Gò0dNews from the Pastor’s Desk

The Greatest Gift-Giver hen the holy child was born in rustic surroundings near the shepherds’ fields in Bethlehem, few knew heaven’s greatest GIFT had come down to the earth. Mary wrapped “the gift” in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger. Approximately thirty-three years later, the Roman soldiers cruelly “unwrapped the gift,” stripping Him of His clothing and subjecting Him to humiliation and torture. But it was all God’s plan unfolding: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). God gave the best He had. He gave His only Son. He gave precious, sinless blood. No greater love could have been expressed. No greater sacrifice could have been made. No greater gift could have been given; yet more gifts were yet to come. Forty days after the stone rolled away, the Son of God “ascended on high”—not for His own well-being, but to receive “gifts for men” (Psalm 68:18, KJV). How amazing! Usually, great liberators are showered with gifts from the grateful masses. Instead, this heaven-sent Liberator promised to pour out numerous gifts on those who simply call on His name. In the New Testament Paul further explained: “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints…till we all come… unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13, KJV). So, heaven’s King gifted the world with empowered representatives who would proclaim liberating truth to the multitudes. But once again, the Gift-giver was only getting started. Before He left the world He confided to His followers: “…All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). Then He promised to transfer the gift, saying: “…Tarry in the city of Jerusalem, until you are endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). Like a wind-swept fire, the Spirit rushed in the upper room, granting believers power over sin, power over satanic spirits, power over the flesh, power over sickness, power to witness, power to change the world and power to ultimately conquer even the curse of death.

6 // December 2021

Yet, this was no solitary gift. Like a pomegranate containing many seeds, all encased in reddish gel, so this “gift of power” contained numerous subordinate gifts— each purchased by and “encased in” the precious blood of Jesus, like: • THE GIFT OF GRACE— (Ephesians 4:7) • THE GIFT OF SALVATION FAITH— (Ephesians 2:8) • THE GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS— (Romans 5:17) • THE GIFT OF PEACE— (John 14:26)

• THE GIFT OF JOY— (John 15:11) • THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD— (John 17:8) • THE GIFTS OF GLORY, PERFECTION AND ONENESS WITH THE FATHER— (John 17:22-23) • THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT— (Acts 2:38) • THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE— (Romans 6:23) How should we react to such abundant generosity from God? Every day of our lives, we should take a moment to gaze heavenward and gratefully echo Paul’s enthusiastic conclusion: “Thank God for His gift that is too wonderful for words!” (2 Cor. 9:15, CEV).

different, but if you take a moment and look at the passage in Isaiah 9:6, the writer tells us that “a son is given.” So, here’s my big brain thought: since God is the great gift giver, we have the wonderful opportunity to receive this gift.

Mary received this wonderful gift from God with a big, open heart. Both of my kiddos—one is twelve and the other is ten—have said yes to Jesus being the leader of their lives! I’m a very happy dad. You see, once we receive God’s wonderful gift of Jesus, God doesn’t stop there. Since God is the great gift giver, He continues to give us love, joy and peace. And as my two kiddos grow in wisdom, I get a front row seat to watch these wonderful gifts be unwrapped in their lives every day. This is the best time of the year! Christmas lights hanging from houses, hot cocoa with tiny marshmallows floating on top, and peppermint sticks, but the music is the most special of them all. All of these songs and carols pointing to this one amazing moment in history— the birth of Jesus. You can hear these

or many people, the holiday season is a time of celebration and reliving

past traditions. We see Christmas movies on TV, hear carolers singing, peruse all the holiday gift options, but for some people, especially seniors, the holidays can be a time of frustration

and depression. There are many reasons that people may lapse into the “holiday blues” —illness, injury, frustration with the aging process, loss of a spouse, or just seasonal depression—but what really matters is that you find ways to prevent depression from happening. With the holiday season in full swing, consider some of the options listed below to help support yourself or your loved ones. Stop setting unrealistic expectations—It’s easy to want to do everything, but give yourself a break! It is essential to lower your expectations for the holidays and avoid putting unrealistic pressure on yourself. Stay active & eat healthy—Try doing something new! I find joy in Christmas and winter, just as the song says,

God speaking to us all.

“’Tis the Season to be jolly.” We are all in such a rush. We should slow down and take the time to find joy every day—like the same type of joy that we get from putting up a Christmas tree. Even though Christmas only comes once a year, every time we put our tree up, I find such joy. It reminds me of when Jesus died and rose again in such splendor, the same way a tree is cut down to its death to be placed upward again, standing tall and showing off its beauty for the world to see. As we place gifts around the tree—knowing how happy it is going to make someone—I am reminded of the greatest gift that Jesus gave to us: His life, His love, and His forgiveness. Once we have the tree decorated, we place it in a window so the world can see how beautiful it is with all its lights shining. We, as Christians, need to stand tall and shine bright all year round for the world to see, not just at Christmas time. So, do not get sad when it is time

Gò0dNews for Everyone

The Glorious Purpose of Prayer hough I have known for a long time that there are cracks in my armor, it was not until recently that I discovered to what extent. The largest of them is the most surprising. I have always considered myself rather adept at prayer but now must humbly admit otherwise. The vulnerability created by my intercessory failings is quite eye-opening. The issue is not one of consistency or sincerity. I have always viewed prayer as central in my walk with Jesus. The culprit is inadequate application. I have taken what is a dynamic means of grace and repeatedly reduced it to a singular objective. My beseeching, to the exclusion of almost everything else, has revolved around the relief from life’s daily burdens. There is certainly a place for such sentiment when I seek the Lord’s face. He wants that which weighs upon me to be offered up. But, if prayer is not deployed beyond this isolated need, it as spiritual weaponry will never defend as intended. My shield against the darts of the evil one will continue to be compromised, unnecessarily exposing my soul to harm. Compare my petitions to Paul’s: “And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9-10, ESV). What Paul desired for the church in Colossae was nothing short of massive. He was not petitioning the Lord for a conflict-free existence. He was not asking that their difficulties be removed. What Paul sought for the Colossians was the quintessential purpose of prayer: to intimately know Jesus and His will. There is no higher aim. He wanted them to understand the extraordinary designs the Lord has for their lives. It is what transcends the hardships and leads to a Christ-exalting life of obedience and faithfulness. Paul’s approach to intercession has slowly infiltrated mine; the operative word here being “slowly.” I continue

20 // December 2021

to surrender my daily challenges but have begun doing so in the context of Jesus’s larger plan for my life. And not coincidentally, I have become less concerned with the circumstantial and thus more apt to fight the temptation of fear and anxiety. This has freed me to start pursuing His aims with greater intentionality. In other words, the cracks in my armor are beginning to seal.

While I still have much to learn, I am discovering that steady application of the practical bears fruit. I have instituted a new routine, for example, where—prior to bowing my head—time is spent reviewing a note I recently scribbled on the inside cover of my Bible. It reads as follows. “Request from Jesus: I would desire what He desires; I would love what He loves; I would despise what He despises; I would find increasing joy in what honors Him; I would follow Him in faith.” Though it felt mechanical at first—and still does to a degree—these themes help prepare my mind. They get the focus off of me and onto the Lord. May my prayer life and yours be an aggressive pursuit of knowing Jesus and His glorious will for our lives. And may the quest have the intended effect: a walk that becomes fully pleasing to Him. About The Author

The moment their feet hit the water, all the water piled up in a heap a great distance downstream, and the Israelites were able to pass through. When all the people made it to the other side, the Lord asked Joshua to get one person from each tribe to collect stones from the bottom of the riverbed. Joshua 4:21 says, “In the future, when your

peration Compassion is a domestic and international humanitarian organization headquartered in Cleveland, TN. In the last 21 years, Operation Compassion has

responded to 85 natural disasters and humanitarian crises in 71 countries and 48 of the 50 United States. Operation Compassion was founded by David Lorency, who spent over 40 years in ministry. David devoted his life to blessing the poor and underprivileged around the world and in his own community. In 2000, Operation Compassion was founded with the goal of transporting crucial, life saving supplies to disaster areas across the world. Over the past 20 years, Operation Compassion has responded to every major natural disaster in the United States and most international disasters. To date, Operation Compassion has given aid in the wake of natural disasters, including notable catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Sally, The Moore, Oklahoma Super Tornado, the Indonesian Tsunami, and the Haitian earthquakes.

supplies to medical mission organizations in developing countries, and partnering with various other local organizations to provide community relief and assistance to the homeless. These partnerships also help make Operation Compassion one of the most effective and efficient charities in the nation. With less than one percent overhead, 99 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to relief efforts. This non-profit business model and years of success resulted in Forbes magazine rating Operation Compassion as one of the top five most efficient charities in America. The heart of Operation Compassion has always been the heart of David Lorency—to provide hope for people in times

Operation Compassion transports an average of over 340 shipping containers of supplies and 180 semi-trailers to domestic relief sites annually. These containers and trucks carry critical relief supplies and basic living necessities such as clothes, water, food, medical supplies, hygiene supplies, and construction materials. These supplies are shipped to victims of disasters across the world and across the U.S.—to the tune of 98,000 people internationally every month. While disaster relief is Operation Compassion’s core impetus, the mission and vision has expanded and reached new levels. Operation Compassion works closely with multiple partners to provide basic necessities and goods to poverty-stricken communities and individuals across America and around the world. Individuals, churches, humanitarian organizations, and Fortune 500 companies help Operation Compassion serve thousands of impoverished people domestically every month. On the shores of Indonesia after a cataclysmic tsunami, Operation Compassion provided shelter and clothes to those who lost everything. In the heart of Detroit, David would give food to the hungry. In the heart of West Virginia coal-country, Operation Compassion continually gives food to the hungry. For over 20 years, Operation Compassion has carried the heart of David Lorency. parents arrive. This particular day, I waited and watched everyone else’s children run to their cars. Mine were nowhere in sight. As the teachers began to wave traffic through, I pointed to the name hanging from the rear-view mirror to signify my children had not been released to me. I was instructed to pull over to the handicap parking while my children were located and escorted to me. In my eagerness to greet them, I waited by the van with the doors already open in anticipation of their arrival. As I greeted each of my children, I gave them hugs and noticed the weight each carried in their respective backpacks. They were eager to climb inside but struggled under the weight and bulk of their sagging packs. Straight away, I lifted the load of each, which afforded them more ease. Instinctively, each of them quickly surrendered their packs once they realized the burden was lifted. They demonstrated there was no

There is no need to carry the burden that someone else is bearing. I need this reminder in the season I am in. I find myself stumbling under the weight of it all—unable to carry on under the pressure, bogged down in despair, and just plain tired.

This is one of those funny and thought-provoking stories that I love to look back on. Living with a disability has taught me a lot. One particularly difficult lesson is that I’m living in a world that wasn’t designed with people like me in mind. I am reminded of this reality when I look back on this story from freshman year and others like it. Buildings with stairs, stores with high shelves, and restrooms with narrow doorways are just a few of the many obstacles that I have to face. These are usually small inconveniences that I easily overcome. But there are some days or weeks where this simply isn’t the case. This week was one of those weeks. Physical pains and mental stressors made inconveniences feel insurmountable. On top of that, it can be difficult having conversations like this because I feel like people, even those that care deeply about me, don’t understand how it feels living in a world that isn’t

John Wycliffe (1324-1384) was born in Wycliffe,

Yorkshire, England, and was named after the city of his birth. He, like most boys in England, was surrounded by religious hypocrisy and social upheaval. When he was a young adult, some representatives of the Catholic Church collected five times the amount of taxes necessary. Wycliffe opposed such unjust actions in the church and stood up for the poor man. The church saw him

interfering with their business. As time further progressed, he spoke and wrote about other evils and false doctrines in the church. Later, he would translate the Bible into English and believed the Bible was for the “common man.” This idea was another strike against him. We should reflect and look back at all of the good things that God has done in our lives. We are blessed and God has been faithful. I can think of several “…but God” instances in my life when something terrible could have happened… but God... But for Jesus dying on the Cross and by accepting Him as my Lord and Savior at a very young age in life, I shudder to think where I might be. I didn’t deserve His grace and mercy but He gave it freely. I always want to remember His complete work on the Cross and His great love for me. It felt so right! Matthew 7:7 says “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you.” If you find yourself in a cycle you can’t get out of, turn to God.
