A Message From

Kate Webber Punderson '89 Head of School Dear CVA Community, This fall, CVA students and I shared a common experience: the nervousness and anxiety that accompanies the first day of school. It marked the beginning of a new grade for the students and the beginning of a new role for me, but our concerns were the same. Am I prepared? Am I smart enough? Am I strong enough? Our fears soon subsided. Once we stepped inside the lobby we were supported by the energy and vitality that flows throughout the CVA community. The fears we faced on registration day boil down to this: do we have what it takes to succeed at CVA? The answer is yes, absolutely. Success at CVA is not defined by talent, it is defined by heart. What connects us all is not our ability to ski or snowboard, but the allure of the mountains and our shared commitment and dedication. My message to the students is this: you must do three things in order to succeed and take advantage of the opportunities you have here at CVA. Be good, work hard and have fun. If you can do these three things, you have what it takes. Three months later, those first day jitters are a distant memory and our students are busy committing themselves to their academics and athletics. We have had a wonderful fall packed full of exciting classes, tests and quizzes, soccer games, mountain bike races, physical testing, orientation trips, spirit day, birthday dinner, word of the day, and college essays. As the winter begins, this community will continue to support each other as we try our hardest to be kind to one another, engage in the classroom, and challenge ourselves on the mountain. Be Good, Work Hard and Have Fun,

Head of School

Building On Tradition, Forging Our Future

New Campus Campaign

Phase II

On October 7th, CVA friends and families gathered at the Sugarloaf Golf Club for an exciting event to kick off Phase II of the New Campus Campaign. A decade after the launch of Phase I, Head of School, Kate Punderson remarked to the audience, “we are here to finish what we started.” Totaling $7,000,000, Phase II will fund the construction of a state-of-the-art academic center; large dining, athletic, and administrative center; as well as an offseason jumping facility for the freestyle and snowboard programs. Once complete, CVA will have a cohesive, purpose built campus featuring some of the finest academic, athletic, and community facilities in the world. To support CVA’s long-term financial strength, $700,000 will be contributed towards the general endowment and endowed scholarships. “Because our need is so great, we aren’t going to wait” said Punderson, “in an effort to meet our most pressing needs as quickly as possible, we plan to

break ground on the academic center this spring.” The other facilities will be built as quickly as the fundraising will allow. Though Phase II has only recently become public, work has been underway for sometime. Already, $1,250,000 has been raised and the school’s Building Committee has been hard at work with architects and contractors to design the new facilities. James Pelletier ’03, the New Campus Campaign Director, praised the school’s commitment and acknowledged the challenge ahead, “this is a huge undertaking, but it’s vital to our student-athletes, our future, and our community. I know we’ll be successful.” For more information about Phase II of the New Campus Campaign, giving options, and naming opportunities please contact James Pelletier at 207-237-4498 or jpelletier@gocva.com.

2011 Commencement On Saturday, June 4th, the 16 members of the Class of 2011 gathered with faculty, staff, family, and friends for their commencement in the Richard Bell Chapel. Commencement speaker, Chip Muller ’88 reflected about his time at CVA, commenting on the camaraderie, rigor, and structure of the Big Dog lifestyle. He told the graduates they are privileged to have had the CVA experience because they learned about competition, motivation and they now understand what it means to pursue dreams, set goals and understand what it takes to get there.

The 27th annual CVA Sugarloaf Golf Classic raised over $53,000 for the Martha B. Webber Scholarship Fund. Each summer, CVA families, friends, and alumni come together for a weekend of great golf and entertainment along with live and silent auctions. The Martha B. Webber Scholarship Fund was established in memory of one of CVA’s earliest and most committed supporters who played a crucial role in the establishment of the Academy. Mrs. Webber felt strongly that deserving Maine students should have the opportunity to attend CVA regardless of economic status. Nineteen teams took part in the two day tournament, enjoying great weather and the challenging Sugarloaf course. The Golf Classic weekend also gave the CVA community a chance to celebrate the departure of John and Patty Ritzo following 25 years of dedicated leadership. Many alumni had the opportunity to share memories and thank the Ritzos for helping to shape the CVA experience for so many Big Dogs. It was a wonderful night, and a great way for the community to show its gratitude to John and Patty.

CVA Teacher Spotlight Mary Poulin

Mary Poulin came to CVA to teach English as a midyear replacement not really knowing what to expect. Ten years later she is one of the Academy’s most respected instructors, showing a commitment to enhancing her own writing and teaching skills while sharing that passion with her students. Like CVA’s student-athletes, Mary has become adept at balancing a demanding schedule— publishing her own work, adding to her professional certifications, and taking on new teaching assignments. Last December, while teaching Junior and Senior English at CVA, Mary completed an Advanced Certification from Antioch University in the instruction of Creative Writing. The online curriculum was supplemented by two trips to the Los Angeles campus and a final project on poetry and literary theory. Also, as part of her continued development she has taken on the additional challenge of teaching American Literature and Oral Communication at Unity College. CVA’s unique schedule allows Mary to spend two afternoons a week at the small, private college located an hour and a half southeast of Carrabassett Valley. Mary’s own poetry has been published in twelve journals nationally. She describes her style as narrative and lyrical. “It’s often nature based,” she says, “and it tends to focus on the uniqueness of our ordinary lives.” Mary, who lives in Carrabassett Valley with husband Denis, didn’t study English as an undergrad at UNH,

instead she majored in Environmental Conservation. It wasn’t until twenty years later that she pursued her passion for writing, earning a Masters Degree in Creative Writing from Vermont College. Mary’s students appreciate the supportive and respectful environment she has created in her discussion-based classes. “Everyone gets a chance to share,” says Henry Townsend ’12, “she is comfortable with us and makes us feel comfortable as well. She respects us and really cares about the students.” “I love teaching English because of the endless variety of material,” she says, “I can go back to the same books over and over again but there will always be new books or poems to read. It keeps it interesting for the students and me. Ultimately, I want my students to take away from my classes an appreciation for literature and poetry and the writing skills necessary to succeed in college.” Mary has two sons, Henry and John, who both graduated from CVA.

Mary’s favorite books to teach: A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, Norman Maclean All The Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy The River Why, David James Duncan Sometimes A Great Notion, Ken Kesey Peace Like A River, Leif Enger Empire Falls, Richard Russo

Big Dog Tales Class of 1983 Julie (D’Amico) Kurd says, “I loved being one of the first graduates of CVA back when Bruce Colon first moved up and began the 5 month boarding program. There were less than a dozen of us in one of the Webber’s condos and Kathi (Acord) Gray was our dorm mom. We were the only 2 girls, so we lived on the ground floor. The boys lived on the top two floors and we all hung out on the first floor. I can still feel the cold, quiet air hitting my face on those 6am runs. I traded in the freestyle skis, but I still ski about 40 days a year. I ski race in Wachusett Mountain’s Night Race League. It’s a blast and a real mix of exracers just off the college circuit and us wannabes. I love it. My children are J4 and J5 racers and we’re racing out of Loon this season. Loon tickets are good at Sugarloaf, so I’m hoping to come up one weekend with the kids and show them the mountain.” Class of 1985 Sean Brushett and wife Amber welcomed their second child in March. Gordy Martin sent the following note: “My wife Betsy and I are living in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin and doing great. I am a fly fishing guide and fish for salmon and trout throughout Wisconsin. My wife Betsy is living the life of a cheesehead and taking a “breather” after working 25 straight years in Chicago. I still have my business with the Chicago Public Schools selling audio/visual equipment and casegoods, but my fly fishing business is my focal point now. People say do what you love, and love what you do, so I am doing it! I went on a trip to Steamboat last year after not getting on a pair of skis in over a decade! But I was amazed at the technology...you have to remember in '85 we were skiing slalom on 203’s! These new technology skis can make a monkey look like Franz Klammer! I plan to bring Betsy back to where it all started for me. My time at CVA was undoubtedly some of the best years of my life. Hello to all Big Dogs that remember me!” Class of 1986 Mike Savage writes, “Hello fellow Big Dogs. Touching base with you from Stubai, Austria. Been here since

4

September 30th. Team Savage is training with multiple World Cup Teams here, and the snow is “sweet.” I’m living in New Hampshire, in the Lakes Region, have been in the East for 3 years after 12 years in Reno/Lake Tahoe where I held an Alpine Director position at Mt. Rose and an Athletic Director at private school. Been married to Elizabeth Savage since August 1999. Liz is a PE Teacher/Coach of multiple sports at Inter-Lakes, Meredith, NH. We have a son, Parker Robert Savage. I have been coaching women for 21 years now and have had my own team, “Team Savage Ski Racing” for the last 8 years, and was the Head Coach for the Womens Danish ski team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Class of 1987 Terry Everett Brown and wife Monique, welcomed Luke Russell Brown, born February 9, 2011, joining older brother George. Gerard Eckert says, “I live in Boulder, CO. Eric Colon '85 and I coach for Eldora Mountain Ski Club. Eric runs the Junior Race Program, so he is my parttime boss. Go Big Dogs!” Greg Tobias checked in from Belgrade, Serbia with lots of news: “First, I got engaged to a fantastic woman from Mexico in June, Sandra, on an amazing road trip with the kids through California and National Parks in a motor home. We are expecting a boy in the end of March. We are very excited about our wedding and soon-to-be expanded family. My kids Isabela (11) and Matei (9) are great and trilingual and active in all sorts of activities. The economic crisis has been a bit difficult on our company, so I have entered a new joint venture with a local oligarch’s real estate platform that did a deal with Merrill Lynch before the crisis. Now we are running their new development platform with a significant pipeline of projects, so hopefully this will be realized in the reasonably near future.” Raphael Haddock is living in Brooklyn, NY with his wife, Beth, daughter, Parker (11), and son, Clay (9). He recently made a career change and is now the COO of Idle Media, a small digital media company. Class of 1988

Chip Muller gave the commencement address at the 2011 CVA graduation. Class of 1992 Nora Stowell is currently living in Park City, UT and working for Suunto (an outdoor watch company based in Finland) under AMER Sports. She says, “The job requires a lot of travel and just this year I have been in New York twice, London, Munich, Berlin, Chamonix, Bali (ok, not work), Seattle, Chicago, Helsinki twice, Weld, Maine (home with family for the 4th), Norfolk, Jackson Mississippi, San Diego, Los Angeles, Dallas, Memphis, Portland (Oregon), Cabo (definitely not work) and soon to be Asia. Whew! This obviously keeps me busy throughout the year but still find time to get out on my mountain bike and road bike as well as groomer days at Deer Valley and powder days at Alta. My best to all and please look me up if you are ever in UT. I’m usually good for a glass of Sauv Blanc at Steins after skiing.” Class of 1993

Rebekah Abrams lives in Park City, UT and works in the ski industry as a rep, with her husband Jason (we got married May 1, 2010), for Spy Optic, BERN helmets and POW gloves. “I am also on The Canyons photo team which means you’ve probably seen me in their marketing materials somewhere along the way. Last winter I started a personal

chef business and it’s going great! I come into your home and cook you a fabulous meal while you sit by the fire sipping your favorite drink and snacking on yummy, handcrafted appetizers culminating in a fabulous sit down dinner of 3-5 courses. I’m still doing RJ designs jewelry as you may have seen at the last CVA silent auction. No kids, just a crazy bird dog named Shorty, who keeps us pretty busy.” Kyle Hockmeyer and his wife Stephanie welcomed their son, Samuel Wayne Hockmeyer this summer. William More came for a visit and tour of the new campus in September for the first time since graduating. He designs custom furniture in Oregon. Class of 1994 Tonie Taft is on active duty serving in the Navy Nurse Corps. She currently works in the ER at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Class of 1995 Mike Savoie is working as a sales engineer with Rocky Mountain Baldor, working mostly with motion control and induction motors. He writes, “I also have the luxury of having Doppelmeier and Leitner-Poma as some of my clients, where I am able to work with them on specifying drives for their ski lifts. This means that to keep up with the competition I have to ride the lifts and make sure we are not losing ground. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it. I’m also coaching the Evergreen High School Nordic Team. It’s a small group of about 20 kids and we’re looking to get a top-5 finish at the state championship this year. Finally, I recently celebrated my 3rd anniversary with my wife, Shiloh.” Class of 1996 Caleb Maccready lives in San Francisco and Harbor Springs, MI, and is the CEO of his family’s retail business www.huzza.net.

Chari is currently completing a 2 year post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Emily Cook is still training in Park City and will compete again on the World Cup tour this coming season. She writes, “I am finishing up my degree at the University of Utah this winter as well and will graduate by spring with a BA in Mass Communication. I am also writing for Ski Racing Magazine again this winter. This fall I got to catch up with Chari Hirshson in NYC while in town for the Women’s Sports Foundation’s annual salute to women in sport. I was very excited to spend time with Chari, her husband Scott and her two beautiful daughters Maia and Julia. Class of 1998 Emily Stifler found us on Facebook and wrote, “Danielle Chamberlain ‘05 and I have been working at Outlaw Partners together in Big Sky for the past eight months and just now realized we both went to CVA. Coleman. She writes, “He is doing very well, so sweet and smiley. Chad and I are loving being parents. To add to our excitement, this summer we bought a home in Falmouth. It is a “fixer upper” on seven acres, and we are underway on some big projects there. I just took a new job at Martin’s Point in Portland, ME. I will be a Health Promotion Guide for employees under the worksite wellness program. I am sad to be leaving my position at CVA, as it is a part of who I am and has provided me with a fantastic experience. With that said, I am very pleased to be taking on a new adventure and to be entering a field that I am passionate about. I am half way through my last year of my masters program. I go to school through UMass Online. I will graduate with a Masters in Public Health Nutrition hopefully next fall.” Kristin Surowiec Tippet and her husband Riley had a baby boy, Anderson, on June 13, 2011. Erin Kay married former freestyle coach Conor Shankman at Saddleback Mountain this summer with several Big Dogs in attendance. Nick Miller checks in from California: “Still living in LA, moved from Venice Beach to Redondo Beach, liking it much better here. Still working for the city of LA as a firefighter, just recently got reassigned to a different station. I’ve been in contact with Ben Crowell '98 who is trying to plan a surfing trip to Costa Rica, but not sure if I can make it yet. I’m still married to my lovely Australian wife, Ashlee, will be 4 years in January. Still no kids...last winter we spent a lot of time up at Mammoth which had their biggest snowfall on record, it was awesome! Planning on riding a lot again this winter. We’ve been doing a fair bit of hiking and rock climbing out at Joshua Tree which is always fun! Went to Panama this summer for my b-day and got my scuba diving license which was pretty cool. I’ll hopefully make it back East this winter sometime after Xmas, would be cool to catch up with some old friends...” Class of 2000 Jake Colognesi graduated from Tuck Business School and is working in Boston at a private equity firm called Volition Capital. The program I’m working on now will air Nov. 22 on PBS.”

Class of 2003 Krista (Hoisington) Clarke had a baby girl, Rowan, with husband PJ this summer. Johnny Ritzo married Sarah Buck on August 6, in Biddeford Pool, ME with many Big Dogs in attendance. Jeremy Weir writes, “Many of my ski friends from college were from Aspen/ Snowmass, so I moved to the valley and coached while working at a restaurant. This covered the bills, but didn’t look so good on a resume. I caught wind of a teller position opening up at Wells Fargo, and it was the only full time job with benefits in the valley. It was hard work, but it paid off. After barely a year as a teller, I was promoted to a personal banking position within WF in the Aspen branch. Though my focus is consumer accounts, I have been learning more and more about the business banking side as well. Today, I primarily work as a banker, but I also help Aspen Valley Ski Club with their freestyle program. It’s tough working 6-7 days a week all winter, but I love working with the kids, and seeing them better themselves each and every day. Another alum who helps run the AVSC program is Jason Cook '02. He is still snowboarding, and is a big influence.” Class of 2002 Carter Witherspoon recently left BNY Mellon to join a Private Mortgage Banking Team at Wells Fargo’s Private Bank in Boston. James Pelletier writes, “I left my job, left the big city, and am back at CVA! I started as the New Campus Campaign Director in mid-August and am loving it so far. It’s great to be back in Maine. Working at school has given me a whole new appreciation for CVA’s students and faculty - all alumni should be proud to know CVA hasn’t changed and is still an awesome place. The New Campus Campaign is a big endeavor but I know firsthand how important new facilities are to the school so I’m thrilled to be able to help. In August, Carter Witherspoon '02 and I were the “cobest-men” in Johnny Ritzo’s ’01 wedding - it was a true Big Dog celebration.” Class of 2004 Ben Burns has been working with

Matt Philippi completed a second project this summer for his non-profit organization The Full Circle Project. He and other skiers provided agricultural support to an isolated community in the Andes of Peru. “We were working in Maras, near Cusco. Our project was to plant hundreds of fruit trees to make an orchard. After our work, we went and skied for a couple of weeks in Argentina. We made lots of strong connections in the southern mountain town of Esquel and enjoyed skiing terrain full of jagged rocky spires and long couloirs. We are working on the documentary of the trip and hoping to release it in November. All the media will be available on our website, www.TheFullCircleProject. com. I am also very excited to say that I have finally moved away from halfpipe competitions. I am now off to Jackson Hole, WY and planning on shooting with TGR this upcoming season. I will be spending most of my time in the backcountry with snowmobiles, chasing pow, skiing lines, and building jumps. More important, however, is my continued efforts on The FullCircle Project.” Jake Hardy writes, “I am currently living in Park City, UT working as the Vice President of Operations for Ski Butlers, a ski rental delivery company founded by fellow Big Dog, Bryn Carey '01. Although winter is a very busy time with work, I still try and make a point to ski at least 3 days per week. In my free time I enjoy taking advantage of being outdoors in the mountains and watching the Patriots with Ben Burns '04 and Dave Digravio '05.” Sean D’Amboise checked in: “I finished my bachelor degrees in 2008 from the University of Utah double majoring in Geography and Environmental Studies with a minor in Experiential Education. I continue to live in Salt Lake City, UT during the winter season and in Green River, UT during the summer season. I currently work during the winter for REI selling skis, snowboards, bikes, paddling gear, and other outdoor gear. Also, I work in the repair shop at Brighton Ski Resort tuning skis and snowboards. I continue learning other aspects of snowboarding, such as avalanche awareness, terrain traps and safe travel in the backcountry. During the summer months I work for the best rafting company in the west called Holiday River Expeditions where

I have recently been leading multi-day rafting and mountain biking trips on the Colorado Plateau. I also will fly to Maine for two weeks in the summer to teach at CVA’s Tramp and Skate camp which will be my 10th year with the camp.” Class of 2005 Dylan Perry just started his first year of medical school at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. “I’m living in the 2nd largest city in New England, the sprawling metropolis known as Worcester, Massachusetts,” he writes, “Cutting up cadavers, learning about tissues, borrowing money from Uncle Sam, eating Ramen— you know, the graduate school game. Not skiing much but considering that I now live only about 20 minutes from one of the world’s finest ski mountains, Wachusett, I’m sure I’ll be going a bit more. Count me in for at least one visit up to the Loaf this winter.”

He works for the Forest Service on the Carson Hotshots out of Taos, NM in the summers. He returns to Vail for the winter to ski and ride. Jim Whitledge recently returned from Japan after living and working there for two years and is now taking the remainder of his prerequisite classes for medical school and trying to find a part time medical job in the Boston area. He will be “shredding the gnar at the Loaf this year for sure.”

Barrett Cox graduated from the University of New Hampshire this past May with a degree in Business Administration and a focus on entrepreneurial venture creation. “Just after graduation in May, I packed up and moved to Park City, UT where I am currently living and working. I am currently employed by Park City Laser Engravers as the general manager and head of sales. I also run a small t-shirt business on the side called Nanners Apparel. While I haven’t skied out here yet, I can’t wait for the winter to start.”

Class of 2006

Class of 2009

Christian Talmadge is living in Boston working for architecture firm William and Rawn Associates after graduating from Dartmouth in 2010. Bill Karn is working as a software engineer for Microsoft. He writes, “Seattle is awesome — good rock climbing and skiing around here too. But the bigger news is that I got married this summer in August! Sounds like all is well over there. CVA is a great experience that goes by way too fast.”

Jaime Lynn Bisson married Tyler Plourde on August 20, 2011 at her parent’s (former CVA employees, Rick and Laurie Bisson) home in Day’s Ferry, Woolwich. Derek Pike moved to Los Angeles to continue with his directing career. “I recently signed with a production company in the UK and also have new representation here in the US. This past summer I had my first #1 music video on MTV. I’ve been working hard to be somebody so CVA will one day ask me to give a commencement speech!”

Sam Pelletier continues to enjoy coaching alpine men at CVA and helping out with development and marketing.

Class of 2007

Alex Buck sent the following note: “Here’s the update on the Buck family in Bozeman: Angus is almost three; we got our passes together for the year at Bridger Bowl. Allie is keeping up with her painting and drawing while molding our young breed. Sewing everyday to keep up with KnappSack orders, if

in cell death and cognitive dysfunction. I’m hoping to make it up to the mountain over the holidays. Plus, I’m craving a Bag Burger with extra Bag sauce and cheeseburger soup!”

Ben Morse is in the midst of his second year at Dartmouth and can’t wait for the racing season to begin. “As a matter of fact,” he says, “I am writing this update with my ski boots on, true story. The NorAm tour will once again be my focus this season and I am also really excited to race the collegiate carnival circuit (shout out to Craig Marshall ’10, Colby freshman). Most of all, the constant buzz surrounding the new lift at Sugarloaf has me pumped to rip some runs during Christmas break.” Hope Wilson is currently a Junior at Smith College studying neuroscience. She is planning on being a recreational skier this winter after two knee surgeries. Kyle Tullos and wife Kelsey had a baby girl named Kaia on October 10, 2011. Class of 2011 Heather Doran is a Freshman at Concordia University studying Athletic Therapy and doing dryland with the ski team and will be racing the Quebec circuit this winter for Concordia. Gray reports, “After graduating from Colby College, I moved to the Boston area and began working at Massachusetts General Hospital as a research technician in the Pediatric Research department. I’m finding specific treatments to improve outcome after traumatic brain injury by using mouse models of concussion and contusion to study mechanisms involved

Derek Pike '06 CVA student-athletes go on to do amazing things. From Olympians, to doctors and lawyers, Big Dogs have found success in virtually every field. But only one CVA alum can be credited with having a #1 music video on MTV. That would be Derek Pike, class of 2006. Derek, a snowboarder from Stony Point, New York, has established quite a reputation as an in-demand director for some of the most popular artists in the country, having directed over fifty music videos since graduating from NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts. “I always credit CVA as the place where I first got interested in Film,” says Derek. “In Steve Sitz’s Digital Media class I learned some of the most important fundamentals in filmmaking.” At NYU, however, Derek found that the lengthy path towards directing required several years as a production assistant and a slow climb up the corporate ladder, with no guarantee of success. “I didn’t want to wait to do what I loved and found that music videos could be the solution,” he says. Derek saw the quick pace and low cost of music video directing as a chance to build his resume and jumpstart his career while still in school.

After getting in touch with every artist he could contact and shooting some “guerrilla-style videos in some very sketchy places,” Derek eventually connected with an artist he had wanted to collaborate with. The rapper “Saigon” saw one of his videos and approached him, resulting in a fruitful relationship that produced numerous videos for the pair, and got the attention of a production company in New York. Now, armed with connections at the big record labels, Derek had the chance to direct higher budget videos for bigger stars. In July 2011, only two years after graduating college, Derek’s video for DJ Drama’s “Oh My” became the #1 video on MTV. Derek, now splitting his time between New York and Los Angeles, has a number of music videos in the works, but he says, “my goal is to really start making a transition into directing commercials, TV shows, and movies.”

CVA Entrepreneurs CVA alumni have been charting their own path and finding success on their own terms since the beginning. There’s something about Big Dogs’ passion, work ethic, and ability to self-motivate that produces great entrepreneurs, artists, and craftsmen. That’s why so many of our graduates go on to build their own companies, work independently, or create their own career. Here are three more Big Dogs who, like Derek, pursued a passion for creativity and independence.

Ryan McDermott

’05 and his brother Andy learned how to build surfboards because they didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a new board. Six years and dozens of handmade custom boards later, McDermott Shapes has become a full time job for the brothers. Following apprenticeships in Southern California with master board builders, the boys recently returned home to Freeport, Maine to an expanded workshop and a new website. Last year they were able to merge their passion for surfboard design with skiing when they built the “surf-skis” used by Salomon’s pro athletes in a high profile project that pushed the possibilities of wave sports.

Alex Buck, a classmate of Ryan’s from ’05 is another Big Dog

making high-quality, custom products. Knapp Sacks by Buck Products are hand-made, custom backpacks made by Alex in Bozeman, Montana. Alex began making the packs while studying at Montana State University, launching a website to handle orders. The simple, functional, and fully customizable packs have developed a cult following, appearing on a number of style and outdoor blogs. Alex recently moved into a new studio in Bozeman and has started to distribute Knapp Sacks to retail stores throughout the country.

Brett Hellstedt graduated from CVA in 1993 following his

older brother and sister. After graduating from the University of Colorado, he and his brother founded their own timberframe construction company in Yarmouth, Maine. Maine Post and Beam specializes in traditional timberframing for residential and commercial purposes. With an attention to detail and respect for traditional techniques, Brett’s company has gained a stellar reputation for their design and execution of beautiful homes, barns, and outbuildings. Like CVA students balancing their athletics and academics, Brett continues to pursue high-level athletics while running his business and having a family. Last October, Brett qualified for and competed in the Iron Man World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, finishing in the top 25% of all competitors.
