Last day will be Jan. 1, 2010 By Amy Condra acondra@goochlandgazette.com

Fire-Rescue Chief Ken Brown announced last Friday that he will be retiring from couny service as of Jan. 1 of next year. “While I look forward to the next chapter of my life I will be saddened to no longer be working with the many good people that I have worked closely with in the past,” he wrote in an e-mail to county employees. “We have made great strides in the past seven years as evidenced by the many accomplishments we have achieved and I know the organization will continue to be a mover and a shaker in the region,” he added.

Deeds campagins in Goochland Sunday By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Democratic candidate for governor Creigh Deeds made a quick campaign visit to Goochland Sunday night, greeting about 60 supporters at the home of Harriet and Clark Meader. Deeds, a state senator from Bath County running against Republican Bob McDonnell for the state’s top job, cited narrowing polls as proof that victory was within reach. “We can get this done,” Deeds told the crowd, who said he had outraised his opponent by $2 million since the Democratic primary. Deeds defeated Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran in the Democratic primary, while McDonnell won his nomination at a convention with no real opposition.

said Chester Brooks of Amherst County. “But nobody really raises it anymore,“ added Calvin Turner of Varina, noting that this year’s crop came from a school in Petersburg. Many of the skills shown at Field Day have faded into obsolescence, as have many of its permanent structures. As the once-rural community of Short Pump developed into a bustling area of corporate commerce, old businesses such as the Short Pump Grocery and the Short Pump Transmission Shop were moved to the Field Day show grounds. Springfield Baptist Church, built in

1887 in Henrico County and one of only a few black churches from its era that remain locally, was moved to the grounds in 2007. A new attraction this year is the Rocketts Voting Precinct House from Sandy Hook. The small wooden house was built around 1890 and was used as a voting precinct until the early 1960s. A few of the demonstrators are simply showing off what they still do as their day job. At the blacksmith shop, Scott Hingley, who grew up in Short Pump and now lives in Nelson County, has crafted a career forging steel gates, signs and old-fashioned hardware for restoration projects. “In the old days, there was a blacksmith shop on every corner. Everything

was made by hand in those days, but the Industrial Revolution changed all that,“ Hingley said. “Not too many people do it now—which is a good thing, if you make your living at it.“ Hingley said he remembers Short Pump when it was still rural; he even went to school with some of the boys who once worked at the Short Pump Transmission Shop. “I’m glad they preserved some of it,“ he said.

Trent’s son, Stevie M. Trent, pastor of Center Union Baptist Church, paid tribute to his father. “We thank God for his example,” said the younger Trent, who said his father taught his children responsibility, caring, sharing and sacrifice “by his actions, not just his words.” Donald Trent was born in Cumberland County and served in the U.S. Army. He earned a Bachelor of Theology degree from Richmond Virginia Seminary and a Master of Divinity degree from Fredericksburg Bible Institute. He has been pastor of Second Union Baptist Church since 1973. “I have an easy task,” said Hobbs as she introduced keynote speaker Sekou Shabaka. “I’m introducing my friend and mentor of 28 years.” Shabaka grew up in Norfolk and attended Norfolk State University. He graduated from Virginia State University with a degree in Psychology and later studied at VCU, the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania before embarking on a 25-year career working in Virginia with troubled youth and adults and in community programs. He later worked in Tacoma, Washington and San Francisco, where he was part of a community group that forged a truce between gang members. Shabaka referenced the recent vandalism at Trent’s church, where a number of windows were broken, both in the church and the historic Rosenwald School. “When your windows were broken, that should say to us

all our windows were broken,” said Shabaka, who tied in the incident with the long history of the civil rights movement, calling up memories of leaders such as Adam Clayton Powell, Martin Luther King, Malcom X and Nat Turner. “When I heard it I was quite saddened,” said Shabaka. “So I honor you. It says you are doing something right.” Shabaka then talked about the future. “We have an obligation and responsibility to develop our children to their greatest potential,” he said, painting a picture of some of the cruelty and oppression black Americans have faced in the past. He then cited projects such as the Innocence Project and Habitat for Humanity as examples of progress. “We need to know the history to remove the barriers,” said Shabaka, after reminding the audience of past discrimination and the opposition

Another way to work...

Many of us who spend our days in offices have grown used to an automated routine of clicking computer keys beneath florescent light bulbs. Work is done in cubicles, and messages are sent by telephones and texts. This is nothing like the work settings portrayed at last weekend’s Field Day of the Past, an event that celebrates our county’s industrial heritage. About a hundred years ago, the Industrial Revolution introduced Goochland to new ways of streamlining agriculture and indusAmy Condra try. So, for example, sorghum cane was still raised and harvested, but then it was fed into a machine that would press out its juice. And people still touched what they produced—they raised the cane, stripped it with a knife, lifted it to the press… As I watched the men and women at Field Day chop wood and make soap, I realized that I envy that proximity to product. Today a lot of what we create is vague and abstract: Proposals. Budgets. Plans. These creations are important, especially in a society where information has become a commodity as vital as oil. But being outside last weekend, wandering across Field Day’s 50 acres and listening to the rattling of tractors and the shouts of workers, was revitalizing. This autumn, I want to step away from my laptops and cell phones a little more often. A lot of the labor that we do with our hands—cooking, cleaning, carving pumpkins, for example!— lends itself to a kind of camaraderie that we lose when we’re plugged into a machine. Sure, people still gather around computer monitors to check out a new graphic or youtube video—but sometimes it would be good to gather around something you can lay your hands on, something you can pick up, and turn over, and hand to someone else. So that when you do flip the switch back to “on,” you’ll be doing so with a relaxed mind and a refreshed perspective!

A pass for lying? I would like to comment on your letter “Repairing the Damage”. You criticize congressman Joe Wilson for his “You lie!” comment but give President Obama a pass for lying. Both actions show a lack of respect for the office they hold, which leads to the question, do you give our president a pass because he is black? Is it possible that 85 percent of the black community voted for Obama because of his race? Is the Democratic party using race as a political weapon to dodge issues? Where is your outrage? Next, you insinuate that crime motivated by race is worse than crime motivated by other reasons. Crime is detestable whatever the reason. Law cannot change a person’s heart and make someone moral, law can only punish immoral behavior. If you are feeling hopeless you need only look to Jesus. Scott Blunk Columbia

Goochland electoral history didn’t get in the way of Deeds, however, as he urged the crowd to make a last minute push in the 44 days remaining before the election. “We’re going to be outspent but not outworked,” said Deeds, as he exhorted Democrats to make up the difference by grassroots action to increase turnout. Deeds got a pleasant surprise as his daughter Rebecca greeted him when he arrived at the Meaders’ home for the event. She had traveled from Charlottesville to surprise him. In an interview with The Gazette, Deeds maintained that he would not raise taxes in the general fund, but would sign a bill that raises money for transportation. “I’m open to any potential revenue source as long as it has a nexus to transportation and does not cut general fund responsibilities like education,” said Deeds. That stance has drawn criticism from some quarters, as Deeds has refrained from unveiling specific revenue gener-

n a beautiful Friday night, the Bulldogs took to the home turf to face the Foxes of King George in their last game before entering Jefferson District play. Goochland Head Coach Joe Fowler’s use of two quarterbacks may have been the key to the Bulldogs in a 35-12 victory over the Foxes. Junior B.J. Clark shared QB duties with regular starter, senior Matthew Henley. “We’re trying to give different kids different reps,” Fowler said after the game. “We do it in practice everything, and we’ll probably continue to do it the rest of the season.” The Bulldogs received on the kickoff, and immediately gained ground

into King George territory. On a second-and-seven at the nine yard-line, the handoff went to Dustin Plummer and fans watched as he earned a first down just shy of the goal line. Then with eight minutes left in the quarter, Henley scrambled into the end zone for the Bulldogs first touchdown. After King George made little progress with the ball, punting it away on a fourth down, Goochland again took over, quickly driving closer to the Foxes’ end of the field. A second-and-one handoff to Plummer gave the Bulldogs another first down, and a horse collar penalty call on King George moved Goochland to the five yard-line. The handoff went to David McKenna, and Goochland added another six points. After a two-point conversion,

the Bulldogs led 14-0. Midway through the second quarter, Fowler put Clark in as quarterback. With 6:49 left on the clock, King George took over the ball at their 10 yard-line, but didn’t get far. Clark immediately intercepted Foxes’ Chris Thompson’s pass and ran for another Goochland touchdown. Colby Cooke’s extra point took the score to 21-0 King George then started their drive at the 26 yard-line. On fourth-and-nine on the 24, King George decided to go for it. Chip Davis received the pass, and scored the Foxes first touchdown of the night. “In the second half, the offensive line took over and opened up a lot

of holes and did a great job running through,” Fowler said of King George. Henley came back in as quarterback in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs were once again successful in the King George end zone. McKenna carried the ball to the 10 yard-line. King George’s personal foul penalty moved the Bulldog’s ball to the five yard-line. On a third-and-two, senior Willie Ezell easily moved in for the touchdown. Cooke’s extra point was good, and Goochland extended their lead to 28-6. The fourth quarter saw more excitement for the Bulldog fans. Grant Gilchrist got the first down, and Plummer rushed for 34 and another touchdown on a second-and-

eleven. Cooke got the extra point, taking the score to 35-6. King George went on to score one more time, with a touchdown from Chris Bell. It wasn’t enough to get close to Goochland’s lead, and the Bulldogs added another win to their record. Plummer finished the night with 121 rushing yards and the Bulldogs had 359 total yards rushing. “We played well on both sides,” Fowler said. “Coach Summit had the kids prepared, and defense played really well. King George has a very athletic group of kids, but we stayed true to what we had to do and got it done.” With a record of 3-0, Coach see Football > 17

Strong Invitational field highlights FALL KICK OFF SALE X-Country festival at Maymont SEPT. 23RD - SEPT. 30TH Best cross country field in the U.S. so far this year From press release

With the high school team entry period now closed, it is clear that the September 25-26, 2009 U.S. Army XCountry Festival at Maymont is once again a must-do meet for many of the country’s most competitive programs. “This is as good an invitational field as we’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot,” meet director Dan Ward says. “This is the strongest multi-state cross country field in the U.S. to date this year.” Over 250 teams represent-

ing almost 90 schools from 12 states and the District of Columbia have registered over 2,300 runners. Teams from California, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. will travel to Richmond for the Sports Backers-organized event. High school team events are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, while open events, which include a one-mile kids run for elementary schoolers, and an open 5k will be held Friday, Sept. 25 starting at 5:30 p.m. And the open 13.1-mile half marathon will start at 7 a.m.

on Saturday, followed by an open 3k race for middle school boys and girls at 9 a.m. The highlight of the high school meet is the Girls and Boys Invitational races on Saturday morning. In the Girls Invitational at 10:15 a.m., two of the top ten teams in the U.S., Blacksburg, Virginia (#8) and Tatnall, Delaware (#10), headline a field that includes many teams that are rated among the tops in their state, including Maggie Walker (#2), Archmere Academy, Delaware (#2), Brookwood, Georgia (#3), East Chapel Hill, North Carolina (#3) and Lee-Davis (#6). On the boys’ side, the Invitational field at 11:05 a.m.

is highlighted by Blacksburg, the #2-ranked team in Virginia. They will be challenged by three outstanding teams from Delaware (Archmere Academy, Salesianum School and Tatnall), New Jersey (Cherokee), Tennessee (Morristown-West) and Virginia (including Grafton, James River, and Jamestown). The sessions are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19 and again on Monday, Dec. 21 at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive.

Pre-registration for the information sessions is encouraged. Participants can register or obtain additional information by calling Georgia Phillips at 501-7496 or Tony Jones at 501-4245.

Participants will receive information on a variety of topics, including the special needs of foster children; what it takes to be a successful foster parent; working with DSS staff and the biological parents of a foster child; and the application and approval process. There will be a questionand-answer period as well.

Foster parents are “professional parents,” available around-the-clock to bring children into their homes and provide temporary and potentially long-term care in a safe, stable environment. Parents must be at least 21, have their own source of income and sufficient living space in their house or apartment to care for a child. They can be single or married, with or without children of their own, male or female, and from all backgrounds, races and nationalities.
