Muirfield is widely regarded as one of the greatest tests of links golf in the world. Jack Nicklaus, the 1966 Open Champion at Muirfield, once famously said of the course: “What you see is what you get.” While Muirfield is every bit as challenging and intimidating as the other venues on The Open rota, it is perhaps the fairest challenge of them all with no hidden hazards or surprises. The front nine runs clockwise around the inner loop of the homeward nine which runs broadly in the opposite direction forcing players to face winds from all directions. Muirfield is undoubtedly a shot-maker’s course. Over the years some of the greatest players in the game have lifted the Claret Jug at Muirfield including Harry
Vardon, James Braid, Walter Hagen, Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Sir Nick Faldo and, of course, Ernie Els. The last time the Championship was played at Muirfield in 2002 Els won in dramatic fashion after a play-off against Australians Stuart Appleby and Steve Elkington and Frenchman Thomas Levet. Els edged out Levet with a par four in the sudden death play-off on the 18th hole after they finished tied ahead of Appleby and Elkington in the four-hole play-off. With Els having notched up his second victory in The Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes last year, he will be very much
looking forward to returning to Muirfield as the defending Open Champion in both senses. Among those expected to challenge him will be world number one Rory McIlroy, three-time Open Champion Tiger Woods and victorious European Ryder Cup stars Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Paul Lawrie. The likes of Bubba Watson, Brandt Snedeker and Phil Mickelson will lead the American challenge. Australian Adam Scott, who came so close in 2012, and 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen could also be contenders.
