I

hope that by the time you read this letter it has rained and the temperature has dropped below 100 degrees. This year so far has been brutal on golf courses and golfers throughout Texas. The lack of water has stressed so many of our courses, and it’s been extremely difficult maintaining the excellent course conditioning we are accustomed to in Central Texas. So if you believe in the Golf gods, which I do, sending out a prayer for rain might make golfing life in South Texas a little more tolerable. Water problems? In some cases, not so much. Not all courses in Central Texas are in dire need of water; some are lucky to be receiving effluent water supplied by their city, and some just have great water rights. Our Front Cover Story, Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco Texas, is one of the lucky ones. Sure there are limits to watering, but having access is everything. Throughout the summer, Vaaler Creek has stayed greener than green through this drought, and the course has been in excellent condition all year long. I highly recommend you grab your sticks and head to Blanco to check it out for yourself. Vaaler Creek is located a straight shot from downtown San Antonio and less than an hour from the capital city of Austin. It is a visually stunning and uniquely memorable layout that sets out to challenge more accomplished players, while at the same time achieving playability for the average golfer. Foresight Golf has expanded its family this year by adding four new courses. The expansion includes Oso Beach Golf Course and Lozano Golf Center in Corpus Christi; Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle; and Max A. Mandel Golf Course in Laredo, one of the few course being built in the U.S. by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The centerfold in this issue features photos of the entire Foresight Family. With the year quickly coming to an end I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. See you in 2012.. Mike Ratchman Regional Publisher

Golf ’s Oasis in the Texas Hill Country

Sound water management and a wild stroke of luck is keeping Vaaler Creek green in bone-dry Central Texas. You would understand if PGA Professional Adam Grosch walked around with a perpetual smile on his face. He’s got a lot going his way these days. Grosch is Director of Golf at Vaaler Creek Golf Club, a five-star golf facility just down the road from San Antonio and less than an hour from the capital city of Austin. His golfers are happy, his staff is working together as a team, business is good. And his course, unlike many others in the state, remains in near-perfect condition, despite the worst drought in decades. But his joy is tempered by the reality that many courses are suffering, and that the golf industry, along with virtually anyone and everyone else, is having a pretty rough go of it. “Of course we’re thrilled that we can offer our guests a great golf experience, despite the State’s desperate need for rain,” Grosch said. “But it’s painful to watch what our friends at our neighboring courses are going through. Unfortunately, a parched course is something you just can’t hide.” Vaaler Creek remains green due to a 8

008-010 Vaaler Crk.indd 1

number of factors, not the least of which is that it draws a significant amount of its water supply from the Trinity Aquifer, which, unlike much of the surrounding area that draws water from rivers, lakes, and the Edwards Aquifer. That’s the “lucky” part of the equation. The Vaaler Creek staff is extremely judicious with the use of that water, and while you wouldn’t expect them to know exactly how much they’re using, you get the feeling that if queried they could nail it within a gallon or two. Vaaler Creek, architect Michael Lowry’s first signature golf course design, is a visually stunning and uniquely memorable layout that sets out to challenge more accomplished players by pinching landing areas and employing strategically placed hazards, while at the same time achieving playability and enhancing enjoyment for the average golfer. The back nine, which opened to the public in July 2007, was joined in 2009 by the complementary front. Both sides feature spectacular panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country,

Bend of the River

“Elevate” your game at the finest destination resort in this scenic corner of the State Anyone who’s driven across Texas can tell you two things about the ride: It’s far, and it’s flat. Indeed, you could start a rumor that the highest “natural” elevation in the State is the pitcher’s mound at a high school baseball field in Odessa, and most people would believe it. Most people, that is, who’ve never been to the Big Bend area in remote Southwest Texas, named for the vast curve in the Rio Grande River adjacent to the Mexican border. It is an extraordinarily beautiful region with a fascinating history, and the home of the renowned Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa. Enveloped by more than 1 mililion acres of public land, the Lajitas Resort is nestled between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and features the Black Jack’s Crossing Golf Course, a 7,413-yard Lanny Wadkins 2011 ISSUE 3

This semi-private, stunningly unique 18-hole championship golf course has challenging fairways set against a rugged backdrop. It’s a Big Course worthy of the Big Bend, with seven breathtaking mountain holes and one spectacular desert mountain vista after another. “Some of these tee shots, you just go, ‘Wow!’” said course designer Wadkins, former CBS golf commentator, PGA Tour Star and recent Hall of Fame inductee. “On hole number four, it’s ‘Holy smokes. smokes.’ Then fivve is better than four and sixx is bette better than five, and it ju ust keeps going.” just The course is name named after U.S. Army Gener General “Black Jack” Persh Pershing, who pursued Panch Pancho Villa across the

Rio Grande, and the old Lajitas Trading Post (circa 1800s) has been re-purposed into the Golf Shop and Longhorn Museum. The course is a true work of art, combining the historical features of the land with the stunning setting amidst the National and State parks. The facility features a 500-yard driving range with 25 practice stations a 5,000square foot-putting green, a short game practice facility, rental clubs, and a state-ofthe-art GPS equipped golf cart system. The Lajitas Resort offers a variety of guest rooms to accommodate your personal preference, which are beautifully and uniquely appointed to complement the historic character of their Big Bend setting. Each accommodation is individually designed -- no two rooms are alike -- and combine cozy chambers with Victorian sensibilities, hacienda hideaways with decidedly Spanish accents, and rough-hewn furnishings with a cowboy flair. Dining at the Lajitas Resort is as distinctive as the picturesque setting. The signature dishes created by the Executive Chef offer an innovative approach to traditional southwestern cuisine. More than just your grandfather’s course Sun City Texas Legacy Hills GC combines character and challenge. By Steve Habel Special to The Golfers Guide

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s been15 years since the debut of Legacy Hills Golf Club – the first track routed and opened for play in Georgetown’s Sun City age-restricted community. Built to challenge the neighborhood’s 55-andolder clientele, Legacy Hills GC has always been known for its combination of character and challenge; each of those aspects are evident in this course that strives, and exceeds, in being much more than a golfing version of a walk in the park. Plenty of folks – even those younger and stronger – enjoy the course and its multiple trials. Legacy Hills GC welcomed its first players in the autumn of 1996 and immediately gained the respect of the whole gamut of golfers in Central Texas. Fashioned by PGA Tour legend Billy Casper with help from renowned golf course architect Greg Nash, the course weaves its way through stands of cedars, live oaks, native pecans and red oaks and over rolling hills and across ravines. Berry Creek and its tributaries are prevalent throughout the course, making sure shots too wayward are punished. There are a number of elevation changes on the track, which plays to a par of 72 and at 7,088 yards from its back set of five tees. Several forced carries and occasional uneven lies boost Legacy Hills GC’s rating to 73.9 and slope to 131, a healthy and testing set of numbers for any golfer. Character abounds at Legacy Hills GC, which has its share of well-placed bunkers and water hazards and putting surfaces that are sectioned and undulating. Even the club’s members – many of whom play the course three or four times a week, will be challenged by the track’s options and versatility. The course’s raised green are surrounded by grassy swales, bunkers and collection pockets which make up and down recoveries a formidable task. “The layout at Legacy Hills is not trying fool anyone – what you see is what you get,” said Andy Miller, one of the course’s PGA professionals. “To have success you have to hit good shots, to hit 18

018-019.Sun City.indd 1

approach shots to the right part of the greens and to make putts.” Legacy Hills GC is really two kinds of courses in one – the front-side is tighter and has an interesting mix while the back-side is more open, longer (by 228 yards) and prone to be more affected by the area’s swirling winds. Players will love the options Legacy Hills GC offers, including a distinctive split fairway on the 387-yard par-4 second hole (playing to the left side makes the approach shorter); the demanding 211-yard par-3 eighth (with a small valley in front of the green to catch run-up shots) and the need for accuracy on the 357-yard par-4 ninth due to the proximity of stream on the left side on the fairway. On the back-side is defined by its tough twoshotters, beginning with the massive 472-yard 11th and continuing with the 437-yard 13th (which moves slightly to the right off the tee and uphill to the green), the 442-yard 14th (with Berry Creek beyond the tree line to the starboard side) and the 425-yard 15th, which sports a rock ridge that must be played across. The 520-yard par-5 18th is Legacy Hills GC’s signature hole and gives golfers with long and accurate play a chance to get home in two shots. Fairway bunkers loom ominously, and the long green is extremely prone to a three putt if the approach is not on the correct level. Legacy Hills GC sports its own nine-acre practice range, putting green, clubhouse, pro shop and lounge. The staff at Legacy Hills is able to excel at hosting. Legacy Hills Golf Club is a beautiful course, fitting in superbly with its natural surroundings. Tees and greens were incorporated into the existing Hill Country landscape and the flora and of vegetation on the track’s edges were selected to blend with the surroundings while creating color and visual excitement. A cascading stream alongside the ninth tee area is one of the course’s most aesthetically pleasing sections.

Delaware Springs GC’s new greens elevate already great experience By Steve Habel Special to The Golfers Guide

T

he golfing experience at Delaware Springs Golf Course has always been so good that players headed to the seat of Burnet County to challenge on of the state’s top municipal tracks. And here’s the good news – thanks to new turf on its putting surfaces and its collars, Delaware Springs GC is better than ever. Nestled into the rolling hills and oak trees along the Highland Lakes, Delaware Springs GC opened for play in 1992. The course plays 6,829 yards from the tips, but don’t be fooled by the track’s lack of length – there are more than enough challenges to keep even low-handicappers on their toes. That said, Delaware Springs GC, when played from the correct set of tees, is fun for all levels of golfers, which is a hallmark of any great golf course. Almost 20 years of constant play and the wear and tear of a score of Texas summers and winters had taken their toll on Delaware Springs GC’s greens. So the course this spring converted its putting surfaces to Champion Bermuda, which took about 10 weeks to complete. Champion Bermuda requires higher maintenance than other strains of Bermuda, but yields more normal irrigation, especially in summer heat. “We couldn’t be happier with the way greens have turned out,” said Doug Fipps, Delaware Springs GC’s director of golf. “The changes have taken away some of the graininess of the greens, so our regular golfers are working to learn the greens’ breaks all over again.” The layout at Delaware Springs – designed by architects Dave Axland and Dan Proctor, protégés of Ben Crenshaw and

30

030 Delaware Springs Edit.indd 1

Bill Coore – fits the rolling terrain seamlessly. There is not a lot of mounding and, because the budget for the course was limited and the site was interposed with rock, there was not much digging when Delaware Springs GC was fashioned. Eight of the track’s holes have no bunkers, but where bunkers are utilized, they are used to great effect, both artistically and strategically. Axland and Proctor also used the site’s trees to their advantage and on several of the course’s holes strategically placed trees become the focal point for the player. During a round, players will encounter numerous chances to bump and run shots to the putting surfaces and even a few par-4s (namely the ninth and the 17th – both of which are carded at 310 yards) that can be offer risk/reward options. The meat of the challenge at Delaware Springs is its long two-shotters, as the course has four par-4s that play at 425 yards or more. Delaware Springs GC’s toughest stretch is its third, fourth and fifth holes – par-4s of 425 and 477 yards, respectively, and a tougher-than-it-seems par-3. Golfers that get through this stretch at par or better can take a lot of momentum into the sixth, a reachable-in-two 490-yard par-5. Named after the springs that snake through the layout, Burnet’s municipal course is a scenic links-style tract that is one of the better values in Texas golf. The low prices and friendly service, combined with a picturesque and challenging golf course, make Delaware Springs GC a Hill Country favorite and well worth the drive.

ated four out of five stars in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” list, Delaware Springs Golf Course is a Hill Country classic cradled by a variety of native trees and accented by charming scenery. The beautiful 6,891-yard par-72 track unfolds onto gently rolling hills and offers golfers scenic vistas at every turn, making it as picturesque as it is challenging. The aesthetic value is just one reason why Delaware Springs has become a Hill Country favorite. Visitors are often impressed by the attitude of the golf course staff, a friendly and courteous crew that makes strangers feel right at home. In addition to the 18-hole championship course, the facility features a well-stocked pro shop, driving range, putting green, snack bar and dining room overlooking the 18th green. Precision in the pecans Dual personalities make San Saba River Golf Course a Hill Country treasure. By Steve Habel Special to The Golfers Guide

T

here is nothing subtle about the round of golf presented at the San Saba River Golf Course, a track that has two distinct personalities and challenges aplenty despite a relatively flat site and not one sand bunker in its meandering layout. The 18-hole course is actually a combination of two nine-hole tracks. The original nine holes at San Saba River GC was fashioned in 1972 by a group of local businessmen who liked to play golf and didn’t want to drive west to Brady or southeast to Lampasas to tee it up. They found a pecan orchard just east of town on the San Saba River and went to work, cutting a path through the trees next to the river. Once room was cleared for the course, the men would head to the course in their spare time to keep it up and to play a little when they could. San Saba River GC became an area institution, so much so that folks would travel from just about anywhere to get a chance to test their games and their precision in the pecans. By 1986, the course needed to expand so the city brought in golf course architect Sorrell Smith to design and build another nine holes. The new nine was routed in a plain south of the original course, and several irrigation ponds were dug and filled with water from the river and from the town’s effluent to keep the course green and growing. With its pecan trees grown tall and wide and the new nine fully matured, San Saba River GC is not a course for the weak of heart or for the unaccomplished player, especially if it is attacked from the back set of four tee boxes. From the tips, the track sports four par-4s of 400 yards or more (three of those – including the massive 448-yard eighth – are on the newer, front-nine), two 580-yard par-5s and the colossal 625-yard ninth, one of the longest three-shot holes in the Lone Star State. While the course’s longer holes are on the front-side (which plays at 3,628 yards), the 32

032.SanSaba Edit.indd 1

final nine offerings at San Saba River GC are the holes that draw top players to the course. Most of the track’s more than 2,700 mature pecan trees are on the back-nine (which was the original course) and if the player struggles with his control he or she will have a tough row to hoe. Golfers relish courses that ask the player to use their heads and execute rather than bomb and gouge and San Saba River GC is a thinking-man’s challenge. Yes there are times when the long ball can be the player’s friend – such as on the aforementioned lengthy par-5s – but there are easily as many opportunities to rein in your game and play to position. “The real challenge here begins at the turn,” said PGA professional Keith Harris, the course’s director of golf. “Over the years, the pecan trees have grown so much that they overhang some of the fairways and make the course much narrower and less forgiving. The player needs to be able to move his ball in both directions to be successful here.” Owned and operated by the city of San Saba, the San Saba River Golf Course has been voted a “Best Place to Play” by Golf Digest magazine. The track is renowned for its challenging routing and its quiet, scenic beauty. The course is located just east of Highway 190 in the land where the Texas Hill Country is at its northernmost point. Facilities located on the course grounds include the club’s pro shop, driving range, short-game practice area and putting green. Golf packages, which include course play and lodging reservations, are also available. Adjacent to the course is the San Saba River RV Park and Clubhouse Facility, where each campsite offers full-service hook-ups, a grill area and a fire ring. The clubhouse features a kitchen, a dining area, a great room with satellite television, bathrooms, showers and a laundry facility.

alado Del Rio was lengthened to more than 6,500 yards, and thanks to additional mounding, renovated bunkering and an improved drainage system, it will be far more enjoyable to play more days of the year. Salado Del Rio might be the more scenic of the two courses with its tree-lined fairways, additional mounding around the greens and forced carries over hazards, some you can play out of, some you can’t. The stretch of holes from the fourth through the eighth is particularly breathtaking as they play along and across Salado Creek, offering more pronounced doglegs and the most dramatic elevation changes on either course

A Legend in Its Own Time Open to the public, La Loma Grande offers a classic design by one of the game’s greatest course architects.

G

olfers in the San Antonio area have recognized for decades that the La Loma Grande Golf Course at Fort Sam Houston is among the best designed tracks in the State, but few know why a course located on an Army base has such a reputation and pedigree. It so happens that the course was originally developed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast, and built by the soldiers themselves in the early 1900’s. If the name Tillinghast rings a bell but you can’t quite place it, here are a few of his other 265 course designs: Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, Baltusrol, all of which have hosted numerous U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, and Ryder Cups. It is the only military golf course to host a PGA TOUR event: two Texas Opens that were won by Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer and Gene Littler. Now it has been returned to the dream of Tillinghast’s original design. La Loma Grande shares Fort Sam with the Salado Del Rio Course and is the “flatter” of the two layouts, but most recreational players also consider 6,819-yard, par 71 track the more difficult course with its pushedup greens and its diabolical bunkering and mounding around the greens. The fairways are tree-lined but not as tight as on Salado Del Rio, lending a slightly more forgiving quality to La Loma. The greens are medium in both size and speed, and the strategic bunkering adds an additional level of challenge. All of the greens and bunkers have been renovated by the Kevin Tucker Group in 2008 and the tee boxes leveled and squared up, and the 16th green has been moved back into the trees, adding 20 yards to an already exciting par-3 that’s right in the middle of a great set of finishing holes. Rounding out the facility is a practice 2011 ISSUE 3

chipping green, lighted driving range, private cart storage, rental clubs and 175 rental carts. Located within the Club-house is a Golf Shop featuring top of the line equipment and men’s and women’s apparel. “We offer a complete golf experience, and between the two courses host more than 80,000 rounds per year,” said Director of Golf Joseph Mendez, and judging by the continuing and overwhelming popularity of the venue, Mendez knows what he’s talking about. La Loma offers private lessons, a Junior Golfers program during the warmer months, and approximately 14 golf tournaments per year. The shared Clubhouse features Mulligan’s Snack Bar, open daily from 6:15 am.- 6 p.m., and is the perfect setting for catered receptions, anniversary and retirement parties, luncheons and special events of all kinds with seating for 300. Mulligan’s also features a weekend breakfast buffet, a short order grill every day and daily lunch specials. Fort Sam Houston was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1975, and careful preservation of the base and its traditions of excellence established when the first soldier arrived here in 1845 have carried over to its golf facilities. And while it’s not often that golfers of every stripe get to play on a Tillinghast design, as most have now been relegated to Private Club status, residents of or visitors to the San Antonio area can take a step back in time and enjoy the game as it was originally meant to be played. Play La Loma today, and start writing a little golf history of your own. Grip it and Sip it... then Rip it Greens and Grapes Tournament last big event at Lady Bird before major renovation The upcoming Greens and G Grapes Holiday Tournament at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Club, three miles south of Fredericksburg on State Highway 16, will be the last major event held at the course prior to the start of its total restoration beginning January 2012. The refurbishment, Phase 1 of a 20-year Master Plan to revitalize the course is expected to last into early fall and will include replacement of all greens, placing new turf on the fairways, repairing cart paths and the cart staging area, improving the irrigation system to support the new turf, and making routing changes to comply with industry safety standards. The plan was submitted to (and approved by) the Fredericksburg City Council in July by PGA Professional and Lady Bird Director of Golf Alan Wooley, and is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $2 million. “Tourism is the biggest revenue generator in our county,” said Wooley, “and our golf course is not only a jewel but a valuable asset that significantly improves and supports the tourism effort. Investing in Lady Bird Golf Course is an investment in the future of our community. Of course, our resident golfers and regular guests are thrilled to have The Lady returned to its original luster.” Oak tree-lined fairways and the Live Oak Creek meandering through this beautiful Hill Country layout make Lady Bird a Central Texas favorite. Four of the holes on the front nine of this 6,432-yard championship layout cross over the meandering Live Oak Creek, while the back nine features three lakes that come into direct play on five holes. The 10,000-squarefoot clubhouse features the Red Bird Grille, the Cardinal Room for meetings and events, a fully stocked golf shop and improved parking areas. 36

036 Lady Bird Edit.indd 1

Practice facilities feature 20 hitting stations, as well as two practice greens and a practice bunker. The Greens and Grapes Holiday Tournament, benefiting Junior Golf, will be held December 3 and 4, and will feature a Shotgunstart 18-hole event beginning at 9:30 on Saturday the 3rd, with a Taste of Fredericksbug on-course during play, followed at 2 p.m. with wine tours and tastings with the three wine company partners in the program, Becker Vineyards, Grape Creek Vineyards and Pedernales Cellars. The wine tours will be especially interesting, as participants will have access to areas normally off limits to regular visitors. Come out and support Junior Golf in Texas, and get one last look at the gracefully aging Lady Bird before her extreme makeover. The Tradition, a Keith Foster designed course, was rated the #1 daily fee course in the Houston area by the Houston Chronicle for four consecutive years and has hosted the 1st Stage of the PGA Qualifying Tournament. The Cypress course earned Golf Digest’s ranking of the “Best New Course” in 1989. Both courses offer a challenging and exciting golfing experience, with dramatic topography and are nestled within the native forest of North Houston and just 7 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport.

If ever there was a sentimental favorite, Pecan Valley Golf Club is it! A Foresight Golf acquisition in 2008, Pecan has been restored to its glory days through thoughtful and well – planned turf management. Massive oak and pecan trees line the fairways and flirt with the greens. The course is one of the ‘old masters’ where 40

037-044.Foresight Golf.indd 40

layout is concerned. A new set of forward tees that play to 4200 yards make the course more enjoyable for the ‘new masters’ to conquer. Just south of downtown, Pecan Valley is convenient and easy to get to. Pecan Valley Golf Club – a storied past restored with a promising future.

In February, Foresight Golf officially began managing the municipal courses in Corpus Christi – Oso Beach Golf Course and the Lozano Golf Center. For years, both courses have been the mainstay of public golf in Corpus and continue to be incredibly popular and highly revered by the local golfers and the Winter Texans that make their way south every year. It has taken only a few short months for golfers to see some of the changes they were hoping for in terms of course conditions and employee performance. As early as April, golf coaches from as far away as La Vernia were noticing improvements on the courses and the professional operations as their teams competed in a tournament at both courses.

With the rich and storied histories of both Oso and Lozano, Foresight strives to return the courses to the terrific conditions they sported when people like Hogan, Snead, Nelson and Zaharias walked their fairways. This restoration includes plans to renovate the Lozano Executive Course and practice area into an even better facility to learn, practice and grow in the game.

Max A. Mandel

MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE Breathtakingly overlooking the Rio Grande River just north of Laredo, Texas, the new Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course is scheduled to open in early 2012. This project is the vision and collaboration of the City of Laredo and the wellknown and highly respected Max A. Mandel family. Significant planning has taken place over the last several years with the ultimate goal being to bring the community of Laredo and South Texas an exceptional golf venue that its residents can enjoy and play often, as a result of its remarkable value and affordable fees. Seeing what Foresight Golf has done throughout Texas in accomplishing this goal, the City of Laredo’s first step was to select Foresight Golf to be the lease operator and the development consultant to represent the City in the design and construction of the golf course. There was incredible interest on behalf of the golf industry in this project and after an intense and competitive selection process; Robert Trent Jones, II and Landscapes Unlimited, Inc. were selected to be the design build team. The golf course is strategically situated on 270 acres of atypical South Texas Mesquite land. The site has almost a mile of Rio Grande River frontage with the clubhouse and Holes 8, 9, 15 and 16 playing directly alongside and overlooking the river. It is a par 72 golf course that has an excellent balance of drama, playability, risk and reward that will make for exciting and enjoyable golf for all levels of player. Says Ed Miller, Foresight Golf’s Chief Operating Officer and the consultant for the golf course construction; “I honestly cannot believe how good this golf course is turning out! The synergy that has developed between the team building this golf course, working on this site that is naturally made for golf, is resulting in a golf course that is going to become known as one of the best in the State.” For more information and photography of this project in process, please go to:

Plum Creek Golf Course – just south of Austin - is situated on more than 200 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country terrain and features 18 holes of championship golf that take advantage of the acreage. Not the usual back-andforth layout, Plum Creek was designed where no two fairways touch – a feature that exudes the wonderful peace some golf courses lack. Entrusted to Foresight Golf’s management in early 2011, golfers at Plum Creek will soon see the transformation and regeneration of this once vital and fun course. Plum Creek is located just off I-35 in Kyle – a little country drive for those in and around Austin. For tee times, call the pro shop at 512-2625555, or book online at www.plumcreekgolf.com.

The Republic Golf Club took San Antonio by a storm. Built along historic Salado Creek among its scenic oak, elm and mesquite trees, The Republic was voted its favorite course in 2006, 2007 & 2009. Only 10 minutes from downtown San Antonio’s world famous Riverwalk, The Republic has been described by one 2011 ISSUE 3

037-044.Foresight Golf.indd 43

USGA official as being one of the best designed facilities in Texas. Its wide fairways and open greens contribute to the course’s character, but it is the layout that simply defines this course as solid golf. The course is challenging to the experienced golfer while allowing the beginner to enjoy it as well.

estled in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, Lago Vista Golf Course combines breathtaking scenery with incredible golf. Here golfers enjoy some of the most spectacular lake views and wildlife sightings that a Texas golf course has to offer. Built in 1971, Lago Vista Golf Course is the older and widely considered to be the easier of the two golf courses in Lago Vista, although the back nine provides a challenge for all skill levels with its tight fairways and many elevation changes. Whether your golfing adventures lead you north or south of Houston, Gantz Management offers you an outstanding experience with the best value for your buck. History touches present time at fabled Texas National Golf Club,“Golf’s Forgotten Getaway.” Once home to the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, Texas National winds through rolling hills, tall pines and robust elevation changes in Willis. Scenic and secluded, Texas National features nearly a dozen water hazards, including calm streams and small lakes. This Texas treasure is quickly being restored to its former glory by Gantz Management Group, and will be primed and ready for the 2011 golf season. Gantz Management is now offering special rates at www.texasnationalgolfcourse.com. Golfers can also call the pro shop at (936) 856-4233 to make tee times. South of Houston you’ll marvel at the playability and well-manicured nature of Country Place Golf Club. This semi-private course nestled in Pearland just off 288 offers a relaxed setting at inexpensive rates. Recent improvements have the course in prime shape, as aesthetics and on-course quality were equally enhanced. Take a nonchalant stroll through the back nine as it winds along Clear Creek toward a spacious patio where you can pour yourself a cold one once the day is through. Gantz Management staff will work to insure you and your guests enjoy their experience. Both facilities offer tournament packages with amenities to accommodate groups of 20 to 200 with the utmost service. If you’re interested in a custom golf package for an outing or event, contact events.gmg@gmail.com. Why pay more? It doesn’t have to be expensive to enjoy good golf and great service!

Now New Alternate Tees Houston’s No. 1 rated golf club just happens to be one of the best golf values in all of Texas Some golf course accolades and awards carry more weight than others. Sure, it’s nice to be recognized for, say, the “Best Hot Dog at the Turn,” or some such compliment, but it obviously pales in comparison to “Number 1 Rated Golf Club in the Houston Area,” and “Best Course in Houston Under $30,” both of which have recently been attributed to The Battleground Golf Club at Deer Park, a complete public golfing facility located just 20 minutes from downtown Houston offering impeccable course conditions, phenomenal customer service and an overall golf experience second to none. Houston-area golfers have long known that Battleground is a true championship test, as evidenced by its signature hole, the 175-yard, par-3 17th. A stair-step waterfall accents the edge of a lake that fronts the green. The putting surface is slightly elevated though not very deep, making club selection a top priority. Adding to the challenge is that this is a double green, shared with the par-5 tenth hole, which makes the landing area look larger from the tee than it actually is. While attacking the pin is always an option, care must be exercised to avoid disaster. If there’s a second signature hole on this highly rated track it would have to be the par-5 60

060-061 Battleground.indd 1

fifth, perhaps the most interesting and visually stunning hole on the course. This dogleg-left par-5 features a fairway bordered by water on the right, and the smart play is to land your drive just short of an inlet of water crossing the fairway at the dogleg. Big hitters run the risk of driving into it, so 3-wood or 2-iron is a pretty good choice on the tee here. The green can be reached in two, but that requires an all carry approach from about 245 yards to reach a relatively small green surrounded by water on three sides and sand on the other. This is definitely not a shot in most golfers’ bags. Conventional wisdom has players bailing right on the second shot and approaching the green on the landlocked right side. Gentle undulations on the green must be observed and accommodated, and the waterfall left of the putting surface adds character to this exceptionally scenic portion of the course. Besides being the “place to play” for you or your foursome, The Battleground Golf Course is also the perfect place to host your next golf tournament or corporate golf outing. Tournament packages include green fee, cart, range balls, yardage book for each player, professional services for the score board, use of the banquet room if necessary, scorecards, and cart signs.

All New at The Republic Grill

N

o less a luminary than Napoleon once opined that, “An army runs on its stomach,” and while the connotation was obviously military, the same thing can be said by and for any casual golf foursome. Indeed, the pre-round buffet, lunch at the turn, and a post-round cold one while you engage your fingers and toes trying to figure out your actual score are now as much a part of the golf experience as hitting a bag of balls on the driving range or waving at a few putts on the practice green. And while virtually every golf club and course features some sort of food and beverage option, only a select few offer a top-flight facility like The Republic Grill at The Battleground at Deer Park. Featuring a new menu, new hours, new themed lunch specials, a new breakfast golf package and a Sunday Brunch Buffet, The Republic Grill offers casual dining with a magnificent golf course view. The Republic Grill’s new hours are Monday - Thursday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m.- 11 a.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Enjoy an incredible Brunch Buffet every Sunday, featuring more buffet items than you can shake a 9-iron at, as well as delectable desserts, for only $13.95 per person. The full menu is offered Monday to Friday, along with specialty items on the daily lunch buffet -- including the over-stocked salad bar -- from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It too is just $9.95. Happy Hour is from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. with appetizer and drink specials. The new Weekend Golf Breakfast Buffet Packages includes breakfast, greens fee, and shared cart, all for $33 on Fridays and $42 62

on Saturdays. This is the best breakfast and golf in the State. Widely recognized within the Deer Park golfing community as one of the finest restaurants in the area, The Republic Grill is on a mission to inform locals and visitors alike that the facility is open to the public. “Many people have heard about us from their friends and fellow golfers, but not so many are aware that they are always welcome to join us, whether they’re golfing with us that day or not,” said Food & Beverage Coordinator Jeremy Elbert. “We want to change that perception, and we’ve adjusted our menu items and our hours to make it even more convenient for them to do just that.” The Republic Grill also features a large private room that accommodates up to 200 guests for weddings, meetings, golf outings -- any special event that’s on your schedule, including those all-important Holiday parties. With a menu customized specifically for your event, your guests will enjoy the atmosphere of a country club, while you enjoy the prices of a public facility. If your foursome truly does run on its stomach, once you treat yourself to this culinary extravaganza you’ll be fueled up and ready for anything The Battleground can throw at you. But you’d better leave a little extra time for your outing, because with this much great fuel, you’ll be wanting to play the course twice. Napoleon would be very proud. vid golfers in the Houston area yearning for a pure golf experience set apart from the city and brimming with secluded, natural surroundings can find that true, undisturbed feeling at Eagle Pointe Golf Club. The par-71 Rick Forester-design located less than 35 minutes from downtown Houston off I-10 in Mont Belvieu, is equal parts peaceful, eye-catching and playable. The course’s distinguishable characteristics are its rolling fairways, stunning-

ly tall pines, dramatic elevation changes and an abundance of water. With no homes on 17 of the 18 holes, golf is what you get at Eagle Pointe. The trademark of Eagle Pointe is its steeply tilted, undulating greens that will challenge even the most expert players. Strategically speaking, it’s important to place your approach shots below the hole at Eagle Pointe because of the quickness of the putting surfaces. Eagle Pointe’s closing stretch is the perfect way to conclude a round of golf.

Timber Creek Golf Club

Beneath the towering Oaks and sturdy Pines that permeate Timber Creek Golf Club, golfers are enjoying the game like never before. General Manager Mike Griswold and his staff are stressing the fun aspects of golf, and developing an uncommon rapport with their customers. “People who play here frequently call this their club and have a sense of belonging,” Griswold chimed. “They don’t pay dues to get that.” The course’s culture is equaled if not surpassed by the design of Jay Riviere, who incorporated dense woodlands, winding creeks and rock outcroppings to create a splendid layout just 20 miles from downtown Houston. 68

068-069 Timber Creek.indd 1

“Our course isn’t target golf, but the fairways are really defined,” Griswold said. “Jay Riviere’s genius is that you know where you want to hit it and where you don’t want to hit it off every tee box. There’s no guessing.” With its classic Clubhouse Pub atmosphere and an eclectic menu that appeals to virtually every taste, the Legends Grill at Timber Creek is the place to meet, mingle and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres during the regular Friday afternoon Happy Hour, weekly from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Open daily from 11 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset, Legends Grill welcomes golfers and non-golfers alike to enjoy their daily Lunch Specials every day until 4 p.m., and their favorite libations anytime.

Learn! Play! Compete! STPGA Junior Golf program extols the virtues of working hard, having fun, and experiencing the thrill of being in contention “Golf doesn’t build character, it reveals it,” is an adage that has been attributed most often to the immortal Bobby Jones, but even the inestimable Mr. Jones could never have foreseen the character-building capabilities of the game on today’s youth, not only across the country but around the world. Golf provides kids of all ages, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds with structure and discipline; it promotes confidence and enhances self-esteem; it provides valuable life lessons on interacting with their peers; and it teaches children that without some risk there is never any real reward. That it does all this while allowing them to have fun is the true beauty of this extraordinarily beautiful game. But a sometimes overlooked yet equally valuable component is competition, and no one is more keenly aware of that than PGA Professional Thomas Hutton, Junior Golf Manager and Championship Director for the Southern Texas PGA. “Golf is a great teacher,” says Hutton, “and a great equalizer. Especially during competitive events, junior golfers get to experience first-hand the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat -- to borrow a well-worn sports phrase -- and learn that taking personal responsibility in dealing with and overcoming adversity on the course helps prepare them for the challenges they’ll face later on in their everyday lives.” Widely recognized as one of the most extensive and successful junior programs in the U.S., the Southern Texas PGA sponsors and hosts a full docket of Junior Golf events each season, culminating with the annual Southern Texas PGA Junior Championship. “Traditionally we’ve offered a two-season program, 72

072.STPGA Edit.indd 1

Summer and School Year,” says Hutton, “but beginning in 2012 we’re going to go to three seasons – Spring, Summer, and Fall – and each season will have its own Championship.” The expanded schedule is in response to the overwhelming and enthusiastic participation over the past few years. Indeed, 270 juniors of every age and ability level competed in the 2011 Junior Championship at Cypresswood Golf Club in August, with more than 2,800 juniors participating in the total series of events this year. It’s an opportunity for young golfers to experience the thrill of championship play in a tournament atmosphere, and it rewards players who devote the time and energy to improve their games. While many of the Fall Series events are already full, there are still opportunities to get in on the excitement and fun. Each tournament has automatic exemptions into the upcoming Fall Series Championships, to be played December 3-4 at Pine Forest Country Club for the Junior Tour, and December 10-11 at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club for the Little Linksters. Whether it’s to acquaint your child with the game for the very first time, or introduce him or her to the thrill of truly competitive golf, the STPGA’s Junior Golf program and its Championship Series of events will create golfing memories that will last a lifetime. For more information contact the Southern Texas PGA office at (832) 442-2404, or visit their website, www.stpgajuniorgolf.com.

Golf Academy at Timber Creek

Class A PGA P Cl Professional f i lD David id Pil Pilsner realizes he is one of golf’s fortunate few. “I was lucky to have grown up playing with good junior players who motivated me to practice and get better,” said Pilsner. “Instruction was not very common, but we learned to play the game well.” Now, as Director of Golf Instruction at Timber Creek Golf Club in Friendswood, the practically self-taught Pilsner is bringing the basics of the game to golf’s fastest-growing segment, junior golfers. “We host golf camps in the summer to introduce children as young as six years old to the game,” said Pilsner, “and during the school year we have after school classes, Saturday classes, and a Junior Golf Academy for teenagers.” This fall Pilsner will conduct a Golf Fundamentals class for boys and girls ages 5 to 9. Beginning Monday, October 3, the six-week program from 4:45 to 6 p.m. will focus on fundamental movement skills that are used in all sports. The 90-minute sessions will use stations to help the kids work on agility, striking, balance, locomotion, jumping, rotation and core strength. Additionally, the Junior Golf Academy will feature the Learn to Play Golf program for boys and girls from 10-13 years old, which will introduce these young players to more golf-specific skills including upper and lower body mobility and stability, wrist motion, striking, agility, balance and coordination, as well as focusing on routine golf skills -- if there truly are such things -- like putting, chipping and the full swing. The cost for each program is $120. Timber Creek Golf Club, a 27-hole facility designed by Jay Riviere and carved out 2011 ISSUE 3

k and d pine i fforests, offers ff off 316 acres off oak golfers an environment and a feeling that is not found anywhere else on the South side of Houston. One million cubic yards of dirt were moved to create the rolling looks of South Carolina, and 13 bridges were added to cross over Clear Creek. Strategically placed rock outcroppings add to the beauty of the course. The 6,500-square-foot clubhouse features a well supplied golf shop, a restaurant/ bar that is open daily and locker rooms with showers, and the 200-seat open-air pavilion is equipped with a grill and is perfect for tournaments, private parties or for just providing a panoramic view for post-round beverages. The driving range, where you can sharpen your skills or take a lesson from the staff of PGA professionals, is lighted for after-work practice sessions, and customer service ranks high among all Houston-area golf clubs. The Golf Academy at Timber Creek also offers custom club fitting to help you play your best -- Pilsner is certified as a Ping and Titleist club fitter. Whether you’re a beginner, a recreational player or a highly skilled golfer looking to sharpen your skills, Timber Creek has a program designed to fit your needs. “Golf is a difficult game to begin with,’ said Pilsner, “but that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be fun.” And anyone who’s been named Southern Texas PGA Professional of the Year, as Pilsner was in 2008, certainly knows what he’s talking about. For more information on the Golf Academy at Timber Creek log on to www.timbercreekgolfclub.com, or call David Pilsner directly at (281) 993-1140, ext. 22.

Moved to a New Location

T

he Golf Club, Austin’s most trusted source for golf equipment, has moved to a new location at 1315 W. Ben White Blvd. They have an expanded inventory of the hottest new clubs and the most affordable and best selection of used equipment. Although, they have maintained the same attention to detail, customer loyalty and fair pricing that has sustained it for many years. Local Austin store owner John Rowsey recently purchased a larger building conveniently located between Manchaca and South 1st on the Southside of Ben White Blvd (or Hwy 290). “With our move, we went from 2,300 to close to 4,000 square feet” Rowsey said of the new store. Rowsey and his staff have enhanced and increased their fitting programs and commitment to placing clients into equipment that fits their swing and their size. “We already have the best service and now we have one of the largest inventories in the area.” At the core of their customer service is the top-notch free custom fitting that comes with every iron set purchase at The Golf Club. Whether it’s the hottest new putter, driver or iron set on the market, the staff at The Golf Club ensures the equipment is the perfect match for the player. The Golf Club’s pricing is generally less expensive than the “larger” retailers in the country. “We have smaller overhead and lower costs and we are able to pass those savings along to our customers,” Rowsey said. “On new iron sets, we are generally $50 cheaper than the larger stores. Drivers, Fairway Woods, Hybrids and Putters are 10%-15% less than the competition ” Add to that value and service an easy-to-access location in South Austin and one can see why the new location of The Golf Club is getting so much attention.
