There Are No Do-Overs, But... MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

R

ecently I was chatting online with some teachers and parents, debating the question of who is responsible (or should be) for teaching kids about personal finance and basic life skills, including balancing a checkbook, making a monthly budget, etc. Some teachers in the discussion were understandably exasperated that a growing number of parents expected schools to teach these skills to their children, instead of the parents doing it at home. I fully agree that the primary responsibility of preparing kids for life—which includes money management near the top of the list—lies with parents first and foremost. Unfortunately, many parents are increasingly unable or unwilling to do this, so they ask (demand) that the schools offer personal finance courses. And I welcome that suggestion whole-heartedly. For one thing, some parents may know little to nothing about finances, and their own finances may be a disaster as a result. Secondly, parents may know a bit about opening a checking and savings account, but not know how to open a Roth IRA account or how to explain amortization on a home mortgage. Schools could offer a course (or a few courses—the more the merrier, in my opinion) as an option instead of trigonometry or calculus for students who are either not college-bound or whose planned college majors don’t require them to take classes about “math with no numbers” as I derisively like to refer to those Greek letter equations (yuck). For my money (pun intended), a course or two on personal finance and investing would better serve many middle school and high school students. Heck, make it mandatory! In the past several years, I’ve periodically taken a few minutes at the start of class to give crash courses to my

10 // April 2021

college students in compound interest, the importance of saving and investing when you’re young, why a Roth IRA is magical, and how “house hacking” by being a live-in landlord can start them on a quick path to wealth. I tie these lessons to various Scriptures, usually from Proverbs, since I truly believe wise financial management is an integral part of a Christian life. I often close by saying, “If only some teacher had taught me these lessons when I was a teenager . . . and now you have no excuse!” The truth is, there are no “do-overs.” But you can teach younger people whom you care about so that they can learn from your mistakes (or from financial ignorance in your youth). Moreover, you can commit to starting today making wiser choices, financially speaking. Speaking of “do-overs”, consider jotting a list of your most memorable money mistakes; doing this might inspire you to corner a youngster and teach them why you made a bad decision and how he or she can avoid doing the same. When I say money “mistakes,” I don’t mean not buying Amazon in the 1990’s. I’m talking about common blunders that many people make regularly—leasing a new car in order to look cool at a red light, paying the minimum balance every month on a high interest credit card, refusing to open bills and stuffing them in drawers hoping they will somehow pay themselves, eating out seven nights in a row instead of making a trip to the grocery store, swiping a debit card unsure if the purchase will clear because you haven’t balanced your checkbook all year (and being crushed with $30 “insufficient funds” fees several times per month as a result). These are lessons we can learn from, as well as teach the next generation. Whose job is it—the schools or the parents? Why not both?

The Bible tells us that Satan convinced one-third of the angelic host to accept his word over the word of their loving Creator (Revelation 12:4). Imagine the power of the lies Satan must have told to convince perfect angels living in a perfect environment that his government would be superior to that of Jesus Christ. And as soon as the rebels were kicked out of heaven, they came to earth and began the exact same pattern of deception, leading to the fall of humanity (Revelation 12:12). Satan told Eve the lies he had used to convince other angels to rebel. “God’s word can’t be trusted.” “There is no real consequence for sin.” “God is holding back something good from you because He is selfish.” “You can be like God, you can be holy apart from God and His law, if you will follow me” (Genesis 3:1-5). Satan’s greatest weapon has always been deception.

How does Jesus want Christians to dispel disinformation? Uplift Christ. Uplift the cross of Calvary. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples

My eyes still sting from the pain of the tears that burned my cheeks day after day in the past couple of months. God reminds me that He knows the realness of betrayal Himself. As Jesus stood alone, headed to the cross, every person who swore they loved Him was nowhere to be found. If Jesus was betrayed, I will be also. He didn’t lose His focus, and neither will I. Grandpa and the Corn Field

G

by Charles Finney

randpa was not what you might call a religious man. He did tell me once how he thought about the hereafter. He said, “Since I have gotten older, no matter where I am—in the living room, bedroom, in the kitchen, or out at the barn, I am always asking myself: 'Now, what am I here after?'" Now Grandpa was a man that believed in giving his ten percent. He actually once gave a tithe of more than ten percent. He gave of his farmland. He gave, at no charge, about ten acres. Being what he said was his best cornfield, to a local congregation to build a church. The land being creek feed, he said his harvest of corn on that part of the farm was not bad. But he hoped the church would bring in a new crop of folks for Grandma to socialize with and if they wanted, they could use the creek for baptizing. His closest neighbor and his wife were over a mile away. Now, Grandpa did not always go inside the church. Some of the church folks could see him sitting under a shade tree outside the building. He would be there head bowed, listening to the preacher and the choir. When I asked him why he would sit under the tree, he replied “I don't always know God is inside the building, but out here under the tree He shows me all His wonderful works. He lets me see Him in nature. Besides, the choir would some times sing off key and my chickens could cackle better than them, but the birds outside never missed a note, how beautiful they would sing.” I remember Grandma reading me the Bible in Psalm 104:12, “By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.” God sends special birds each Sunday just to sing for me. But one Sunday, there were no birds. He said, “So I decided to go inside the church. There I met a man. Not in a physical sense, but I could feel His presence inside me. Then I prayed to God, and He accepted me and I accepted Him.” Job 33:26-28, “He shall pray unto God, and he will be favorable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy:

22 // April 2021

for he will render unto man his righteousness. He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not. He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.” Grandpa got baptized in the creek. The last time my Grandpa was inside the church was at his funeral. A light shown through a window near his casket. Birds were singing. Romans 12:15-16, “Rejoice with

those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.” Grandpa's last thoughts on his old cornfield was, “You know on a good year I might get 40 bushel of corn an acre over there. Just think, now they are harvesting more than 50 believers a year that come to know Jesus as their personal Savior. The preaching is not too bad and best of all, the birds sing harmoniously with the choir.” Psalm 1:3, “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” What’s planted in your cornfield?

When you discipline a child, you are teaching them to learn to follow rules or correct misbehavior in a positive way. Punishment may stop a certain behavior in the moment, but it is not likely to change behavior for the long term. When children are disciplined in positive ways, they are learning what expectations are and the accountability for natural and logical consequences that follow. Positive discipline leads to healthy self-esteem because it puts children in control of their behavior and teaches new skills such as self-control and self-regulation. The child will also learn that behavior is a form of communication,

at the worst possible time. Once again, preventative maintenance can catch a bad capacitor before it becomes a major problem. A technician from Herb’s Heating and Air will complete a thorough 18-point checklist to ensure your HVAC is running right for just $125: that’s the outdoor unit and the heater as well, so you won’t have to worry about an early cold snap in the fall either! They will conduct visual inspections over all the electrical work and wiring in the units and check all the refrigerant to make sure the pressure is where it should be. They can also tell you if your filter needs changing. According to Darren, “If people don’t change their filters, they get clogged up, which causes the unit to trip out, and they won’t run. Check them every three months, and if you have animals, definitely check them monthly.” Even something as simple as an air filter can be costing you money! If your HVAC is already having problems or getting up there in years, Herb’s Heating and Air will install a new one for you as well! They primarily install Tempstar by Carrier, although they work on all kinds of systems. Darren said, “Our brand is a local supply house that sells that brand, and if there is repair or warranty work, the parts are local and don’t cost anything on shipping.” Also, buying local helps support the Cleveland community! Replacing your HVAC is a huge project that can cost a lot. Fortunately, Darren and his team are the right professionals to keep costs as low as possible. “The people we use have lots of experience, and they’re able to install equipment quicker than others,” Darren said. “That cuts down on labor time on install, and because we stick with one brand, we get special pricing, which gives us more of a discount and allows us to offer it cheaper than other companies.” If your HVAC system is 10-plus years old, it’s a good idea to start planning to replace it soon. Even the factories recommend replacing the whole thing instead of a repair because the government is phasing out the old refrigerant anyway, and it’s better to get a new system up and running than to continue patching up the same old unit time and time again. Darren would like to give a big “Thank you!” to all his current customers. “Thank you for allowing us to take

care of your comfort needs! For some, we’ve been doing service for over 30 years, and we wouldn’t be able to take care of our families and our employees and their families if it weren’t for [our customers] trusting us with their comfort needs.” Herb’s Heating and Air services all of Cleveland and Polk County, as far south as Ooltewah, and as far north as Athens. You can call their office number, (423) 479-5183, contact them through Facebook messenger, or go to their website, herbshvac.com, for more information. They offer free quotes, and they’ll make sure you’re taken care of. So this spring, if your air can’t handle the heat, don’t reach for the thermostat: reach for the phone! Call Herb’s Heating and Air, and let the professionals take care of you.

My priorities often include my relationships with God and my family. I believe it is fitting to speak of relationships to address the subject of grieving and how to heal, regardless of which type of grief we suffer. Abraham Lincoln loved his sons dearly, and in 1862, his beloved son Willie died, which brought the President great pain. He quietly laid his head upon the desk and cried bitterly for his loss—yet the nation was in turmoil and needed him to remain in charge to direct all the actions and changes necessary for the civil unrest to be somehow resolved, or at least brought to a better place for all the people. Former President Trump, while fighting for our nation against many oppositions—while bringing relief for the fires, storms, disease, and civil turmoil—found himself suffering the loss of his brother, yet he marched forward and persevered through these battles. Ezekiel, a prophet and priest in Scripture, is advised by God of his wife’s pending death (a woman who loved and supported him) yet was told not to mourn

Who’s In Control?

“W

by Sue Lavigne

hat areas of your life do you have control over? Be specific.” This was one of the questions asked in a step study

class for Celebrate Recovery that I was attending. It is a very good question. Many of us would casually answer, “Yes, I have control over my life, my attitude, and maybe my family.” But as I thought about that question more, I asked myself, “Do I really have control over anything in my life?”

of control from a new perspective. Do we really need faith and trust in God when all is well in our world? My trust in God grew more after I had been unemployed for 30 months. It continues to grow as my COVID isolation leads me to listen for His words to speak direction and purpose. Perhaps you are in a similar situation where your world seems to be turned upside down. These words from Proverbs 3:5-6 have helped me through this season of losses:

We have all heard the stories of people who have had their world turned upside down by a tragic event such as a divorce, job loss, the death of a close friend or family member, auto accident, or cancer diagnosis. These events can change our lives in a moment, making us feel that our lives are spinning “out of control.” However, the question remains: “Did we really have control in the first place?” Later in the study, we were asked, “What have you been able to turn over to God?” Again, I answered honestly that I was able to turn over my finances, my job, and my ministry. At the time, I thought my finances, my job, and even my ministry were secure. I had a good job, was not in debt, was serving at my church, and was a leader at Celebrate Recovery. Then slowly, over the last four years, all my security fell away. In February 2017, I developed a chronic pain issue that limited my normal activities. In June 2018, I lost my job because our department was closing. Despite all my losses, I was still active with Celebrate Recovery and my church, but then COVID-19 stopped all my ministry opportunities. My world turned upside down until every part of me that I thought I controlled was gone.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do and He will show you which path to take.” Although my circumstances have not changed, my perspective has changed. I know that trusting in God means relying on Him completely. I can now answer the question with better clarity. “Who is in control?” God is and always has been in control, and I trust Him with every aspect of my life, even when I do not understand in which direction it is going. How about you?

a very humbling experience. So I have looked at the question

As we sense spring in the Spirit, there is a longing for a season of new growth in our daily walk with the Lord. He longs to give life to those things that we thought had been dead: promises, dreams, and goals that have never been fulfilled or the feeling of being stuck in the season of dryness. You may have found yourself loitering there longer than you intended. Sometimes we feel that the Lord isn’t anywhere to be found. Yet He is so close to us during those times of heartache, struggle, devastation, hurt, loneliness, death, rejection, and fear. He tells us in Isaiah 41:10, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold

Colored Deviled Eggs by Mary Anderson Beard

F

amily dinners are my absolute favorite thing to plan at the holidays. Since we are

Instructions

usually at church before sunrise on Easter

sunday and don’t have a lot of extra time cooking, we love to serve lots of salads and pretty spring time dishes, including pastel deviled eggs! With this month being Easter month, I wanted to share a cute recipe that we look forward to every year for our family dinner.

1. Boil eggs (I bring mine to a boil for 5 minutes and then turn off the heat and let them sit in the hot water for about 20 minutes--or til I remember them sitting there LOL). 2. Cool eggs; cut in ½ and separate yolks and whites (just like you normally do for deviled eggs). 3. Make as many colors as you would like (I usually do about 4-5) drop food coloring in cups filled with water and place egg white halves in desired colored water. When making colored Easter eggs, you would normally add vinegar to make the color more intense but for this recipe you won’t want to do that. You will just let the egg white haves sit in the colored water about 30 minutes, so make sure you have enough water in each cup so that you can color all the egg white halves at the same time. Otherwise this could take you a LONG time. 4. After the eggs have reached the desired consistency, take them out of the water and just place them on a paper towel lined plate to dry a little. 5. Mash and mix egg yolks, add desired amount of mayonnaise and if you want to add mustard and relish. Salt and pepper to taste.

Ingredients • 12 large eggs

6. Spoon yolk mixture into each egg white halve until all the mixture is used up. 7. Serve on a pretty platter!

• Mayonnaise

• Mustard, optional

• Salt & pepper to taste 42 // April 2021

“There are worse problems than dead ones,” she said. “It’s worse if you have to think they didn’t make it to Heaven.” Then she told me how to accept Christ as my Savior. She attended my baptism when I was 8. Now I know what it must have meant to her. We buried her when I was 14. Months later, my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer, and I faced a bully who tried to kill me. I felt the sting of her death more then than when we buried her.
