World Day of Prayer March 4, 2011

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever shall believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

"Informal prayer leads to prayerful action" is the motto of The World Day of Prayer (WDP). The WDP is an ecumenical movement created by and composed of Christian women of many denominations worldwide who come together the first Friday of March every year. With more than 170 countries participating, each year a different country organizes the day and prepares resources. The WDP National and Regional Committees of that country prepare the order of worship and select the theme. This year, Chile is the organizing country. Their theme is "How Many Loaves Have You." On this day, the women participants of Chile will have an opening procession carrying a panara. That is the name Chileans give to their everyday bread. Eating and sharing bread is a universal sign of hospitality. They want us to ponder: How many loaves have you? What are your gifts? What can you share? The World Day of Prayer had its origins in the U.S. in the 19th century with a day of prayer organized by Mary Ellen James, the wife of a Presbyterian minister. Two years later, two Baptists called for a Day of Prayer, and this slowly grew into the WDP. Collective prayers begin at sunrise and end at the last sunset. Before, on and after the 2011 World Day of Prayer, the USA Committee reminds us of the women of Chile. They have spoken of a world of hunger and great anguish, and where noise prevents many from hearing the voices of the impoverished. The questions remain from the women of Chile, "How many loaves have you?" "What do you have to share with others?"

Open Doors Calls For Prayer for Christians In Egypt The current violence in Egypt is challenging for Christians there and Open Doors USA is calling on the church in the West to unite in prayer for believers and the future of the country. "While the huge protests in the streets against the government of President Hosni Mubarak have not been targeting Christians, it is causing the churches to suspend some services and ministry activities in the Cairo area," says Dr. Carl Moehller, President of

Open Doors USA. "It is also causing many to consider the consequences of a potentially more radical Muslim government replacing the current regime. While the situation is still very unclear, the potential for any power vacuum to be filled with extremist political groups is very real and could have grave consequences. "The events of recent days show that while the majority of Egyptians support the existence of the Coptic church, there are ex-

tremist elements of that society that will even bomb churches in order to promote their ideology. Many more Muslim Egyptians, while not militant, are religiously opposed to those who convert to Christianity from Islam. Muslim Background Believers continue to face widespread hostility simply for wanting to exercise religious freedom and change their religion from Islam to Christianity." An Egyptian church leader told Open Doors: "Can you join us in prayer for peace for our

World Good News Press Page 3 Haiti One Year-A Ray of Hope A New "Miracle" Village Is Built for Earthquake Victims -- It's been a little over a year since a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the small country of Haiti. Amidst reports of sidetracked donations and widespread ineffectiveness bringing relief to the suffering people of Haiti, there is a ray of hope for survivors living in a tent city outside Fond Parisien. A new village is currently being built, literally from the ground up, by a local ministry and its future inhabitants. The project is a vision of Love A Child Ministries, and arose from the immense suffering witnessed by founders Bobby and Sherry Burnette in the aftermath of the earthquake. "January 12th, 2010 changed us forever. Our lives will never be the same," says Sherry Burnette. Phase One of the project has already been completed, and the first fifty houses are now home to amputee survivors and their families. Phase Two is currently under construc-

tion, with 206 more houses scheduled for completion at the end of this month. The full project will be a master-planned community with 500 permanent homes, public buildings, gravel roads, and a market area for local business to flourish.

Tehran Condemns Documentary 'Iranium' as Attempt to Thwart Iran's 'Peaceful' Nuclear Activities The Film is Available Now for Free Online Viewing and can be embedded on Websites and Blogs NEW YORK, Feb. 8, 2011 -Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast denounced the documentary film Iranium today, calling the film an attempt to harm the progress of Iran's nuclear program. Mehmanparast said the documentary "proves that certain Western countries are dismayed by [Iran's] peaceful nuclear activities which are carried out in line with [defending its] inalienable rights," and creates "an unreal atmosphere in order to apply pressure on our policies." "They should know that this path is wrong and the public opinion will not fall for such fabricated, unreal facts," Mehmanparast added. lamic Revolution of 1979, including the buildup of Iran's nuclear program through the Presidential Elections of 2009. The film is available now for free online viewing for the first 50,000 registrants at www.iraniumthemovie.com. The free viewing is part of Iranium's nationwide screening event, which includes premiere events today in AMC theaters in select cities, and at community centers across the United States. The film's flagship premiere event will take place today on Capitol Hill, in the Rayburn Congressional Office Building. Iranium was screened Sunday, February 6 in Ottawa, Canada following a previous cancellation of the film's premiere at Canada's National Library and Archives. The cancellation came as a direct result of requests from Iran's Embassy on the day of

the screening. "In the West, we use freedom of speech to change public opinion. We develop documentaries and software to achieve our goals," said Alex Traiman, director of Iranium. "Iran's leaders on the other hand, develop illegal nuclear weapons, sponsor terror around the world and brutalize their own citizens to achieve their goals." Narrated by Academy Award Nominee and Emmy Award Winning Iranian actress, Shohreh Aghdashloo, the 60minute film uses rare footage from Iran and interviews with 25 politicians, Iranian dissidents, and leading experts on Middle East policy, terrorism, and nuclear proliferation.

Global Economic Recovery Is Slipping Away, Say Accountants LONDON, February 2, -- The global economic recovery, which has been slowing down in the past few months, has now gone into reverse, according to a worldwide survey of finance professionals by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). The results of ACCA's Global Economic Conditions survey for the fourth quarter of 2010, show that twice the number of accountants as compared with the previous quarter (28% as opposed to 14%) believe that the recovery is slipping away. Faith in the recovery is also at its lowest level in 18 months, with less than a third of respondents (32%) believing that conditions are improving - or are about to. In the previous quarter nearly a half (47%) were optimistic about economic prospects. As a result, business confidence, as recorded by the survey of more than 600 professional accountants from

around the world, has now gone into negative territory for the first time since the third quarter of 2009, with the share of respondents reporting no change in their confidence levels (37%, down from 42% in Q3, 2010) falling below that of respondents who had lost confidence in their organisations (38%, up from 28%). Manos Schizas, Senior Policy Adviser with ACCA, said: "The issue for finance professionals for some time now has been the question of whether the economy, which had been showing signs of recovery, had taken a pause for breath or was about to take a downturn. The findings of this survey suggest that finance professionals think the downturn is now the more likely scenario." While the SME sector appears to be the most resilient, followed by the private, nonfinancial sector, there has been a significant drop in confidence in accountants working in large financial services companies.

This may be as a response to developments such as the economic crises in some European countries. Finally, as had been feared, confidence levels among public sector accountants are lower than were seen during the depths of the downturn and the loss of confidence in this sector continues to accelerate. The survey has also shown that accountants see governments as being powerless to prevent a new downturn. As a result, assessments of government policy have decoupled from economic conditions and remained relatively positive. While 38% of respondents (up from 33%) rated their governments' responses to current economic conditions as 'poor' or 'very poor', a relatively stable 26% (down from 27%) rated them as 'good' or 'very good'. The survey shows that late payment is on the increase, as is the number of insolvencies. More of this article at:www.goodnewspress.us

Good News Press Page 6 Prayer Changes Things By Mark E. Baker Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7. and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul is telling us that we should pray and make our requests made known to God, but first of all, he is telling us to not be anxious. This is step one. There is no need to go to step two if step one is not followed. Unlike a set of instruction you may get when assembling something purchased, you can often look at the thing and see that this part goes here and that part goes there. God ' s instructions are specific in the way they are written and in the way we are suppose to follow them. You must follow God ' s instructions if you want to get the desired results. If you don’t follow God ' s instructions there is no need in blaming God for the lack of results, just go back to the Word of God and find out where you missed it. An anxious heart will not be able to receive the promises of God by faith. Be anxious for nothing. Do not have any anxiety about anything, as one translation says. Then you can make your request made known to God, and the desired result will be peace of mind and heart. You may ask what that has to do with whatever your request was. Peace is an incredible thing. It is the desired result of praying according to God ' s will. If you don’t have God ' s peace, you won’t receive what ever your petition was. First of all, you are to go to God with confidence and full assurity. You get this way by thinking continually on the word of God and keeping His promises before you. Secondly if you don’t have peace, you need to check and see if you have followed the first two steps. I would like to point out that this is not a formula, buts God ' s instructions to us in order to receive His promises. John 15:7 "If you abide in Me,

and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

John 16:23 "And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatJesus the master teacher said it ever you ask the Father in My so simply and directly. Step name He will give you. 24. one, you must abide in Him. "Until now you have asked Step two, His words must nothing in My name. Ask, and abide in you. Step three, ask you will receive, that your joy what you desire and it shall be may be full. done for you. He said a very similar thing to what the Apos- Peace was one of the end tle Paul later said, Didn’t He? results of prayer, but Jesus was saying we are to ask so that You see the Word of God our joy may be full. Have you always flows together. You are ever considered that God not going to have anxiety if wants us to have joy and you are doing what Jesus said to do, are you? If you are abiding in Jesus, and His words are abiding in you, then you are going to the Father in prayer, anxiety free, and the end result will be the peace of God will keep you heart and mind in Christ Jesus. I would like to point out something else while we are looking at this Scripture, Jesus said ask what you desire. He didn’t say to just ask what you need, but what you desire. Then He said that it, or the desire you petitioned God about would be given to you. Your hearts desires will be in line with God ' s Word if you are abiding in Him and His words are abiding in you, won ' t they? Yes they will! You won ' t have to worry about asking for the wrong things, you will be so full of God ' s Word that nothing but things in line with His Word will be asked for. When you are praying this way, your prayer is the will of God. Prayer is another way of saying you are processing out the very will of God, working out His will and bringing His will into existence here on the Earth. You might ask why do I have to ask if it is already God ' s will. Won’t He just bring it to pass? NO! We must ask!

peace, and He’s telling us in His Word what to do in order to walk in these things. We must ask. We have not because we ask not. We could put this in the personal way and say we will have because we ask! I am not trying to twist something around, I ' m just pointing out that we are being told to ask so that we might receive. God wants us to have joy, peace, and to fulfill the desires of our heart.

The Apostle James said; Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:2b- Sometimes we miss God by 3. praying the wrong way, there are many different types of Again, if you are abiding in prayer mentioned in the Word God ' s Word, you are not of God. They wanted to fulfill that perfect will of God in their lives, So they were fasting, worshiping God, waiting on the Lord to give them direction, weren’t they? Have you ever stopped to consider what would have happened to Paul and Barnabas if they had not taken the time to wait on God, seek Him, and avail themselves of Him. We each have a part to play in this. You don’t just

The calling of God was already there, but they had to put themselves into a place where they could receive that calling and anointing didn’t they? . Paul went on to fulfill the calling of God on His life and wrote 2/3s of the New Testament in the process. The prayer of salvation is the prayer we pray when we receive eternal life. As I said earlier you don’t get saved over and over again, just like you don’t get born naturally over and over again. It is a one time deal. There are times when we miss God and we have to pray the prayer of repentance. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This was written to Christians, not to the world. The world doesn’t have fellowship with God at all.

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. Your word says, ―...and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.‖ (Jn.6:37), So I know You won’t cast me out, but You take me in, And I thank you for it. You said in your Word, "whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. ' ' (Ro. 10:13). I am calling on Your name, So I know You have saved me now, You also said, ―...that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.‖ (Ro.10:9,10).

Good News Press Page 7 Does God Know When You’re Hanging On by a Thread by Dr. Paul Dean I got a phone call recently that no pastor wants to get; a man in my church had suffered a massive heart attack and it didn't look good at all. Four hours after I got to the hospital to be with the family, he died. You can imagine the grief. This man and his wife had experienced a lot of grief over the years. I was reminded they lost a child when I saw them weeping over his grave after the woman's father was buried just a few months ago. I stood with this couple beside another casket when their daughter-inlaw was killed in an automobile accident a few weeks ago. And now this precious lady who loves the Lord was dealing with the loss of her husband of thirty-three years. She asked me a question as we stood in that hospital waiting room: "They say God won't put on you more than you can bear. But, does God know when you're hanging on by a thread?" Sometimes it doesn't seem like God knows how we feel or what we're going through. There are times when we don't think we can make it. The Bible is filled with God's people who felt that way. The Psalmist said, "O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried out day and night before you...For my soul is full of troubles and my life draws near to the grave...I am like a man who has no strength, adrift among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, who you remember no more" (Ps. 88:1-5). These are vivid pictures if you think about them. David himself cried out, "I am weary with my groaning; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears" (Ps. 6:6). More than once he felt like God had abandoned him. That's the context of the chorus we sing from his words: "As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God" (Ps. 42:1). He was in a desert of depression and felt there was no way out. That's why he said "My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, 'Where is your God'" (v. 3)? When you have nothing to eat but your own tears, you're hanging on by a thread. And yes, God knows that. The very fact verses like these are all over the Bible tells us that God knows how we feel and has not abandoned us. When

we're hammered by hurts He is with us and we actually have an endless supply of grace from which to draw in time of need. That's why Paul said, "No trial has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tested beyond what you are able, but with the trial will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Cor. 10:13). (This verse applies to trials or temptations). Now, these troubles are "common to man." Paul's first word of encouragement is that we are not alone in our affliction. What we experience is experienced by others. We need not feel our burden is such that no one has ever faced the same. But Paul also says something about God and His faithfulness to us. Despite the fact that winds of adversity blow, God does not forget those whom He loves. He knows there are times when you're hanging on by a thread but "will not allow you to be tested beyond what you are able" to bear. He will not allow a weight upon you that you cannot endure by His strength and grace. He will not test you beyond your ability and the help you have in Christ. God is the one who actually provides "the way of escape." The picture here is that of a ship on a raging sea in the midst of a fierce storm. The vessel is bouncing about in the rough waters and the wind is blowing her straight toward the rocks. Nothing can be done and she is about to founder and be destroyed. It's stormy, dark, and all hope is gone. Yet, just as calamity is about to strike, an opening in the rocks appears and the ship skirts through into a peaceful cove where protection from the battering storm is provided. The ship and crew are safe in the cove as they whether the storm that churns round about them. The point is not that deliverance from the storm is God's way of escape. Rather, the way of escape is God's deliverance into the cove that one might endure the storm in safety. That's why Paul adds, "that you may be able to endure it." Christians face trials and temptations. Yet, God is faithful. He provides the way of escape to ride out the storm. You say, "Okay, but what do I do? How do I get to the cove

where I can feel like I'll be able to weather this hurricane in my life?" The answer is our thinking. We have to fight the tendency to think about nothing but the suffering we face and actually think more about God Himself; His goodness, love, grace, mercy, and purpose for us in the midst of terrible circumstances. God uses tough times to refine us like fire refines gold (1 Pet. 1:67). It is the testing of our faith that produces Christ's strength and character in us (Jas. 1:3-4). God uses hardship like a blacksmith's hammer and anvil to make us more like Christ (Rom. 8:28-29). We have to focus our thoughts on Christ and not the tragedy. And that means we have to trust Him. Isaiah says, "You [God] will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you" (Isa. 26:3). The Lord Jesus is the way of escape; "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted/tested in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need" (Heb. 4:15-16). Let us cast all our care upon Him because He cares for us (1 Pet. 5:7). If we can do that, then slowly but surely, that thread we're clinging to that feels as if it's about to give way will become a chain attached to an anchor that cannot be moved: the Lord Jesus Himself (Heb. 6:19-20). Yes, in spite of the storm, God knows, and the anchor will hold. Dr. Paul Dean is a pastor, cultural commentator, and author.
