to the Cross!

In 2021, Cleveland, Tennessee, residents certainly have a degree of “20/20 hindsight” or perspective for 2020. However, hope is not in a new year. The Christian’s hope is in Jesus Christ, who created all the years. As Christians look back in time with 20/20 vision, the reality is that we live between the first advent of Christ’s appearing, his death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and his second coming—our Blessed Hope (Titus 2:13). One year ago, on December 31, 2019, looking forward to a new chapter in life, I genuinely thought I knew what to expect in 2020—but it was not what I expected. The year 2020 only makes sense by looking past 2020 to the Cross. Only then do Christians have “20/20

On December 31, 2019, I looked forward to a new chapter in life beginning in 2020. However, like many who might read this article, the year 2020 was a blur. It was murky, life happened, and most of it was not as planned. There was civil dissidence, death, destruction of property, disease, and storms. Many people may feel as if they walked through a storm in 2020 and now look back at the ruin. Perhaps everything seems to have changed in the blink of an

As we consider God’s faithfulness and that of other believers, “…let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

to others not just once in a while or when it might be expected. Showing love is a daily thing: not once a week, monthly, or yearly. We have to show others that we love and care for them. It may be a kind word, a smile, or a gesture of kindness that lets others know that they are important. It might be giving your time to help others when they are in need or just by being there for them. As a Christian, we have to show the love of Christ to others. Our family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances are the ones who really deserve and need our love. In 1 John 3:1, The Bible tells us, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God; therefore the world does not know us, because it didn’t know Him.” Sometimes, it might be difficult to do when a

Difficulty is not a rarity for any of us, but the only way to get through any difficulty is to actively hope in Christ our Lord. Many people struggle with the issue of suffering and sickness in our present world, but we must remember that Christ gives us hope. We must understand that when sin entered the world, it affected everything. It affected human relationships and our relationship with God. Theologically, we know that sin is the root cause of the negative effects that we see today. However, Christ gives us hope through His work of redemption. Christ suffered and took our shame and

God Chose You

e have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you” (John 15:16). We stood backstage anxiously waiting for our names to be called. Ten finalists would go on to the next level of competition. My hair was curled. My cheeks were powdered. My pink dress was shining in dimmed lighting. My feet were sore from standing in heels for what seemed like ages, though I knew I had given it my all. This was my night to win. My heart began beating faster. I closed my eyes and imagined my “surprised look” when my name was called. Did I need to put my hands to my face, expressing shock? Should I wave to the crowd? Would it be better to pose with a hand on the hip instead? When the ninth name was announced, I smiled, knowing that I surely would be the 10th name called and would be taking that first step toward my finalist walk debut. After the 10th name was said, the sad, devastating news was now public—I was not chosen to continue the competition. I was disheartened, humiliated, and immediately began crying. I cried so much that the previous year’s winner pulled me close and held me as she began telling me that everything was okay, though her “okay” and my “okay” were extremely opposite perceptions. I believed a lie that God could not use a loser. Being younger, I somehow wildly concluded that God always worked with those who never failed. He needed perfection. Why would He want to be associated with those who did not “make the cut”? Not being accepted stings. It is not easy feeling unworthy. What kept my motivation going when I felt like giving up? It was the hope that God must still have a better plan for my future. He chose to place me here during this time out of all eternity so that I could fulfill a divine purpose for my life. He also, my friend, placed you here for a special purpose as well. We experience different seasons in life. Some are enjoyable. Others seem excruciating. What I can tell you,

14 // February 2021

though, is that God is with you every step of the way. Heed His advice and stay encouraged in His Word. It says in Psalm 37:23, “The steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in his way.” My advice to you is to keep pressing forward. Continue putting one step in front of the other. That first pageant experience was difficult, but when I could have quit after years of losing competitions, I kept going. Eventually, I finally won a title. In that first winning moment, I finally understood what that young lady had

experienced years before. What is still so amazing to me is that God had planned my own spotlight moment which would take place after years of rejection and falling short of winning so many times. He knew that my own crown was coming; I just had to be patient. Several titles, a pageant coaching business, and a few television appearances later, I share my story for those feeling rejected who believe that God cannot use them to make a difference for the kingdom. I tell them that His plan for them will exceed their expectations. My identity is not an opinion. My identity is not tangled in a rejection. It is who He says I am. He loves you and has a purpose for your life. Know that you are loved. Know that you are going to succeed. Know that He is with you wherever you go. Live chosen today! About The Author

conditioning plan. Drinking water is an important part of this plan and should include following the generally accepted advice to drink before, during, and following exercise sessions. Of course, when one increases water intake, one should plan on increased water output. It is suggested that you urinate after each water intake if facilities are accessible. Water in and then water out keeps the system working properly. Gentle muscle stretching should be a part of the daily preparation before each session. After getting your doctor’s clearance to begin the program, it’s important to e-a-s-e into your training. implementing, and maintaining a plan is important. Here are some thoughts and ideas and a plan to improve fitness. Most people have heard that exercise is good for you. Unfortunately, many people do not follow through with all of the good advice that they have heard. Before presenting some of the various general benefits of exercise and a fitness plan, here are some words of wisdom. According to the American Heart Association, “Being physically active is important to prevent heart disease and stroke,” which are two of America’s biggest threats to long, healthy lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the same benefit and adds, “For people with chronic diseases, physical activity can help manage these conditions and complications.” Say no to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and diseases, and say yes to physical fitness. Before athletes of all ages and levels begin their training and exercising seasons, it is usually a requirement that they undergo a preseason medical examination, also known as a “physical.” You are the athlete, and you should get medical clearance to start your fitness

and protection of God and for success in improving your health and fitness. Make a verbal declaration outlining the conditioning objectives that you will achieve with this plan and with God’s anointing. First, get medical screening/approval. Gently stretch and loosen up leg muscles before each session. Daily drink 2 glasses of water first thing in the morning. Daily drink 1 large glass of water 1 hour before workout. Daily drink 1 large glass of water 10 minutes before workout. Daily drink 1 large glass of water at end of workout. Daily drink no sweetened drinks throughout the day/night. Duration: daily/weekly. 1: walk 15 minutes daily: 2 weeks; do 10 knee bends before bed. 2: walk 15 minutes briskly daily: 2 weeks; do 10 knee bends before bed. 3: walk/jog 20 minutes easy daily: 2 weeks; do 15 knee bends before bed. 4: walk/jog 20 minutes briskly daily: 2 weeks; do 20 knee bends before bed. 5: jog 20 minutes daily: 3 weeks; do 25 knee bends before bed. 6: jog/run 20-35 minutes daily: 5 weeks; do 30 knee bends before bed. *Only progress to the next level if you can handle the current level.*

When we get married, we sow tears of joy, or when we see a loved one getting saved, or the tears of joy when we have our first baby. Those tears are irreplaceable. Then we all sow those sad, heavy tears of heartache, like when a loved one passes away and we feel like we can’t go on, or when we lose one of our pets, such as a dog. When it comes to God’s choosing, He does not base His selection upon what the world see’s outwardly—He looks inward. Listen to the words recorded in the book of 1 Samuel 16:7, ‘Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’ And remember, God has already chosen you from the beginning. So the question isn’t if He will choose you—it is about, will you choose Him. Ephesians 1:4-6 says, “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. and can drain the mental energy people need for everyday activities. As a result, individuals withdraw from social situations, and once withdrawn, depression, cognitive decline, and other related issues set in. Research has demonstrated that people with hearing loss are at a higher risk for developing dementia than those with normal hearing. Scientists believe that being unable to hear deprives the brain of an essential source of stimulation, which contributes to the brain’s decline. Additionally, people with hearing loss tend to become socially isolated, and the loss of social support also damages the brain. Hearing loss can cause a person to feel alone, even while in the presence of others. There is the perception of seeing everyone, but voices cannot be heard clearly. The person with hearing loss can see everyone laughing but not know why—this can cause paranoia and low self-esteem. A 1999 study by the National Council on Aging found that people who have hearing

If you know of someone who no longer wants to go to group activities, dinner, or be involved in social situations, hearing loss may be a factor. Hearing in large groups can be difficult with normal hearing, but it can be nearly impossible for someone with hearing loss. Hearing devices are designed to help in these situations. Today’s technology is able to automatically adapt to the specific situation that the person is in and increase the signal that they want to hear while dampening the noise that they don’t want to hear. Talk to friends or loved ones about having their hearing checked if you feel it is causing them to withdraw from certain activities. Our cutting-edge testing facility has the most upto-date equipment. Once evaluated, our Doctors of Audiology provide counseling on the test results and offer the best solution for everyone’s unique lifestyle and hearing loss. We are

equipped with a state-of-the-art hearing laboratory that allows us to clean, adjust, and fix most hearing devices in house. Ahlberg Audiology is owned and directed by Cleveland native Dr. Tiffany Ahlberg. She resides in Cleveland with her husband Donny and their two children, Braden and Kara. Dr. Ahlberg’s passion for audiology was sparked many years ago by a close family member who was born with severe hearing loss and received hearing aids at the age of 3. As part of her lifelong commitment to and interest in hearing, Dr. Ahlberg strives to ensure that she and her staff are uniquely positioned to address hearing healthcare concerns for patients in her community. All hearing professionals at the practice are licensed Doctors of Audiology. The highly trained audiologists at Ahlberg Audiology are experts in their field and have more cumulative experience in treating hearing loss than any other facility in the Cleveland area. Ahlberg Audiology providers stay current on the latest and most up-to-date technologies by participating in continuing education on a regular basis. The practice has recently expanded its staff to include audiologist Dr. Lynda Klee and audiology assistant Sheri Howell. Patient services are provided by practice manager Beverly Stevison and front office coordinators Vicki Adkins and Summer Hooper. Since 2014, Ahlberg Audiology and Hearing Aid Services has been providing the highest level of hearing care to Cleveland and its surrounding communities. The practice has been voted No. 1 for Audiologist and Hearing Aid Center by the Reader’s Choice “Best of the Best” for five consecutive years, establishing them as the premier destination for hearing healthcare. Offering state-of-the-art technologies and patient care, services include diagnostic hearing evaluations, custom earmolds and earplugs (for musicians, hunting, flying, etc.), cerumen management, hearing conservation, central auditory processing screening, tinnitus treatment, comprehensive hearing device services, and cochlear implant programming. Audiologists at Ahlberg Audiology employ the highest standard of care for each patient, including best practices, which includes individualized programming, and real-ear measurement verification to ensure technological performance and comfort for all hearing aid patients. Ahlberg Audiology is the only facility in Bradley County that contracts with the Veteran’s Administration to provide hearing services for veterans. Individuals with hearing loss often report problems understanding speech but not necessarily an insufficient volume of the sounds around them. This is because speech is made up of a broad range of sounds that vary in pitch and volume, and damage to the hearing mechanism may be quite

have a hearing problem, it is important to have your hearing evaluated by an audiologist. Offering so many different product lines sets this practice apart from others and allows patients to make a choice in amplification that is based on their individual hearing needs. There are hearing devices available for everyone. According to Dr. Ahlberg, “Some people are most interested in price, while others want a superior product for hearing background noise. Some specifically need Bluetooth capabilities, and some want rechargeable devices. Some want tiny, virtually invisible, inthe-ear devices, and others choose to keep the ear canal open with the unit behind the ear. There are options in technology, price, and performance for everyone.” Ahlberg Audiology features virtually all major brands of hearing instruments and specializes in best practices for individualized hearing aid evaluations and fittings. Although many insurances cover hearing testing, coverage for hearing devices or hearing aid-related services continues to evolve. Ahlberg Audiology participates with most major health insurances. Our staff is able to verify benefits for individuals in advance of their appointment so that patients know what to expect prior to their visit. Ahlberg Audiology is conveniently located at 4220 North Ocoee Street in Cleveland, Tennessee, to provide easy access and enhanced technologies for patients. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you or someone you know would benefit from the services of Ahlberg Audiology and Hearing Aid Services, call (423) 641-0956 for an appointment. But then again, I thought, it couldn’t get much worse, could it? Of course it could! The next day, I drove to get a load of hay. Amazingly, when I returned and parked, a strange noise crept out of the hood, and I discovered ANOTHER mechanical failure had come to visit. My truck suddenly lost all ability to steer. It was going nowhere, but at least it was in its parking space. So as this monumental week came to a close, I was the proud owner of a dead laptop, an immovable lawn mower, and an unsteerable truck.

God’s crowning creation that They (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) made in Their image was given a huge responsibility: to subjugate the earth. The Amplified Bible states that subjugate does not mean to destroy but to “act as managers who have authority to run everything as God planned.” This command was given before sin entered the world. God had a job for His male and female to fulfill: manage the world as He planned. Sin definitely complicated that command, but it did not erase it. God still gives us the responsibility to manage His creation as He planned. Again, what did I hear? “STRIKE TWO!” This time, I gave a definite stare at my father, and I could hear my mother yelling from the stands, “PUT YOUR GLASSES ON!” Well, here it came: the final pitch to me. Not high, not outside, but it literally rolled across the plate. It hit the dirt about two feet in front of home plate and rolled across. You guessed it. In a loud, distinct voice, my dad said, “STRIKE THREE!” I just laid my bat down. I said nothing. Since I had made the third out, I walked to my third base position and played the rest of the game. Curried Parsley Chicken

O

by Deana Thompson

ver the past few days, God has been bringing the prophet Hosea across my path again and again. Hosea’s life was to be a picture of how God loved

Israel. Hosea was told by God to marry a prostitute; but after he

Ingredients

married Gomer and had three children by her, she left him and

• ¾ pkg. saltine crackers, finely crushed

returned to her life of prostitution. So what was God’s response?

• 2 Tbsp. dried parsley

He told Hosea to once again get his wife and bring her home; and there, Hosea pledged his love for her (3:3). Throughout the Old Testament, God would save the Israelites from enemy nations, bless them, and provide for them; but soon, they would return to the idols of those nations—idols which hadn’t been able to save that nation from their God’s destruction! And God’s response was to once again gather the nation of Israel under His wings, bless them, and provide for them.

• 1 Tbsp. curry powder • 1 tsp. onion salt • ¼ tsp. pepper • ½ c. butter, melted • 1½ lb. chicken breasts (skinned, boned, and cut into strips)

In Hosea 14, we hear God’s heart cry as Hosea pens, “O Israel! Return to the Lord your God! You have stumbled because of your iniquity. Take words with you and return to the Lord” (v. 1-2). Hosea proclaims that neither nations nor idols can save them; only God can. And then God affirms all the good He is just waiting to pour out on them if they would just return. I hear God saying that to us: “Return to Me! I am just waiting to heal your backsliding, to love you freely, and to bless you immensely!” (14:4). All it takes is for us to begin moving toward Him with words of confession on our lips. And God, in His mercy (14:3), will do the rest.

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven at 375 Degrees Fahrenheit. 2. In a shallow medium bowl, combine the crackers, parsley, curry powder, onion salt, and pepper. Set aside. 3. Pour the melted butter in another shallow bowl. 4. Rinse the chicken and pat it dry. Dip a chicken strip in the melted butter, then roll it in the coating mixture, spooning the mixture over it. 5. Arrange the chicken pieces in a greased 9x13 baking dish so the pieces do not touch. Drizzle any remaining butter on top. 6. Bake for 25 minutes or until tender and no longer pink. NOTE: You can bake this at 350 for 35-40 minutes if you desire to bake it with another dish that cooks at this temperature.

It was the most beautiful singing I’d ever heard. I felt so much peace. My conscious mind slowly fought its way to the surface. I thought, “That radio alarm has come on after I turned it off last night!” Now I was awake, so I slowly opened my eyes and reached over to turn the radio back off so that my sons across the hall wouldn’t wake up.
