Uncle Tommy

y first memory of Tommy Bohannon was on a hot summer day when I was just a toddler. I had been locked in a bedroom with only a raised
window to provide relief from the sweltering heat that engulfed the little project house apartment. Being so young, I had no concept of time, but my hours in that room had to be of some length because eventually I had to use the closet as a bathroom after I had drained a baby bottle filled with Coca Cola. You see, I am just one in a multitude of those who suffered or are still suffering the effects of childhood neglect and abuse. Uncle Tommy had married my mother’s oldest sister (Aunt Bertie) shortly before his retirement, and they lived directly across the street in a project house apartment as well. Eventually, they heard my cries of desperation and appeared outside the bedroom window. Uncle Tommy held a kitchen knife which he was using to pry the screen off the window. I’m sure he must have tipped his fedora hat off his forehead, as he often did throughout my childhood when he was determined to complete a difficult task. Though I was very young, I remember that day as clear as memories from this morning. Finally, the small-framed man reached through the window as I held my little noodle-like arms up to him. I remember the relief I felt as my body grazed against the windowsill on my way to freedom. Uncle Tommy and Aunt Bertie took me home with them, gave me a warm bath and fed me a bowl of Total cereal which I absolutely hated! By the time I was seven years old, I had been legally adopted by my aunt and uncle. Uncle Tommy was the one stable force and positive influence throughout my childhood years. He taught me how to read music, play the piano, and tend a vegetable garden. During the summer months, he took me to the library to check out armloads of books, always encouraging me to read and learn. Some afternoons
Sometimes he would have me read out loud to him, and I can still hear his hearty laugh ending with soft grunting when I mispronounced the word totally as “toe-tally.” I miss my beloved Uncle Tommy, and I would love just one more chance to lay my head against his soft flannel shirt and drink in the faint scents of Old Spice cologne and Bruton snuff that lingered on him. Just one more chance to let him know how much his Christian walk and love influenced my life. Just one more chance to share my personal struggles and glean from his wisdom. Just one more chance to sit on the piano stool with him to play a piano duet. Uncle Tommy was a treasure in the midst of a difficult childhood…a thread of grace forever woven in the tapestry of my life.

f you’re a Seinfeld fan like me, you likely remember George Costanza’s flustered exclamation, “Serenity Now!” With a wink and a nod toward Seinfeld, I’ve titled this month’s column “Inheritance Now,” with the provocative idea that perhaps parents would best serve their children—as well as their own retirement years—by bequeathing a future inheritance while the parents are still alive. Before indignant howls of protest reach a deafening crescendo, allow me to explain. First, I’m a firm believer in “teach people to fish” (that is, be self-sufficient and make wise financial decisions) instead of giving them your own fish which does nothing to educate them financially. Please remember that in past columns I have made a clear distinction between emergency aid/charity in extraordinary situations, which I agree with, and chronic “enabling” of irresponsible behavior by subsidizing someone long-term, which I feel is wrong on many levels. So, in the spirit of teaching our children and grandchildren to “fish” by building wealth themselves, why not give them a jump-start today instead of bequeathing them money in your Will after you’re dead? By doing it while you’re alive, you can be handson in teaching your loved ones how to invest and grow your monetary legacy. For example, if you have children or grandchildren who are working and earning money, you can help them open a Roth IRA account where you can contribute money for them to invest. Plus, you’re still around to help them choose where to invest their Roth IRA, and to ensure they actually do it. But if you wait until you’ve passed away, you have zero influence over how your financial legacy is handled . . . or mishandled.

Secondly, bestowing an inheritance while you’re alive may be a “cheaper” way to go. Think about it—what’s the most valuable resource when it comes to investing and compounding returns? Time. A small amount (a few thousand dollars, for instance) invested in a stock index fund for a teenaged child or grandchild will grow to nearly one million dollars or more by the time they retire in their late 60’s. You may not have $800,000 to leave each child or grandchild when you die, but by opening that account and getting it started now while they’re young, it will compound and grow to that amount later in their lifetime. And think of the implications for your own retirement years: without any pressure to leave a substantial amount of money for your children and grandchildren, you can “live it up” a bit more during your own retirement years, spending every nickel in the knowledge that you’ve already bestowed a generous legacy. So, for future birthday and Christmas presents for children and grandchildren, strongly consider making contributions to their Roth IRA or other investment accounts to give them “inheritance now” rather than later. Over time, the total amount you gifted them will likely be larger than the amount you were planning to leave in your Will. My wife and I have done something similar with our adult sons, and we will do the same for our daughter one day soon—just so you don’t think I’m talking about a “pie in the sky” idea that’s unrealistic. We helped our sons open a Roth IRA when they turned 16 and began working, and we did a dollar-for-dollar match for money they contributed. We also helped them buy their first homes so they could begin building equity and learn how real estate can grow wealth. By giving them their inheritance “now,” they’ll be wealthier and we’re now off the hook! Sounds like a winwin to me!

Doc explains, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Now at his wits’ end, Butler realizes that Dillon knew he might die when he walked through the door. “Nobody would have come through that door for me,” Butler said as he handed Dillon his shotgun and surrendered peacefully. This heartwarming episode reminds us of the importance of friendship and the willingness

What do you have to pass down to your children that can plant seeds of purpose and harvest a crop of hope? Here’s an idea: make a legacy book for each of the children

Abraham Had Faith and A Father’s Heart by Jonathon Wright
I
n Genesis 21, Abraham and Sarah finally have a child and name him Isaac. God was gracious to them, just as He had promised. It took possibly more than 25 years of
waiting, but God proved Himself faithful through it all. See Genesis 12:4 and 17:1-4 for the ages of Abraham before the birth of Isaac. Shortly after the circumcision and weaning of Isaac, Ishmael is making fun of Isaac. Sarah goes straight to Abraham, demands that Hagar and Ishmael be thrown out, and says Ishmael will not share in the inheritance with her son Isaac. At first, Abraham was very troubled by her request because he loved Ishmael. However, God told him that he should not be troubled by these things and that he should listen to his wife’s requests. The Lord also told him that Ishmael would be blessed and become a nation, but Isaac would carry God’s blessing. Abraham knew and had faith that God would take care of Ishmael as He promised in verse 13 of this chapter. Because of this, Abraham sent them away with some food and water. Does this not remind you of when a father today has to allow his son or daughter to go out into the real world? He knows it will not be easy, but there is also a sense that God will take care of the young

I’m not sure if I believe in fire anymore.” Then one concentrating on the ashes stopped complaining because he noticed a soft glow when the wind blew across the ashes. “Perhaps the fire isn’t out after all,” he said. Glancing at the ashes, another said, “You are seeing things that aren’t there.” “Well,” said the first, “I think I’ll add one of my logs to

Ingredients • ¼ cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped • ¼ cup chopped jalapeno peppers • 2 tablespoons white vinegar • 1 ½ teaspoons minced garlic • 3 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon sugar • ½ teaspoon salt

hours remain, and a dramatic night struggle pits a sleepless Jacob against an unnamed opponent (Genesis 32:22-32). Discerning his sparring partner’s identity is an exciting challenge as this twilight contest illuminates salient details of personal transformation. The scene transpires on a dark stage (32:22). Shadowed by a death threat, Jacob left two decades prior under less-than-optimal circumstances. He had no way of knowing if Esau still held a grudge (Genesis 27-28). Jacob seemingly follows cordial protocol by announcing his arrival (32:3-5), yet this herald also makes him a target. Jacob was vulnerable, and messengers report Esau will confront his brother in force (32:6). Jacob left home a single man without possessions. He returns married, with maidservants, children, livestock, and material goods (32:22-23). On the eve of their meeting, Jacob employs a survival strategy. Fearfully facing an uncertain future (32:7), he divides the company in two, calculating if one group suffers an attack, the other might escape. He deploys his household under cover of darkness (32:22). Divestment of belongings complete, his bareness revisits how his self-imposed exile began: alone, with nothing but his staff (32:10).
