Crista believes that a great piece of jewelry is so much more than just an accessory. She believes that jewelry has a deeper meaning and is transformative. It can take any outfit from boring to fabulous, it can make you exude confidence and sass, it can start the conversation that could change your life… “Jewelry is a means of self-expression. It is a reflection of the person you are today and a window into the person you will become tomorrow. There are so many things can limit the way you express yourself through fashion- whether it be a certain dress code at work, the proper attire for an event, or what you can wear based on your size or body shape. Jewelry is one of the few things that can always be an expression of YOU and reflect who you really are. It can make you feel strong, sexy, and confident. If your jewelry doesn’t do this for you, you are wearing the wrong jewelry.”

Behind the Scenes

Letter from the Editor

It’s hard to believe that 2014 is already here. I love the beginning of a brand new year! Even though January 1st is really no different than any other day of the year, there is just so much energy and excitement at the start of a new year and such a feeling of possibility. Can you feel it? I can’t wait for all the possibilities the new year will bring for Nearly Naked, for myself personally, and for each of you. Part of starting a new year is reflecting back on the past year- what went really well, and what didn’t. As I was reflecting, I realized that a different approach is in order for 2014, one with smaller more incremental goals and one filled with celebration! This

10 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

year will be all about transformation and celebrating the journey all throughout the year instead of focusing only on the destination. Inspiration for this issue: I start most mornings with a cup of espresso watching the sun rise out over my back yard. It is my tranquil moment of beauty before the rush of the day kicks in. It is always beautiful but one morning in particular this past month was absolutely breathtaking. The sky was on fire with gorgeous pinks, purples and oranges (the above snapshot from my phone doesn’t do it justice). The next morning I awoke to snow covered trees and a world wrapped

in white. Also beautiful, but a dramatically different sunrise. It made me think “what a difference a day can make.” This thought, as well as my reflections on 2013 and the year ahead, is what inspired the theme of this month’s issue- Transformation. Transformation: When we think of transformation we often think of big dramatic changes- things that take long periods of time and often lots of hard work. That type of thinking often keeps us stuck from moving forward because the effort to transform seems too huge and the pressure too great. “Do something today that your future self will thank you for.” ~Unknown

We often overlook the small steps we can do TODAY that will ultimately lead to transformation. One day really can make a big difference. Stack those days up over weeks and months and the transformation can be dramatic, but the effort doesn’t need to be. It just needs to be consistent and is more about taking committed action every day, no matter how small that action is. Challenge: “More is not better. Indeed, your greatest challenges will

to dream big and go for it with everything you’ve got, but instead of overwhelming yourself with big plans and big actions, think in terms of small and incremental actions you can take today that will move you closer to achieving your goals. If something starts to feel too big and overwhelming and you feel like giving up, commit to taking any action, no matter how small, that keeps you on track. The next day, take another action, then another. And remember to enjoy the journey and take moments to celebrate every little success along the way. It will keep you motivated and focused, and we could all use a little celebration every day. Whether you are trying to get fit, improve your health, pay off debts, find the love of your life, start or grow a business, or improve your selfimage, the same concept applies. I hope you enjoy this issue and find plenty of inspiration to help you achieve your goals in 2014. I wish you a very happy and transformational year. Happy New Year!

tech at the time. My husband saw how unfilled I was in my career and recommended I do something that combined my passion for writing and fashion. What did you envision when you first started your blog?

When my husband first introduced the idea of a blog, I had no idea what a blog even was. I’ve never been one to spend much time online or on social media, so I hadn’t noticed that there were people who photographed their daily outfits and shared them online.

People can create an amazing life for themselves doing the things that they are most passionate about, now more so than ever. You are the perfect example of this. When you first started your blog in 2011, did you ever imagine it turning into what it is today?

Not in a million years! I started the blog as a hobby and creative outlet outside my fulltime job in

18 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

What is it that you love so much about fashion?

My love of fashion started very early in life. I can still remember what I wore in Pre-School!

“For me, it’s a form of artistic expression. I’ve always been a shy person, so fashion was my way of communicating emotions.”

Why do you think personal style is important for a woman?

I think every woman has her own personal style, even if she thinks she doesn’t. Style is part of one’s identity. We all have to wear clothing, so how could getting dressed not be part of one’s individual identity? I think style is important because it can make or break your mood. If you’re wearing something you feel amazing in, your confidence will shine through for the world to see, and you might get that job you want, meet the person of your dreams, etc.

What tips can you give someone who is struggling to define her personal style, especially if she feels she can’t wear what she loves because of her body shape?

My motto has always been to figure out what you love, and make it work for you. If you feel as if you Inspirational Woman of the Month ♦ 19

can’t wear a short skirt because you aren’t a fan of your legs, try a longer length skirt in the same shape, and see if you feel great in it. There are ways to alter the trend you love and still make it work! The most important thing to remember is that personal style starts with the confidence to wear what you love, despite what others say or think. You are such an inspiration in the curvy community and also for women of all sizes to express themselves through fashion and feel good about their bodies. Tell us one of the most meaningful stories that someone has shared with you and how you’ve made a difference in their life through Girl With Curves.

Thank you so much. Connecting with women is my favorite part of what I do, and it’s extremely rewarding. I remember the very first email I received from someone who came across my blog a week after I had started putting pictures up. The writer was a girl around my same

“I will never forget that first email that made me realize I was on to something with my blog and my mission behind it.” age who said she struggled with her social life because she didn’t like to hang out with her thin friends, who made her feel unattractive and unstylish. In seeing my blog, she said she realized it wasn’t about her friends making her feel a certain way. It was her own lack of confidence that was keeping her from having a social life and having fun with fashion. She said she made a promise to herself to go out that weekend with her friends and wear something she felt good in, and she had the best time she had ever had. I will never forget that first email that made me realize I was on to something with my blog and my mission behind it.

Inspirational Woman of the Month ♦ 21

So many women struggle with body image, especially when they don’t look like what is portrayed in the media. Can you give any tips for having a healthy body image?

Developing a healthy body image takes time and effort, and the media’s narrow view of beauty doesn’t help those of us who are statistically “average” in terms of size. I think the easiest way to develop a healthy self-esteem and body confidence, is to focus on something you love about your body - whether it’s your legs, your hands, or the small of your back. Focusing on the one thing you like will eventually turn to love, and it will outshine any thoughts about the things you don’t like. What’s also important to remember, is that no one is perfect, and women of all shapes and sizeseven models and celebs, wish they could change at least one thing about themselves. Body issues isn’t just associated with one size group, it’s a female epidemic we’re all constantly working to improve.

22 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

What do you find to be the most challenging part of what you do and how do you deal with it?

I honestly haven’t come across any challenges in growing my blog, audience, or turning it into a fulltime career. I think the reason why is because I never approached being a blogger as a business venture. I started it as a hobby and I still think of it the same way today. “The moment you start to yourself to make a certain amount or meet certain goals in a period of time, is when stress and pressure could ruin the fun and behind what you’re doing.”

pressure

specific

passion

For me, I enjoy what I do because I’m helping women in a positive way, through my love of fashion. If you can hold on to what you’re passionate about, what comes with it doesn’t matter, because knowing you’re doing something you love is what’s most rewarding. The only challenge I personally have, is not having enough hours

in the day to create the content I want to create! My ideas are always flowing non-stop! You recently announced to your community that you are expecting your first child, congratulations! How do you think that will evolve what you have planned for Girl With Curves?

Thank you! For a while I wondered how becoming a mom and also personal style blogging while pregnant would affect my audience, etc., but then I reminded myself that my career should never hinder my personal life- they should work hand-in-hand. When I got my mind wrapped around that truth, I wasn’t worried about how becoming a mom would affect the blog. As far as this part of my life evolving the blog, I definitely think it has. I realize I have many readers who are also expecting, or are already moms, and it’s nice to be able to relate to a new group of women. I also think there’s a huge issue with maternity wear, so I’m having fun teaching my audience to wear normal clothes to work for them while expecting.

Inspirational Woman of the Month ♦ 23

If someone is considering pursuing their passion, whether it be starting their own fashion or curvy blog, or something else, what advice would you give them to take it from “just a dream” to how they live their life?

The best advice I can give is to do what you love and do it with passion, no matter what comes with it - either good or bad. When you’re doing something you love, the rest doesn’t matter, because you’re personally satisfied with what you’re doing. As for starting a blog, it’s important to have your own unique voice and be original. It seems like everyone has a blog these days, so ask yourself how can you set yourself apart from the crowd, while being your authentic self ?

LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

Own Your Beauty in 2014 & Beyond by Sue

Mathison, MD

There are so many ways that beauty manifests in our lives. The innocent smile of a baby,

the gentle hug of a parent, a painting that stirs the imagination, a song that says it all, a poem, a photograph that captures an incredible moment – anything that stretches our spirit to experience a new aspect of reality is beautiful. Love, kindness, loyalty, courage and integrity are beautiful. We all know of women, and men, who are not physically beautiful by media’s definition, but who come across as stunning and magnetically attractive. They seem to have an inner glow. What’s their secret? I think it’s all about creating 28 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

a personal definition of what beauty means to you that works from all aspects: physical, intellectual, spiritual and mental. For me, beauty is taking great care of myself. Beauty is walking into a room, standing as tall as my 5’4” frame allows, with great posture and a deep breath. Beauty is not caring so much about what others think of me, but caring about them and being curious about their lives. Beauty is taking time to look my best. Beauty is feeding my body with great healthy food and my mind with positive thoughts. Beauty is loving myself, despite the flaws. Beauty is celebrating life’s many pleasures.

I often turn to this quote for inspiration: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that

we are powerful beyond

measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am

I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? … Your

small does not serve the world.

playing

There is

nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you … as we

let our own light shine, we unconsciously

give other people permission to do the same.” ~ Marianne Williamson Pin it

In our culture, women get conflicting messages about beauty, truth and goodness. Is it all about looks? What about aging gracefully? Are we vain and superficial if we color our hair, wear makeup, adorn ourselves with beautiful jewelry or fix a flaw that bothers us? It seems

to me that truly beautiful people are those whose physical presence lives in harmony with their spiritual essence. We can take care of appearance and present our best selves so that it lifts us up and enhances our confidence. This is real beauty, not a superficial imposter. ♦ Own Your Beauty in 2014 & Beyond ♦ 29

Sexy.

What does that really mean? It means having confidence, loving yourself, being playful and having fun with life. Do you shy away from particular articles of clothing thinking they will make you look too sexy or even trampy? Your problem is your mindset and your false beliefs: “sexy is for the young gals,” “sexy is only for skinny girls,” “sexy is only for single girls looking to find their mate.” If you can relate to these beliefs it’s time to trash them and create a new perspective. I am sexy because I am confident, beautiful and know how to have fun. Once you do that mentally and emotionally, then it’s all about simply tweaking your wardrobe. The colors we wear say a lot about us, and they can also support us as we journey through various stages of life. Every color has certain properties associated with it. There are 3 colors associated with personal transformation—green, purple and pink. Green represents stability and endurance and it harmonizes and pacifies. Associated with renewal, prosperity and abundance, it also helps to bring about personal transformation, understanding and unconditional love.

LOVE YOUR BODY

Is Your Body Image In Need of a Makeover? By Health & Wellness Expert Wendy Darling

Sara has been busy building her business, but the pounds seem to be creeping up, and her energy is creeping down.

Janice, a recently divorced entrepreneur, has lost about 20 pounds. As she gets closer to feeling ready to date again, her weight begins to fluctuate, keeping her from reaching her goal. Beth is happily married and has a good career, but she is having

54 ♌ GoNearlyNaked.com

difficulty controlling her eating, and her weight keeps creeping up. What do all of these women have in common? They are all talented, bright, capable and sensitive. They have also all learned to direct their worries, fears and concerns about themselves and their lives toward their bodies. If 100 women were interviewed and asked how they liked their bodies, chances are that less than five would say that they were completely

satisfied with the way their bodies were today. What has happened to us that we have directed so much criticism, disappointment and even hatred towards such an essential part of who we are….our own bodies? One significant turning point may have occurred when women began advancing in the workforce. Our role models were male, and many women began taking on more stereotypical masculine qualities. Even though we learned many valuable lessons, there were also some significant costs. Women began to lose some very special qualities that are 100% female.

“Many of us keep trying to

squeeze

ourselves into a square peg (or a

size 6 pair of

jeans!) instead of

appreciating our

own unique body.” Couple this with the images constantly being bombarded by the media of what a beautiful woman is to look like, it’s clear why so many women seem to think there’s something wrong with them. Many of us keep trying to squeeze ourselves into a square peg (or a size 6 pair of jeans!) instead of appreciating our own unique body. So where do we go from here? There’s a high price to pay for not loving and accepting your body: your health suffers, your weight fluctuates. It affects your relationships. If can affect your level of physical and emotional intimacy.

Is Your Body Image in need of a Makeover? ♦ 55

You make yourself wrong for being who you are. You make certain foods wrong when you eat them. You get down on yourself when you don’t take better care of yourself and your body. In what ways is your body image holding you back? Where would you like to have greater influence and impact? What would it be like if this would no longer be an issue? I have met some of the most amazing women, who deep down, 56 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

are suffering from a poor sense of themselves, via their body image. And unfortunately, what we focus on grows, and this has led to being overweight. How about beginning to take some time out to love and appreciate your body? What is your body yearning for that you have overlooked? What can you begin to do to say to your body “I love you… just the way you are?” Your body is just like a helpless, newborn baby. You would

never consider stuffing that baby with food that isn’t good for it. You would never consider speaking in a way that is mean or cruel.

Here are some suggestions to get you started: 1. Have loving conversations with your body. Write a letter to your body, telling it how you feel about it. Then, write a letter from your body to yourself. You may be surprised at the response you get. 2. Write down the parts of your body that you love. In addition, write about the areas that you don’t love. Those are the places starved for love and acceptance. 3. Identify the foods that serve and support you. Then ask yourself,

“What keeps me from eating the foods that serve me the best?” 4. Find ways to support yourself. Structure time for exercise, drink lots of water, have quiet time, and pampering moments. Treat yourself like your best client or your best friend. (Because you are!) 5. Get a coach, exercise buddy or some kind of accountability partner to load you for success.

6. Expand your recipe options. Host a party with each person bringing a healthy dish (and recipe cards) and brainstorm ways to support each other. 7. Seek support to find ways of dealing with the areas of your life that are not working, to find ways to be able to change.

Remember, life is best when you find ways that best work for you. Take time each day to love and appreciate your body. This one act of love can make a significant difference in your health, even your wealth...and definitely your love life. Let 2014 be just the beginning of a healthier, more loving you… and your wonderful magnificent body. May your 2014 transformation begin. ♦

1 Stand straight a foot away from the front of a chair or bench. Feet slightly wider than hip width distance apart. 2 Place your index fingers on the crease of the front of your hips (one finger on each hip). 3 Hinge forward from your hips (sandwiching your fingers at your hips) with a straight back, abs pulled in. 4 Squat down, tap your sit bones on the front edge of the chair, knees in line with your toes. 58 ♌ GoNearlyNaked.com

5 Stand up, drive up through your heels, point your tailbone to the floor. 6 Perform 20 reps quickly, with good form.

Head Turner #2: Deep One-Legged Lunges 1 Stand with your feet together. 2 Step your right foot back, and land on the ball of your back foot. 3 Bend your front knee so it’s directly under your ankle – if not, move your back leg further. 4 Lean your upper body forward with a straight back (abdominals pulled in, chin tucked). 5 Place your fingertips on the floor (on either side of your knee) or hold on to a wall or chair. 6 Using the strength of your front leg, push back up to starting position.

Perform 10-12, then repeat on 7 the other leg.

Head Turner #3: Downward Dog Tuck & Lift

1 Start in a downward dog position: Hands on the floor shoulder width apart, elbows turn in, straight back. Feet hip width apart, sit bones point up to the ceiling, heels drop toward the floor. 2 Draw your right knee into your nose, round your spine, tuck your chin, hands directly over wrists. 3 Lean back into downward dog, extend your bent leg behind you, reach your toe toward the ceiling. 4 Drop your top leg back down into knee tuck. 5 Perform 10 reps, then repeat on other leg.

Head Turner #4: Plie Curtsey

1 Start with your feet wide, point your toes out slightly. 2 Tuck your tailbone slightly toward the floor, back is straight and shoulders level with your hips. 3 Dip down low, if your knees are past your toes, widen your stance. 4 Arms stretched out to your side, at shoulder level. 5 Step your right leg behind your left leg diagonally, land on the ball of your foot (hips facing front).

#4

6 Dip your back knee down as close to floor as you can. 7 Push off the front leg and the ball of your your back foot to come back to your plie. 8 Perform 10-12, then repeat on other leg. 9 Repeat the 4 exercises again, or slowly work up to 3 rounds. Note for Success:

If you usually take on too much at once, and then feel overwhelmed or disappointed in yourself for not following through, start doing just ONE of the suggested exercises per week. Then build up to 2 or 3, and eventually all 4 of these per week at 3 rounds each. When you honor your process, at your pace, you speed up your progress and guarantee success. ♌ Any body transformation starts with consistent healthy habits. If you want to take this even further, be sure to check out the complete HIIT exercise routine and healthy eating plan in the Dec. issue.

63 How to Find (Or Rekindle) Love in One Step By Barry Price

How to Find (Or Rekind le) Love in One Step by Barry Price

”Why can’t I find love?” She looked up at me imploringly, with blue eyes that had been hurt, but remained hopeful.

I was at a women’s event and, as it often happens, connected with a woman who had been struggling to find the partner she’d always dreamt of. “How are you treating the person you’re in love with now?” I asked. Confused, she looked at me. “But I am not with anyone.” I smiled, “How about yourself ? The love we get is directly proportionate to the love we give ourselves.” I watched her wheels turn as she

thought about that for a moment. Then it was like a little light bulb went off. She smiled and nodded. I gave her a few activities to help her start down the road to self love, understanding that this would invite love from a special man someday too.

Love, Romance, & Relationships ♦ 63

And this is true for all of us. Buddha himself said, “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire Universe, deserve your love and affection.”

That’s why today I am going to share the single best thing you can do to begin reconnecting to yourself and repairing the deeply loving relationship with ourself that we are born with as babies. When you watch children, they love smiling at themselves in the mirror. They are in love. They give love. They receive love. What a perfect state of being. So let me show you how to get yourself back to this state of love. The number one way to attract a man who loves you for who you really are

64 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

(or get your current partner to do so) is to learn to love yourself for who you really are. If you don’t love yourself, why would anyone else? But what does it mean to “love yourself”? It means accepting yourself as you are, including your imperfections, with no shame. It means feeling worthy and deserving of expressing your needs and expecting good things to come to you. It means trusting yourself and believing in yourself. So if you’ve recently caught yourself looking into a mirror and judging your body as not good enough, or thinking “Of course this would happen to me” when something bad happened to you in love, business or relationships, then it’s time for your booster shot of self-love. This will get you ready for the year ahead so you can feel confident and expressed when you’re around men at parties, over the holidays, or just at the grocery store, office or gym. So today I want to share my top tip for self-love. Do this daily for a week and you’ll notice yourself beginning to feel more confident

relationship

when you meet men (and people in general), you’ll feel less self-critical, less in-your-head, and you’ll start breathing easier as you feel more calm and content. Get out some paper and a pen. Make a numbered list of all the reasons you sometimes feel unlovable, undeserving of love, or like you aren’t meant to have love. This is how many beliefs are keeping love out of your life. Now make another list. This time, for each ‘reason’ you listed for being unlovable, write the direct counterpoint to it on your new list, explaining why you ARE lovable. So if item #1 on your ‘Unlovable List’ is, “I’m too old,” then item number one on your lovable list will read, “I’m the perfect

babies

age for love because ______” and complete the thought with the reason WHY. Once you finish this “Lovable List”, carry it around with you and read it often throughout the day. You can even read it to yourself, looking into your eyes in the mirror. The attention, love and acceptance you crave most is your own. See what happens after a week of doing this daily! So give yourself a week of romance and fall in love with the real you. It’s the best, most fulfilling love affair of your life. Commit to making it a lasting, loving relationship with yourself and very soon a great guy will notice how love-worthy you really are! ♦

GUILTY PLEASURE of the MONTH

Prosperity Pomegranate Champagne Ancient Egyptians considered pomegranate a symbol of prosperity and ambition. That sounds like a great start to a new year so why not add a twist to the typical glass of champagne and add some pomegranate?

INGREDIENTS: ♦ 1 oz. Pomegranate Juice ♦ 7 oz. Champagne ♦ 1-2 Tbsp Pomegranate Seeds

Directions: Pour the pomegranate juice into a champagne flute. Slowly add the champagne and top with pomegranate seeds. Choose a slightly sweet champagne to compliment the tangy pomegranate. It is typically the coldest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the warmest month of the year in the Southern Hempishere. Birthstone: Garnet Birth Flower: Carnation
