Candy Around the World Candy is at the center of many tradtions around the world- Let’s explore!
Brigadeiros
Brazil’s national truffle was created in the 1940s and is served at birthdays and parties. A mix of butter, cocoa powder, and condensed milk is heated for the candy’s sticky, smooth texture — and then rolled and sprinkled with more candy.
Gergeian
Gergean is a Khaleejy Halloween takes place on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of Ramadan. This tradition sees children going from door to door dressed festively singing traditional Gergean songs in hopes of getting candy (normally Al Seedawi candy) and even the odd loose change.
Piñatas
Traditionally in Mexico, especially at Christmas, piñatas are filled with fruit and candies such as guavas, oranges, pieces of sugar cane, and wrapped candies. Some piñatas are “traps” filled with flour, confetti or water. Special baskets of treats may be given to children who come up empty handed after a piñata is broken. These are called colaciónes and are given to prevent hurt feelings.
Schultüte
The tradition of the “Schultüte” leads back to approximately 1810, when children in Germany and Austria are given a big cardboard cone, prettily decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies, school supplies, and various other goodies by their parents and/ or grandparents. It is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little bit sweeter.
