on the what and why’s of the integrity of their hair. She feels that once clients get a clear understanding about how hair is structured and how it is affected by products and styling, sound decisions can be made that affect and condition the hair in positive ways. SheMarie also states that education is not only important but obviously a benefit to business, and that many people forget that hair acts and reacts to how it is nurtured and the lack thereof.

I never thought I would be able to say 15 years later, I have provided for my family with income made by braiding hair and installing hair extensions,” says San Diego native SheMarie.

FACEBOOK.COM/SHEMARIE.BRAIDOLOGY TWITTER.COM/BRAIDOLOGYSM @BRAIDOLOGYSM BRAIDOLOGYSM.BLOGSPOT.COM

At the age of 16, SheMarie drafted a sponsorship letter and passed it out to her church family asking for financial support to get her to Atlanta Georgia to participate in a Hair Braiding Seminar with Taliah Waajid in 2003. The letter got her to the seminar! She was able to learn new techniques and even improve her self-taught skills in addition to becoming a certified braider upon completing the training. Continuing on with graduating from the School of Creative and Performing Arts in 2003 she gained knowledge in the business management arena. Knowing that education is important she was able to immediately enroll in the San Diego City College Cosmetology Program in Fall of 2003, soon after completing the required hours she became a licensed cosmetologist in 2005. Holding on the dream of becoming a salon owner, she is taking the steps to do so effectively and efficiently. She wants to be a part of San Diego’s hair world that changes the expectations on what San Diego has to offer the billion dollar hair industry. You can expect to see Braidology with SheMarie doing big things in the years to come. âœť

BUNS, BRAIDS, AND BANGS Hot Spring Wedding Do’s for 2013 BY STYLIST JENNIFER D’ANN

Having the perfect hairstyle on your wedding day is just as vital as all the other 101 decisions a bride has to make. The right hairstyle can make your wedding gown stand out. Your wedding hairstyle not only affects how your wedding pictures will turn out, it affects how confident you are as you walk the aisle to in front of all your guest, and it also affects how close you will come to the perfect wedding look. To help select the perfect style, here are the current trends for this season.

Buns

Buns have made a tremendous comeback. Whether it is a sleek bun, or a messy bun, both can provide a sense of enhancement, and class to any bride. To help achieve this look with minimal frizz, and fly always, I recommend Moroccan oil.

Braids This newest trend is leaving its mark in the wedding world. Whether it’s a waterfall braid offering a fresh take on an up do or a fishtail braid giving the illusion or a side sweep, the braid is putting a new spin on the Boho chic and classic bride and more room to play. It can create the elegance of half up half down, or send the groom into a frenzy with the romantic side sweep, all achieved by braids. To help aid in control when wearing the braided look, I recommend Edge Tamer by KeraCare styling products.

Bangs

Although bangs are not a traditional bridal look, we are seeing more brides incorporate bangs into their wedding look. Since bangs tend to bring attention to ones face, it is essential to ensure your bangs encompass your overall look. Whether you choose a low up do, or a high one, the lovely bangs will add just the right touch for a feminine look. To help assure your bangs stay put, I recommend Bed Head’s Masterpiece hairspray. This hairspray will provide staying power on your hair without hardness or flakes. www.thegoodsmag.co

erfect dress, fabulous shoes and a every little to-die-for detail is looked after for your wedding; afterall it will be one of the most memorable, cherished days of your life! However, as the happy years pass and the flowers dry out, the party favors get packed away and your carefully selected hor d’ourves get forgotten, there is one thing that will still be evident in every cherished photo, video and, perhaps, set you up personally for a lifetime of happiness: your physical fitness! Brides to be need to not only look their best in the dress, but need to be a blushing-bride bombshell for the honeymoon and the joyous days after! Sadly, so many women crash diet, lose track of their goals, or let the stress of the event leech any health and fitness from them. Like any special event, though, with enough foresight and planning, you can attain and surpass your fitness goals. Here are some pointers to get you pointed on the correct path to fitness so you can be hot for the honeymoon!

Hydration and Vegetation Setting the stage for your healthy lifestyle is your nutritoin and hydration. Active women need a minimum of 80 ounces of water a day to keep muscles fuctioning and your skin clear of toxins and blemishes. Whether you are running around with back to back wedding errands, or hitting the pavement and putting some miles on your sneakers, it is essential to replenish your body with the fluids lost so your muscles can work and recover effectively. Aside from increasing your water intake, it also goes hand in hand with increasing your fiber intake. Now, this is not your mom’s fiber supplements I am talking about, but fiber from rich vegetable sources. Getting a minimum of 30 grams of fiber a day from one of the sources listed below ensures that your digestive tract stays on track. A healthy, active GI tract helps reduce belly-bulge by moving unwanted waste out of our system. Anther perk to increased fiber sources is feeling full and satieted on more nutrious rich, yet low in calorie, foods! Greens (collards, kale) Lima beans Mushrooms Pumpkin Peas (black-eyed peas, green peas)

Peppers Rhubarb Spinach Sweet Potatoes Apples Avocado

Bananas Berries (blueberies, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc.) Guava Kiwi

Orange Pears Prunes

A great way to jump start your cardio routine, and set your metabolic furnace a flame, is with a basic conditioning circuit. This is how I jump start my clients just starting their fitness journey with me, to get their heart strong and muscular endurance developed to the point we can really start doing some calorie-buringin damage! www.thegoodsmag.co

41

Conditioning Cardio Workout {Frequency 3+ times a week} Equipment needed: timer (an egg timer, stop watch or cell phone timer all work great!), jump rope (optional). Set your timer for 1-3 minutes for each round, depending and your current fitness level. Increase your length of time as your fitness increases! ROUND 1 Jump Rope Grab your rope, or invisible jump rope, and even if you mess up....keep going! Jump rope is great for balance, strengthens arms, core and calves. ROUND 2 Body Weight Squats Use a chair as a guide at first. Begin by sitting with your bottom at the edge of the chair, knees at 90 degree angel, feet about hip-width apart and toes facing forward. Stand up with a straight back, by pushing up through your heels, then sit back and tap your bottom on the edge of the chair. Keep going as fast as you can control the whole time. IMPORTANT NOTE: make sure your knees don’t push forward over your toes, make your booty work! ROUND 3 Jumping Jacks That’s right, good old-fashioned, P.E. style jumping jacks! Keep your posture up, abdominals engaged and focus forward. Go as fast as you can control. The

important part here is that you’re body is doing work, no matter what speed your fitness level is currently at! ROUND 4 Plank Exactly like it sounds, a “plank” is holding your body rigged, like a planks of wood, enganging to abdominals, glutes and arms. This can be done in either a full push-up position or a half push-up position (on your knees and hands, versus toes and hands like a full push-up position. I don’t believe in “girl” push-ups....they are half-ups!). Make sure you breath and keep your abs lifted as high as you can. Take 30 to 60 second breaks in between each round. Repeat this 3-5 times for a cardio boost that not only will sky-rocket your metabolic and calorie burn, but that will get your body moving! Our bodies were designed to dance, to hike trails, to walk on beaches, and to play at the park with our kids, so train your body to do so! This is the beginning of an exciting time for you in your new life ahead. I appreciate feedback and hearing about your own personal success story, so please never hesitate to contact me at www.facebook. com/CurveAppealFitness or email cassandralueck@ gmail.com

ylvia Jaimes is owner and designer of Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design, Local San Diego floral company that specialize in weddings and upscale events. Her involvement in weddings and special events happened by accident. Even though she always had a passion for the natural beauty of flowers and a sense of design she never thought this would be her profession. While attending Fashion Design and Merchandising school her childhood memories of her grandmother’s garden, home and events always decorated with flowers trigger something in her heart so she decided to get her hands dirty and went for a part time job at a local flower shop while she was in school. It was then when she realized that this was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life and in 2008 “Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design” was born. She is certified Floral Designer in San Diego and every year she attends workshops from the Flower School in New York and Floral Design Institute in Portland OR; Every time looking to enhance her expertise! She takes every job very seriously making sure every detail is never overlooked. Her work is creative, beautiful and the best product is used. With the coming of summer and all its colors and availability of flowers Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design advises is: to not forget the temperature. Make sure you assign one or two of your bridesmaids to be in charge of the bouquets. From the time the florist delivers the bouquets make sure you keep them refrigerated somewhere until it’s time to walk. Most locations will have refrigeration in the kitchen. When the photographer snaps away on something else besides the bouquets make sure you look for a cool area with shade. One last thing for the flirty brides that love flowers in their hair always look for flowers with a waxy texture such as orchids, plumeria or why not succulents since they are so popular right now. Sylvia Jaimes Floral Design with over 10 years of experience is a creator of exquisite floral events for those who appreciate beauty, design and a good sense of taste.

why you should hire a

pro makeup artist & hair stylist By Melissa Rae & Co.

I am sometimes surprised that brides don’t find it beneficial to have a pro do their hair and makeup on one of the most important and photographed days of their life. If you think about it, these photos will last you a lifetime. In the future, it is likely that your guests won’t remember what party favor you gave them, or what appetizer you served, but your images are permanent. They are a long lasting memento of your special day.

www.thegoodsmag.co

47

Which is why it is so important to ensure that you will look your best on camera. Have you ever noticed how hair and makeup genuinely do improve a person’s appearance in photos and on film? There is a reason you don’t often catch celebrities without theirs done. Granted, not everyone wants to look like they are wearing a lot of makeup or have every hair in its place. That is where it is essential to find a pro whose style you like. Be sure you are able to communicate your ideas across to them, and don’t be afraid to say it when you are not satisfied with something. Any true professional will not take your criticism personally, they are only trying to make you happy and accomplish what you are going for. How can you tell a professional from an amateur? Professional artists will have an extensive portfolio, will be able to answer all of your questions to your satisfaction, have a comprehensive price list, be well educated in their field, and if they have been in the area for a while they will also have a solid reputation. If you aren’t able to gather that from someone, you may want to keep looking. Be sure they have a written agreement with you, and take a deposit to reserve your date to ensure both parties are committed, and that you probably won’t have someone flake out on you at the last minute. Another benefit is that you are able to relax on your wedding day and enjoy some TLC with your bridesmaids and family members before you walk down the isle. If you still want to opt for doing your own hair and makeup, it would be a wise investment to get several makeup and hair lessons (a’la Kate Middleton) to be sure that your techniques are up to par, and that you have the proper tools, and know how to complete your desired look.

THE ONE?

Dress: Check Venue: Check Honeymoon Secured: Check Photographer: Ummm… Selecting the right photographer is one of the most crucial aspects of a wedding day. While wedding rehearsals help make the bridal party organized, once the Big Day happens, it happens. Knowing your photographer is capable of capturing your moments that will last a lifetime is an essential feeling every bride deserves to have. Anyone can take a picture; social media proves that. Snapshots on cell phones, iPads, digital cameras, and yes, even the trusty old faithful disposable camera. However, the dedication, skill, and hard work of a professional wedding photographer is what separates us from the handy-dandy “cell phone shooter.” A wedding photographer understands how vital it is to capture a perfect moment. Hugging an old friend, the jovial smiles shared when telling jokes, the always awkward “Toast to the Bride and Groom; ” memories that will last a lifetime.

www.thegoodsmag.co

53

Brides should feel comfortable with speaking to their photographer, and their level of professionalism. This builds report. There’s nothing like hearing a bride say, “My photographer…,” when speaking to a friend, or offering a referral. It assures us that a connection has been established, and not a business transaction. This kind of relationship means a photographer has taken the time to go above and beyond to make their wedding day memorable. I have comforted a frazzled bride, wiped several tears, poured a drink, and told innumerous jokes just to ensure that my brides truly have an stunning wedding day experience. I want my brides to know that I will be shooting her all day, and I want her to actually smile. After speaking to a photographer the bride should know that they are educated, skillful, creative, friendly, and well crafted for their job. The photographer must know their equipment, understand its limits, the lighting, what to do when the “perfect” lighting does not exist; it’s more than just a snap and click. Sometimes you have to see more than one photographer; sometimes it’s love at first sight. But like your marriage, you need to ensure you have picked that right one you want to create a lifetime of memories with. ✻

Esther Uri I had an absolutely blast working with this couple! After just speaking with them a few times via skype, I knew I had to help make their dreams come true! They are not only meant for each other and super cute, but we have something in common—they are fellow entrepreneurs! Esther & Uri married here in San Diego at the Bali Hai Restaurant, but they were eager to get home in Austin Texas, to launch their new coffee shop business— Velveteen Coffee House (I told you they were super cute)! With a determined DIY bride, we celebrated Christmas and just two days later celebrated their nuptials including decor elements that represented the bride’s Philippine culture, and of course their new found love and business (which they announced to family and friends for the first time on the reception floor!). With a stunning water view venue and fantastic vendors, we had the time of our lives and sent the newlyweds packing right before midnight!

What happens when you need a wedding gown in six weeks on a limited budget? For Danielle Marie Berg of D’Marie Couture, this crisis gave rise to a passion. Her solution, of course, was to make her own wedding gown out of some vintage lace curtains and a silk scarf. She had so much fun making it, that soon she began making gowns for friends and then for clients. What began in 2006 as an act of desperation grew into a small business: D’Marie Couture, based in San Diego, California. Today Danielle works with brides both locally and internationally to make each bride’s dream gown a reality. “I love working one on one with a bride to design a dress that is a true reflection of her personality. Each dress is so unique because each bride is unique. In addition to custom gowns, D’Marie Couture has a few collections of private label gowns that can be made to order. The first collection, “Arte Moderne” is a tribute to Danielle’s background in fine art and the artists who inspired her. For example, her “Cornelia” gown evokes Van Gogh’s Starry Night with swirls of horsehair, and “Helen” is inspired by Mucha’s iconic sirens and art nouveau patterns. The “Retrospective” collection draws inspiration from vintage designs and the style icons who wore them. “I’ve always wished I was born a century ago – I’m so fascinated with that era. When it comes to sewing, I’m a real dinosaur. I use a lot of classic couture techniques because they just don’t make them like they used to.” Her passion for old things is reflected in everything from her 1930’s singer sewing machine that she uses for most of her work, to the studio which occupies the front portion of a historic house in Point Loma. Inspired by her home state, the California collection is comprised of fun, casual gowns well suited to beach weddings. “Comfort and wearability are really important to me because I don’t think you should spend the happiest day of your life miserable because your dress is uncomfortable. only use natural fabrics such as silk and cotton, and my dresses are much lighter-weight than a typical wedding gown.” Most recently, Danielle is working on building a French inspired collection called “Mon Amour.” This collection features exquisite French laces and luxurious details in designs ranging from romantic to sophisticated and chic. Even the designs in her collection, however, are highly customizable, because each one is handmade to the bride’s exact measurements rather than generic sizes. When it comes to a business model, Danielle has never forgotten her DIY roots. “I’ve always joked about being a one woman sweat shop, but the truth is I love being involved in every aspect, from design, to pattern making, and the construction of the final dress. I think it’s this personal attention that sets me apart and attracts brides who want something different from the typical bridal salon experience. It’s not for everyone, but for brides who want to be involved in the process, it’s a wonderful collaboration.” “The best part about my job is seeing the smile on a bride’s face at the final fitting. I feel so privileged to be a part of such an important day in her life.” ✻

Luce Loft This styled shoot was inspired by my love for the color blue that was represented in the layout for People Magazine’s 2012 World’s Most Beautiful Woman featuring Beyonce Knowles. There were so many vintage elements I gushed in awe and went to work to develop a shoot with plenty of inspiration to mirror. It all came together once I found a budding new events venue the Luce Loft in Downtown San Diego which screams Vintage with an open palette. With layers of details that included unique furniture and vintage rentals from Lauren Sharon Vintage Shop, exquisite linens from A Perfect Table, a gorgeous mélange of dinnerware by Pow Wow Vintage Rentals, absolutely beautiful stationary by NicRoc Designs, Stunning couture bridal gowns from D’Marie Couture Bridal, the ever sweet birdcage veils that exude elegance in their simplicity were provided by D’Angelo Couture, not to mention the sweets tables provided by Wicked Spoon were not only beautiful in presentation but extremely delicious. The whole shoot came together to manifest this sense of natural beauty, serenity and love sent through the color blue. By using lemon yellow, various shades of blue, silver, gold and pops of berry red, I wanted to take a decidedly vintage with modern elements approach this shoot. Many of the vintage touches were provided by my 90 year old grandfather, such as the vintage ties he has had for over 50 years.

The Posh Knot and a few other wedding vendors including Amazing Photographer Julio Fonyat teamed up and put together this super fun Chevron and Color blocked themed Bridal Shower at the rooftop of Andaz Hotel in San Diego. The color scheme of the shoot is black and white with pops of fuchsia, gold and yellow. Sharon Mintz of Organic Elements stretched her imagination to the fullest by creating a chevron patterned floral runner for each table, in addition, to ultra-chic black wrapped sequin candle goblets. Stevi Auble of Hey, there Cupcake! created a super fun Colored Blocked cake including the color scheme with asymmetrical shapes. Pam of Cake, Ball, Love added her touch of Chevron by creating the Amazing Gold and Black cake pops (red velvet, which were super yummy). My absolute favorite is our version of the Charlie’s Angel Silhouette with the Chevron Gobo provided by Tim Altbaum Production in black and white with Amber up lighting. Overall we had such a blast creating this Inspiration Shoot. Nick Lawson of Ikonik Imagery captured the behind the scenes fun through video.

Sexiest Gift for your Groom

by Kimberlee West of The Boudoir Divas

www.thegoodsmag.co

121

Ready to give your groom a gift that will knock his socks off? In recent years, the boudoir photography trend has become incredibly popular among brides who want to do something extra sexy for their hubbyto-be. More and more wedding photographers are now starting to offer boudoir, and grooms across the country are being pleasantly surprised! Today, boudoir photography is sexy, classy, and edgy, and when a photographer knows how to utilize studio lighting and posing techniques specifically for this niche, the result can look like something out of the pages of a men’s magazine or a sexy lingerie catalogue! Can’t you just imagine your groom’s excitement as he opens a gift on the morning of your wedding day? Just think about it: he gets a knock at his door, and it’s your maid of honor arriving to deliver his groom’s gift. He receives a black box wrapped in bright pink ribbon, with a sweet hand-written note from his the love of his life, whom he is about to see walking down the aisle. He opens the box and the expression on his face changes from one of confusion to pure delight as he realizes, exactly, what is in his hands. As he flips through the pages of a gorgeous designer album, featuring hot photos of YOU, he will shake his head in amazement as a enormous smile spreads across his face. One bride put this experience in her own words, saying, “He absolutely LOVED the album, and it was SO much fun to surprise him on the day of our wedding! He told me this was the BEST present he’s ever

received in his entire life. I am so thankful that I decided to do this, and even though I was nervous about the shoot, I’m glad I did it.” The most popular gift with our Boudoir Divas brides is the 8x8 Bombshell Book because it gives us the chance to showcase up to 25 or 30 of your favorite images. A book of this size will show off all the variety of your entire photo shoot with us. There are plenty of other options, though, including smaller prints, mini albums, greeting cards, and calendars. You can give the gift on the morning of the wedding, but sometimes brides prefer to give it to him on the night before the wedding, after the rehearsal dinner. This is another fabulous option, especially if you want to be there to see the look on his face as he opens his gift. Whichever way you decide to present him with the gift, you can be sure that it will be a moment he won’t soon forget. What most brides don’t realize while booking a boudoir shoot is that this is something that is so much more than just a gift to their groom. If you decide to book a shoot with us, you will find that it is an experience that will give you a renewed sense of confidence. As a boudoir client said: “Thank you for such a wonderful and enlightening experience yesterday. I can’t express how much I appreciate what you ladies did for me, and how empowering the experience was. This is the best thing I’ve done for myself.”

The Divas’ Top 3 Tips To Prepare For Your Session:

1. Book your shoot far enough in advance in order to receive your product in time for the wedding date. We recommend booking your shoot about 4 weeks prior to your wedding.

2. Bring something fun that you’re planning on wearing on your wedding day. Some ideas: a birdcage veil, your bridal lingerie, your garter, or your wedding shoes are all things that work really well.

3. Since this is such an intimate photography session, be sure that you find a photographer who is very experienced.

Best First Dance Songs

By Michael Brewer

The “First Dance” between the bride and groom (or any combination of the two) is truly a magical moment. The perfect song will forever be a timeless memory for years to come. No matter where you are or what you are doing, your wedding song will stop you and wrap you in all the fond memories. Here’s list of impeccable songs that would be great for your “First Dance.”

Robin Thicke – Sweetest Love The smooth piano arrangements and Robin’s sweet falsetto make the perfect aria.

Jason Mraz Ft Colbie Caillat – Lucky The Grammy Awarded song for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals pairs Jason with Folk/Pop singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat on the dreamy romantic duet that’s soaked in easy-going melodies.

Avant Ft. Keke Wyatt – My First Love R&B crooner Avant teams up with the incomparable Keke Wyatt on one of the best R&B duets in recent years with incredible vocals and touching lyrics. It’s the perfect song to start your new life together.

Jade of Sweetbox – 1,000 Words Pop singer and former lead vocalist for the Asian band Sweetbox lends her voice to the English version of the power ballad for 2001 RPG Final Fantasy X-2. Jade’s voice soars to new heights as the song builds more and more until it reaches the inevitable climax of emotion.

Christina Aguilera – I Turn To You Special MJ tribute dance, courtesy of scpiercefamily.com

JLS – Love You More British X-Factor runner-ups JLS’s R&B/Pop ballad is the quintessential song for the First Dance. Amazing harmonies and heartfelt lyrics illustrates the kind of love that can last forever.

KC & JoJo – All My Life The R&B duo created the song that speaks to the heart of anyone that has found that special person.

Kylie Minogue Ft Jason Donovan – Especially For You International Pop Icon duets with her Neighbors co-star on this 80s classic pop ballad. This song has aged just as graceful as Kylie herself.

The awe-inspiring vocals of Christina Aguilera truly make this a magical and unforgettable song.

Still romantic, infectious and encapsulates the love that can stand the test of time.

Robbie Danzie with Takao Naoki – And Forever This incredible duet used in the ending credits for the anime Big O; gorgeous piano and orchestral arrangements dances in perfect harmony with the vocals textures of Robbie and Takao.

Leona Lewis – I Will Be UK X-Factor Winner Leona Lewis lends her angelic and powerful vocals to the Avril Lavigne penned Rock Ballad lifted from her debut album Spirit.

Mariah Carey – Lead The Way Taken from the soundtrack of Mariah’s movie debut Glitter, “Lead The Way” is a shinning example of songwriting meets storytelling. Mariah’s vocals on this song are truly a gift from above.

Taylor Swift – Begin Again

R. Kelly – Love Letter

Whitney Houston – I Believe In You And Me

R. Kelly’s reinvention into sentimental soulful R&B brings out the best in his voice and songwriting. The perfect song for those who want to “Chicago Step” for the first dance.

Finding love the second time around can be sweeter than finding your first love. Taylor’s country ballad “Begin Again” taken from her latest album RED, recounts the love that was lost and the new love that was found.

The late great Whitney Houston’s theme for the motion picture Preacher’s Wife is one of the best ballads of her long career. It’s powerful, soft and beautiful all at once.

Robyn – Indestructible (Acoustic Version) The orchestral rendition of Robyn’s electronic ballad is no less than a masterpiece.

Best Wedding Movies By Noelle Tolentino, The Posh Knot What is it about wedding movies that bring out this nostalgic, emotional, warm and fuzzy side of us (that sometimes involves tears and hysterical laughter)? They are the kind that of movies that make you want to curl up on the couch with a glass of wine and the company of your best friends. Ultimately, these kinds of movies are about relationships, between the bride and groom, and their relationship with friends and family. Although imperfect, the audience can relate in some way, shape, or form to different aspects of these relationships.

THE WEDDING PLANNER

I LOVE YOU, MAN

Pardon my thoughts “You think it. I say it.”

By AJ Walden @JusticeK33per

This is the “I DO” Issue here at GOODS but of course Mr. Pardon My Thoughts has to take a left turn while staying on the same highway of course. I asked dozens of people what words came to mind when they heard the word “Marriage”. Don’t do it. Hard work. Forever. Unity. Proceed with caution. Sacrifice. The general consensus was that it takes hard work and consistency to make a marriage last.

The #1 cause for divorce is money so once you’ve established this is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you should know about their financial status. What is his or her credit score? Have any debt? Have any reckless spending habits? Are you going to get a joint account? Keep in mind bad money habits during the relationship will spill over into the marriage and then it will affect the both of you.

I feel like in this day and age most people don’t take marriage as serious as generations before us. I mean, every time you turn around, celebrities are getting married and divorced like it’s nothing to it. Is it ok to say there are some deal breakers in marriage? Some people say “No” while others like me say, “Hell Yeah.” So I say before even taking the enormous step to say, “I DO,” you should discuss deal breakers. Now before, I get into them please be aware this is for people who are about to get married; don’t give a guy you just met a long ass list of what you won’t deal with because he will probably run away.

Children are what you both said you wanted when you met, but now 5 years later one of you realize you aren’t cut out for PTA meetings & car pools. This isn’t a minor thing, and for most people this isn’t a phase. Not everyone wants children so if you are in this situation you should either cross having a Jr. off your list and possibly head to an animal shelter and get Fido instead. Don’t automatically assume that your fiancé will change because if they don’t you will be bitter and resentment will set in. Family interference also known as Monster In Laws. The family you can’t stand to

be around. The people who are beyond the call of duty annoying. For some people, you may think this isn’t a deal breaker, but if you marry a momma’s boy whose mother hates you or a daddy’s girl whose dad doesn’t think you are worthy, you are in for the ride of your life. Believe it or not, lots of people divorce because of the over involvement of external sources. If you truly love each other, family and friends should be notified that disrespect isn’t going to be tolerated and if it occurs, you will cut them off. No, ifs ands or buts about it. If your spouse has to question where your loyalty lies, it won’t work. Infidelity is the ultimate betrayal. If this does occur, can you forgive? Now I know someone somewhere is thinking

why the hell would I jinx my marriage by even discussing this. Well, because it happens. It’s a real issue for couples all over the world. If this is something that you know will cause you to leave the marriage, then you should put that on the table. On another note if you have forgiven someone once or even more for this and still want to marry them, please know they will cheat in the marriage, as well. Don’t be naïve and think marriage means perfection. Now, if you’ve discussed all the deal breakers and realize that you have a winner on your hands, then go for it. Remember marriage is hard work but it is also beautiful. As long as you have love, respect, trust, and compromise from time to time, it can work.
