Love—The More Excellent Way by David Kramer

I

n 1 Corinthians 13, the Apostle Paul goes into great detail in order to define what love is and what it is not. He wrote this chapter as a part of a larger teaching on the gift

of tongues and spiritual gifts. Every gift that God gives to us as His people must be motivated and operated through God’s love. Key Text: “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31). 1. The more excellent way that Paul is speaking of is LOVE. Paul was encouraging the Corinthian church to operate their spiritual gifts. He exhorts that the spiritual gifts which the Holy Spirit gives to each one in the Church are for the good of the whole body (1 Corinthians 12:12-26). 2. We should have a strong desire to be gifted by the Lord. Paul said to “covet earnestly the best gifts.” The challenge is to be sure we desire gifts for the right reasons. Notice the importance that Paul placed on love even over spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. There is a tendency to measure a person’s spiritual life by the manifestation of their spiritual gifts; however, the better way

3. The love that 1 Corinthians 13 describes is AGAPE LOVE. Agape love is a sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers inconvenience, discomfort, and even death for the benefit of another–without expecting anything in return! This is the highest form of love. It is the kind of sacrificial love that God has for mankind. God’s agape love caused Him to give His only Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice to free us from our sins. It is an unselfish, giving love. 4. Paul goes on to explain another reason why love is superior to other spiritual gifts. The gifts, as great as they are, will one day vanish away, but love lasts forever (Corinthians 13:8-13)! The spiritually mature Christian understands that the use of spiritual gifts is to bring all believers to that glorious day when we shall see Jesus and be like Him. Love will motivate us to use our spiritual gifts to edify and build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 14:12). Agape love is a sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers inconvenience, discomfort, and even death for the benefit of another—without expecting anything in return!

Proximity— Be There MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

K

en Coleman, a regular on the Dave Ramsey radio show, authored a book last year titled The Proximity Principle which emphasizes the importance of putting yourself in close proximity to others who are working in the career field where you would like to work, with an eye toward landing a fulfilling career. While Coleman’s book is aimed toward those seeking a more rewarding career, the proximity principle—as a concept—is applicable to financial success, as well as numerous other aspects of life. For example, those wishing to lose weight and get fit need to be in the presence of other fit people to watch and learn and ask questions. I’ve talked with numerous people who were unhappily single, yet they never put themselves in situations (i.e.—singles groups at church) to meet potential life partners but rather sat home night after night hoping Mister or Miss Right would appear magically at their doorstep. The proximity principle dictates that we greatly increase our chances of success by intentionally putting ourselves in a position to meet those whom we want to emulate, or those who can help us achieve our goals. Woody Allen once quipped, “Eighty percent of life is just showing up,” and while this may sound glib, there is some truth to it. By simply showing up and putting yourself in the right place (even if it’s not necessarily the “right time”), you enhance your chances for success. Once you know what your financial goals are, look around for people whom it would be advantageous to meet and pick their brain regarding how they handle their finances, how they balance risks and rewards, and what lessons they have learned along the way. Be sure to choose wisely those people from whom you solicit financial advice. On various financial podcasts lately, I’ve

10 // July 2020

heard this adage repeated: “Never take advice from someone you wouldn’t want to trade places with.” Or, to put my spin on it, “Never take financial advice from someone whose net worth is less than yours.” Beware of smoke and mirrors when ascertaining whether someone is a financial success. That luxury SUV and designer clothes may be signs of financial success—or they may be signs of excessive consumer debt and no real wealth. Once you have identified those with whom you wish to network, don’t waste time. Life is too short. Put yourself out there and meet as many people as you can; tell them your financial goals and plans, and then listen to their feedback. Don’t get discouraged, and ask God to give you wisdom and discernment to understand and to evaluate their feedback. Consider the difference between sharing your financial goals with someone who is more successful than you, as opposed to telling these goals to those who are less financially successful. Often, the latter group (usually family and friends) respond with discouragement rather than encouragement. After all, they are likely unknowledgeable about how to achieve financial success, and may even resent your ambitions. But those who have achieved what you hope to achieve will more than likely offer words of encouraging, practical advice. The key is to put yourself in close proximity to these people. Then, once you have networked with them, be sure not only to listen to what they have to say, but also to show that you are a person who is willing to take some action to improve your financial situation. James 1:22 reminds us to “be doers of the word, and not hearers only,” and we should likewise act on wise counsel.

God’s Covenant

O

by Heather Lowe

n November 7, 2018, the Lord revealed Himself to me in a very special way. I was working in Woodstock as a pension analyst and I was making the long drive home. It was pouring down rain and my heart was so heavy because I realized that I had been on a journey of seeking the Truth and pursuing my calling to be a life purpose coach for 7 years and I had lost everything in the process including my marriage. I was caught between New Age beliefs and Christianity and I wondered how much more I would have to lose to find the truth, but I had nothing left. When I realized all this, I called out to God and I asked Him if His son, Jesus Christ, had been my guide for the past 7 years and I also told Him to show me the Truth if He wanted me to do what He called me to do in the name of Jesus to honor and glorify His name. Right after that prayer, I realized something so simple - that I could just decide that Jesus had been my guide all those years and give Him the honor and glory for leading me...and that’s what I decided to do. In that moment, I recommitted my life to Christ. Right when I made that decision, I made a turn at a stop light and I could see that behind me was a fully-formed, vibrant double-rainbow. I took some pictures of it and the next day, I noticed something incredible. When I looked closer at the last picture I took, I noticed that the rainbow was pointing to a cross in the word COVENANT on a church sign. I was speechless. The Lord confirmed the Truth of the gospel to me that day. He had been leading me to Himself the entire time. I rejected Jesus numerous times on my journey, but He never stopped pursuing me. Shortly after that my son and I were Baptized. At the start of the next year, I committed to read the entire Bible in 90 days and as I did, the Lord also restored my marriage. I had no idea who God really was until I read the Bible. I could finally understand and appreciate the sacrifice that both God and Jesus made to free us free from our sin, so that we could have a relationship with them and spend eternity in Heaven - and all we have to do is receive the free gift of salvation by believing and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Since I’ve re-committed my life to Christ, I have innerpeace, love, purpose, and meaning because I allowed Him to

meet my deepest inner needs. When Covid-19 hit, the Lord placed me with a team of Online spiritual coaches through the Groundwire ministry. I’m honored to be serving the Lord by leading others to Christ and offering life and spiritual guidance and prayer for others in crisis and I’m so grateful that he would use someone like me to do it. I had to lose everything to find Jesus again, but what I realized is that He is more than enough, He is everything that we need. We are all designed with a God-sized hole inside of us. Without Christ, we will try to fill ourselves up using anything from this broken world. The missing piece is and always will be Jesus - apart from Christ, I am nothing and can do nothing.

One Thing Only Is Essential!

“M

by Lisa King

aster, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” The Master said,

“Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her,” Luke 10:40-42 (MSG). Isn’t this just like sisters or us girls in general? As you can tell, this has been going on since Bible times. Society always seems to want us to one up each other and boy do we want recognition for it! See Jesus, look what I’m doing and look what she is not doing! ONE THING ONLY IS ESSENTIAL! We have heard so much about the word essential lately. All of a sudden the word became more important than ever before. However, the true essential thing, God, has never or will never change. The definition of essential: absolutely necessary; extremely important. We learned that what we really needed was food, medicine, and God! Mary in the Bible knew this all along. Why do we women try to put on our Superwoman cape and in a parking lot because I had over-committed myself so terribly! There was no way I could have made each commitment. I thought to myself, this is ridiculous, why did you do this again? Only one thing is really necessary, Lisa, only one thing! We think our Facebook friends, coworkers, and everyone we know have it together, perfectly all the time! Or am I the only one that tries to keep her cape from getting caught as she flies out the door? God has slowed us down and I think for an important purpose. Psalm 46:10 states, “Be still, and know that I am God.” God you have our attention. I pray we remember that only one thing is essential and that is you, Lord! I had a precious friend and mentor, Cuma Bryant. She always seemed to be so calm and have it all together! I don’t

know about you, but I can get a little flustered trying to keep my “I Love Lucy Superwoman” act going? I look a whole lot more like Lucy than Wonder Woman. As life gets faster and faster, I keep having to stuff candy in my mouth to keep up with the speed of life. One day I told Mrs. Cuma’s son that I admired her so much for doing every part of her life well. Something I greatly lack! He told me she always had ENOUGH of her to go around. I want to be that woman! I know where Mrs. Cuma got her “enough” from: being still before the Lord. She knew what was ESSENTIAL, vital, and important. One thing only is essential, my friends and that is to be still at His feet. Won’t you join me and sit at His feet? That is the only thing that is essential! About The Author

uddy Smothers’ wife LaMuriel really started it all. In 1966 Buddy invested in his wife’s energy and talent by helping her become the owner of her first restaurant, the Pixie Drive Inn in Seymour, Tennessee.

She hired their cook, Hettie Guffey, to help out. Soon, LaMuriel and Hettie were cooking up a storm. People would drive for hours for their country buffet, and business doubled in a year. LaMuriel and Buddy decided it was time to find their specialty, and barbecue from back home in Alabama was what they were craving. They just couldn’t find the barbecue that suited their taste. So they created their own. Buddy quit the finance business and joined LaMuriel in her newfound barbecue ambitions. With the help of their customers, they perfected the taste that would define Buddy’s. Everything was a Buddy’s original, including LaMuriel’s lemon ice box pie. The first store with the Buddy’s name opened in 1972 at 5806 Kingston Pike in West Knoxville. When singer, Dinah Shore stopped by and sampled Buddy’s delicious hushpuppies, she just had to have the recipe for her cookbook. The house was packed on Friday nights to hear bluegrass bands like Ricky Skaggs and the Knoxville Grass. 26 // July 2020

Local politicians knew a good thing and asked Buddy to bring his barbecue to rallies, and Buddy delivered it. That’s when the catering business got going. Word spread from the 1982 World’s Fair where people began to know Buddy’s as a Tennessee barbecue tradition, and Buddy Smothers as a restaurant business professional in his own right. Buddy was recognized as Restaurateur of the Year and was elected President of the Tennessee Restaurant Association. Today, Buddy’s bar-b-q consists of 16 locations all over East Tennessee. Buddy’s barb-q operates with their original philosophy of treating customers as if they were guests in their own home. They serve delicious, always fresh food at a real value with good old Southern hospitality.

Be sure to check out one of Buddy’s newest franchise locations with local managing partners, Darik and Deanne Dawes. Cleveland’s own, Pamela McCain is the general manager. They are located at 678 Paul Huff Parkway NW across from Publix grocery store in Cleveland. They are open everyday from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. They offer dine-in (indoor & outdoor seating), take-out/ to-go, drivethru, large bulk orders, feeds 5 or 10 family packs, delivery and set-up service for large groups and events. The restaurant also has a drive-thru and partner with various delivery services. They cook (hickory-smoke) it slow… but you get it fast! Come on Home to Buddy’s or let them come to you. R

Cleaning Out Your Closet ave any of you ever gotten rid of some old clothes? Maybe sold a few, gave a couple to a friend, and left the rest to goodwill? Hopefully the answer is yes, or else you probably have a lot of clothes! It might seem silly, but letting go of even the simplest of things isn’t easy! To get rid of the memories the clothes hold, the experiences they keep, and the precious moments they remind us of. I recently cleaned out my closet; and wow! I did not think it would be so difficult. I was dramatically explaining my sorrows to my mom, as I do, and she kept saying, “Raylee, it’s time to move on.” So simple, yet so powerful. You see, I think I needed to hear this and apply it to all areas of my life. If you’re like me, you feel as though change is hard. You tend to stay where you are comfortable, and are content. That can be a dangerous place to be. It’s like trying to wear clothes that are too small for you, unflattering and simply doesn’t fit! When you outgrow your clothes, there’s no point in holding onto them anymore. The same applies with life, and the seasons we go through. Sure, it’s comforting, but in all reality we will always outgrow the things of this world. That is something we as followers have to grasp. Comfort equals withering. Your potential to grow into the person God has called you to be fades the longer you stay in your “safe place.” That safe place might be a specific person, place, or maybe even a thing. We should remain thankful for all the things that God blesses us enough to miss, but must also remember that He places those special things in our life to grow and learn from. Therefore, we can’t allow fear and uncertainty of our future keep us from letting God work. In His Word it says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and give you hope for the future,” Jeremiah 29:11. He knows our plans, and promises us hope! Our purpose lies in the hands of God, not in familiarity. So when you find yourself being thrown into the next phase of life not ready to let go of the past, realize there is hope in our future and great purpose in change. That is the “comfort” we must seek, Christ and His word. That is comfort we can always count on. “The word of the Lord remains forever,” 1 Peter 1:25. You see, we will never outgrow God. Through every season

28 // July 2020

of life as we change, grow, and move on; we can rely on the one thing that doesn’t change. So the next time you’re getting rid of your old clothes, moving schools, growing away from a friend, or finding yourself having different opportunities than before; remember that it is OK. Change means growth. Comfort equals withering. Hope remains in our future, not in the past. The beautiful thing about life is that God does not intend for us to stay where we are but to grow into what will be, so have hope my friends! Clean out your closet, move out of comfort, and have hope in Christ’s purpose for you!

I’ve Fallen—But I Got Back Up!

W

by David Gray

hen we look at our history, it can be easy to beat ourselves up over all of the mistakes and failures. Truthfully, maybe we should beat ourselves up now and again. But King Solomon, the wisest man of his time, once made this astounding statement: “A good (righteous/godly) man falls seven times and rises again” (Proverbs 24:16). Surprised? The truth is, good men drop the ball, make mistakes, and get off track. Interestingly, Solomon never shares why the good man falls. It appears the cause is irrelevant. His primary message is that good men—GET BACK UP! It seems that for Solomon, the defining factor of what makes one “good” is simply that though they fall, they do, indeed, get back up. Everyone gets knocked down, but getting back up “separates the men from the boys.” According to Solomon, good men, godly men, righteous men, drop the ball, make bad decisions, fail, and maybe even question God but—get back up. This is not what I picture when thinking of a godly man. I think of Moses holding the newly etched Ten Commandments, David slaying the giant, or Elijah calling down fire from Heaven. But

34 // July 2020

every person that was greatly used by God actually fits Solomon’s description. Every one of them reacted poorly, lacked faith, questioned God, sinned, or even defied God. But every one of them—got back up. It seems that Solomon thought a person can’t actually be classified as “good” unless they have, indeed, fallen a few times. For him, being a good man was NOT about never falling. In fact, never falling might engender arrogance and pride, making one SELF-righteous instead of godly. Remember, Solomon taught that good men fall: not once or twice, but multiple times. Truthfully, it’s difficult to truly understand another’s pain unless you’ve experienced some of your own. How can you empathize with another’s failure without having failed a few times yourself? How can one truly have compassion, forgiveness, grace, or mercy unless they have needed the same? I’m convinced that our high calling is to love people this way—with compassion, grace, and understanding—but most importantly to help them— get back up. Knowing what it means to battle, to struggle, to fail, but also what it means to get back up prepares us for this great ministry. This is why the Apostle Paul declared, “He comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the same comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Corinthians 1:4). Your gifts, abilities, and talents, though important, are not the primary thing; they are not what make you who you are. What makes you a good person, a godly person, is this: a good man falls down a few times, but he always gets back up. Though you have fallen, righteous man, by His grace—get back up. Then help others do the same.

But let us consider that in 2018, the most recent numbers we have, 862,000 babies in this country died due to abortion. Unfortunately, very few people are taking measures to stem that plague on our nation. Why? Because we’ve believed the lie that abortion isn’t murder, that if someone’s lifestyle is “at risk” then the life at stake doesn’t matter, and that convenience is more “essential” than the child in the womb. My prayer is that if we’ve learned anything from this pandemic, it is that our actions do count. We can make a difference if we will act, and valuing life shouldn’t be dictated by political parties or solely discussed within the confines of a religious debate. Just as practicing social distancing, and wearing personal protective equipment, helps slow the spread of a deadly virus, your actions within the community can save the lives of unborn children, and empower their parents to make better choices, live healthier

Gò0dNews for your Taste Buds Surviving the Pandemic from the Kitchen! by Angie Parris

I

don’t know about anyone else, but when I am stressed…I like to bake. There is nothing better than the smell of fresh bread rising and baking. There is nothing more intimidating as the thought of making fresh bread for anyone other than experienced bakers. I have found myself in the kitchen during this pandemic, looking for items to bake. The need for distraction has never been greater. The moment I spotted yeast, which seems to be a hot commodity…I knew a fresh loaf of bread was in my future. Whipping up things in the kitchen can be more than just creating meals or comfort foods. In fact, baking has been found to have therapeutic value which helps to ease depression and anxiety. Any activity which takes your whole attention can have calming and therapeutic qualities. Gathering ingredients, following a recipe, mixing and kneading truly lend a therapeutic quality to this recipe. This recipe is pretty simple and turns out beautifully but will give you such a sense of accomplishment and pride when your family enjoys this with their next meal! Give it a try! I hope you will feel much more relaxed and your entire family enjoys the fresh baked goodness.

Beautiful Loaf Bread Ingredients • 2 cups water • 2/3 cups sugar • 1 ½ tablespoons Active Dry Yeast • 1 ½ teaspoons salt • ¼ cup vegetable oil • 5 ½ - 6 cups All Purpose Flour • Two large bowls • 2 Loaf Pans

Instructions Heat water to 110 degrees F. This is what I do: Heat ½ cup water in a microwave safe bowl for one minute. This will boil the water. Then add tap water from the faucet until you reach 2 cups of water. Add the sugar to the water you just heated and stir it up. Add the active dry yeast and let it set for exactly 10 minutes. It will become frothy. After 10 minutes, mix in the oil and salt. Slowly add one cup of flour at a time to the yeast mixture. You might not use all of the flour. It depends on how wet the dough is towards the end. You want to get a good non-sticky dough consistency and it will form a ball. Once the dough forms a ball, you will need to knead the dough for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the surface with flour before you begin. When you feel the dough get sticky, sprinkle more flour over the top while you knead it. When kneading is complete, you should be able to lift a small piece of dough without tearing it, just a gentle stretch. Spray a large bowl with non stick cooking spray and place the dough in the bowl. Cover with a damp towel. Let this dough rise for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. After the dough has risen, punch down the middle part of the dough and pull from the sides of the bowl. Split this into 2 equal parts and place them in greased loaf pans. Gently shape to match the loaf pan shape. Allow these to sit uncovered for another 30 minutes to rise. Place in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until they are cooked thoroughly. Feel free to brush with melted butter when they come out of the oven. Transfer to cooling rack. Enjoy a warm slice with butter and honey…you’ll be glad you did!

spirits. It is the gift of God. When the Lord made us, He made us with the capacity for faith. God made us like Himself, and Adam was to watch and care over the earth. Man lost the capacity to be God’s ambassador when Adam sinned and took on the nature of the evil one. The Apostle Paul states in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” We cannot manufacture that initial faith. The Lord makes that first deposit. Then faith grows by absorbing the Word of God into our lives and using it as a manual for life. Faith is an action. Faith goes beyond the natural and brings all the promises we read in the Bible into our lives. It is possible to gain knowledge or a mental concept of the promises without actually experiencing them in our

Taking Care of Your Mental Health During COVID-19

hen it comes to our protection during the current COVID-19 pandemic, we can preserve our physical health via: • Adhering to CDC guidelines • Practicing social distancing • Hand washing • Wearing masks in public spaces While these practices are vital to the health and wellbeing of our communities, there is another important facet of health that should not be ignored during this time – our mental health. It is

imperative to be vigilant in assuring the physical health of ourselves and those around us, while also paying due diligence to the preservation of our mental health as well. Mental health has a salient influence on overall health and well-being. Not only does it have direct repercussions for work productivity, decision-making, and stress management, but it can also have physical consequences when left unchecked. Furthermore, stress has a direct impact on our immune system. When stress is not dealt with adequately, it can compromise the body’s ability to fight off illness. Mental health issues are very common, affecting millions of Americans annually. In the wake of COVID-19, many are faced with unforeseen physical, social and economic challenges that can elevate stress, depression and other mental health issues and even have an impact in those who normally are not affected by these conditions. The bottom line? If you are suffering, you are not alone. The good news is that there are some things you can do to help alleviate stress and boost your mental health – not just during

the challenges we are facing today, but in all situations: • Checking-in regularly with family, friends and work colleagues • Taking time to relax, recharge and rest • Getting outside with safe social distancing, and getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your day • Spending quality time doing something you love, whether it is a hobby, reading a good book or watching a favorite movie or television show • Maintaining healthy, nutritious eating habits and staying hydrated • Avoiding unhelpful coping strategies like alcohol, drug and tobacco use • Focusing on the things that you can control while accepting what you cannot • Avoiding excessive time watching news and social media Another thing to remember about mental health? It is okay to talk about it. A safe, supportive and accepting environment is important regardless of the severity of one’s condition. While most people wouldn’t think twice about seeing a doctor for chest pain or other serious physical symptoms, it is equally important to proactively seek help and medical attention if you or a loved one are experiencing mental health challenges. How about some more good news? Mental health challenges can improve and resolve. In fact, most people who seek treatment for a mental health challenge show improvement. If you are experiencing a mental health issue, the benefits of seeking help and treatment can make a positive difference in your overall quality of life. If you or someone you know is suffering from stress or another mental health condition, the Senior Care Program at Starr Regional Medical Center is able to safely provide help. Located on the Etowah campus, Senior Care is a secure unit for older adults (age 50 and older) who are experiencing psychiatric symptoms that require 24-hour acute inpatient treatment. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of nurses, social workers and activity/occupational therapists under the direction and supervision of a psychiatrist. Visit StarrRegional.com for more information about our Senior Care Program or call 423-263-3600. For more information on mental health, visit www.mentalhealth.gov. Additionally, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
